**Petrol Pen's Exclusive Look at the Mini I've Ever Driven But the Inside**
I have to say, this is one car that really gets my heart racing. It's not just the sleek design and powerful engine that caught my attention, but also the incredible history behind it. As you can see, the interior of this 1960s-era car is almost identical to its original form, making it a true time capsule. I'm told that Alec Paul built only four of these cars, and this one is just as impressive as they come.
**The Startup Procedure**
So, let's dive into the startup procedure for this incredible machine. It's actually quite straightforward once you get the hang of it. The process begins with a simple ignition switch, which I'm guessing requires some practice to master. Once the ignition is on, you need to push the starter button, which can take a bit longer than modern cars due to the older design. There's also an optional choke feature that's necessary for these vintage engines. I've never been much of a fan of this feature myself, but it's definitely useful for getting those old engines running smoothly.
**Instrumentation and Engine**
As you can see, the instrumentation on this car is remarkably similar to what was used back in the day. The engine itself is a beast, with a powerful setup that requires some serious effort to get moving. I've been told that these cars were built around 1991-1992, which explains the unique features and design elements. The fact that it's still got all its original parts makes it an absolute treasure trove for car enthusiasts.
**Racing History**
This car has a rich history in the racing scene, particularly in rally events. I've read that these cars were initially met with skepticism by drivers who had never seen anything like them before. However, once they got behind the wheel and experienced the thrill of driving one, it quickly became clear why they're so beloved. The sound of these engines is unmistakable, and the feel of steering through tight corners is still unmatched today.
**A Tour of the Controls**
Let's take a closer look at some of the controls on this car. As you can see, the floor-mounted handbrake is still in use, which might seem old-fashioned to modern drivers. However, it provides a level of control and finesse that's hard to match with more modern systems. The gearshift itself is also noteworthy, with its unique setup and lack of synchromesh gears. It's definitely an acquired taste, but one that rewards patience and skill.
**Steering and Brakes**
Now, let's talk about the steering and braking systems on this car. I've been told that these can be a bit challenging to get used to, particularly for taller drivers. However, once you adjust to the weight and feel of the steering wheel, it becomes surprisingly easy to navigate through tight corners and hairpin turns. The brakes, too, are a model of reliability, with a simple yet effective setup that gets the job done.
**Conclusion**
In conclusion, this car is an absolute joy to drive – both on and off the track. Its unique design elements and rich history make it a truly special machine, one that's sure to captivate even the most seasoned car enthusiasts. Whether you're a petrolhead or just looking for a fun driving experience, this car is definitely worth checking out.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys welcome to petrol ped now a few years ago I was invited by a good mate of mine Ellis to drive actually the predecessor to this car his Lancia Delta Integrale a rally car but today today he's invited me to come and take a look at this to drive this now if you think about Classic Mini Coopers road-going Mini Coopers you might well think instantly of the Italian Job but if you think about Mini Coopers and rally cars the first thing you think about is Patti hop Kurt paty Hopkirk finished third in the 1962 monte carlo rally in a sunbeam rapier however hop hurt was becoming frustrated by the radius lack of reliability he first competed in a mini at the 1963 monte carlo rally where he finished sick that season he also finished second on the tulip Valley SiC on the heirs severely edge and forth on the RAC rally alongside Henry Lydon he won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a mini cooper s car number 37 with the registration number 33 EJB there the most recent all British crew to have won the event he also led the BMC team to win with fellow mini drivers Timo mäkinen and rau no Alton and placing fourth and seventh the victory made Hopkirk a household name so as you can see some proper proper history just think when when rallying when this thing hit the rally scene people just didn't know what to make of it it was so small and tiny it absolutely blew everybody away winning the monte carlo rally and and and just cementing itself in automotive legendary history i often get asked the question if i were to have any classic car what would it be well there's a really simple answer to that is pop right in front of me a classic mini cooper s a road-going one would be great but i think a fully rally prepared car like this I just I just think it's magnificent you know me I'm a huge mini fan but there are many people who might say I'm a kind of modern mini fan and that's not really a mini at all interestingly when I did sixty minis then there was a combination of classic minis and modern minis as owners we we get on and we don't really have a problem with it but it somehow seems to be there kind of who's not really a mini this is a real mini I know it's a real mini look at it it's a thing of absolute beauty by far annoyed the easiest way for me to tell you the backstory to this car is to get Ellis in the car with me and gonna be I'm so lucky hunk aniket to drive the car and I still can't quite pinch myself to believe it so yeah well in a moment we'll get Ellis in the car we'll go for a drive up the road and talk a little bit more about it but wow it's just awesome I can just tell I'm gonna be stuck for words most of the day now I'm really struggling with which is my favorite view of this car the front or the rear let's start at the front because it's just fantastic it's it's just beautiful little things like this little leather strap here to hold the bonnet down this row of for Lucas driving lamps the dimensions of it is just so tiny and even that if you come round this side the tiniest thing these little 10-inch mini light wheels shod with Yokohama tires this is a fully rally prepared car this is as it was in period it's not been had a big turbocharger thrown on it or an unoriginal engine this car is totally totally original now the back of the car is just as cool as the front the tell-tale sign that this is an original Cooper S is it's got the two fuel filler caps either side central exhaust just awesome awesome thing love this spot bumpers off very cool but look I mean I'm I'm quite a big guy but I feel like a giant stood next to this car but let's jump inside because the inside is very very cool indeed oh now then they don't call these minis for nothing they are so we will find out far more about this from Alex very shortly but the interior this thing it is absolutely as original as the hot cup mini would have been when paddy was was rallying them back in the day all of the instruments you've got the little rev counter here you got the speedo in the middle and it kind of talks about the fact this of one of four works replicas there were four made this is the only left hand drive one and then you've even got things like the kind of time and all the stuff that was needed by the copilot just on this side full roll cage is just a magnificent thing yes honestly when I get experienced cars like this haven't even driven it yet and I'm getting quite emotional but this is you know this is exactly how the car would have been back in period when it was being rallied by Pattie hot cook it is stunning in here in every way it's just magnificent Wow these seats are quite tight as well but yeah so we're gonna get to drive the cart and got a full speed box very very close ratio gears apparently and just as it would have been back in the day what a thing now I reckon the next thing is we're gonna find Ellis we'd get some cameras set up in the car and we take this for a spin because I for one cannot wait to get reviving this magnificent car but it's just full of history these little pockets here with pens in them and timers and stuff Oh Ryan guys you may we'll remember that gentlemen SATs am i right Ellis welcome back to the channel mate it's been a while yeah this morning it's part of a good company isn't it I reckon so I'll put links and the time I drove Ellis's rally car but this video is all about this car right where do we start with this so we've not it about four or five months yeah and haven't really done anything with it and this is probably the second time I've been in it so I've never sat in this seat so yeah so first thing they it's quite tight yeah Wow so this is only the second Classic Mini I've ever driven but the inside so this is to talk to us about the car because this is exactly how it was in period it is this is a near as you can get to a the original paddy hot crack in car yeah this was put together along with three other so this is one of four that was built by Alec Paul and it's as a near - it could be all of the instrumentation the engine everything is as it was someone must've made this was these were built around 91 92 right okay Wow what I think so I'm guessing startup procedures shuts down and plucks down ignition on there and then push the starter you need longer arms I need longer arms so twin tanks yeah there was the pump switch over there oh yeah you might want a little bit of choke choke so for my younger viewers yeah choke is something used to have to pull out whenever you started a car in the olden days a little bit me neither and where's to start the start after certain I push the starter there it's got a floor handbrake right you know that is yes but run me through it for my viewers well it's it's for the benefit of handbrake turns and everything else yeah lift it up no person to the button yeah and it's off yeah and to put it back on lift it up so once in Reverse so just that's it we're kids in gear any guy here you go so this has got strength cut gears and quite limits live definite so he's ceramic are 112 like their Lord we broke up okay oh you can hear those kids straight no pushing in at all it just sounds like it's about to run out never again knightly doesn't at all there's a to big chance but it's just gonna break the steering me steer is Marshall rack against you ever you know I I did the iris 2000 recently and the response back off I guess the people of our generation that just didn't just the colonies I mean they seized all of the history - it's even more smashing analog nature of the old cars you know them gearson driver aids and just had the noise that they made I'm gonna stay out of the trailer and freedom young man I must have been less insane nice have you taken the console mentally the provenance of this comb is incredible you see the sameness this is a left-hand drive one in Europe he's owned by another chap who he uses mmm when I read up about this that they say that you know you need to do a few miles to sort of get the feel of it ya know because it doesn't quite you get into them - no sure the webcam - perhaps whether we're in the red line is No it's on at the moment of duty by here yep or a fireman these older engines is where your ear thinks you should change him he's normally probably only about halfway surname May as he can but the steering is just so light and our teammates for me as a tall chap there those have been challenging to drive because when these are of the mire of Pittsburgh noise that's why negan is beautiful I have to say thank you I always say this I said it last summer drove your other car to be able to share this experience of these because you see these Gaza in museum turn things began to
