Five Bluetooth Speakers to Rock You into the New Year
If you want to groove to songs about cats and don't mind sharing with other people, then Bluetooth speakers are the way to go. Whether you prefer big boom boxes or palm-sized ones, I've got five recommendations that will rock you into the new year.
The Bose SoundLink Flex is one of my personal favorites and while the speaker came out late last year, it's still one of the best sounding speakers around. CNET executive editor and audio expert David Carney states that the flex arguably is the best sounding wireless speaker for its compact size, offering great bass and unmatched clarity especially in the vocals. The speaker gave me a newfound appreciation for songs I've heard countless times thanks to its ability to separate each individual instrument in the mix. Its silicone exterior is soft and doesn't easily scuff up, and Bose claims that the steel grill won't peel or flake, resistant to corrosion and UV light. If you have two flexes, you can even pair them together to make it stereo output. I was very impressed by this feature and found myself lounging around just listening to music for hours. Overall, the SoundLink Flex is one of my favorite ways to listen, currently retailing for $150.
The Wonderboom 2 is another one of my favorite Bluetooth speakers, and its three is no different. The three has improved battery life, thanks to a new Bluetooth chip that allows for up to 131 feet of range compared to just 100. Its unique mini soda can shape allows for great listening angles no matter which side you're on. The sound is also consistently well-balanced, regardless of the genre. On its bottom, there's an outdoor mode button that immediately makes the speaker louder and clearer. Just like the Wonderboom 2, this feature also allows it to float in water. It comes in four colors, including a gray and greenish one. However, it lacks an in-app equalizer, which is a bummer because it's a pretty common feature nowadays. Despite this, I still think it's a solid choice for $100.
Next up is the JBL Flip 6, if you're familiar with the previous version, this model will look very similar but with improved sound quality, especially in its base. It's fully waterproof and dust-proof with an IP67 rating, delivering 12 hours of battery life at moderate volume levels. It's compact and lightweight enough to carry around, but if you want to go completely hands-free, you can use the rope that comes tied around the speaker. If you're in the market for something small and portable, I'd suggest the Stormbox Micro 2. It's about the size of your palm, great to tie it around your belt or bike handle, and despite its small size, it still delivers a pretty well-balanced and decently loud experience. It also has a built-in power bank perfect if your phone is running low on battery throughout the day. Its design may not be the most eye-catching, but its portability and solid sound quality make it easy to recommend.
The Stormbox Micro 2 retails at $60, but it's oftentimes on sale for even less throughout the year. TripIt is known for its great audio quality at an affordable price, and their latest speaker, the Tri-Bit Stormbox Blast, is no different. It's IPX7 waterproof-rated, with the first thing that grabbed me were the bursts of colors that jumped to Every Beat - it'll be hard to find a more eye-catching speaker than this one right here. If you want to turn up the bass even more, you can press the X space button, but we suggest diving into the EQ in the Tri-Bit app for better balancing, especially in the mid-range. However, I have to admit that this thing is pretty freaking heavy, clocking in at about 12 pounds, which made it difficult to carry around for long periods of time. But it does make for a solid replacement for dumbbells, and its music sounds consistently well-balanced.
Lastly, there's the Tri-Bit Stormbox Blast, which I'd like to draw your attention to. If you're in the market for something new, this speaker is definitely worth considering. Its IPX7 waterproof rating makes it perfect for outdoor use or even a trip to the beach, and its unique design will surely catch your eye. With great bass and clear audio quality, this speaker is sure to impress anyone who hears it. However, as with any speaker, there's always room for improvement.
If you want to know what I like about each of these speakers, let me tell you - they all sound great in their own way. But if you're looking for my top pick, then the Bose SoundLink Flex is definitely the one to go for. Its compact size and impressive sound quality make it perfect for anyone who wants a reliable Bluetooth speaker that won't break the bank.
