Get Rid of Batteries FOREVER!

The Joy of Battery-Free Devices: A DIY Guide to Creating Dummy Dowels

There are so many different kinds of batteries, and we use these little wonders in so many different devices. Wouldn't it be nice to never have to use one again? In this article, we'll show you how to create a battery dummy dowel, which can be used for various projects.

Measuring the Diameter of the Battery

The first thing I did was measure the diameter of this double-A battery because this is important. They're right around a half inch in diameter. This measurement will serve as a guide for creating the wood dowel that will replace the battery compartment.

Finding the Right Wood Dowel

After measuring the diameter of the battery, it was off to my local hardware store to find a suitable wood dowel. I found this half-inch wood dowel for under a buck, and as you can see, it's exactly the same diameter as the double-A battery. This wood dowel will serve as the base for our dummy dowel.

Cutting the Wood Dowel

With my trusty saw in hand, I made a mark on the wood dowel that was just a little bit shorter than the diameter of the battery. Then, I carefully cut through the wood dowel to create a small compartment that will fit snugly over the battery. This compartment is what will allow us to easily swap out batteries for our projects.

Rounding Off the Edges

To round off any splintered edges on the wood dowel, I used some sandpaper to smooth them out. This ensures that the dummy dowel fits comfortably in the battery compartment without causing any damage or discomfort.

Adding Screws and Pilot Holes

Next, I needed a couple of screws to secure the dummy dowel in place. I dug through one of my bins of wood screws and found two perfect ones for the project. Before screwing them in, I drilled small pilot holes at the ends of the wood dowel using a small drill bit. This helps to prevent the wood from splitting when the screws are inserted.

Assembling the Dummy Dowel

With all the necessary components in place, it was time to assemble the dummy dowel. I took the two screws and carefully screwed them into the pilot holes at either end of the wood dowel. This ensures that the dummy dowel fits snugly over the battery compartment without causing any leaks or electrical issues.

Adding a Regulated Universal AC to DC Adapter

For this project, I wanted to add a regulated universal AC to DC adapter with different voltages for demonstration purposes. I set it to 1.5 volts and clipped off the excess wire to prevent electrical shock. Next, I stripped the two wires coming out of the adapter and connected them to alligator clips.

Hooking Up the Dummy Dowel

With the regulator in place, it was time to hook up the dummy dowel. I attached the alligator clips to either end of the wood dowel and checked the voltage using my multimeter. The wire with the white stripe on the adapter was positive, so I connected it to the positive terminal of the dummy dowel.

The Final Touches

Before finishing the project, I wanted to add a bit of flair. I used a sharpie to mark the negative side of the wood dowel and added an extra measure of protection by marking both sides as well. Now that our dummy dowel is complete, we can use it for any device that requires batteries.

Applying the Dummy Dowel

For this project, I applied the dummy dowel to an outdoor clock that had a dead double-A battery. By simply popping out the old battery and inserting the new dummy dowel, I was able to breathe new life into the old timepiece. This is just one example of how our dummy dowel can be used.

Other Battery Sizes

But what about other battery sizes? We can create dummy dowels for various batteries using the same principle. Triple-A batteries would require a 3/8-inch wood dowel, C batteries would need a 1-inch dowel, and D batteries would call for an inch and 1/8-inch dowel.

Wiring Up for Different Voltages

One of the most impressive features of our dummy dowel is its ability to handle different voltages. By wiring it up correctly, we can use it with either one or two batteries. Just remember to pay attention to polarity and check the current flow in the battery compartment to ensure safe operation.
