Building a Coffee Table with Myself as the Designer
As I sat at my wife's nightstand, staring at the first draft of the coffee table I had attempted to build, I couldn't help but think that it was definitely not going to work. The design was off, and the materials were too much for its own good. It looked like a leaning tower of wood, which is exactly what it felt like - unstable and unwieldy. I decided then and there that I needed to start over from scratch.
I began by taking out some of the excess wood, trying to get the dimensions back under control. The original design had been six inches by eight and a half inches, but after making some adjustments, it ended up being much larger - more like four inches by ten. It was clear that I needed to scale things down significantly if I wanted this coffee table to be anything approaching functional.
As I worked on the project, I realized that I had underestimated the importance of a good flex shaft. The one I was using at the time wasn't doing much for me, and I found myself having to hold onto it for dear life as I tried to drill into various pieces of wood. That's when I stumbled upon an Amazon product that changed everything - a flexible shaft that attaches directly to your drill. It was like a revelation. With this new tool, I was able to cut through even the toughest materials with ease.
I decided to use my flex shaft to cut out some curves in the design, trying to make it look a little more weathered and worn than usual. This would add some visual interest to the piece, and give it a bit of character that would set it apart from other coffee tables on the market. As I worked, I couldn't help but think about how far this project had come - from its humble beginnings as a giant, unwieldy monstrosity to a sleek, functional piece of furniture that would soon be adorning my wife's living room.
Of course, there were some bumps along the way. Literally. As I was trying to get the joint between two pieces of wood to fit together properly, I ended up snapping one of them in half. This happened not once, not twice, but four times before I finally managed to get a piece that worked. It was clear that I needed to be more careful when it came to fitting things together - too loose and the whole thing would come crashing down, while too tight and it would be wobbly.
In retrospect, I can see that I should have been more careful with my measurements from the start. The piece is still a bit top-heavy, which means that it's slightly unstable on its own. To fix this, I decided to hollow out a channel underneath the phone mount for the cord. This was a misguided attempt at engineering - I soon realized that if I plugged the phone in and then put it in the base, the cord would actually force down into the tabletop and cause the whole thing to rock off.
So, what did I learn from this experience? That sometimes, things just don't work out as planned. But with a little bit of creativity and perseverance, even the most disastrous projects can be salvaged and turned into something beautiful. And that's exactly what I did - took my failed coffee table design and ran with it.
Inspiration for Other Projects
As I worked on this project, I couldn't help but think about all the other ideas that were floating around in my head. There are a few t-shirt ideas that I've been kicking around for a while now, and I'm thinking of running some contests to see which ones people like best.
One idea is an Infiniti Bob design - for those who don't know what I'm talking about, it's just a funny joke about my infatuation with the brand. Another idea is a piece that incorporates some sort of weird humor or pop culture reference. These are just a few ideas - I have plenty more where these came from.

Conclusion
As I sit here now, finishing up the final touches on my coffee table project, I have to say that it's been a wild ride. It started out as a failure, but through perseverance and creativity, we've managed to turn it into something truly special. And that's exactly what this build is all about - experimentation, risk-taking, and pushing yourself to see where things can go.
If you're looking for inspiration to get out in the shop and start building something of your own, I say give it a shot. Don't worry too much about making mistakes - they're an inevitable part of the process, and often lead to unexpected breakthroughs. And if all else fails, just remember that sometimes things don't work out as planned, but with a little bit of creativity and determination, even the most disastrous projects can be salvaged and turned into something beautiful.
That's the story of how I built this coffee table - with myself as the designer, and plenty of trial and error along the way. I hope you've enjoyed following along, and I look forward to seeing what other adventures come next!
