Apple's Focus on Performance with iOS 12
Craig Federighi mentioned Apple's focus on performance with the new OS update, making big speed improvement claims such as some apps launching twice as fast and CPU ramped up speed increasing across not just older devices but also newer ones as well. This is a significant departure from typical practice where Apple drops the oldest generation devices with each new iOS release.
However, this year is different. If your device supports iOS 11, it means you'll be able to run iOS 12, which goes all the way back to the iPhone 5s and iPad Mini 2. To test how much of an improvement we can get with older devices, we pitted Apple's flagship running iOS 11 against one running the first developer beta of iOS 12.
We use the iPhone 6 along with the oldest tablet to support iOS 12, which is the iPad Mini 2. The Mini 2 does use the same A7 processor as the iPhone 5s, so this could be an indication of performance improvements. Launching the iPad Mini 2 with iOS 12 launches about 2 seconds quicker than launching it with iOS 11.
iOS 12 brings this tablet some new life, making it much smoother and more responsive compared to iOS 11, which is much glitchy, err, and has a little bit of stuttering. When opening the camera app, the speeds are right about the same for both operating systems. However, launching Geekbench 4 took about the same amount of time with both iOS 11 and iOS 12, but the CPU test results were slightly ahead in the multi-core score with iOS 12.
The graphics core was also very close at a very low 591 with iOS 12. The first game we tested was Angry Birds 2, which actually launched 12 seconds faster with iOS 12 than it did with iOS 11. The next game, Pokemon Go, took about the same amount of time to launch with both operating systems, but the responsiveness with iOS 12 is noticeable as soon as you hit the home button.
When opening up the news app, we see that the app starts to launch right away with iOS 12, which could be due to the increased CPU ramped up speed. However, oddly enough, the app actually finishes opening first with iO S 11. Moving on to our own Apple Insider app, iOS 12 finishes the task about a second quicker than it did with iOS 11.
The same thing goes for Amazon Prime Video, which opens quicker and is about one second faster than it was with iOS 11. Similarly, Google Drive also starts opening quicker with iOS 12, as does the YouTube app, which is about two seconds quicker to launch. However, interestingly, the TV app takes five seconds longer to launch with iOS 11.
To compare the RAM management, we relaunched each app hoping that iOS 12 would keep more apps open in the background, but both operating systems had to reload Pokemon Go. Moving on to the iPhone 6, which launches about six seconds quicker with iOS 11.4 than it does with iOS 12. As for responsiveness, iOS 12 is slightly smoother than it was with iOS 11, but not as noticeable a difference as there was with the iPad Mini 2.
Tapping Geekbench 4, it started loading slightly faster with iOS 11 and our CPU and GPU scores were almost the same with both operating systems. However, Angry Birds launched about eleven seconds faster with iOS 12 than it did with iOS 11. When tapping Pokemon Go, the app starts loading almost instantly with iOS 12.
However, in the end, iO S 11 finished first. Asphalt 8 launched about four seconds faster under iOS 11 than it did with iOS 12. News was also about three seconds faster under iOS 11. Books were a little bit faster under iOS 11.4. Apple Insider was slightly faster but not a big difference. Finally, Prime Video was about one second ahead of Google Drive but not a big difference.
Overall, the results were a bit mixed with our iPhone 6, but very impressive with our iPad Mini 2. Keep in mind that this is the first beta release and performance typically improves leading up to the official release. This iOS 12 beta breathed new life into our iPad, which was almost unbearable to use under iOS 11 if you're someone with the older iOS device. We applaud Apple for its focus on performance and not dropping compatibility on older devices.
