engineand how it's able to propelthis 5,600 pound machineup to 60 miles an hour inless than four seconds, how its intelligent suspension systemcan see what's coming before you do,and how the Rocket 900 beat)Well, all right, all right, all right. Thanks to Rayconfor sponsoring this episodeof "Bumper 2 Bumper".I've been using Raycon earbudslong before anybody paid us to use them.I wasn't trying to make a statement.I just liked them.I like popping in my Everyday E25 earbudswhile I'm driving throughthe ambiguous desertduring magic hour, listening to freeformjazz and whale sounds. It guides my escapefrom being a celebrity. The Everyday E25,they gave me six hours of playtime. They sound just as good asit was other premium earbudsbut at half the price. They come on a lot of cool colors too.I like colors.(car door closes)It'd be real cool ifyou guys could head overto buyraycon.com/bumper,get you a nice set of high quality earbudslike the Everyday E25.Let them know we sent you.(bell dings)(Jeremiah laughing)Now AMG makes some of thecoolest, most powerful Benzes, and Maybach is known for itsextreme luxury and comfort.A Brabus is a whole 'nother beastthat takes both of them to an extreme. So to understand exactly what Brabus doesto make these land rockets so fastwe first have to get to knowthe car it's based off of.The Mercedes Maybach S650,which for convenience sakewe'll just call the S650,is Maybach's top tier model. Now the S650, it's a ripper, and a lot of that creditgoes to the AMG M279,an incredible V12 bi-turbo engine. It's been around since 2002,that's 18 years. Now Mercedes has kept this engine simpleby using a single overhead cam setupand a three valve design. Now if we were to comparethis with another V12 engine, like the one in the LaFerrari, that has a similar size and set upbut it uses a dual overhead cam systemwhich doubles the amount of cam shaftsand also adds weight and sizeand it also makes timing alittle bit more difficult. Now the S650's engine also uses somethingcalled multi spark ignitionwhere the spark plug fires five timesfor every cylinder cycle. Now when a spark goes offinside the cylinder at low RPMsthere's a risk of themixture being too lean, which means that there'smore air than fuelin your air/fuel mixture. And because of thatone spark isn't enoughto burn that mixturebefore it gets pushed outduring the exhaust stroke, and that results in poor efficiency. So the AMG M279 firesoff five times per cyclewhich creates a larger flame kernel, which is the little burstof flames that happenat the tip of the spark plug. And that ensures that all ofthe fuel gets burned completelybefore the exhaust valve opens. Now this results in betterconsistency and efficiencyin each of those 12 cylinders.Okay, so all that's cool, Jerry Berry, but I came to learn about Brabus, you frog leg loving Tom DeLonge lookalikewith all the proportionsof Woody from "Toy Story"and eyebrows that bounced around,so what does Brabus even do?Brabus figured out a wayto make a mind-blowing 900 horsepowerand 1,160 foot pounds oftorque out of that AMG V12.That's a power increase of 279 horsepowerand 368 foot pounds of twist. So the only question Ihave is how'd they do it?So the first thing thatBrabus does to the engineis they strip it down to the studs, like completely down to the studs. The only part of the enginethat sticks around fromthe Mercedes factoryis the aluminum block, and even that gets a lotof changes done to it.Now Brabus takes the blockand increases the displacementfrom 6.3 liters up from six liters,by boring out each cylinder, shaving off layers of metal insideeach of those little, littlecompartments of combustion. That's what I'm calling a cylinder now, compartment of combustion. And when you bore out any cylinder, the machine creates a finecross hatched imperfectionon the surface of the bore. And these are essentialbecause it helps acylinder wall retain oilto assist with thepiston ring lubrication. Now theoretically, the idea is for there tobe a very thin layer of oilbetween the edge of the pistonrings and the cylinder wall, and what Brabus does is theycut down the cylinder wallto expose a specifically calibrated amountof silicon crystals on the wall, allowing for the optimal amount of oilto stay in between the siliconand the aluminum on the wallfor the absolute bestperformance possible. And Brabus actually usesa high powered microscopeto inspect each cylinder wallto make sure that it's been cross hatchedto the right specificationfrom their factory.Pretty freaking cool, man.Now along with the increase in volume,Brabus also manufacturers theiron crankshaft for the enginethat provides a longer strokefor the connecting rods insideeach of those cylinders. And when you have a longer strokeyou make more space forthat air/fuel mixture, which makes a bigger combustion. And this increase in strokagehas to be paired with a brand new setof precision Brabus internals. And boy, oh boy, do I mean precision.Brabus manufacturers all newinternals for the V12 engine, replacing the steel connecting rodswith forged aluminum rods. And not only that, they replaced the Mercedespistons with milled ones, which are cut down to save some weight.Brabus also uses theirown lighter weight valves, their camshafts, theirsprings, and injectors, all of which are specificallymade to accommodatethe increase in displacementand heat and power. Now the process ofreplacing stock internalsisn't special in its own right, but the process that Brabus usesfor assembling theinternals in this engineis really, really cool.So first once all 12 ofsets of connecting rodsand piston heads have been manufactured,Brabus weighs all ofthose pieces individuallydown to a 10th of a gram. Then Brabus pairs up aconnecting rod to a pistonand they weigh them to make surethat they have the exact same massas every other connectingrod/piston assembly, which ensures a trulyperfect engine balancein each of the two banks of six cylinders.Brabus then reassembles the engine by handbecause hey, they're greasyknuck boys too over there. But that is just the engine. But don't forget we've got two turbosthat need to get boltedback onto this bad boy.Now Brabus replacesthe AMG tuned turbochargersfrom the M279 enginewith their ownwhich increases the sizeof the compressor unitsand also increase thesize of the turbines.Which all that meansis it forces even moreair into the engine. Now with all of this added pressure, and you got your added airand you got your added displacement.there is a lot more heat beinggenerated in the engine bayand that needs to be managed.Brabus created their owncustom carbon fiber air intake moleculethat works in tandemwith a new front grill, and this directs more air tothe turbos more efficientlyand it also helps direct moreair into the cooling system.Brabus actually lines the entire outsideand bottom of the air intakemodule with gold, baby,so that it dissipatesthe most heat possible, much like another insane engineer'swet dream of a supercar, the McLaren F1.And we talked about thatin a couple of episodes back of "B2B".You should go watch it.And now Brabus uses their ownlightweight high strength manifolds, and in addition to the turbosand the forged and milled internals,it produces a super smooth, super fastzero to 60 time of 3.7 secondsand a top speed of 220 miles per hour.(engine revving)You already knew why they called it a 900.Now you know why they called it a rocket. And the crazy thing isthe engineers over at Brabusactually limited the power output. Now rumor has itthat they had already comeup with the 900 namesakeand it was just too much of apain in the butt to change it.So engineers were like,"Alright, guess we've gotto hit 900 horsepower."So let's just tune this thing down."Engineering mysteries on "B2B". (humming)Now the originaltransmission and drive train, suspension and brake systemare all carried over from the S650and remained unchanged on the Rocket 900,which is another testamentto the engineers over at Mercedes. These pieces are under alot more stress than usualand they hold up well enough to copewith a huge bump in power and speed. The only thing that Brabus has to tuneis something called magic body control, and that uses a radar systemto predictively adjustthe suspension setupfor bumps in the road thatthe car is about to run over, rather than adjusting asthe car runs over them.Predict what my buttis about to feel, car.Now this magic body controlcan even lean inward on a turnby up to 2.65 degrees tocompensate for body rollto make sure that the car staysflat through a bendy corner. Now all of this is controlled by a systemthat monitors road surface changes, your throttle input, your breaking input, and steering input to constantly adjustthe car's pitch, lean, and ride height. It takes Brabus up to eight weeksjust to tune the engine of the Rocket 900,and this doesn't even includethe rest the vehicle's bitslike the bodywork or the interior. Some Brabus tuned carscan take over a year just to complete. It just depends on what thecustomer wants in their car.And customers of Brabus can basicallypick and choose anymaterial, stitch patterns, colors, fits, and finishesfor the entire cardown to the most minute level. This is also why this car can costover half a million dollars.Heck, a set of tires forthis car costs over 20 grand! Now progress defines their craftsmanshipby passion over profit, and the rocket 900 is a perfectexample of that mindset. If you want to learn moreabout the people that makeother cars that Brabus makes, check out this episode of "Up To Speed".You want to know more about internalsand forged materials and how they do,how forged parts are betterthan cast parts or milled parts,go check out this episode of the Supra.Guys, we got freaking showsalmost every day here at Donut. So follow us, like, hit Subscribe, that helps us out a ton.Follow me on Instagram @jeremiahburton.Follow us on Donut @donutmedia.I'll see you next week, bye for now.(synthwave music)
