The Modified Saw Brewer WRX Clone: A Fascinating Story of Car Acquisition and Enthusiasm

I had been eyeing a Subaru WRX clone for some time, having previously owned a modified saw Brewer that I had thoroughly enjoyed. The CSS T was a great car, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity to upgrade to something even better. As I looked at the CSS T, I decided to take the WRX clone out for a spin as well, and from that moment on, my search was over.

The main reason I chose the WRX clone was its significantly more power than the CSS T, which had become too big for me after driving it around. Coming from a coilover-equipped WRX, I was surprised by how much better the turn-in and cornering capabilities of this car were. The 45s on the front tires seemed to be just right, allowing me to tap into the car's full potential.

One of the standout features of this car is its incredible oversteer. Unlike most cars that struggle with rotation, this one seems to want it – I mean, it wants to lift off and rotate. This is largely due to the active rear sway bar, which makes for a truly unique driving experience. As I drove on the track, my friends were all in awe of how easily the car rotated, and I was struck by just how much fun it was.

In terms of practicality, the WRX clone has definitely become my go-to choice for daily driving in Chicago. The snow can be brutal at times, but this car is more than capable of handling it – I've driven it through some of our worst storms and come out unscathed. That being said, I do miss having all-wheel drive, as it's a luxury that cannot be replicated with any other means.

Despite the initial hesitation about giving up all-wheel drive, I have found the WRX clone to be an absolute blast to drive. It has become my new favorite car, and I'm not sure how I'll transition away from it – at least for now. My next step is to find a two-door sports car, something that will allow me to indulge in my love of performance driving. Whether it's a Miata, S2K, or 370z, I know it'll be a fun ride.

As I look back on the various cars I've owned over the years, it's clear that each one has played a role in shaping my automotive tastes and preferences. My dad's Nissan Skyline GT-R was a particular highlight, as it had me falling deeply in love with rear-wheel drive sports cars. Now, with the WRX clone as my trusty steed, I'm excited to see where my next adventure will take me.

The WRX Clone: A Thrilling Ride Experience

One of the main reasons I fell in love with this car was its incredible handling and agility. Unlike most cars, it has a way of making you feel like it wants to rotate – and it does so without any need for advanced technology or clever engineering. It's almost as if the chassis itself is alive, responding to every little input from the driver.

The WRX clone has become my go-to choice for track days and autocross events. The car seems to love the twisty roads, devouring corners with ease and precision. It's a truly exhilarating experience, and I find myself grinning from ear to ear whenever I get behind the wheel. Whether it's a rainy weekend or a sun-drenched afternoon, this car always puts a smile on my face.

In terms of its capabilities, the WRX clone is more than up to the task – even in extreme weather conditions like Chicago's harsh winters. It may not be as practical as some other cars, but when it comes to sheer driving pleasure, I don't think there's anything better out there.

For those who've had experience with all-wheel drive vehicles, giving up that capability can be a difficult adjustment. But for this car, the lack of four-wheel drive is hardly noticeable – especially in relatively mild weather conditions. That being said, when it does snow, this car becomes an absolute blast to drive – I've taken it on some truly treacherous winter routes and come out unscathed.

It's not just the driving experience that sets this car apart; its design has also become a highlight of my daily routine. Whether it's cruising down Main Street or running errands around town, the WRX clone always turns heads – and I love the attention.

Overall, my time with the WRX clone has been an absolute delight. Its handling, agility, and sheer driving pleasure make it a standout in its class, and I'm not sure how I'll transition away from it anytime soon.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enbehind me is sitting a 2014 Ford Focus ST people have wanted it they wanted to me to talk about it touch it and here it is let's get right into it so I feel like I'm in the middle of the tornado right now which is par for the course but it's all worth it because I'm looking at this st and I'm thinking it looks a lot like a regular focus to me and that is because this is the original st and in 2015 they refreshed all this the hood got more aggressive the bumper got more aggressive they changed the headlights but what does that mean well not much because this is still one of the better-looking hatchback compact cars now in typical Ford fashion you have things like this the panel gap one side of the hood does not match like the other which is one of my favorite features about cars and it's just a consistency at least it's a consistency among Ford that they don't seem to care about that stuff across all their cars now it's time to talk about one of the most important parts because you're going to buy this because it's a hatchback that you can use it every day and when I open this up look at that there's no power liftgate here it just opens on its own via hydraulics and when I look at the cargo space of a hatchback I think can I put tires in here can I put groceries can I fit cadavers and I don't know that I could fit cadavers but I could do most of the things that average people do and obviously getting these seats down is a breeze there's no you know fumbling around but here we go with the typical Ford crap you have to have the front seat so far forward it's not a completely flat cargo space and then you have to do this stupid with the rear seat bottoms to get these things to fall flat I don't have to do that with other cars and that's a big boner kill for me with this thing and it was with every other focus as well now that I'm out of the wind I'm in the cabin or cockpit of the Focus ST and of course you're going to expect it you knew it was coming at this price point this interior in terms of the modern compacts is pretty bad compared to the new mazda3 the new Honda Civic this feels like it was designed by somebody that lived in outer space for about 50 years and came back down to earth the button layout these the number pad on here the dial numbers is reversed you almost have to be double-jointed to use this it makes absolutely no sense the vent design the upper - these gauges not really I don't know if you had the O'Riley parts guys or the autozone guys helped you design this or you pulled it out of the 99-cent then at the dollar store but it looks horrendous it just this is where the price point of this car stands out the most now of course when you drive it you forget about it and that's I can make an excuse for a car like this so that's that's really what I'm going to make the excuse for the Focus ST because if you can get this for twenty thousand dollars who gives a really and that's the way I feel about it now I ripped on the RS because that car is over 40 grand and of course then you don't make excuses for it seating position the seats in general this has the cloth versions and cloth seats namely M est are tremendous they breathe well you don't have the extremes in temperature that you get with leather seats in the winter where you're freezing your ass off or in the summer where you sweat like a bald baboon it just they feel really good and the bolstering is not overly aggressive like some of the Recaros where you're you feel like you're being squeezed by a Python you don't get that here and I think even people that are bigger boned are going to be extremely comfortable here and you're not sliding around it's just a good seat both passengers and driver's seat now if you're a beast and you're over 700 pounds and you need a forklift to get in here yeah you're not going to be comfortable it's still a small cabin now let's talk about some pros yes the ergonomics are pretty bad I mean I felt like this when I was driving the Fiesta in this car the gearshift when you're going into fourth if you're it's I feel like I'm constantly banging into the armrest and it's going to be a quirk for some people that drive this car just the placement of things is strange but the big thing that I like is there is a level of simplicity here you have physical buttons even though they look weird you have physical controls for HVAC there's no touchscreen in here and the owner of the car says without having the Ford Sync or the Microsoft Ford Sync or the Sony system blue - it just connects fast there's not a lot of bugs with it and you just don't have the clutter and have to deal with all the technology you're just not inundated with it so in that regard it is a more simple cabin space now the focus is an aging platform there's no doubt about it you can see it on the interior and exterior here but really it's one of those because you just have to get in don't rule it out because the interior even if you're fickle about the interior as I am take a look at it but more importantly we're going to take this bad boy for a drive and then I'm going to talk to the owner about his experience with it so let's do it so it's long overdue I am in the driver's seat of the Ford Focus ST this is a owner car a viewer car and I'm going to drive it and just see what happens I mean it doesn't take much other than about ten seconds behind the wheel of this car to understand how immediate the steering responses and how flat the car is and the second thing you notice is a throttle response I have all the drivers aids off it's not in sport mode its traction and stability off and you just get this instant sense of agility it's flat it's quick and this would be to me the ultimate like auto cross car I've already had it on the track and I'm just going to give you a quick look of what that looks like there now we don't live on the track obviously most of us are stuck in daily grind daily drives if you live in the city or a city or congested area any type of sports car or any type of fun car loses its charm in about five minutes but when you get on some back roads or some you know country roads where you can drive this in the in the way that it was meant to be driven there's just so much to be said about the way that it handles and performs you do have to get used to the way that the boost kicks in and it's typical of front-wheel drive cars that are turbocharged the car does want to you know fight you in the front the steering is there to fight you a little bit because of the torque but it's just the steering is so good here and if you can manage the throttle and you can manage the torque delivery this becomes an extremely fun car to drive there's just no doubt about it the other thing to talk about is feel economy because let's face it this is a more practical car you're gonna buy this at the hatchback you're going to daily Drive it you're going to use it for what it's meant to be used for is having a little bit of fun and practicality now the owner of this car says that he's gotten pretty much around 24 to 26 miles per gallon on the highway now if you're just putting around in the city or you're driving the pants off of it yeah you're going to saw it's going to suffer like any other car like this you're going to probably look down to the low 20s maybe the the upper teens if you're driving the pants off of it but really for the most part I would expect a combined you know 23 to 24 if you're you know doing a mix of both now let's see how this car kind of gets off the line up to about 60 that will spend some wheel hop torque steer again I mentioned this before when driving it you just have to wrap your mind around the fact that it's still front-wheel drive it's one of the best implement best implementations of front-wheel drive but you still have all the characteristics of that you know that layout in this car definitely has a lot of those negative attributes when you're driving and I think it's something as a driver you get used to I can tolerate it on here for the type of car that it is but there's certain vehicles that I can't like a regular car that's not a sporty car that has an eco turbo that gives you torque steer and just weird behavior with the turbos from a start that I can't deal with but here it kind of gives the car a little bit of character I'm not going to lie I'm not a big fan of it I think it feels just unrefined to put it that way but it's exactly what I expect this car to do so it doesn't know you know it doesn't set up any red flags for me it wouldn't be a deal-breaker but it's something if you're looking at a car like this you know go pound the piss out of it when you take a test drive and just see if you can live with some of the quirkiness of you know how the steering wheel is always tugging at you and it just the way that the boost kind of surges when you get on the throttle I can do donuts here front-wheel-drive down on the turning radius much like the RS is not the greatest it's not what you would expect from a typical compact car but yeah there's a lot of little things that you think about well you know these cons are kind of annoying when you look at some of the competition there's no doubt but you're not getting this level of performance from anybody else and when me and Scott joke about well what's a sports car you look at everything that's out there and you almost have to put the Focus ST in a sports car category because we have no other options and nobody's doing it this well at this price point and I think if you're going to take anything away from this in that that's really the biggest point try to find something else that you can get for around twenty to twenty thousand dollars that gives you this much fun to drive besides something used and you're just not going to find it I had a lot of complaints about the Focus RS ride quality even in normal mode and then in track mode it was an absolute joke it was something that there's no way you could live with on a daily Drive of you're putting serious miles on here now the Focus ST is also a firm ride but it's not it's not the kind of ride that distracts you from driving yes it's firm it's planted but you never feel like this thing is totally totally over sprung that it's over dampened you never feel like you're going to get totally sick of driving this car like you would the RS and I think that's a huge Pro if you're looking for a daily driver that's sporty really I think the last thing to talk about here is you know and as a package for the price it's just hard to argue yes if you're going to track this car you're going to have to deal with issues with heat soak I had one lap on Road America with this car and the brakes were totally faded out by them to the lab it's not you know you have to meter your expectations of what this car is it's like everything else if you're going to drive it hard if you're going to take it to a track you have to prepare for that you've got to use the right oils you've got to deal with cooling you got to deal with your brake pads and brake fluid like every other car but at $20,000 again you're going to have a budget to do some of this stuff whereas if you're going to dump 40-plus thousand on another car and you still have to do the same you know that might be a bigger deal than it is here but at the end of the day this is a very good experience for me and I would highly recommend if you're looking for if you don't have a budget you're looking for something cheap that's fun basically between this the 86 and of course the envy Miata this is a top pick I am in the car with someone else executive this is Tom this is his Focus ST and we're going to do a quick drive and I'm asking a few questions how do you feel about that I'm alright with it let's do it all right this is a good time to ask with the way that you're driving this part it would lead me to believe that you're a fan of nimble and quick cars I would say that's true yeah that's the reason one of the main reasons I got it for sure what other cars were you looking at besides this so I was looking at the CSS T that's why I went to the Ford dealer coming from a pretty heavily modified saw Brewer WRX clone so I looked at the CSS T and then decided to drive this one while I was on the lot as well and the rest is history I suppose watching Tuesdays over the Fiesta so I just I felt like I wanted more power and it has significantly more power and I just felt like it was a lot more car for less money at the time so I could get I got a killer deal on this but I could get you know the base Focus ST for essentially like three or four thousand less than a base CSS so that was that was pretty much standard iteration ahead but I mean the SST is a great car - very different in terms of you know the power band and just overall things like how nimble it is in smaller corners but you know autocrossing this has been just as enjoyable as you know cruising around in the psst was so I don't think I lost out in the in that sense but it was a concern of mine that this was going to be too big when I met her I was done but coming over from the WRX you know the salary was very much the same size why you know it seems like you've had a long history of kind of like being interested in Subarus and I know there's a lot of younger people out there that are just infatuated with Subaru why would you jump ship to this I mean it's kind of I mean I get into hatch but is there another reason the main reason was it is a blast to drive I I had a coilover fully bolted on WRX and this thing has way better turn in can corner even harder than you know even harder than the WRX could even with the coilovers and the wide I mean I ran two 45s on that this there's just something about the way this chassis is set up that made me completely forget my friend Allegiant sugru now I do miss all-wheel drive in Chicago winters at times now this cars completely capable completely capable with proper snows I've driven it through one of our worst snowstorms this year up to Minneapolis and back so it's completely capable no snow but it's just not nearly as fun I mean you cannot replace all-wheel drive with snow tax area that is true like you said it's totally capable but it doesn't replace them yeah I mean another selling point of this car and I think you mentioned it earlier was just a lift off oversteer I mean the car this car rotates unlike anything I've ever driven in terms of from crime it just has an extremely active rear sway bar that is a lot of fun yeah I didn't mention it but I did you know when I did my track drive with this car that's the first thing I think everybody notices about this platform and it does want it it does want to rotate it's not something that's longer steer prone and it is strange to have a car that you lift off so easily under load that it just kind of wants to lose ya or two so yeah it's I can see why you chose it especially for the price point yeah the price obviously was big I wanted to get something new looking back am I going to go new again I don't know but getting it for essentially 4,500 L under MSRP makes going new logic the last question is you know you're going from this now you're going to transition out of this what's not yeah so what's next well you already had my dad and his NB Vyatta and that's the hike fall in love with that car so I don't know we might have to be twins with our twin and Giada's and be father and son super lame way but no I don't know I think it's going to be a two-door sports car whether it's a Miata and s2k even a 370z I don't know but it's going to be something stupider something less practical something my mom wouldn't wanted me to get sure it makes sense I mean you need a trans blood of people transition away from front-wheel drive for a fun car and it's just immediately on yeah and and I like I was telling you my fiance has a Mazda 3 hatch so just my needs have changed so that helps a lot too yeah and it's good to go you know as any car buyer car owner experienced I think a lot of people especially the older you get the more you put into your resume of cars you've owned it's almost like a rite of passage you have to go through certain cars along the way so I've a v8 Mustang is on that list I got on a v8 yeah Scott oh yeah well it'll be hard to go back before poppers when you're done okay exactly but yeah again thanks for coming out oh yeah of course appreciate Tom showing us this car and we'll catch you next time youbehind me is sitting a 2014 Ford Focus ST people have wanted it they wanted to me to talk about it touch it and here it is let's get right into it so I feel like I'm in the middle of the tornado right now which is par for the course but it's all worth it because I'm looking at this st and I'm thinking it looks a lot lost out in the in that sense but it was a concern of mine that this was going to be too big when I met her I was done but coming over from the WRX you know the salary was very much the same size why you know it seems like you've had a long history of kind of like being interested in Subarus and I know there's a lot of younger people out there that are just infatuated with Subaru why would you jump ship to this I mean it's kind of I mean I get into hatch but is there another reason the main reason was it is a blast to drive I I had a coilover fully bolted on WRX and this thing has way better turn in can corner even harder than you know even harder than the WRX could even with the coilovers and the wide I mean I ran two 45s on that this there's just something about the way this chassis is set up that made me completely forget my friend Allegiant sugru now I do miss all-wheel drive in Chicago winters at times now this cars completely capable completely capable with proper snows I've driven it through one of our worst snowstorms this year up to Minneapolis and back so it's completely capable no snow but it's just not nearly as fun I mean you cannot replace all-wheel drive with snow tax area that is true like you said it's totally capable but it doesn't replace them yeah I mean another selling point of this car and I think you mentioned it earlier was just a lift off oversteer I mean the car this car rotates unlike anything I've ever driven in terms of from crime it just has an extremely active rear sway bar that is a lot of fun yeah I didn't mention it but I did you know when I did my track drive with this car that's the first thing I think everybody notices about this platform and it does want it it does want to rotate it's not something that's longer steer prone and it is strange to have a car that you lift off so easily under load that it just kind of wants to lose ya or two so yeah it's I can see why you chose it especially for the price point yeah the price obviously was big I wanted to get something new looking back am I going to go new again I don't know but getting it for essentially 4,500 L under MSRP makes going new logic the last question is you know you're going from this now you're going to transition out of this what's not yeah so what's next well you already had my dad and his NB Vyatta and that's the hike fall in love with that car so I don't know we might have to be twins with our twin and Giada's and be father and son super lame way but no I don't know I think it's going to be a two-door sports car whether it's a Miata and s2k even a 370z I don't know but it's going to be something stupider something less practical something my mom wouldn't wanted me to get sure it makes sense I mean you need a trans blood of people transition away from front-wheel drive for a fun car and it's just immediately on yeah and and I like I was telling you my fiance has a Mazda 3 hatch so just my needs have changed so that helps a lot too yeah and it's good to go you know as any car buyer car owner experienced I think a lot of people especially the older you get the more you put into your resume of cars you've owned it's almost like a rite of passage you have to go through certain cars along the way so I've a v8 Mustang is on that list I got on a v8 yeah Scott oh yeah well it'll be hard to go back before poppers when you're done okay exactly but yeah again thanks for coming out oh yeah of course appreciate Tom showing us this car and we'll catch you next time you\n"
