The Evolution of iPhones: A History of Innovation and Disappointment
Apple's iPhone series has come a long way since its release in 2007. The first generation of iPhones was met with significant hype, and it quickly became one of the most popular smartphones on the market. However, Apple had been updating their Flagship iPhone models, and the lower-cost SE continued to see steady sales.
In 2018, Apple released the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, which featured a new xdr display with improved contrast ratio and a camera array that included three lenses. The devices also came equipped with Optical image stabilization, multi-camera recording, deep fusion, and night mode. Additionally, the new Midnight green color option was introduced, along with a frosted glass back and a centered Apple logo.
The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max were highly successful, but Apple had been updating their Flagship iPhone models. In 2020, Apple released the iPhone SE, which featured the same A13 Bionic chip as the standard iPhone 8 but in a completely new design. The device was essentially an iPhone 8 with a new design and a lower price point of $399.
However, the success of the iPhone SE came at the expense of another iPhone model. The iPhone 11 mini, which was announced first, featured many premium features like the A14 Bionic chip, aluminum design, and Magsafe charging. Despite its compact size, the device had a larger price point than expected, starting at $699.
The iPhone 11 mini sales were disappointing, with Apple dramatically slowing down production just two months after its release. The standard iPhone 12 was well-received, despite a $100 price increase over last year's model. However, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max received an improved telephoto lens with two-and-a-half times optical zoom, as well as the ability to record Apple Pro raw video and use a lidar scanner for augmented reality applications.
In Fall 2020, Apple announced that it would be removing the EarPods and power adapter from iPhone boxes, citing environmental concerns. However, many speculated that the primary reason was cost savings. The following year, in 2021, many expected the Mini model to be discontinued due to poor sales. However, Apple had already prepared its production two years ahead of time and continued with the 13 mini.
The 13 mini featured an improved display and a 15 Bionic chip. It also came equipped with cinematic mode video recording, one-and-a-half hours of extra battery life, and a new photographic style feature. Despite these improvements, the device continued to sell poorly. The iPhone 13 had similar features, along with a larger 6.1-inch display, while the 13 Pro and Pro Max received more substantial features like a 120Hz ProMotion display.
In 2022, Apple finally discontinued the mini model and instead opted for models with a focus on larger displays. The entry-level iPhone 14 was priced at $799 and featured a 6.1-inch display, emergency SOS via satellite, crash detection, improved low-light photos, and action mode stabilization. The new 14 Plus had a 6.7-inch display and the longest battery life ever in an iPhone.
However, it was the Pro models that received significant upgrades. Apple introduced the dynamic Island, similar to the hole-punch bezels found on Android devices. However, Apple's version had a secret weapon – the software built around the new island gave it unexpected functionality. The Island could move like a liquid and expand, contract, separate, and even show color-coded alerts when the microphone or camera was active.
The Pro Models also came equipped with an always-on display that allowed users to see the time and notifications without having to wake up their device. This feature led many to purchase the 14 Pro or Pro Max over the entry-level 14 and 14 Plus. Apple even referred to sales of the 14 and 14 Plus as unexpectedly low, leading some to speculate that production may be slowed down sooner than planned.
As of now, the iPhone series continues to evolve with new features and designs being introduced regularly. From its humble beginnings to the latest flagship models, the iPhone has remained one of the most popular smartphones on the market.
