AMD's New WRAITH Cooler VS. Old Stock Cooler
The New Wraith Cooler: A Game-Changer for AMD Systems
In recent years, AMD has been stuck with the same old stock coolers that run hotter than a kidney garage sale and have an acoustic profile that could rival a buzzsaw. It's no wonder that folks are eager to see what the new Wraith cooler brings to the table.
The first thing I noticed about the Wraith cooler is that it's huge - AMD hasn't compensated this much since the R9 295x. The size may not always reflect performance, but it's undeniable that seeing a big piece of hardware in my hands just makes me want to mount it. This is also the sexiest stock cooler I've seen to date, with a matte black fan shroud that supports a modern design and even a white LED on the side. The unit features a new 92mm fan, a record high for stock coolers, as well as an sleeved three-pin cable. What's more, it has a fairly dense heat system sink and four copper heat pipes to pull heat away from the wide copper base plate, offering a cooling capacity up to 125 watt TDPs.
The Wraith cooler also features the same retention mounting mechanism as seen on past AMD stock coolers, which may elicit praise or pitchforks depending on who you ask. In my case, it was a breeze to mount - being the stud I am, I didn't even need to take long to get the unit in place. However, there is one notable exception to the ease of installation: the Wraith cooler's RAM clearance upon installation. I was shocked to see that the cooler was feeling up my memory in what was clearly a non-consensual act. Usually, I like to watch, but the force was just a little too aggressive for my taste. To avoid potential damage, I removed the stick.
While low-profile designs could have avoided the issue, it's still strange to see a stock cooler that's not 100% compatible with other parts - it's like having a pair of one-size-fits-all shoes but no feet, literally. However, I'm pretty impressed with the Wraith cooler at this point, and like all hardware, performance is above all else.
To get a better understanding of how well the Wraith cooler performs, I fired up my 95-watt TDP 7890k when gaming, along with our other stock coolers. Surprisingly, the new unit shot up to an alarming 101°C, while the basic cooler reached 97°C. However, even at these temperatures, the system didn't auto shut down or blow up in my face - a testament to the Wraith cooler's capabilities.
In addition to its impressive cooling performance, the Wraith cooler also boasts the quietest profile of the three. In fact, despite the minor clearance issues with small-form-factor motherboards, it keeps its promise of a cooler, quieter solution to AMD system builders and scores some style points for having a premium aftermarket appearance - something that's been missing from stock coolers for far too long.
The bar has been raised for what a stock cooler should be, and Intel could take a page out of their competitor's book on making a stock cooler that offers more than just the bare minimum. Overall, the new Wraith cooler is an exciting development in the world of AMD hardware, offering both performance and style in one convenient package.
In conclusion, I'm excited to see how this cooler performs in real-world applications, especially when overclocking. The Wraith cooler has set a new standard for stock coolers, and I'm eager to see where it takes AMD's system builders in the future.
