Apple's WWDC 2023 keynote has officially kicked off, and we're excited to dive into all the new features and updates that Apple has in store for its users.
One of the most exciting features announced is the enhanced Messages app. With this update, you can now pin up to nine of your most important conversations at the top of your screen, making it easier to access them without having to swipe through your entire conversation list like an animal. The pins are profile pics, so they're easy to identify, and they sync across all your devices, just like your messages do. This feature is designed to help the people who use Messages the most, making it a game-changer for those who rely on it daily.
But that's not all - Maps has also received a significant update with a collection of environmentally friendly new features. These include cycling directions, electronic vehicle routing, and congestion zone routing, which will make navigating the city more efficient and sustainable. And if you're driving an electric or hybrid car, Apple Maps will even call out speed and traffic cameras for you, so you can avoid getting a ticket. This feature is rolling out to Canada, Ireland, and the UK this year, marking another step towards a more eco-friendly transportation experience.
Speaking of cars, Apple has also introduced Car Keys, which allow you to unlock and start your car using just an iPhone NFC tap. This feature takes time, as the automotive industry makes updates that seem positively speedy compared to Mac Mini upgrades. However, with Car Keys, you can now share keys with trusted individuals over Messages, giving them just as much or as little access as you want, including limits on acceleration, top speed, traction, and even audio volume. This feature is perfect for households with multiple drivers who need to be able to control the car's settings.
But what about security? Apple has taken steps to ensure that your personal data remains safe. With Car Keys, you can set double or triple tapping the back of an iPhone 10 or later to do things like Launch Control Center or Notification Center. This feature is buried in the Accessibility settings, but it's a game-changer for those who want more control over their device.
For those who use FaceTime frequently, there's also good news - group FaceTime now detects sign language and makes the person using it more prominent, so everyone can see the signs being communicated. This feature is designed to make communication more accessible and inclusive, especially for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. And if that wasn't enough, Apple has also introduced voiceover recognition, which uses machine learning to identify interface elements on the screen, even if apps or websites haven't labeled them properly.
But perhaps the most exciting feature announced is Brilliance New Neural Networks Course. This course teaches you complex concepts by breaking them down into bite-sized, understandable chunks. You start with interactive explorations and then progress to learning more advanced topics over time. The course covers a wide range of subjects, from physics and engineering to computer science and programming.
And as if all these features weren't enough, Apple is also offering an exclusive deal for the first 200 viewers who sign up for the course - they'll get 20% off their annual premium subscription. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone looking to learn new skills or expand their knowledge in a fun and engaging way.
Overall, it's clear that Apple has put a lot of thought into its WWDC keynote this year, with a focus on innovation, accessibility, and user experience. Whether you're a hardcore tech enthusiast or just someone who wants to stay up-to-date on the latest features from Apple, there's something for everyone in this keynote.

on every iPhonefrom the 2015 iPhone 6Sto the 2016 original iPhone SE, on up.Also the current generation iPod touch 7.So, if you're running iOS 13, today, you'll be able to run iOS14 as soon as it ships.Of course, that doesn't meanevery single new feature will be there. But all the basic stuffand security updates at the very least. And as always, DeveloperBeta is already out,Public Beta comes in the month of Julyand release is expected around September.Okay, our long internationalnightmare is over, kind of, almost. With iOS 14, you cannow choose default apps, but only for email and web browsers, because these are the ones that peoplewere apparently asking for the most. And probably only wheniOS 14 ships this fall, because developers have toadd a flag to their appsto identify them asavailable for default status. But, when all of that goes live, you'll be able to set Gmailand Chrome or Outlook and Edgeor whatever you want to handleyour email and your web.And that also meansApple's Mail and Safari, will have to fight tokeep you or win you over, which is better for everyone.Okay, our long internationalnightmare is over.Wait, I said that already.Well, for real, though, nomore full screen takeovers.None, not the phone app, not FaceTime, not voice over IP apps like Skype, not Search not even Siri.No longer will you loseeverything else about our iPhonesjust because someone wants to talk to us,or we wanna type or talk to our phones.Instead, call apps just get a banner, much like every otherapps gotten for years now, swipe down to answer, aswipe up to flick it away. For Siri, instead of thefull screen transcript,a glowing Siri ball of power just fires upon top of the dock and thendoes whatever we tell it to.No transcript, an app just launches, notification just appears.I still love some form ofpersistence Siri though, like on Mac OS, where Icould tear off answers I needfor a while and pin them like widgetsuntil I'm done needing them.Things like recipes, let me know if I'm alone inthinking that in the comments. And of course, none of this addressesSiri just getting plain old better. So we'll have to wait andsee how that works outover the course of the Beta.Ripped straight from the iPadcircuit, I don't know 2015,Picture-in-Picture iscoming to the iPhone. It works pretty much exactlyhow it's been workingon the iPad all these many years.Leave a video app or tap the buttonand the PiP just pops up.Drag it around, pinch to zoom it,hide it off to the side, all that jazz. Now, Apple will just support it,will just make it work for all videosusing default controls, like in Safari, but apps will have toimplement it themselves. And here's where I painfully point outthat even five yearslater, YouTube has chosennot to support it inthe YouTube app at all, which is all shades of shameful. So yell at them on Twitteruntil they get their app act togetheror just use YouTube inSafari for PiP until they do.Though, it does seem likewe're getting 4K YouTube, thanks to the AV1 codec, which is supposed to replacethe H265 Apple's been usingand the VP9 Google's been using.Though it's unclear ifthat's only on 4K deviceslike the Apple TV or on alldevices through AirPlay. We'll have to wait and see. Also, though unrelated, you can now throw videos upas textures in reality cutscenes, which is just totally crazycool from an AR point of view.Camera is getting faster,up to 90% on shots, hitting up to four frames per second.Portrait mode is up to 15%faster shot-to-shot as well. You can also choose toprioritize speed over processingif that's what you want.QuickTake video is nowsupported on iPhone XR,iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.So everyone can get theirinstant TikTok action on.And all iPhone modelsnow get quick togglesfor video resolution and frame rate as AT.Also, QuickTake can nowbe set to volume downso you get back burst mode on volume up.Double as AT.Night mode on iPhone 11will help you stay steadieror let you cancel out faster. And you can choose tocapture mirrored selfiesif the differencebetween preview and photois just always thrilling you. Also if you set a custom exposurethat can now persist acrossmultiple shots as well. With the home screenApple is going equal partsMarie Kondo and Thomas Frank.See App Library takes all the junkin your home screen trunksand just throws it intowhat are essentially smart folders. You get suggested apps, which usesOn-device machinelearning to guess the appsit thinks you'll use next, based on your previous behavior, time of day, location andother signals just like that. Also recently downloadedapps and App Clipsmore on those in a minute. And apps just sorted by category.Even there thoughOn-device machine learningwill surface the apps itthinks you'll want to use next.So you can just tap to launch or dive inand spelunk your way through everything. It'll also order thesmart folder themselvesbased on how often you use them.Spatially, the AppLibrary lives to the rightof the home screens. But because it's so much betterthan the graveyard of appsmost of our home screens have become, you can now hide those extra homersand just keep the App Libraryjust a swipe or two away. But, what if you don'teven need a full app?Well, first widget all the things. That's what, Apple's takenthe rich information dense, highly glanceablecomplications from watch OSand use them to reforge iOS widgets, like from the shards of Narsil, you can still get tothem on the Today screenif you prefer keeping themalways just a swipe away. But there's a new widget gallery as well. From either pick a widget you want, and you can drag it toright onto the home screen,if that's where you want it,move it around, place itanywhere, Kwazii related. If you're in the US, you'll also getdark skylight hyperlocal weatherin the widget and the app.Apple and developer widgetscan be a variety of sizes, including small, medium, and large. And it can contain focused informationlike details about a singlestock or general information, like an overview of yourfour favorite stocks. You can stack up to 10 widgetson top of each other to save spaceand swipe through themjust like drinking fromthe widget firehose. There's even a smart stack widget whichlike the Siri watch face, tries to predict the widgetyou'll most want to check out next, and an actual series suggestion widgetto serve you up one tap coffeeorders or podcast playback,or everything you'llactually want to do next.My biggest question is,will you actually use them?Android stats show onlynerds ever change widgetsfrom the default or interactwith them much at all.So let me know in the comments, not only if you'll experimentthe hell out of them at first, but whether you thinkyou'll keep using theminto the future, and most importantly, whether your moremainstream family memberswill even ever enable them.Second, App Clips. Now Google's had appfragments for a while now,but I've never really seen too many peopletalking about them, much less raving. So I legit don't know howApp Clips will be received.Because Apple often canpopularize technologyin a way that goes wellbeyond being all capsfirst exclamation mark one, one.For example, you park your rental carand you find out you needan app to pay the meter.Instead of having to find out what app, search for it, downloadit, create an accountand jump through a ton of other hoops, while you're desperate to just get going, all you have to do is tap an NFC tag, scan a QR code or hit a link. And just exactly the part ofthe app that you need appears.Login with Apple just handles who you are,and Apple Pay just takescare of the transaction, then the App Clip just goesaway without any accessto your personal or private data.Or if you need it again, youcan go to the App Libraryand find it or even install it.Same if you wanna rent a bikeor do any number of unexpected things. You know the feature everynerd eye roll so hard, but every mainstreamcustomer just raises to findthe perfect eye rollexpression for Memoji. There are over 20 newhair and headwear styles, including headband, poo emoji you not.And of course masks because literallyeveryone who actually knows anythinglike you know medicine and sciencesays you should be wearing them right now. Also age options because noneof us are getting any younger. There's also a new more Maclike emoji picker in general,so you can more easily find just exactlythe eye roll expressionyou're looking for.Right now I assume.Messages is doing more to help the peoplewho use it the most. You can pin up to nine of yourmost important conversations. You don't have to go swipingthrough to find them, like an animal. The pins are profile pics,so they're easy to identifysort of like static chat heads, and they sync across all of your deviceslike your messages do.They'll also animate messages, tap backs and typingindicators so you knowwhat's up with any givenconversation at a glance. If you're in a group convo, you can type a specific person's nameto make sure they see your message, either in line or as a notification. And they all thread up too.Maps now has a collectionof environmentallyand frankly human friendly new featuresincluding cycling directions, electronic vehicle routingand congestion zone routing.Plus, they'll call out speedand traffic cameras for youfor the ticket does I hope. Also Canada, Ireland andUK will be rolling outthe new style AppleMaps as well this year.Car keys mean, you can now use your iPhoneto unlock and start yourcar all by just NFC tapping.Well, if your car is a brand new beamer, but these kinds of features take timebecause the automotiveindustry makes Mac Mini updateslook positively speedy.Still too soon. You can share keys with thepeople you trust over messagesand give them just as much oras little access as you want, including limits on acceleration, top speed, traction, even audio volume.Perfect to make everyteen in your householdhate your breathing guts. There's even a power reserve featureso car keys keep workingfor up to five hoursafter your phone runs out of juice, just so you don't getstuck after a long dayplaying Pokémon GO or, you know, using Facebook or TickTock.Okay, so Apple kind ofburied this one herejust to make sure you werestill paying attention,go into settings Accessibility, Touch, and you can now set it, sothat double or triple tappingthe back of an iPhone 10 or laterwill do things like Launch Control Centeror Notification Center. No camera there yet though, alas.If group FaceTime detects sign language,it'll make the personusing it more prominent,so everyone can more easilysee the sign language, which is very nice. There's also a voiceover recognition, where machine learningrecognizes interface elementson the screen, even if apps or websiteshaven't done their jobs andlabeled them appropriately. It'll also do similar forimages, explaining every elementin the photo that it canidentify, as well as reading outany text that can make out legit awesome. How this all works is super cool. And you can learn all about itwith Brilliance NewNeural Networks Course. Here's an example. You have to locate your keysbut your room is hella messy. As you look, your walltiles change colors, revealing how close or faraway your last guess wasfrom your keys.Even if you have no clear indicationhow to structure your guesses, you can still get betterround after round, figuring out your strategybased on feedback and finding your keysin surprisingly few guesses.Brilliance is teaching youcomplex concepts, just like thisby breaking them up intobite-sized understandable chunks. You start by having fun withtheir interactive explorations, but over time, you'll beamazed at what you can learn.Go to brilliant.org/reneritchieand sign up for free. And the first 200 ofyou will also level upwith 20% off the annualpremium
