Doppler Labs' new Here One true wireless earbuds deliver great sound, and much more
Last Year at CES: A Revolutionary Active Listening System
Last year at CES, we were blown away by the Hero Active listening system, a wearable that allowed us to control the sound around us in almost a magical way. We were also impressed by its ability to eliminate noise in busy hallways like the Pepcom Digital Experience Showroom floor where we are right now. However, there was one thing that the earbuds didn't do - play music well.
Introducing Here One: The Ultimate Wearable Headphones
But this year, Hero has brought back their system and added music playback capabilities to make them one of the most formidable wearable headphones in space. We had the chance to try out the new product, and we were thoroughly impressed by its features and performance. One of our favorite things about the Here One system is its very intuitive app, which allows us to quickly raise and lower the volume around us. Last year, they had a dial, but this time, it's been simplified even further - just raise your finger to get +6 or all the way down to -22 dB. But that's really just the start.
The Magical Part: Sound Control
This is where things get truly magical. The sound really does just about disappear in busy spaces, allowing us to focus on our surroundings without distractions. But that's not all - we can also do a whole lot more with this product. We have access to filters and different settings, including an airplane mode that allows the microphones to pick up sound behind us rather than in front of us. There's even an "Ease Drop" mode that picks up the sound behind us, reducing noise pollution. These filtration systems allow us to affect the sound around us with ease.
Going into Studio Mode: EQ and Live Sound Control
One of the standout features of the Here One is its studio mode, which allows us to control the EQ (equalization) very simply. We can basically dial in anything we want and adjust the live sound to our liking. This is great for shows or events where the audio might be too loud or too bassy - with this system, we can fine-tune the room's acoustics to create an optimal listening experience.
Design and Battery Life
The design of the Here One hasn't changed much from its predecessor, which is to say that it still looks sleek and stylish. The battery life is also similar to other headphones in the space - we get about 2 and a half hours per charge, with two and a half more charges from the case itself.
Sound Performance: A Great Place to Test
The big question mark was always going to be sound performance - could these headphones deliver on music playback? We're pleased to say that they did. The sound signature is nice and even throughout the frequency range, with enough bass and a smooth mid-range. This is especially evident in noisy spaces like the Pepcom Digital Experience Showroom floor, where it's great to be able to tune out distractions.
The Late Bloomer: A Product That Was Worth Waiting For
Hero One was released somewhat late to market - we expected them to come out last year, but instead, they made sure that their product was just right. This attention to detail is a testament to the company's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. And while $300 might seem steep for some, trust us when we say that you do get what you pay for. The Here One is an exceptional wearable headphone that delivers on all fronts.
The Verdict
In conclusion, Hero One has exceeded our expectations in every way. Its intuitive app, sound control capabilities, and studio mode make it a standout product in the wearable headphone market. While there are some minor drawbacks to its design and battery life, these are easily outweighed by the many benefits that this headset offers. If you're looking for a truly exceptional listening experience, we highly recommend the Hero One.
