How to Install a Spacer to Fix a Leaking Toilet Bowl

Adding a Spacer to Your Closet Flange: A Step-by-Step Guide

Everybody that's Jeff with home repair tutor and today I'm going to show you how to add a spacer to your closet flange once the old wax ring is removed from the closet flange. You can add a new 1/2 inch closet flange spacer this will raise the height of any closet flange that sits below your bathroom floor.

The space where I'm using is about 1/2 inch thick and I'm adding the spacer in order to raise the height of the closet flange about 1/4 inch above the wood floor. The wax ring will compress too much of the closet flange is below the bathroom floor and over time a leak will develop because of this poor seal.

So you need to put a bead of silicone caulk on the existing closet flange on waste pipe and I chose to use To have 3.0 because it's 100% waterproof is water-resistant in 30 minutes and contains Microban which prevents mold growth which is totally awesome for any kind of toilet use. Place a nice generous quarter inch bead of caulk on top of the closet flange and waste pipe again be generous with this because it's going to create a seal between the old closet flange and the new spacer that you're using to raise the height of the closet flange.

You want to line up the slots on the spacer with the slots on the old closet flange on the floor. You will create a sandwich with the old flange and a spacer. Make sure the slots on the white spacer line up with the marks on the blue painters tape this is super important because you want the bolts to line up with the marks when they're inserted into the spacer.

Take this opportunity trust me on this one take this opportunity to use a new closet flange nut and bolt the old one could be corroded could you know break off it could create all sorts of problems. So insert the bolt down into the closet flange the old closet flange and rest the washer and nut on top of the white spacer.

You want the bolt to go down into the original closet flange because when the nut for the bolt is tightened it will sandwich the white spacer in the old flange together with this creates a great watertight seal which is exactly what you need. And then what you want to do is let the new flange spacers sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes to allow the caulk to cure.

Okay then you can put the new wax ring on top of the white spacer and install your toilet so I hope this was beneficial to you. I hope it helped out. You can always find more tips and tricks on toilets and other things related to your home at homerepairtutor.com. So take care have a great day
