HOW TO READ THE SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES (updated).

**The Shadowhunter Chronicles: A Guide to Reading Order**

Honestly, you could skip Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy altogether if you'd like, but then going into leading Midnight, you're just gonna sort out things as fact and you won't be able to share in the excitement of all of these references. Ghosts at the Shadow Market is very much the same because these novellas were published before the release of Queen of Errand. Is there a ton of information and foreshadowing that allows you to create some really cool connections and theories going into Queen, but it's absolutely not necessary for you to read Goes to the Shadow Market before you could totally read it after I get a lot of people who always ask me if they have to read any of the novella bind ups altogether. Truthfully, you really don't all of the necessary information is revealed in the main series, but if you're looking for the most context, the best reading experience I would HIGHLY commend them because there's a lot of great stories in there.

My fourth suggestion has to do with Red Scrolls of Magic. Now since Red Scrolls came out, it has been confusing the heck out of readers like every single day I get asked to make this updated video because none of y'all know when to read it and I literally don't blame you timeline wise, Red Scrolls takes place during the events of City of Fallen Angels so ideally you could read it after City of Glass because everything that occurs in this book happens before the rest of TMI or TBA. That being said, there are some references to the Dark Artifices in Red Scrolls, so you may want to wait until you finished Queen of Arrow Darkness in order to dive into this new trilogy and personally, I found that there is a plot twist initially revealed in City of Heavenly Fire that's referenced pretty casually in Red Scrolls. I know that's not gonna make sense to any of you because Red Scrolls does happen before City of Heavenly Fire but just trust me on it.

Now you may not feel spoiled while reading Red Scrolls because like, you don't know what I'm talking about right now but when you do eventually read City of Heavenly Fire that plot twist is not going to be as impactful for you because you've already known about it. I feel like because Red Scrolls is sort of like a spin-off series and each installment in this trilogy is going to take place at a different point in time throughout the Shadowhunter Chronicles, I feel like it is the most subjective as to when you can choose to read it but my personal recommendation would be to start Red Scrolls after finishing City of Heavenly Fire.

The last two books related to the Shadowhunter Chronicles that I haven't mentioned yet are the Shadowhunter Codex and an Illustrated History of Notable Shadow Hunters, and In Essence of Down World. The codex is basically a guidebook to shadow hunting acting as a sort of encyclopedia, it's information on all of the Shadowhunter history their traditions and customs, and more information about the other magical figures you encounter in the Shadow Underworld. Notable Shadow Hunters isn't a story per se but a collection of character profiles detailing information about all of the characters from the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles as well as these gorgeous illustrated portraits of them inspired by flowers.

To make it easy on you, you can really read these books whenever you'd like to or you don't have to read them at all. These are more like novelty books if you want some extra reading on the Shadowhunter world but they don't pertain to any of the plot so you can kind of read them whenever though I would recommend you have some sort of knowledge of the Shadowhunter world going into. This concludes a video on how to read the Shadowhunter Chronicles, and I'm sure I've left a lot of you thinking, "This video was unnecessarily long to be discussing reading orders," and you'd be correct but I don't know what else you would expect for me when it comes to the Shadowhunter books.

In fact, I discovered in the Mortal Instruments series about nine months before the final book came out so I proceeded to read the first five books in this series five times over and over and over again before I finally read all of the Infernal Devices series and from there on out I've been reading in publication order tactically, definitely not the most traditional method in the comments below, I would love to know if you are a fan of the Shadowhunter Chronicles and if so what order did you initially read them in if you are first starting out on your shadow hunter journey, I really hope I've given you some information on the structure of this world and maybe some suggestions on how you can best read them but that is it for this video, thank you guys so much for watching and I'll see you soon for a new one bye

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what's up hello my name is Emma and today I'm going to be doing an updated video on how to read the shadow under gronkle's by Cassandra Clare you've probably clicked on this video for one of two reasons either you watch all of my videos which in that case what's up welcome back or you were interested in a reading the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare but you don't know where to start that's where I'm here to help these Shadowhunter Chronicles is a collection of young adult fantasy series written by Cassandra Clare following a race of demon hunters throughout history at the present moment there are three completed series three novella or short story bind ups and three more confirmed series to be published in the next decade or so no wonder why you're confused with so many different story lines and books it can be incredibly unclear where to start so today I'm going to be giving you guys a few suggestions for different orders in which you can read these books tell you the pros and cons of each of them and hopefully give you some suggestions so that you don't spoil yourself for future books now let me be clear there is absolutely no right way to read these books if you feel you accidentally started reading the Shadowhunter chronicles with the wrong book you are fine I promise you these are my suggestions as someone who has read each of these series like three to nine times each and hopefully using that knowledge to give you guys the best possible reading experience for those of you who are totally new to the Shadowhunter world and know nothing about it I do want to describe these five or six series and explain what they are and when they take place but if you already know all that and want to skip to the reading orders you can go to this time stamp the Mortal Instruments is the OG shadow hunter series it takes place in New York 2007 and it follows a girl named Clary Fray whose mother has gone missing and that leads her to discover that she is a part of a supernatural race of demon hunters the Infernal Devices is the second series which serves as a prequel to The Mortal Instruments set in Victorian London 1878 it follows a girl named Tessa Grey who is roped into the world of shadow hunting when she is kidnapped right off the boat to London the Infernal Devices is the third shadow hunter series set in Los Angeles 2012 taking place after the events of The Mortal Instruments our main character is a shadow hunter named Emma Carstairs who was plagued by the unsolved murder of her parents but in the first time in five years she is finally found a lead the last hours is the fourth Shadowhunter series which is a sequel to the Infernal Devices set in 1903 it follows the children of the protagonists of tid as they are quarantined in London with an infestation of demons that seems impossible to kill and the first book in this series chain of gold is set to be published in March of 2020 and the conclusion to the epic Shadowhunter saga will be the wicked powers as a sequel to the dark artifices series the wicked powers will follow generations of shadow hunters set in 2015 as they face their greatest threat ever at the present time this series is set to begin in 2022 then we have one what I would consider to be a spin-off series which is the eldest curses book one which is the road scrolls of magic was just recently published and it takes place during the events of the Mortal Instruments series it follows Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane as they are on vacation in Europe when suddenly Magnus is accused of founding a demon cult that he doesn't remember and finally we have three novella collections the bane Chronicles which follows the Warlock Magnus Bane through the various years of his immortal life tales from the Shadowhunter Academy which tells the story of a character who begins to ascend to become a shadow hunter for the very first time and goes to the shadow market an assortment of stories that take place at the magical Downworld marketplace through the eyes of a silent brother named brother Zechariah and this is set to come out June of 2019 now that we know a little bit more about the books let's talk about the different ways that you can read them I would consider the most superior way of reading the Shadowhunter Chronicles to be the original publication order especially considering that's the way Cassy clear herself recommends you read the books publication order would be City of Bones city of ashes city of glass Clockwork Angel City of Fallen Angels clockwork Prince city of lost souls clockwork princess the bane Chronicles city of heavenly fire tales from the shadow under academy lady midnight Lord Of Shadows ghost of the shadow market queen of arendelle the retros of magic and chain of gold onward as a note when it comes to the novella by nubs they all have an ebook publication date and a physical publication date so for the sake of this video I'm going with the eBook date just because they technically came out first we're gonna have a whole talk about novellas at the end of this video so don't worry you've got a special experience with this reading order because you are experiencing this story in the exact way that it was written this also means that despite all the crossovers between series you will never find out about a past event or a future event before you are intended to so it is definitely the safest bet to avoid spoilers and honestly no matter when you start it we have like eight years left of books to go through so you're eventually gonna be reading them in publication order anyways the downside to publication order is that you are constantly switching between series so some of you might not want to do that in order to best retain the information or if you just prefer to marathon a series in one go but personally I reread the entire shadow under Chronicles in 2018 for the first time in publication order and it was a truly wonderful experience so I'm super happy I read it this way at least once for those of you who really do like to immerse yourself in a series marathon I have two suggestions for ways that you can sort of complete a series before you have to jump into the next one if you are unaware the Mortal Instruments series was initially supposed to be a trilogy so you can sort of consider the first three books to be one trilogy and the last three books to be another this reading order would be City of Bones city of ashes city of glass Clockwork Angel clockwork Prince and clockwork princess City of Fallen Angels city of lost souls city of heavenly fire the bane Chronicles and tales from the Shadowhunter Academy lady midnight Lord Of Shadows queen of errand on us the red Scrolls of magic and ghosts of the shadow market and then chain of gold and the following publication order I think this is a great method because you are starting off with the first introduction to the Shadowhunter world which has the most world building and set up but you are still able to feel like you're fully immersed in the story and reading a ton of content at one time before switching to something else now I like to call this third reading order I really want to try the Shadowhunter books but I don't think I'd like the Mortal Instruments and I feel like probably wouldn't get past City of Bones I have encountered a ton of people that want to get into the Shadowhunter books but they just have no interest whatsoever in the Mortal Instruments series and they don't want to have to force themselves through a six book series they have no desire of reading in order to get to the other ones so in order to do that you basically just need to follow the previous method but you would start by finishing all of the Infernal Devices and then going on to the Mortal Instruments if you so choose to so that reading order would be Clockwork Angel clockwork Prince clockwork princess City of Bones city of ashes city of glass City of Fallen Angels city of lost souls city of heavenly fire the bane Chronicles Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy lady midnight Lord Of Shadows queen of erendor kiss the red Scrolls and magic ghost of the shadow market and chain of gold so on if you happen to be watching this video in like 2024 you could totally read all of you last hours before diving into the Mortal Instruments but for those of us basic folk stuck in 2019 we actually have to wait for the books to be written first this is a great reading order because you are able to marathon each series while totally avoiding any spoilers because you're reading them chronologically through history the small downside is that because the Mortal Instruments was written before the Infernal Devices Cassie has included some little references and connections that you won't understand unless you have some knowledge of the Mortal Instruments series but if Victorian London is more your cup of tea you can absolutely start with the Infernal Devices and decide what other Shadowhunter books you want to read from there so those are the three main reading orders I would recommend using if you were interested in starting the Shadowhunter Chronicles whether you decide on an order that I mentioned or you come up with something entirely your own because there are absolutely so many more ways to read these books I do have a few last suggestions that are very general and I think could help you really have the best possible reading experience with all of these amazing books the first suggestion is to read all of the Infernal Devices series before finishing the last book in the Mortal Instruments series many China wonder fans will give you the suggestion because part of city of heavenly fire is directly tied to the ending of work princess and while you totally can finish the Mortal Instruments without even reading tid it's highly recommended that you read this first in order to fully appreciate the significance funny enough I've actually seen Cassie Claire recommend the second best way to read the Shadowhunter Chronicles as starting with all of TMI and then reading tid but in my experience most fans disagree with that and say you should finish the Infernal Devices first my second recommendation is to read all of the Mortal Instruments series before starting the dark artifices I get asked all the time if you can start reading the Shadowhunter Chronicles with Lady midnight and the answer is yes no one is stopping you but the foundations of the dark artifices are built upon the ending of the Mortal Instruments and if you decide to skip them you'll be missing a ton of crucial contacts that'll probably make her a very confusing grainy experience my third suggestion is to read tales from the Shadowhunter Academy after city of heavenly fire but before at Leedy midnight listen if you have not finished city of heavenly fire just the synopsis of tales from the Shadowhunter Academy will most definitely spoil you like I don't have many strict rules here that you absolutely have to follow but you should not even be considering reading shadow under Academy until you've finished the Mortal Instruments series additionally most people recommend reading tales from the Shadowhunter Academy before starting leading midnight because there are a few references that occur in lady midnight that you won't understand otherwise honestly you could skip tales from the Shadowhunter Academy altogether if you'd like but then going into leading midnight you're just gonna sort of have to accept things as fact and you won't be able to share in the excitement of all of these references ghosts at the shadow market is very much the same because these novellas were published before
