- **Handling and Braking**: Equipped with Brembo brakes, the Hellcat offers exceptional stopping power. Its suspension setup ensures excellent handling, making it a joy to drive on both city streets and racetracks.

---

### Design and Features: A Balance of Form and Function

Steve Beahn emphasizes the importance of design in these vehicles:

- **Aesthetic Evolution**: The Dodge Challenger has undergone subtle updates every five years, maintaining its classic long-nosed design while incorporating modern elements. The latest interior refresh further enhances its appeal, offering a comfortable and luxurious driving experience.

- **Practicality**: Despite being high-performance machines, the Hellcat is designed with practicality in mind. It comfortably seats five passengers, making it ideal for road trips and everyday use.

---

### Cultural Impact and Legacy

Jay and Steve discuss the cultural significance of Dodge vehicles:

- **Historical Context**: The 426 Hemi and GTO were icons of the 1960s, with their performance setting new standards. Today’s Hellcat and Demon continue this legacy, pushing the boundaries of what street cars can achieve.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh absolutely every time I started in the morning smile starts in my face you know you get a lot of trouble but this is not the car you borrow for the prom so effortless well in that episode of Jay Leno's Garage as you know we are huge dodge fans here at the garage big Mopar fans actually in fact I got one of the very first challenges back in 2008 when they come out with this new body style I think was car number 4 there were three people ahead of me I don't know who they were but that's okay car no before it's pretty good I love that car we had a lot of fun with it eventually we auctioned it off with the money going through the USO and that was a lot of fun and then of course the Hellcat came along Wow you got to get one of those 707 horsepower six-speed transmission still got that car and then of course the demon now the demon 840 horsepower they only built three thousand demons not building anymore that's it it's gone but well look this is something called the hell can't read I will explain what that is in a minute it's it's it's it's pretty cool let's meet the head guy at Dodge Steve beam Steve how are ya Ray J are you now now steve is not one of these guys that memorized a bunch of PR stuff he's been a drag racer been a car guy his whole life you've been with Dodge how long 32 years 33 years okay so if you don't know by now yeah so this is not one of those things where he just rattled off a bunch of stats he's the real deal and we this is pretty much the performance lineup for dodge and that it is you know very proud of the cars the way they look this natural is my DNA as you talked about right it represents about 25% of our challenger sales right here are these three models now it's funny to me because this is a 392 which in any other real world would be the biggest engine you could get but at the time the Dodge lineup it's really the smallest motor now in it it is horsepower wise it's the largest cubic inch wise but from a horsepower standpoint it is in this stable and third place so how many how many horsepower is did this is 485 horsepower okay 485 it's the the cheapest car you can buy under $40,000 spider horsepower see I like he said cheap and see most people if you work for the company you say least expensive but but you talk in real world terms and I like that and this you can get a cost with a six-speed and a manual and the whole deal right correct yeah I mean yeah this is a these are wonderfully incredibly fast cars I mean this is more horsepower than the Challenger had when it came out yeah when a challenger came out it was 425 horsepower right and then what we did add is well J is the wide-body right okay so that's new 419 here is though the wide-body that we did on the the Hellcat right now brought it down to the to the scat pack now what are these about 40 grand a little bit less little under 40 grant starts at 39,000 okay and a car full wheeled this and the whole full wheel disc Brembo brakes you know you can load it all the way up a sunroof but you want this one doesn't have it but you know it's it's a great value for the money now over here the Hellcat that everybody knows the legendary Hellcat is it still 707 horsepower they've changed that just change this going up to 717 okay it's 10 more 10 more the the reason here is the dual snorkel hood scoop is now functional so the air inlet allows naturally more horsepower as needed for more air more fuel and that's what this does and this has the 8-speed right this has the HP correct you know I've got 2015 if you've been to this website you've seen my health care and it's got a six-speed manual which I love which of the course is slower than the 8-speed automatic but it's just so much fun to drive the fun thing about these is it's just great road trip cars you know it's a big comfortable seat you know I'm not some stupid little Carroll bucket seat we have to sit like this I mean it's a big comfortable American car and it just eats the road I mean they're just wonderful to drive I really enjoy the Hellcat the suspension the power and now it's got even more power okay but other than that it's pretty well it's got the wide body and it does have the wide body on it three and a half inches wider a little bit more rubber on the ground right so whether you're it's a track on a road course gives you more traction more grip this runs right now is ten point nine and a quarter miles yeah all right yeah you know in the 60s we always talk about the Hemi cars and the GTO s and you know the 396 chevelles they were running in the 14s yeah anything under 15 you were a hero yeah now you're in the tens and it's hilarious hilarious and a car alright let's get to this I think I know what this is it's called the Hellcat red eye I know they only built 3,000 of those demons so there's got to be a lot of demon parts kicking around somewhere what do we have here tell us what this is yeah so the DNA naturally did come from the Hellcat and then it was possessed by the demon that's the red demon yeah so the engine inside the red eye is the demon engine a little bit different collaboration but for the most part the same block the same high-performance parts on the rods and and to make it withstand at 797 horsepower so it's it's a handful and the demon with the 840 horsepower that's running on special fuel yeah 110 fuel plus it just doesn't have the drag mode or the high octane mode nor the trans brake but it pretty much carries the same engine into right so it's basically the same thing basically can't call the demon because they only built three thousands right and personally I prefer a proper Road car me the demons you know you get one seat and all the soundproofing is stripped out of it I mean it was a lot of fun to drive him we actually did a wheel stand with it on the show okay it really did wheel stance but you had to put the little wheels and do the whole deal so I mean to me that's what make and this is available is this it's probably not a stick right this is this is automatic only okay any of your point you know the demon was a race traffic or race track purpose being right right and it's amazing this 8-speed can take that kind of power you know when I was a kid we nobody really believed that a torque flight would be faster than the force feed and Chrysler was the first one to have a transmission that could transmit at least on the street that kind of power and the fact that the torque flight was faster than a four-speed people just that really freaked people out back in the day because of you bang-bang slamming through the gears plus there's only three speeds and this is sort of the great-great-grandson of that isn't it I mean it is but massive I mean you're putting eight 140 horsepower through an 8-speed transmission and we'll get to drive this later but the harshness of the shift if you want it harsh can put in a sport mode or track mode and the speed and harshness it will shift is very impressive or you can put it in regular mode and it's just like driving order a daily driver and when you take this through the quarter mile also that how many of the eight speeds are you using in that quarter mile so it's normally in six speed when it goes through the equator my lights and do you hit six yeah you're going through in six right through the lights right depends on how much traction and right what RPMs you're shifting and what speed is that that's it a hundred and forty mile per hour in a street car well that's it that's hilarious to me can we open the hood out can we see how junctional would scoop works absolutely doing the eye open in here so we made the the inlet box a little bit larger than that as well since now we have a functional scoop that comes in right here I got you right we also have an introduction on the bottom side as well coming in through the wheel well so we end up having three inlets and then naturally coming in through the supercharger this is what's larger than the Hellcat the 717 horsepower that supercharger is a little bit more boost and allows you know a little bit more air to be put in which generates the extra horsepower okay and it's amazing what a difference this cold air package makes because you know when we did my 66 Ford seven liter car there we put a route 511 block in there and you know made 650 horsepower but on a hot day I was just choking on the road and I couldn't figure out and then I would open the hood and heat would come out and like like an oven it's 35 degrees is actually what this will reduce yeah that's what it's designed for that's what I mean so we put a cold air package then we built a box and it changed the whole character of the car so this this really does make a huge huge difference no doubt and then the other two things did point out to you is the the red eyes also insignia up here right on the top of the supercharged Y red eye what does what does that mean well again that's that's the the Hellcat that's the end one for the Hellcat and then the demon so this is the part of the demon which is the engine part and that's the red eye so could you drive a demon to church this is a question I think religious scholars will debate for centuries could you actually drive a demon to church and go inside without causing any subtle price I don't know I don't know but it just sort of makes me lavery deviled ham or whatever it might be but it's just well the other thing I tell you about the red IJ is that the way to pick it out because you know you and I be an old muscle car guys that the valve covers are actually black so two separate way from the Hellcat which are orange we we did these in black okay we gave it to again the the red eye up on top and outside of that the a little bit different calibration but it's the demon engine so it's just about 800 horsepower 797 yeah you know what's so funny when I bought my Dodge Viper in 92 I remember the salesman said this car has fallen or horsepower you know with emissions and upcoming environmental things you will never see that in a car again so all right so and then I bought it I don't know costed right away the next year they had 450 horsepower hyper you know but but that's what I love I see I believe engineers will save the world I mean he got a car that pollutes less gets better mileage and anything I mean back in the day six miles per gallon is what you got with the Hemi back in the 60s something like this and I imagine an eighth gear going on the freeway you're probably looking at 24 maybe 22 right now is what we're estimated officially up to 22 yeah but I mean that's freight horsepower that's pretty good it is yeah it's it's pretty amazing it's pretty amazing what else is different brakes these are Brembos all the ways are Brembos all the way around they have the the six piston in the front four in the rear so the the braking capability on the car is outstanding I think it's less than a hundred feet in terms of the the stopping from 0-60 yeah I see I love the fact you getting basically the same brakes as the European exotics at three or four times the price because it is the same brake didn't it yes it's the same thing yeah and these actually handle really well I I really enjoyed driving my Hellcat it is a lot of fun because it's just a big comfortable Road car you can take a long trip in a thing it might make a few extra gas stops well that's okay if it's entertaining I don't mind paying for it yeah we still think this is the one of the last true GTS I mean in the muscle car segment we got some great competition but ours is truly a five passenger vehicle yeah you're putting luggage in the back or clubs in the back be comfortable in the back seat as well so it's still a true GT car well to me the coolest one is also the charger with the four door that's because you in the and I'm told aerodynamically the four door charger is faster than the hellcat it's like 203 203 mile per hour time yeah yeah I mean that's pretty amazing because I sometimes I see cops go by me in those but I don't think they got to you know they don't get the hell camera they might have the six for it yeah so this is this side is functional is that side functional it is not it does dissipate a little bit of heat but other than that this is the only function okay but this is over the airbox where you want it now just to be clear this is not the only air intake you still have it right here next to the head right correct side the inner headlight and there's also one at the bottom of the wheel wheel over here so there's three places or sources of air to come in to feed this big supercharger I guess see if this hood retro fits on my 2015 very nice and this has line lock as well it does it we brought that down from the other demon okay we actually even put it over in the scat pack oh is that right Dean oh right yeah okay let's sadly it's raining here well it's kind of drizzling here in LA we haven't been outside for about an hour so maybe it's let up a little bit we'll take this thing for a ride and see how it handles in the race I mean it you bear like you're in traction when you're on the hundred agree day so but we'll see we'll see how it does we'll take it out in the rain because it's it's car it's a full road car that's what's fun about it come on let's give it a shot see how it goes see if I was head of marketing I would call this the great American road chart because that's really what it is I mean everybody comes not a faceted and that's fun but the most fun with any cars between 40 and maybe 110 miles anything above that now you're gonna jam and help people always go to the oil Coast - OH - it goes too old for to me it's how it feels on the road and that's what I love about me I mean I I've got a fan of this car for a long time I love my health care when I gotta take a trip I got a gig 90 miles away when I go out to Willow Springs and we shoot out there I take the I think the Hellcat because it's just you know the seats it's big it's comfortable this is really the best GTC I ve ever sat in I mean even you know Aston Martin and all those guys they're kind of cool but now they're getting into the Recaro racing seat thing you know I think the worst thing that ever happened to a lot of car manufacturers is Newburg ring they get you need take a luxury car and it doesn't Nurburgring in eight seconds everybody's not driving these on a road course every day right Erin engineer has done a nice job of putting the good balance still firm enough but yet come on it's funny firm and tight you're talking about that mile per hour driving that forty to eighty I love filling it over in manual mode oh yeah yeah go it over here let's see I've been sliding all over the road well I really like this body style and there are many body cells have been around that I still like like the Nissan GTR get a little longer to the same thing but this this holds up really well it's a classic long nosed short we're you know yeah we've done a nice job I think model every five years doing a little refresh the hoods as we talked about earlier today as well our engineering and design team did a nice job of giving us some updates in the interior and actually four years ago got an all-new interior you gotta love the wine too right yes enough there yeah it's just so funny to me now streetcars have the performance that even full-out racing cars didn't have no the Pro Stock NHRA cars back when I was drag racing ran in the i8 right okay not today they you know run six 40s or whatever but high eight this that's what the car we're trying to get out there testing today is going to try to absolutely every time I start in the morning smile starts on my face oh yeah well you need dry arid pavement you do you feel like spinning all the way yeah it's amazing I was civilized I mean they always talk about this in the 426 Hemi came out and a 90-day warranty which shows maybe lady yet three months and they found out you raced it you're out of God no warranty no nothing there were five years sixty thousand miles and srts you can race me yeah yeah that's part of it how many of us body style had they built since the new body style in 2008 so we we do right now about a hundred and fifty thousand a year so you probably millions is probably million yeah yeah that's amazing you know you get a lot of trouble with this is not the car you borrow for the prom well you got the idiot friends at the back and now they still have the two key deal we do yeah yeah yeah you guys never use the 500-horsepower yeah I think I threw it away I don't want I did with it yeah pal a key what's that used for I'm not gonna let a valet drive it so did the red-eye idea come from one person my guess is yes one person probably came up with the concept of Hellcat possessed demon yeah and there's the rest I like I mean I hate these things with marketing people than the study goes out and then they and then you wind up with something you know I met when the bike became out half the people loved it half people hated it seven beautiful is the sexiest car ever some people thought it was too cartoony well the cartoony feel I'm gonna buy it so yeah I don't sell it to the people who love it you know I mean when the committee designs a car you wind up with a Toyota Corolla which is a nice car but I couldn't I couldn't draw they couldn't tell you what it looks like yeah there's no passion no emotion to it you know that's what's fun I mean somebody likes the idea of redeye yeah okay I think it's right ahead guy Greta okay I just love that as opposed to we sent a red-eye thing out to our dealers and everybody's got their own idea and then you wind up with the paint guy because that's yeah it's middle of the road middle of the road thing that's what I like you either love it you're not gonna you gonna buy one you know yeah I love these things these are just great it really is a lot of fun well Steve congratulations thank you Nick thanks I think Dodge is in good hands you know Tim Connexus we loved him and he did the Hellcat and the demon and now you've got it so congratulations and that I think it's a good hand you a real car guy no you're a drag racer and your dad was a racer he was he was L so there you go but that this is the great American Road car I no doubt that's my slogan for because that's what I use it for the best once again Steve thank you very much thanks Jay and I'm sorry it's raining today we really can't do anything too much because these tires are just breaking loose even with just a little bit of dampness on the road you can feel it but thanks you guys see you next weekoh absolutely every time I started in the morning smile starts in my face you know you get a lot of trouble but this is not the car you borrow for the prom so effortless well in that episode of Jay Leno's Garage as you know we are huge dodge fans here at the garage big Mopar fans actually in fact I got one of the very first challenges back in 2008 when they come out with this new body style I of that the a little bit different calibration but it's the demon engine so it's just about 800 horsepower 797 yeah you know what's so funny when I bought my Dodge Viper in 92 I remember the salesman said this car has fallen or horsepower you know with emissions and upcoming environmental things you will never see that in a car again so all right so and then I bought it I don't know costed right away the next year they had 450 horsepower hyper you know but but that's what I love I see I believe engineers will save the world I mean he got a car that pollutes less gets better mileage and anything I mean back in the day six miles per gallon is what you got with the Hemi back in the 60s something like this and I imagine an eighth gear going on the freeway you're probably looking at 24 maybe 22 right now is what we're estimated officially up to 22 yeah but I mean that's freight horsepower that's pretty good it is yeah it's it's pretty amazing it's pretty amazing what else is different brakes these are Brembos all the ways are Brembos all the way around they have the the six piston in the front four in the rear so the the braking capability on the car is outstanding I think it's less than a hundred feet in terms of the the stopping from 0-60 yeah I see I love the fact you getting basically the same brakes as the European exotics at three or four times the price because it is the same brake didn't it yes it's the same thing yeah and these actually handle really well I I really enjoyed driving my Hellcat it is a lot of fun because it's just a big comfortable Road car you can take a long trip in a thing it might make a few extra gas stops well that's okay if it's entertaining I don't mind paying for it yeah we still think this is the one of the last true GTS I mean in the muscle car segment we got some great competition but ours is truly a five passenger vehicle yeah you're putting luggage in the back or clubs in the back be comfortable in the back seat as well so it's still a true GT car well to me the coolest one is also the charger with the four door that's because you in the and I'm told aerodynamically the four door charger is faster than the hellcat it's like 203 203 mile per hour time yeah yeah I mean that's pretty amazing because I sometimes I see cops go by me in those but I don't think they got to you know they don't get the hell camera they might have the six for it yeah so this is this side is functional is that side functional it is not it does dissipate a little bit of heat but other than that this is the only function okay but this is over the airbox where you want it now just to be clear this is not the only air intake you still have it right here next to the head right correct side the inner headlight and there's also one at the bottom of the wheel wheel over here so there's three places or sources of air to come in to feed this big supercharger I guess see if this hood retro fits on my 2015 very nice and this has line lock as well it does it we brought that down from the other demon okay we actually even put it over in the scat pack oh is that right Dean oh right yeah okay let's sadly it's raining here well it's kind of drizzling here in LA we haven't been outside for about an hour so maybe it's let up a little bit we'll take this thing for a ride and see how it handles in the race I mean it you bear like you're in traction when you're on the hundred agree day so but we'll see we'll see how it does we'll take it out in the rain because it's it's car it's a full road car that's what's fun about it come on let's give it a shot see how it goes see if I was head of marketing I would call this the great American road chart because that's really what it is I mean everybody comes not a faceted and that's fun but the most fun with any cars between 40 and maybe 110 miles anything above that now you're gonna jam and help people always go to the oil Coast - OH - it goes too old for to me it's how it feels on the road and that's what I love about me I mean I I've got a fan of this car for a long time I love my health care when I gotta take a trip I got a gig 90 miles away when I go out to Willow Springs and we shoot out there I take the I think the Hellcat because it's just you know the seats it's big it's comfortable this is really the best GTC I ve ever sat in I mean even you know Aston Martin and all those guys they're kind of cool but now they're getting into the Recaro racing seat thing you know I think the worst thing that ever happened to a lot of car manufacturers is Newburg ring they get you need take a luxury car and it doesn't Nurburgring in eight seconds everybody's not driving these on a road course every day right Erin engineer has done a nice job of putting the good balance still firm enough but yet come on it's funny firm and tight you're talking about that mile per hour driving that forty to eighty I love filling it over in manual mode oh yeah yeah go it over here let's see I've been sliding all over the road well I really like this body style and there are many body cells have been around that I still like like the Nissan GTR get a little longer to the same thing but this this holds up really well it's a classic long nosed short we're you know yeah we've done a nice job I think model every five years doing a little refresh the hoods as we talked about earlier today as well our engineering and design team did a nice job of giving us some updates in the interior and actually four years ago got an all-new interior you gotta love the wine too right yes enough there yeah it's just so funny to me now streetcars have the performance that even full-out racing cars didn't have no the Pro Stock NHRA cars back when I was drag racing ran in the i8 right okay not today they you know run six 40s or whatever but high eight this that's what the car we're trying to get out there testing today is going to try to absolutely every time I start in the morning smile starts on my face oh yeah well you need dry arid pavement you do you feel like spinning all the way yeah it's amazing I was civilized I mean they always talk about this in the 426 Hemi came out and a 90-day warranty which shows maybe lady yet three months and they found out you raced it you're out of God no warranty no nothing there were five years sixty thousand miles and srts you can race me yeah yeah that's part of it how many of us body style had they built since the new body style in 2008 so we we do right now about a hundred and fifty thousand a year so you probably millions is probably million yeah yeah that's amazing you know you get a lot of trouble with this is not the car you borrow for the prom well you got the idiot friends at the back and now they still have the two key deal we do yeah yeah yeah you guys never use the 500-horsepower yeah I think I threw it away I don't want I did with it yeah pal a key what's that used for I'm not gonna let a valet drive it so did the red-eye idea come from one person my guess is yes one person probably came up with the concept of Hellcat possessed demon yeah and there's the rest I like I mean I hate these things with marketing people than the study goes out and then they and then you wind up with something you know I met when the bike became out half the people loved it half people hated it seven beautiful is the sexiest car ever some people thought it was too cartoony well the cartoony feel I'm gonna buy it so yeah I don't sell it to the people who love it you know I mean when the committee designs a car you wind up with a Toyota Corolla which is a nice car but I couldn't I couldn't draw they couldn't tell you what it looks like yeah there's no passion no emotion to it you know that's what's fun I mean somebody likes the idea of redeye yeah okay I think it's right ahead guy Greta okay I just love that as opposed to we sent a red-eye thing out to our dealers and everybody's got their own idea and then you wind up with the paint guy because that's yeah it's middle of the road middle of the road thing that's what I like you either love it you're not gonna you gonna buy one you know yeah I love these things these are just great it really is a lot of fun well Steve congratulations thank you Nick thanks I think Dodge is in good hands you know Tim Connexus we loved him and he did the Hellcat and the demon and now you've got it so congratulations and that I think it's a good hand you a real car guy no you're a drag racer and your dad was a racer he was he was L so there you go but that this is the great American Road car I no doubt that's my slogan for because that's what I use it for the best once again Steve thank you very much thanks Jay and I'm sorry it's raining today we really can't do anything too much because these tires are just breaking loose even with just a little bit of dampness on the road you can feel it but thanks you guys see you next week\n"
