The Art of Repurposing and Restyling: A Bathroom Makeover Journey
I had initially planned to install shelves in my bathroom, but after further consideration, I realized that it might affect the ability to insulate the space as well as we wanted. This led me to explore alternative options, including various types of shelves that could be screwed into the tile, which I wasn't too fond of due to concerns about potential leaks. I also considered suction cup or sticky type shelves, but worried about their long-term ability to hold items securely.
As a compromise, I decided to try an unconventional approach: using teak stools that I already owned. I had purchased these stools during my backyard makeover and had stored them away for years, not utilizing them to their full potential. The stools were in decent condition, but they needed some TLC. To restore them, I used a teak oil, which protects, restores, and leaves a natural finish. By repurposing and resealing these stools, I created a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution for holding shower items.
The plan was to place the restored teak stool in the shower as a shelf, and see how it would work out. After applying the teak oil and allowing the stools to dry, I was pleased with the results. The stools looked like new again, and I was excited to put them to use in my bathroom. As I placed the stool in the shower, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that I had repurposed an old item and given it a new life.
The final touches are now being added to complete the bathroom makeover. The last install involves a light-up mirror for one of the vanities. While I didn't capture the installation process on camera, I'm eager to show you the finished result. This addition will bring a sense of grandeur and luxury to the space, and I can hardly wait to see it in action.
As I reflect on this bathroom makeover journey, I'm reminded that sometimes the best solutions come from repurposing items we already own. It's not just about buying new; it's about being creative and resourceful with what we have. In the past, I've reused old pieces of art, furniture, and even decorative elements in various rooms of my house. Each time, I've been surprised by how well these items can be integrated into a new space.
The moment I realized that my entire house was in need of renovation, I felt overwhelmed. But as I embarked on this journey, I discovered the true power of repurposing and restyling. It's not just about making a space look beautiful; it's about creating a sense of continuity and flow throughout a home. Each room is connected, each piece is connected, and each story is connected.
The final moment of truth has arrived, and I'm thrilled to have shared this journey with all of you. If you've been following along, thank you for your support and encouragement. Your comments and suggestions were invaluable, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such a wonderful community. As we bid farewell to this bathroom makeover episode, I invite you to subscribe to my channel and continue the journey with me as we tackle the next renovation project: the 7s Farmhouse.
In conclusion, I'd like to take a moment to appreciate the little things that make this space truly special. The circle mirror that had been collecting dust for years, now hangs proudly above the toilet. The wooden stools that were once stored away, now provide a sturdy and stylish solution for holding shower items. And the teak oil that brought new life to these stools – it's a testament to the power of restoration and repurposing.
As I look around this newly renovated bathroom, I'm filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It's not just about the end result; it's about the journey itself. The process of discovery, experimentation, and growth that led us here. And as we move forward into the next chapter of our renovation journey, I invite you to join me once again, and see what the future holds for my home and my channel.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys welcome back to the channel okay I have been going through a very long and pretty exory makeover to my primary bathroom and we're finishing it up in this video I promise we're so close to being done and boy am I ready welcome back to the series where I challenge myself to use thrifted materials and a Love of All Things retro to DIY our family home from this Farmhouse to that at70s house there have been so many of you invested in this journey and I cannot thank you enough for supporting me through this whole thing all of your comments on the various episodes leading up to this moment have been so helpful and so instrumental to getting me to where we are today so let's take it back to the very beginning as a quick reminder for everything that has happened so far so almost 2 years ago I moved into my dream 70s Farmhouse and I have slowly been renovating It All Space by space there was one space though that I was very hesitant to get to and that was the primary bathroom because it was just bad the window was literally falling apart the shower had so much gooped up COA everywhere which made us think that there was leaks behind it we didn't even want to touch the space until last summer we finally said let's do it my husband and I got our suits on and we went to demolish this whole Space now our thought was let's take it back to the shell and then we can just pretty it back up again once we got to the Shell we realized well this the shell is pretty bad too it's covered in mold the wood is all rotted it's probably not worth saving so we went a step further and we demolished that too until basically we had an empty space in our garage which by the way the bathroom backs into the garage so my husband Austin and I got to it we watched a ton of tutorials on YouTube and learned everything we could about building a bathroom we put up studs again we insulated we drywalled we put in a brand new window to make this space feel bright and Airy then it was time for flooring we were doing heated flooring guys because this bathroom had to be warm once the heated flooring was in it was time to tile on top of that to which we picked potentially a questionable blue green marble slate tile and turns out I loved it but now where do we go from here with a half started bathroom with some blue elements that I wasn't planning on I don't know um okay I got happy dance here while you guys take a second to subscribe for the journey that has been going on cool you done that all right let's go so something that's always been on the design plan since the very beginning is a slatted wood ceiling and as you can see we haven't done that yet and I need to know exactly how far down that wood ceiling is going to go so that I can place the shower tiles right up against it so shower tile can't be done until ceiling is done so we're going to do sealing first first and then go back to tiling um this whole process has been one big journey in figuring out the order of operations of everything because certain things can't happen until other things happen first and that's been fun to navigate that hello somebody here if you are taking on a room makeover of your own we have a course that's going to guide you through the entire process including what order to do everything in how to design how to even come up with your design style and then how do you approach buying everything and putting it in the room it's all the knowledge we've accumulated over years of doing room makeovers for people and we've put it all in an easy to digest course that will take you through the Journey of a makeover of your own that's that and it's in the description below but um let's get on to the ceiling so this is what we're using it is Cedar tongue and groove meaning that it's got one Edge that sticks out and one Edge that has an indent so the pieces can kind of click together nicely when I first pitched this idea that I wanted to do a wood ceiling in the bathroom um there was a lot of questions about can you actually do wood in a bathroom like will it hold up to shower Steam and whatnot um and that's why I'm going with the choice to use cedar cedar is really rot resistant it's great for steamy environments and of like a cedar sauna they use cedar for that and it holds up so I'm feeling good about this choice of wood for this project and especially when you do the proper preparation work like putting in Vapor Barrier and of course a uh shower vent fan that will reduce the s in here so we were loving how the cedar ceiling looked so much that Austin had the idea to trim the weird in between space between the bathroom and the bedroom with the same Cedar this is kind of a tricky space anyway since it has some funky angles and was not really easily drywall B so I think this is a great solution freaking amazing this is the most exciting change that we've done so far in my opinion in and it's like the first real thing from the original mood board that has happened we just temporarily screwed in the rainfall shower head just to see it and like this is selling bathroom so much I I don't want to cry it's so so so good now we're finally ready to tile the shower which for that we have these just really big 2x two off-white really heavy did you mention that they're reallyy they're really heavy how many pounds do you think a lot I think that the finish of this is so nice it's like it's satin satin's the word it's not matte but it's not high gloss it's just going to be really nice in the shower I didn't want to do something too too loud because the floor is already well it's covered now but the floor is already a color and I think this will be just make this whole area feel nice and big and open and spotlike are you getting the Vision Austin oh was I supposed to be listening can I tell you something else too the reason I wanted to do really big tile is because the thing that gets the grossest in showers the fastest is the gro Gro becomes like off-colored and mud collects on it so I was like let's minimize the amount of gr lines in the shower so we're doing big Ts and we're going to do like a dirt grout so that like you can't see when it gets dirty cuz it is already dirt what's the color of shower slime yeah like that in Gro please on two of the tiles we'll have to make some cuts for the plumbing we don't have a ton of extra tiles so I'm going to be making a template on some cardboard first to make sure that it fits perfectly then tracing that onto the tile so it can be cut hi is looking so good and once it's fully dried we are going to add the final step which is the matching off white gr good morning okay you guys ready to see something very exciting we now officially have a shower with walls we had a contractor come out yesterday and together with Austin put all the walls up and it has a door that closes excuse me sir this is my shower W fit another person in here maybe more pass the shampoo thank you I'm really happy with the choice to the glass walls and everything is coming together now back to the things that we are doing um I think we're going to put the sink vanity up now y p so perfect that's cool brushing my teeth why do you put so much back into it cuz it's so low don't make this sink anymore so if we break it we're in trouble we're going to have to cast our own out of uh that's right out of concrete that's right it would actually be pretty sweet now does it feel too low it's a thick sink pretty cool nice stuff you want to see the faucet ah it worked wow that's really nice A little glow you know brilliant brilliant no I got it you may have noticed that I didn't put the drawers in this unit yet and that is because they're actually with relle she is making me custom handles for this as well as doing a whole upcycle buildout for the second sinkless vanity that's going over here that's what the tape is on the wall I'm just figuring out spacing of everything this is a a work in progress very much so so while she does that I'm going to do an Ikea Hack of my own on a much smaller scale perhaps but okay Windows behind me we've got the wood trim around it it's looking good still yet to be stained but a lot of my inspo that I was pinning for bathrooms didn't have any like overwhelmingly stand out window treatments like if at all so I want to do something easy simple and understated that's just going to look kind of nice in that window box there so I am going to be taking the ring blama from Ikea do you see it I got this one in the Asis section I think the ones they stock NOW are in like a green fabric this is white either way it's not exactly the shade and fabric that I would like it to be in so we're going to swap that out and I'll show you how this works over here this this is so genius in its Simplicity it's like a Roman shade but there's no strings or cords or mechanics it literally just opens and closes via magnets like this right I love stuff that is simple like that but as you can see it's too long and it's too wide and I'd like it to be a little more of an off white so the first step was to entirely disassemble the Ikea curtain because we're going to need all of the inside Parts it comes with these little hooks at the top which I won't be using but you can keep these if you want to hang it back up the same way as the original one for those plastic rods I'm marking down just shy of the width of my window you'll need to cut evenly from both sides since there are magnets in the middle that you'll want to keep centered then I'm just using a little hacksaw to cut them down this was honestly so easy to cut that I'm pretty sure you could just use an exacto knife blade to do this too for my fabric I'm going to use a curtain that I also picked up well at Ikea so I'm cutting out a rectangle the size of my window plus leaving some extra seam allowance and even leaving a little more on the top so that I can fold it over and make a tube for that first plastic rod which doesn't have any magnets in it I'm then doing a simple hem on both the sides and the bottom as well as folding over and making that tube for the top piece to put those magnet strips back in I decided to take apart this super lightweight material that was used to hold the strips in in the original Ikea shade I was worried that using my fabric to make these tubes might weigh it down too much and make the magnets not stick I lined those up to the back of my shade and sewed them in place make sure you don't sew up the ends yet though because we'll need to put the magnet strips back in once those were in I just did a simple hand Stitch to close up the ends I was getting ready to hang this but then I realized I should probably get this window stained first so let's take a quick break to do that okay going to let that window dry in the meantime let's install some other things starting with this very simple toilet paper holder now oh speaking of we have a toilet oh my God am I really but to have a talk with you on the toilet yeah let's do it so as you guys have seen Austin and I have done like almost all of this bathroom ourselves and not because any of us have done that before we've just learned so much along the way watching lot of video tutorials online but I do also want to be honest with you guys about where we got help one was at the very beginning of this whole project we brought in a contractor just to like consult and then the second thing is that we did have a plumber come in to hook everything up that was one of those things where if we were wrong about it it would be a huge mistake if we had a leak behind the wall oh and the one last thing is that that same contractor from the very beginning did come back to help Austin install the glass walls for the shower because that was another thing that was not worth the risk this shower was expensive and um if Austin and I had dropped the glass in an attempt to uh install it that would have been a $1,000 mistake and um that's all I'm going to continue to DIY by putting this in the wall now that I'm here I can actually see where it makes the most sense yeah that feels feels right okay ni okay and then you might have also noticed this electrical box here on the wall that's still open and thought that's an awfully weird place to put a light uh well light's not going there because what is going there is something that is literally big on my house bucket list since I found out these were a thing like I think before I even owned a home um and that is a heated towel bar I know for those of you that own this this is probably obvious but for anyone that hasn't heard about this picture when your towels come fresh out of the dryer and you just want to wrap yourself in them because it's so good you can get that experience through a heated towel bar or at least that's what I'm hoping they also make plug-in versions of these so for anyone thinking that you would have had to think about doing that before your bathroom don't worry there's a solution for you too I don't know why I'm the biggest like advocate for this now I want everyone to have one just told Austin to go flip the breaker back on cuz I hooked this up and yes I did turn off the breaker before I did this why cuz I don't want to die did you do it yeah oh a red light turned on Tada wow looks amazing it's like you climb on it I could I could climb on it probably until you burn your hands I wonder how hot it's actually going to get you fall against it like until you trip no there's no way it's that hot oh yeah that's definitely warm now ni some warm bordering on hot okay kind of is it dangerous no it's kind of nice my towels go here what and yours go uh I'll put like a hook over there for you that okay that are we done then okay now back to hanging this curtain so the original Hardware had the curtain hanging down on two little hooks but I want the top of my curtain to be flush with the top of my window so instead I'm using these small 1-in corner brackets and I'll also need some super glue I'm cutting away a bit of the fabric on the back so I can super glue the bracket right to that top plastic rod once that had fully dried I just used some small screws to screw through the bracket into the top of my window frame and it works I love how simple yet effective this curtain is for this space okay today is an exciting day because relle is here and she has that finished hacked Ikea vanity for me I'm going to help her get get it installed always done this I'm like where you everyone does that and I swear I'm like it does nothing you there's no way you're telling you hear a difference yeah okay like putting on a pair of pants now how do I get out no I'm good no no it's fine just doing it a silly way I'm good this is nice if you want to know more about this whole process make sure you check out Michelle's full video on this hack it's out now and it's linked below I cannot get over how well that matches like it is the same no big deal this is only permanently attaching the trim it looks so good it looks so good okay let's see it oh my goodness it looks so good it's so good oh okay all right and as I suspected and hoped like the real wood trim makes the whole thing give the illusion of real nice take that Ikea drawer fronts are on our top support is prepared look how good now we're ready to do the big thing are you ready Michelle oh I'm super pump I really believe you when you say that okay okay yeah okay oh my God Melle hey yeah look how literally exact that is are you impressed Austin very could you have pulled this off I would have made it out of wood so I had asked Melle um when she was cutting the stone only if it was going well and it wasn't being really difficult if she would mind cutting an extra piece cuz we had so much to do um a little backsplash behind the sink cuz we didn't have anything I was honestly going to do nothing and just see how long it lasted cuz it's it's quite deep right yeah like from the faucet like I didn't think I'd get too much water back there but seeing it it's so nice and it just like it's a little bit of like it ties this into there which I really like and was it that much more work to do that piece no not all are you lying to me I'm not lying actually it was like our first like good piece after our test piece um and so the cut wasn't great at the beginning and it wasn't great at the end but we're like we'll just take that chunk out of the middle so we've just been using silicone to stick everything because that's literally the instructions that came with the sink which just silicone it to the unit so it's been working so far it's literally perfect and I honestly like I honestly think that's what made the bathroom like it's so good no for real like the color of this ties in with the offhe of the wall and then the wood makes this look so much nicer and it's so good I think it's a lovely addition to an already fabulous bathroom can't wait to see it when it's all put together me too okay thanks for my pleasure see we are so close to being finished which has me thinking about final touches which is my favorite part of any makeover and I'm thinking about how I'm going to style inside this shower now if we go back to the very first time I ever came up with a plan for this space I had drawn in a shower Niche along the wall which is like essentially a recessed shelf into the side of the shower for many reasons we decided not to do that it would affect the ability to insulate the bathroom as well as we wanted to so that's off the table in its place I don't really have a better plan at the moment I of course thought about you know the many different types of shelves you could put in a shower some involv screwing into the tile which I don't love that idea either because anytime you put another hole in the wall of a shower that's just more places for potential leaks down the road there's also lots of really great like suction cup or sticky type shelves but I worry about their ability to hold things long term I just don't know so since we need to do something I have a plan and I don't know if this is going to work long term but I think we'll try it together and just see how it goes turns out there's a lot of really great teak shelves teak benches teak stools that are good for showers um problem is they're a little bit pricey so I was thinking about it and then realized I think I own a teak stool I think I own two teak stools way back when I first did my backyard makeover I had these beautiful teak wood stools that I used now I wasn't the greatest stool mom didn't do the best job of taking care of them over the winter they may have sat outside so they're not in pristine condition so I think I'm going to since I already own them attempt to restore them this is a teak oil protects restores and leaves a natural finish So the plan is restore the teak stool as best I can place the teak stool in the shower to hold shampoo and conditioner and other shower items and we'll just see how long this lasts I love the fact that I already own this piece and I get to use it again for a new project and you know what if if I have to put in a shelf down the road then so be it but we're going to try this for now I'm so impressed with how well this is working look how nice and healthy this part looks again I think this part that's you know fully lost its color is unsavable but that's okay that is okay with me stols are looking good so I'm going to let those dry and move on to what I think is the last install of this space a light up mirror for the second Vanity now somehow I only got clips of me installing the hardware for it and not the mirror itself which means you're just going to have to wait for the very end to see how it looks turned on so let's just get to that you know what it is it's time for final touches guys we always joke about making it a song to the theme of The Final Countdown for final touches should we do that it's the final touches this is where my my synth keyboard comes in you get it okay let's do it so while we style I just want to leave you with one thought often when we think of doing an entire room makeover we think of all the things we need to buy to make the space feel brand new and exciting but I want you to consider what items you might already own that can be repurposed restyled and reused like for example this circle mirror I've had for so many years the wood stools you know I resealed them and even this piece of art above the toilet all had previous lives in past makeovers of mine and honestly I think they look so good in this new bathroom and it does feel like an entirely new space to me so the moment is here guys the bathroom was looking good but let's take it back to the very very beginning to see where we came from so we can appreciate where we are now in the beginning we had plastic vinyl fatile walls cracking floors and then we had well nothing we had a completely empty room a gutted space no walls no real floor and no ceiling but then through many days and weeks of hard hard hard work we now have the most Serene spa-like bathroom of my dream feels like so real to say that it's done I think if I wasn't so like heads down in this entire journey I would probably cry In This Moment Like months ago me realizing my whole house was was rotting at the front if you told me I'd be here now I think I would cry thank you to everyone who joined me on this journey and left so many amazing comments in all the past episodes I honestly think that's what helped me get to where I am now not only your motivation but your like really useful tips on what I should do so this might be like the bathroom that YouTube helped build but you guys know I have more basis to do so if you want to see the continuation of the renovation to the 7s Farmhouse then hit that subscribe button and the notification Bell and I will see you in the next one byehi guys welcome back to the channel okay I have been going through a very long and window you'll need to cut evenly from both sides since there are magnets in the middle that you'll want to keep centered then I'm just using a little hacksaw to cut them down this was honestly so easy to cut that I'm pretty sure you could just use an exacto knife blade to do this too for my fabric I'm going to use a curtain that I also picked up well at Ikea so I'm cutting out a rectangle the size of my window plus leaving some extra seam allowance and even leaving a little more on the top so that I can fold it over and make a tube for that first plastic rod which doesn't have any magnets in it I'm then doing a simple hem on both the sides and the bottom as well as folding over and making that tube for the top piece to put those magnet strips back in I decided to take apart this super lightweight material that was used to hold the strips in in the original Ikea shade I was worried that using my fabric to make these tubes might weigh it down too much and make the magnets not stick I lined those up to the back of my shade and sewed them in place make sure you don't sew up the ends yet though because we'll need to put the magnet strips back in once those were in I just did a simple hand Stitch to close up the ends I was getting ready to hang this but then I realized I should probably get this window stained first so let's take a quick break to do that okay going to let that window dry in the meantime let's install some other things starting with this very simple toilet paper holder now oh speaking of we have a toilet oh my God am I really but to have a talk with you on the toilet yeah let's do it so as you guys have seen Austin and I have done like almost all of this bathroom ourselves and not because any of us have done that before we've just learned so much along the way watching lot of video tutorials online but I do also want to be honest with you guys about where we got help one was at the very beginning of this whole project we brought in a contractor just to like consult and then the second thing is that we did have a plumber come in to hook everything up that was one of those things where if we were wrong about it it would be a huge mistake if we had a leak behind the wall oh and the one last thing is that that same contractor from the very beginning did come back to help Austin install the glass walls for the shower because that was another thing that was not worth the risk this shower was expensive and um if Austin and I had dropped the glass in an attempt to uh install it that would have been a $1,000 mistake and um that's all I'm going to continue to DIY by putting this in the wall now that I'm here I can actually see where it makes the most sense yeah that feels feels right okay ni okay and then you might have also noticed this electrical box here on the wall that's still open and thought that's an awfully weird place to put a light uh well light's not going there because what is going there is something that is literally big on my house bucket list since I found out these were a thing like I think before I even owned a home um and that is a heated towel bar I know for those of you that own this this is probably obvious but for anyone that hasn't heard about this picture when your towels come fresh out of the dryer and you just want to wrap yourself in them because it's so good you can get that experience through a heated towel bar or at least that's what I'm hoping they also make plug-in versions of these so for anyone thinking that you would have had to think about doing that before your bathroom don't worry there's a solution for you too I don't know why I'm the biggest like advocate for this now I want everyone to have one just told Austin to go flip the breaker back on cuz I hooked this up and yes I did turn off the breaker before I did this why cuz I don't want to die did you do it yeah oh a red light turned on Tada wow looks amazing it's like you climb on it I could I could climb on it probably until you burn your hands I wonder how hot it's actually going to get you fall against it like until you trip no there's no way it's that hot oh yeah that's definitely warm now ni some warm bordering on hot okay kind of is it dangerous no it's kind of nice my towels go here what and yours go uh I'll put like a hook over there for you that okay that are we done then okay now back to hanging this curtain so the original Hardware had the curtain hanging down on two little hooks but I want the top of my curtain to be flush with the top of my window so instead I'm using these small 1-in corner brackets and I'll also need some super glue I'm cutting away a bit of the fabric on the back so I can super glue the bracket right to that top plastic rod once that had fully dried I just used some small screws to screw through the bracket into the top of my window frame and it works I love how simple yet effective this curtain is for this space okay today is an exciting day because relle is here and she has that finished hacked Ikea vanity for me I'm going to help her get get it installed always done this I'm like where you everyone does that and I swear I'm like it does nothing you there's no way you're telling you hear a difference yeah okay like putting on a pair of pants now how do I get out no I'm good no no it's fine just doing it a silly way I'm good this is nice if you want to know more about this whole process make sure you check out Michelle's full video on this hack it's out now and it's linked below I cannot get over how well that matches like it is the same no big deal this is only permanently attaching the trim it looks so good it looks so good okay let's see it oh my goodness it looks so good it's so good oh okay all right and as I suspected and hoped like the real wood trim makes the whole thing give the illusion of real nice take that Ikea drawer fronts are on our top support is prepared look how good now we're ready to do the big thing are you ready Michelle oh I'm super pump I really believe you when you say that okay okay yeah okay oh my God Melle hey yeah look how literally exact that is are you impressed Austin very could you have pulled this off I would have made it out of wood so I had asked Melle um when she was cutting the stone only if it was going well and it wasn't being really difficult if she would mind cutting an extra piece cuz we had so much to do um a little backsplash behind the sink cuz we didn't have anything I was honestly going to do nothing and just see how long it lasted cuz it's it's quite deep right yeah like from the faucet like I didn't think I'd get too much water back there but seeing it it's so nice and it just like it's a little bit of like it ties this into there which I really like and was it that much more work to do that piece no not all are you lying to me I'm not lying actually it was like our first like good piece after our test piece um and so the cut wasn't great at the beginning and it wasn't great at the end but we're like we'll just take that chunk out of the middle so we've just been using silicone to stick everything because that's literally the instructions that came with the sink which just silicone it to the unit so it's been working so far it's literally perfect and I honestly like I honestly think that's what made the bathroom like it's so good no for real like the color of this ties in with the offhe of the wall and then the wood makes this look so much nicer and it's so good I think it's a lovely addition to an already fabulous bathroom can't wait to see it when it's all put together me too okay thanks for my pleasure see we are so close to being finished which has me thinking about final touches which is my favorite part of any makeover and I'm thinking about how I'm going to style inside this shower now if we go back to the very first time I ever came up with a plan for this space I had drawn in a shower Niche along the wall which is like essentially a recessed shelf into the side of the shower for many reasons we decided not to do that it would affect the ability to insulate the bathroom as well as we wanted to so that's off the table in its place I don't really have a better plan at the moment I of course thought about you know the many different types of shelves you could put in a shower some involv screwing into the tile which I don't love that idea either because anytime you put another hole in the wall of a shower that's just more places for potential leaks down the road there's also lots of really great like suction cup or sticky type shelves but I worry about their ability to hold things long term I just don't know so since we need to do something I have a plan and I don't know if this is going to work long term but I think we'll try it together and just see how it goes turns out there's a lot of really great teak shelves teak benches teak stools that are good for showers um problem is they're a little bit pricey so I was thinking about it and then realized I think I own a teak stool I think I own two teak stools way back when I first did my backyard makeover I had these beautiful teak wood stools that I used now I wasn't the greatest stool mom didn't do the best job of taking care of them over the winter they may have sat outside so they're not in pristine condition so I think I'm going to since I already own them attempt to restore them this is a teak oil protects restores and leaves a natural finish So the plan is restore the teak stool as best I can place the teak stool in the shower to hold shampoo and conditioner and other shower items and we'll just see how long this lasts I love the fact that I already own this piece and I get to use it again for a new project and you know what if if I have to put in a shelf down the road then so be it but we're going to try this for now I'm so impressed with how well this is working look how nice and healthy this part looks again I think this part that's you know fully lost its color is unsavable but that's okay that is okay with me stols are looking good so I'm going to let those dry and move on to what I think is the last install of this space a light up mirror for the second Vanity now somehow I only got clips of me installing the hardware for it and not the mirror itself which means you're just going to have to wait for the very end to see how it looks turned on so let's just get to that you know what it is it's time for final touches guys we always joke about making it a song to the theme of The Final Countdown for final touches should we do that it's the final touches this is where my my synth keyboard comes in you get it okay let's do it so while we style I just want to leave you with one thought often when we think of doing an entire room makeover we think of all the things we need to buy to make the space feel brand new and exciting but I want you to consider what items you might already own that can be repurposed restyled and reused like for example this circle mirror I've had for so many years the wood stools you know I resealed them and even this piece of art above the toilet all had previous lives in past makeovers of mine and honestly I think they look so good in this new bathroom and it does feel like an entirely new space to me so the moment is here guys the bathroom was looking good but let's take it back to the very very beginning to see where we came from so we can appreciate where we are now in the beginning we had plastic vinyl fatile walls cracking floors and then we had well nothing we had a completely empty room a gutted space no walls no real floor and no ceiling but then through many days and weeks of hard hard hard work we now have the most Serene spa-like bathroom of my dream feels like so real to say that it's done I think if I wasn't so like heads down in this entire journey I would probably cry In This Moment Like months ago me realizing my whole house was was rotting at the front if you told me I'd be here now I think I would cry thank you to everyone who joined me on this journey and left so many amazing comments in all the past episodes I honestly think that's what helped me get to where I am now not only your motivation but your like really useful tips on what I should do so this might be like the bathroom that YouTube helped build but you guys know I have more basis to do so if you want to see the continuation of the renovation to the 7s Farmhouse then hit that subscribe button and the notification Bell and I will see you in the next one byehi guys welcome back to the channel okay I have been going through a very long and pretty exory makeover to my primary bathroom and we're finishing it up in this video I promise we're so close to being done and boy am I ready welcome back to the series where I challenge myself to use thrifted materials and a Love of All Things retro to DIY our family home from this Farmhouse to that at70s house there have been so many of you invested in this journey and I cannot thank you enough for supporting me through this whole thing all of your comments on the various episodes leading up to this moment have been so helpful and so instrumental to getting me to where we are today so let's take it back to the very beginning as a quick reminder for everything that has happened so far so almost 2 years ago I moved into my dream 70s Farmhouse and I have slowly been renovating It All Space by space there was one space though that I was very hesitant to get to and that was the primary bathroom because it was just bad the window was literally falling apart the shower had so much gooped up COA everywhere which made us think that there was leaks behind it we didn't even want to touch the space until last summer we finally said let's do it my husband and I got our suits on and we went to demolish this whole Space now our thought was let's take it back to the shell and then we can just pretty it back up again once we got to the Shell we realized well this the shell is pretty bad too it's covered in mold the wood is all rotted it's probably not worth saving so we went a step further and we demolished that too until basically we had an empty space in our garage which by the way the bathroom backs into the garage so my husband Austin and I got to it we watched a ton of tutorials on YouTube and learned everything we could about building a bathroom we put up studs again we insulated we drywalled we put in a brand new window to make this space feel bright and Airy then it was time for flooring we were doing heated flooring guys because this bathroom had to be warm once the heated flooring was in it was time to tile on top of that to which we picked potentially a questionable blue green marble slate tile and turns out I loved it but now where do we go from here with a half started bathroom with some blue elements that I wasn't planning on I don't know um okay I got happy dance here while you guys take a second to subscribe for the journey that has been going on cool you done that all right let's go so something that's always been on the design plan since the very beginning is a slatted wood ceiling and as you can see we haven't done that yet and I need to know exactly how far down that wood ceiling is going to go so that I can place the shower tiles right up against it so shower tile can't be done until ceiling is done so we're going to do sealing first first and then go back to tiling um this whole process has been one big journey in figuring out the order of operations of everything because certain things can't happen until other things happen first and that's been fun to navigate that hello somebody here if you are taking on a room makeover of your own we have a course that's going to guide you through the entire process including what order to do everything in how to design how to even come up with your design style and then how do you approach buying everything and putting it in the room it's all the knowledge we've accumulated over years of doing room makeovers for people and we've put it all in an easy to digest course that will take you through the Journey of a makeover of your own that's that and it's in the description below but um let's get on to the ceiling so this is what we're using it is Cedar tongue and groove meaning that it's got one Edge that sticks out and one Edge that has an indent so the pieces can kind of click together nicely when I first pitched this idea that I wanted to do a wood ceiling in the bathroom um there was a lot of questions about can you actually do wood in a bathroom like will it hold up to shower Steam and whatnot um and that's why I'm going with the choice to use cedar cedar is really rot resistant it's great for steamy environments and of like a cedar sauna they use cedar for that and it holds up so I'm feeling good about this choice of wood for this project and especially when you do the proper preparation work like putting in Vapor Barrier and of course a uh shower vent fan that will reduce the s in here so we were loving how the cedar ceiling looked so much that Austin had the idea to trim the weird in between space between the bathroom and the bedroom with the same Cedar this is kind of a tricky space anyway since it has some funky angles and was not really easily drywall B so I think this is a great solution freaking amazing this is the most exciting change that we've done so far in my opinion in and it's like the first real thing from the original mood board that has happened we just temporarily screwed in the rainfall shower head just to see it and like this is selling bathroom so much I I don't want to cry it's so so so good now we're finally ready to tile the shower which for that we have these just really big 2x two off-white really heavy did you mention that they're reallyy they're really heavy how many pounds do you think a lot I think that the finish of this is so nice it's like it's satin satin's the word it's not matte but it's not high gloss it's just going to be really nice in the shower I didn't want to do something too too loud because the floor is already well it's covered now but the floor is already a color and I think this will be just make this whole area feel nice and big and open and spotlike are you getting the Vision Austin oh was I supposed to be listening can I tell you something else too the reason I wanted to do really big tile is because the thing that gets the grossest in showers the fastest is the gro Gro becomes like off-colored and mud collects on it so I was like let's minimize the amount of gr lines in the shower so we're doing big Ts and we're going to do like a dirt grout so that like you can't see when it gets dirty cuz it is already dirt what's the color of shower slime yeah like that in Gro please on two of the tiles we'll have to make some cuts for the plumbing we don't have a ton of extra tiles so I'm going to be making a template on some cardboard first to make sure that it fits perfectly then tracing that onto the tile so it can be cut hi is looking so good and once it's fully dried we are going to add the final step which is the matching off white gr good morning okay you guys ready to see something very exciting we now officially have a shower with walls we had a contractor come out yesterday and together with Austin put all the walls up and it has a door that closes excuse me sir this is my shower W fit another person in here maybe more pass the shampoo thank you I'm really happy with the choice to the glass walls and everything is coming together now back to the things that we are doing um I think we're going to put the sink vanity up now y p so perfect that's cool brushing my teeth why do you put so much back into it cuz it's so low don't make this sink anymore so if we break it we're in trouble we're going to have to cast our own out of uh that's right out of concrete that's right it would actually be pretty sweet now does it feel too low it's a thick sink pretty cool nice stuff you want to see the faucet ah it worked wow that's really nice A little glow you know brilliant brilliant no I got it you may have noticed that I didn't put the drawers in this unit yet and that is because they're actually with relle she is making me custom handles for this as well as doing a whole upcycle buildout for the second sinkless vanity that's going over here that's what the tape is on the wall I'm just figuring out spacing of everything this is a a work in progress very much so so while she does that I'm going to do an Ikea Hack of my own on a much smaller scale perhaps but okay Windows behind me we've got the wood trim around it it's looking good still yet to be stained but a lot of my inspo that I was pinning for bathrooms didn't have any like overwhelmingly stand out window treatments like if at all so I want to do something easy simple and understated that's just going to look kind of nice in that window box there so I am going to be taking the ring blama from Ikea do you see it I got this one in the Asis section I think the ones they stock NOW are in like a green fabric this is white either way it's not exactly the shade and fabric that I would like it to be in so we're going to swap that out and I'll show you how this works over here this this is so genius in its Simplicity it's like a Roman shade but there's no strings or cords or mechanics it literally just opens and closes via magnets like this right I love stuff that is simple like that but as you can see it's too long and it's too wide and I'd like it to be a little more of an off white so the first step was to entirely disassemble the Ikea curtain because we're going to need all of the inside Parts it comes with these little hooks at the top which I won't be using but you can keep these if you want to hang it back up the same way as the original one for those plastic rods I'm marking down just shy of the width of my window you'll need to cut evenly from both sides since there are magnets in the middle that you'll want to keep centered then I'm just using a little hacksaw to cut them down this was honestly so easy to cut that I'm pretty sure you could just use an exacto knife blade to do this too for my fabric I'm going to use a curtain that I also picked up well at Ikea so I'm cutting out a rectangle the size of my window plus leaving some extra seam allowance and even leaving a little more on the top so that I can fold it over and make a tube for that first plastic rod which doesn't have any magnets in it I'm then doing a simple hem on both the sides and the bottom as well as folding over and making that tube for the top piece to put those magnet strips back in I decided to take apart this super lightweight material that was used to hold the strips in in the original Ikea shade I was worried that using my fabric to make these tubes might weigh it down too much and make the magnets not stick I lined those up to the back of my shade and sewed them in place make sure you don't sew up the ends yet though because we'll need to put the magnet strips back in once those were in I just did a simple hand Stitch to close up the ends I was getting ready to hang this but then I realized I should probably get this window stained first so let's take a quick break to do that okay going to let that window dry in the meantime let's install some other things starting with this very simple toilet paper holder now oh speaking of we have a toilet oh my God am I really but to have a talk with you on the toilet yeah let's do it so as you guys have seen Austin and I have done like almost all of this bathroom ourselves and not because any of us have done that before we've just learned so much along the way watching lot of video tutorials online but I do also want to be here what and yours go uh I'll put like a hook over there for you that okay that are we done then okay now back to hanging this curtain so the original Hardware had the curtain hanging down on two little hooks but I want the top of my curtain to be flush with the top of my window so instead I'm using these small 1-in corner brackets and I'll also need some super glue I'm cutting away a bit of
