Vacation Week: Tips and Tricks from the Expert Mom
Hey guys, I am so excited to announce that it is vacation week! The entire What's Up Mom's family is heading to Aulani, which is an amazing Disney resort in Hawaii. We're going to be posting videos every day, including a music parody that we are filming on location. Today, I am kicking things off with tips for travel snacks. I'm Meg, and I'm passionate about finding ways to make life with kids easier in the kitchen.
One of my favorite hacks for keeping food fresh during our travels is using frozen grapes or freezing tubes of yogurt to use as ice packs. Not only will your food stay fresh, but frozen grapes and frozen yogurt are delicious! You can easily grab these at most grocery stores and pop them in a bag to take with you on the plane. Another great idea is using snack-size bags for portion control. This way, your kids won't overeat, and you won't be left with half-eaten snacks lingering around the house.
With all the space we save by packing travel-sized snacks, we can really pack a variety of snacks to keep our kids interested. Travel snacks have two jobs: one is to nourish your kids, and the other is to keep your kids entertained. By mixing familiar and unfamiliar food together, you'll be able to satisfy both needs at once. I'm a big fan of different string cheeses – they're unrefrigerated for a few hours, making them perfect for travel. Individual granola bars are another great option; homemade muffins are the best! What's really great about these is when the kids are done eating them, you can pack a string in there and then play a game with them, like "string the O's" or "veggie and hummus." Just make sure to check the ounce limit on those hummus packs!
Sandwiches are also a staple for keeping our kids nourished during travel. I love packing peanut butter jelly turkey sandwiches – they're easy to eat on the go, and you can easily pack them in disposable tupperware to keep them from getting smushed. Another great idea is packing healthy snacks in your kid's carry-on bags and keeping treats in yours. This way, your kids can help themselves to their own snacks and won't have to ask for your permission. And let me tell you, it's a game-changer when you're stuck with limited space on the plane!
To avoid getting stuck paying airline prices for airplane food, I like to pack my own snacks in my checked luggage. It's so convenient to just grab what we need and go! Inside my checked luggage, I have a little tupperware container filled with all sorts of refills – granola bars, crackers, hummus, and more. For the kids, I pack new things every day to keep them surprised and excited. Make sure your kids can open their own food because, let's be real, you'll likely have too many hands full trying to feed everyone!
When it comes to cleanliness on the plane, there are germs everywhere! To keep everything clean, it's essential to pack a plastic bag for trash and sanitizing wipes for your hands. Trust me, these will come in handy when the kids start getting sick (and we all know that happens during travel). And while you're packing snacks and essentials, why not pick up a souvenir treat for the kids? This way, they can enjoy something sweet on the plane, and you'll have a memorable memento to take home.
Finally, don't forget mom and dad – or in our case, our entire family! When we're stuck on the plane with limited space, it's easy to realize that we're starving unless we eat the kids' snacks. So, do yourself a favor and get everything out of your fridge before you leave for the airport. Pack healthy, delicious meals that everyone will enjoy – trust me, it makes all the difference! With these travel snack tips, I hope you'll be able to make your next family vacation a breeze. Thanks for watching guys, and don't forget to tune in tomorrow for more from our adventures at Aulani!
