TOYOTA TACOMA - Everything You Need to Know | Up to Speed
**The Evolution of the Toyota Tacoma**
When they unveiled the second-gen Toyota Tacoma at the Chicago Auto Show, this new Taco was bigger and more powerful. With between transmission engines, cabs, and bed options, you could get it in a mind-boggling 18 different configurations. The Tacoma's 4-liter one GRE EFI V6 took the place of the original V6, now putting out 236 horsepower and 266 pounds of torque. It also meant the truck had a tow rating of 6,500 lbs and a payload capacity of 1,650 lbs.
Toyota also introduced an EX Runner trim, which replaced the slow-selling SR Runner. The EX Runner was lowered to 8 inches from the factory and featured the new V6 paired with a 6-speed manual. It had 18-inch alloy wheels and an X-brace suspension package.
The TRD Tacoma, in addition to its customary suspension upgrades, got downhill and hill-start assist control. Oh, and that pesky Ranger that edged out the Tacoma in 2004? In 2005, Toyota took the crown, selling more small trucks than Ford by 48,000 units.
More safety features were added in 2009, making the TRD one of the only small pickups that was an IIHS Top Safety Pick. In 2012, Toyota gave the Tundra a thorough refresh, including a refined exterior and completely redesigned interior. The hood, grille, headlights, and front bumper were updated, while the cab enjoyed a new center instrument panel and a gauge cluster that was both modern and primal.
The third-gen Tacoma was officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015. The truck was bigger yet again, with an exterior profile inspired by the 2014 4Runner and Tundra. They added more high-strength steel to the frame for rigidness and decreased weight. The suspension, rear diff, and rear axle were all tweaked to improve the trucks' on-road manners while still keeping it off-road capable.
To make the interior more luxurious, they added a noise-dampening windshield, better-insulated doors, and more weather stripping to reduce road and wind noises. Now your Taco wasn't crunchy; it was soft – because it's quiet, and because not all off-road surfaces are created equal.
The tech-heavy TRD Off-Road featured Terrain Select mode, which allowed the driver to steer through rough terrain while the truck managed braking and acceleration by itself. All this stuff was happening with the Tacoma, but there was one little thing that had been plaguing Toyota's little dude: rust.
More specifically, frame rust. So much rust that in November of 2016, Toyota Motor Corp agreed to a settlement of up to $3.4 billion for a federal class-action suit brought by US owners of pickup trucks and SUVs whose frames could rust through. That's not a part you want left in through – okay, that's like your skeleton; it's a taco taco egg that tacos tacos tacos.
The proposed settlement covered about 1.5 million Tacoma compact pickups. Toyota admitted no liability but said, "We want our customers to have a great ownership experience, so we are pleased to resolve this litigation in a way that benefits them and demonstrates that we stand behind the quality and reliability of our vehicles."
They agreed to inspect vehicles for 12 years from the day they were first sold. If they found the frames needed to be replaced, Toyota would pay for it. They also agreed to reimburse owners who previously paid for the frame replacement.
I'm glad we got that all behind us, perhaps to distract from their little oxidation snafu, Toyota chose late 2016 to introduce the very distracting TRD Pro Tacoma for the 2017 model year. This baby's more loaded than a buff horse – let's make it a thing, guys! That horse has so much mass and he's so cut; let's do this.
They sold about 200,000 of these bad boys in the first year. It's got TRD Pro catback exhaust, a TRD Pro skid plate, LED fog lights, a heritage-inspired Toyota grille, and hi-tech Fox shocks. The third-gen 2017 Tacoma set a new sales record for the model, meeting more people than ever are gonna be charging trails in the baddest truck out there – it's badass Chuck, then change the world!
This Taco's for you, Toyota! Little soggy ASMR bite
