How to Fix Stopped Android Apps, Change Permissions & Set Defaults

Resetting Your Phone's Settings: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're experiencing issues with your phone's performance, such as apps forcing close or poor battery life, resetting your settings can help resolve the problem. To do this, follow these steps:

First, go to your phone's home screen and select the "Clear data" option on any app that may be causing issues. Then, select "Delete" to clear all data from the app. This will remove any temporary files or cache that may be taking up space on your phone.

Next, navigate to the Settings menu on your phone. In this section, you can find various options for customizing your phone's behavior and appearance. To access these settings, go to "General Management" and then select "Reset." From here, you can choose between "Reset Settings" or "Factory Data Reset."

**Resetting Settings**

If you need to reset your phone's settings but don't want to delete all of your data, selecting the "Reset Settings" option is a good alternative. This will remove any customizations you've made to your phone's settings, allowing you to start from scratch.

However, be careful when using this option, as it can also erase certain data that may be important to you. Make sure to back up any essential information before selecting "Reset Settings."

**Using the Always-On Display**

The always-on display feature on some phones allows you to see basic information, such as time and date, even when your phone is locked. To enable this feature, follow these steps:

First, go to your phone's home screen and select the "Always-On Display" option from the Settings menu.

Next, select the schedule for when you want the always-on display to turn on and off. You can choose to have it turn on at a specific time or set it to always show.

If you're new to using the always-on display, don't worry! The phone will walk you through the setup process by double-tapping on the screen.

**Accessing App Permissions**

When installing new apps on your phone, you may be asked for permission to access certain features, such as your contacts. To manage app permissions, follow these steps:

First, go to the Settings menu on your phone and select "App Permissions."

Next, review the list of apps that have been granted permission to access your data.

If an app is requesting permission to access your contacts, you may want to deny access unless it's necessary for functionality. You can also use this feature to manage permissions for other types of data, such as location or camera access.

**Default Apps**

Some phones allow you to set default apps for certain features, such as the web browser or messaging app. To change a default app on your phone, follow these steps:

First, go to the Settings menu on your phone and select "Browser App" (or whatever app you want to change).

Next, tap the "Choose default" option to select a new default app.

You can choose from a list of pre-installed apps or install a new app to use as the default. This feature allows you to easily switch between different apps for various tasks.

**Additional Tips**

If you're experiencing issues with your phone's performance, there are several other troubleshooting tips you can try:

* Disable and re-enable any apps that may be causing issues.

* Clear cache and data from apps that take up a lot of space on your phone.

* Check app permissions to ensure they're not accessing more data than necessary.

By following these steps and using the features mentioned in this article, you should be able to reset your phone's settings and resolve common issues with performance.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enin today's video I'm gonna show you how you can fix an app that has force closed or an app that is not working properly on your Android phone let's get started everybody welcome to tech with Bret where I help tech work for you so if you have an Android phone you may have seen a pop up on your screen where it says unfortunately a certain app has stopped now there may be a few ways to fix that or you may have an app where just inside the phone itself it's not working properly so I'm going to show you how you can kind of reset the app and clear it out so the first thing let's say we have this Android fi that is not currently working properly so the first thing that you would want to do is actually uninstall the application so if I long press here on the home screen it pops up this option to quickly uninstall the other way that you could do it is you could actually just go into the Play Store search for that application and then here you have that uninstall option as well another way to reset the app without having to uninstall and reinstall it is you go into the settings of the phone so we're going to go into the settings and we're gonna go down and find the apps section right here so this is going to show you all the applications that you have installed on your phone whether you install them or their default applications on your phone so let's go down here and there we can see the Android Fi and we do have the option in here where we couldn't uninstall it here we can force stop it so that just stops it from running in the background but you do have this storage option right here so if you go into storage and you select clear data that will actually take this app back to default settings like you have never used the app before so let me show you what I mean so right now if I'm in the Android FI app there is this little character that I have created and I could play with him but if I go back into the settings here select clear data delete that's going to delete all the information that the phone has stored in the application so now if we go back into the Android Fi application it's just like I'm going into the app for the very first time so if I had any accounts or anything set up in there it has reset them and that information is no longer there I'd have to resign in or whatever but now if it was having an issue before it is now working properly so let's say you have an application that you didn't install and there's no way to uninstall it like the gallery app or maybe Bixby or something like that if you go back into the settings and you go into the apps you can find some of those applications in here so if we go down into the Samsung section so here you can see Samsung experience home so this is actually what your home screen is stored under so if you want to completely erase your layout here I don't want to do that because I have everything all set up but if I wanted to erase that I would go into the Samsung experience home go to storage and select clear data and it will take it back to its default setting now if part of your phone is having an issue but it does not show up in this app list one of the things that you can do is select the menu up here and go and select show system applications so this will actually show more of the hidden things that your phone can do so if we go to the top of the list here we can see the aasa' service was added adapt sound was added so you could go into here and some of them you could disable I would be careful in what you disabled because part of your phone may stop working and it wouldn't work properly if you disable that so you would have to go through and find which ones really just don't play with this menu too much but it's just defined and diagnose what part of your phone is not working properly so now let's go into one of these applications that isn't something that you can uninstall and reinstall so here we have always-on display if I go into the settings here we again have the four stop we have all those other settings but right here under storage again we're gonna go to clear data or clear cache clearing the cache will clear out any temporary files it has stalled so right here we can see the cache is 111 kilobytes so it's not going to delete any of the files stored in the app unless for some reason the app stores them in the cache so this application even though there's no issue with it I do want to show you that if you clear the data it will take it back again to fat to reset so I'm going to select clear data on this and select delete so now let's go into our always-on display settings so we're going to go into the phone and we are going to go into the lock screen and here we have the always-on display settings so it's gone back to default where it's actually set up for a certain time so I'm going to change that schedule and I'm going to select always show so now if we lock this now it's showing the always-on display and right here it says double tap to learn how to use always-on display so we can double tap that and we can go through just like we got the phone and it's set up for the first time so we just double tap on these to get through the always-on the splay menu and now it has taken us back now if there is a setting where it is just not working properly one of the things that you can do is go into the settings of the phone and we're gonna go down here under general management and right here you have reset and then here you have reset settings so here it's actually going to change any customizations that you've made maybe you can't figure out how to turn something back to default you can come in here select reset settings and it will reset the settings of the phone it's not going to delete any pictures or any content but that will do the reset settings down here this is the one you want to be careful of that will actually reset your entire phone now a few other things I want to show you in the apps menu is in here let's say I do disable an application and I want to find it to re-enable it if I select the all apps drop-down right here I can go to enabled apps or disabled apps so here I currently have no applications disabled on the phone and then a few other things let's say we go into the settings here and we want to uninstall certain apps that are taking up a lot of space here we can select sort by size and here we can see the app that takes up the most space is fortnight at two and a half gig and you can scroll through and delete any apps that are taking up a lot of space now if an app is taking up a lot of space like here I have Dropbox that's taking up quite a bit one gigabyte but really there's not much stored in Dropbox that's just because it has a of cash so here again back to the cash 279 meg so I would just click clear cache and it remove those temporary files and then I still am logged in to the app and I don't have to Reese I nin so that will just delete anything that's temporarily on the phone now whenever you open a new application you'll always see the button that asks if you allow permission for the application to access your contacts and then you get the button that says allow or deny well if you go into the menu here here you have app permissions so every application requires you to accept the permission so your contacts need to view the contacts so that's why it has access to permissions but if you download a flashlight app and it wants to know your contacts you most likely want to deny access to that so here you can check what applications actually have permissions to your contacts so here allô is a messaging app I want it to know my contacts so that I can call or contact other people and so some of these applications maybe if you're sharing content it will need to know your contacts but that's about it so you can go through and check out all your permissions there and then we also have what is called default apps so let's say when you ever go into the web browser you want it to use Chrome so right here we go to browser app and it's selected on Chrome if you wanted to change that to Samsung Internet you would just tap right there and now it's going to change to Samsung Internet and then here we have calling app messaging app tap and pay so I showed you Samsung pay before here you could choose Google pay or Samsung pay here we have the home screen right now I only have one launcher installed and then here we have a few other settings where we can have it ask us before it set the default app or we can just have it automatically set the default app that it chooses and then here we have set as default so we can see what apps are set as default and go through and adjust those based on that information so there you go that's a pretty quick video on how you can fix an app that's forced closing or how to reset it to its factory default settings now if you'd like to see any more troubleshooting tips make you select my playlist over there on the side if you have any further questions please let me know in the comments below thank you guys so much for watching I'll see you
