It's March 20th, 2020: A Day of Celebration and Social Distancing

March 20th, 2020, marks my eighth day of quarantine. I'm Justine, and today is also my birthday. As I sit here with my dog Matty by my side, I'm reminded that even in the midst of isolation, there are still things to be celebrated. My rhyming was unintentional, but I'm embracing this moment with a touch of drama.

As Los Angeles has shut down, we're allowed to go for walks outside as long as we maintain a safe distance of six feet from others. Social distancing is the new norm, and I'm doing my part by respecting this guideline. With the somber electronic music playing in the background, I want to acknowledge that this is not what I'd normally be doing on my birthday. However, I'm determined to make the most of this unusual situation.

At 5:30 AM, I'm making some coffee and getting ready for a new day. One of the things I need to celebrate today, aside from my birthday, is the release of Animal Crossing. I got up super early because there's a video that was due to be posted around 5:30 AM, and I haven't finished editing it yet. Unfortunately, my audience can't see this behind-the-scenes content just yet, as it's still in progress.

I'm using my iPhone to shoot this vlog, and I'm experimenting with different techniques to capture the mood and atmosphere of my quarantine experience. The goal is to create a moody and dramatic video that showcases how I'm feeling – strange, weird, and off-balance. It's completely valid to feel this way right now, and I hope that by sharing my emotions, others will know they're not alone.

Working with my friend Tyler, who usually shoots and edits my videos for me, got a head start on this edit last night. While he was working on the footage, I started playing Animal Crossing because it officially came out last night – March 19th. Today is March 20th, so Tyler sent me the XML file of the edited footage, which I've now imported onto my computer.

With the music and color correction in place, I'm starting to bring this edit together. It's probably going to take a few hours until Matty decides he's ready for a walk – that will be when we step outside for our socially distanced stroll. The weirdest thing about going outside right now is that it feels wrong.

As I prepare to head out, I want to make sure Matty knows that this leash is about six feet long, which means we have to keep that distance from others. He seems to be listening, but also wondering if he's missing anything by not being able to interact with the world around him.

Matty and I are now enjoying our walk, taking in the sights and sounds of the quiet neighborhood. The whimsical music plays softly in the background as we chat about everything from food (breakfast is made!) to upcoming collaborations – including a video partnership with Brava, my favorite oven brand.

The editing process will continue later, but for now, I'm savoring this moment with Matty and embracing the unusual nature of our social distancing routine.
