The New 911: A Real Car for the Modern World

The new 911 is here and it's exactly what we've been waiting for - an all-new structure that finally meets our expectations. As the first all-new 911 since 2004, this car has set the bar high for its predecessors. The fact that it's made from effective all aluminium means that it's about people take a few pounds of rice 40 kilg light the car it replaces but it's quite a bit bigger physically particularly at the front where they managed to get 50 mil extra on the front axle so it's much wider at the front axle than the last car which should bring big benefits.

Dynam First Pleasant Surprise

One of the first pleasant surprises for this reviewer is that PDK transmission still has slightly funny sort of torture like looking lever, but the calibration is all new and it just feels sharp and it feels responsive in a way the other one didn't. The best compliment they could pay to the car's transmission is that it feels like someone's taken a Nissan GTR transmission dropped it in a 911, working in combination with this quite Revy zingy DFI engine it's a lively athletic Keen powertrain.

A Divisive Aspect - The Power Steering System

Perhaps the most divisive thing about this car is the new power steering system, which is electric and not hydraulic. This reviewer thought that the electric motor might struggle to keep up with what they're doing while making adjustments, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it works well. The reviewer notes that "it does lose some of that feeling" compared to a traditional hydraulic system, but this wasn't a major issue for them as they were able to accurately put the car on the road and make adjustments without any issues.

The Chassis - A Real Surprise

One of the real surprises for this reviewer is how well the chassis handles even on craggy California roads. It's described as "Supple breathes with the road, it's got compliance, it's got wheel travel" which suggests that the car feels very comfortable and forgiving. The wider front axle has also helped to eradicate the traditional 911 under steer problem, but there is still a slight issue with the engine pulling away from the rear wheels.

A Real 911 - What Matters Most

The first thing this reviewer needs to say about this new 991 is that it's a real 911. It feels like a 911, and its all-wheel drive structure makes it feel more refined, comfortable, and less fatiguing than its predecessor. The car has achieved two desperate aims: to be bigger, more refined, and more comfortable while still being sharper and more dynamic.

Performance and Powertrain

The powertrain is similar to the previous one but with a new PDK transmission that works much better this time around. The reviewer didn't get to try the seven-speed manual gearbox yet as it was not available for them at this moment.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enit doesn't really need an introduction does it it's the new 911 so the world the wife his dog and his Tais have driven the Porsche 991 and finally I'm getting a go in what is the first allnew 911 since 2004 the big news is that the 991 is the 911 structure we've always been waiting for it's effectively an all aluminium 9911 and it means that this Carrera S pdk car is about people take a few pounds of rice 40 kilg light the car it replaces but it's quite a bit bigger physically particularly at the front where they managed to get 50 mil extra on the front axle so it's much wider at the front axle than the last car which should bring big benefits Dynam first pleasant surprise is this pdk transmission still the same slightly funny sort of torture like looking transmission dropped it in a 911 so working in combination with this quite Revy zingy DFI engine it's a lively athletic Keen powertrain I really like it so that's the first pleasant surprise but perhaps the most divisive thing about this car is the new power steering system it's electric it's not hydraulic okay it's not the perfect steering system and it does lose some of that feeling I don't like the word feel you know that but it does lose something but I can put the car very very accurately on the road and crucially mid corner on steady steering angle I can then make an adjustment and it doesn't feel like the electric motor struggling to keep up with what I'm doing so steering yeah a pleasant surprise I thought it was going to be a real problem and the chassis well we're on some pretty craggy frankly bad Californian roads and it's pretty mind-blowing it's Supple breathes with the road it's got compliance it's got wheel travel I can't really find too much to fault it and this wider front axle well there's no doubt it gives the car just more front end grip you know the traditional 911 under steer problem well they' kind of eradicated it not completely we're 98% of the way there it still is ass engine you know I can't deny that but it just feels it feels like a step on from the last GT3 RS and that's a a big compliment to pay a standard 9 the first thing you need to know about this new 991 it's a real 911 it feels like a 911 it's all I can say about it really but what's really interesting is it seems to achieve two desperate aims on the one hand this is a bigger more refined more comfortable car than the 997 the nvh levels particularly the Ty noids have been reduced massively and that's very impressive makes it more comfortable less fatiguing but on the other hand it's actually a sharper more Dynamic car that front axle width means it turns in better the chassis is just more impressive the powertrain is very similar to before but as I said the pdk is now more impressive as well didn't try the seven-speed manual have to wait till we get to the UK it's not perfect the 991 but it's very very close to being soit doesn't really need an introduction does it
