Running Chromium OS on the Raspberry Pi 3: A Personal Experiment
Hey what's going on guys, it's ETA Prime back here again and today I am running Chromium OS on the Raspberry Pi 3. Now this is at stock clocks, this is a Chromium OS build that I found online. I will leave a link in the description if you want to try it out yourself.
I have used a Chromebook in the past for about a week and it just wasn't for me, but if you like Chromium OS, you can run it on your Raspberry Pi. So let's go ahead and see what this thing does. I'm going to go here to YouTube and I'm just going to see if we can play some videos here and I'm just gonna once RIE this okay, oh so this is already set up an HD. Let's go ahead and bring it down if it will let us, yeah I believe 1080p 60 frames is just going to be way too much. So I'm going to try 480p now.
This is a very, very early build of the Chromium OS for the Raspberry Pi. It's not done by Google itself, so I'll leave a link in the description if you want to try it out yourself and I have the sound roller and I'm going to go ahead and eggs okay, so obviously you can play YouTube videos here. So I'm going to benchmark this thing just a browser benchmark. I'll run two different ones now, this is SunSpider. I don't believe it's under development anymore they're using Jetstream now but I have used this on every device I've ever owned so I have a baseline of what a device should run.
So I'm going to go ahead and fast forward this for you here 1865 not a really good score, lowers better on this test to put it in perspective my i7 desktop runs around 130 to 160 milliseconds and this is 1865, so it's a pretty high score but I mean Chromium OS is working and it's installable on the Raspberry Pi 3. And this is just a little arm unit with a 1.2 gigahertz quad-core chip in it. It's pretty amazing that somebody got this to run now.
I think there is a web store for Chrome OS, and I had a few games installed on the Chromebook I was using, I'm not sure how to access them so let's go ahead and see if we can run a game real quick and I'll find something here. Okay, I know of a game, Don't kill me guys Sweet still installed runs offline compatible with my device. So I'm going to go ahead and launch the app. Oh yeah, he's sad because my computer is running slow so super early phases here of the Chromium OS on the Raspberry Pi.
Let's do one more benchmark and that is Octane, guys, I'm using a keyboard that's supposed to light up but I can't see the keys on it, I'm just having a hard time here. About the same score as the Raspberry Pi 3 on raspbian, I did run a few benchmarks on that. So if you just want to browse the web this is a great little OS if you know more about it and you know what you can and can't do go ahead and give it a try or leave me a comment in the description or in the comment section below and let me know what I can do with Chrome OS.
And if you want to see any more done with the chromium OS on the Raspberry Pi 3 just let me know, you can send me a private message or leave a comment so I don't know. But if you guys want to go ahead and give it a try there's a link in the description on where to get the image from, and I am going to make a video on how to install it on the SD card. So really appreciate you guys watching if you could hit that like button and subscribe thanks
