The Future of Smart TVs: An Interview with Lloyd Clark from Roku at CES 2014
This episode of TechnoBuffalo is brought to you by Toyota. I'm Ashley, and I'm here at Pepcom at CES 2014, where I'm joined by Lloyd Clark from Roku. Today, we're excited to share some exciting news about Roku's latest venture into the world of smart TVs.
Roku TV: A Game-Changer in Smart Television
Lloyd, can you tell us a little bit about why Roku made the jump from set-top boxes to full-on Roku TV branded right there on the bezel? We saw a problem with Smart TVs - they're really not living up to their potential. There's complexity, extra cost, and it's just something that we think is wrong. We want people to watch more TV, and the best way to do that is give them all their choices right on the home screen. So, we designed a TV for the people, for the way people watch TV today.
Will Roku TV Add Hundreds of Dollars to My Bill?
If you're shopping for a new smart TV, are you going to add hundreds of dollars to your bill? Will you have to spend a bunch of money on a smart TV? The answer is no. If you look at Roku prices before, you know they were very affordable. We want to make it attainable for almost anybody. This is what we're aiming for - to make smart TVs accessible to everyone.
Specific Size Range and Availability
We're focusing on specific size range, which is 32 to 55 inches. That's the initial range, but we do think it's going to be a platform that other manufacturers will adopt, so you'll see from a variety of different companies, a variety of different prices coming this late summer in 2014. Late summer, you're going to be able to get your hands on an actual full-on Roku TV - no more set-top box that you need to plug in. But don't worry; there will still be set-top boxes available.
Compatibility and Plug-and-Play Experience
If you happen to have a television that you recently purchased and can't quite upgrade yet, you'll still be able to plug in your Roku T or plug in your Roku set-top box and use it just like you do now. This is going to be a seamless experience for consumers.
The Remote: A User-Friendly Design
We've also developed the remote for our new smart TVs, which we think is not complicated at all. Many people are really big fans of this design, and we believe it's going to make a difference in how users interact with their TV. The remote is designed to be easy to use, even for those who aren't tech-savvy.
Roku as a Gift-Giver
Lloyd, I think it's great that you're highlighting the gift-giving aspect of Roku TVs. You give this to your grandparents, and they won't call you in the middle of a Sunday afternoon saying, "I don't know why this isn't working - which button did I push? Can't get back to the television?" This is really good for families and friends who want to enjoy quality time together while watching their favorite TV shows.
Conclusion
Lloyd Clark from Roku has given us an exciting glimpse into the future of smart TVs. With Roku's new venture, consumers can expect a user-friendly experience that makes it easy to access all their favorite streaming services and content. We're eager to see how this platform will evolve in the coming months and years.
