DJI Mavic 2 Series Drones - Hands On Review

what's up everybody drew Prindle here from Digital Trends so for the past week I have been testing out these two drones you see in front of me the Mavic tube pro and the Mavic to zoom

I've basically just been comparing them to each other and seeing what sets them apart from other DJI drones

so let's get into it

so compared to the first generation Mavic line the biggest improvements in the Mavic 2 is basically in the areas of software sensing abilities and cameras

let's start with the software

both the Pro and the zoom can run DJ eyes new active track 2.0 software which is basically what allows the drone to autonomously fly and film stuff to big changes

there it can now predict where your subject is going to be so we can stay on track even better and now it can also stay locked on even when you move behind obstructions

so basically it won't lose you if you go behind a tree or a rock or whatever

on top of that both of these drones also have DJ eyes new occu sync 2.0 video uplink systems

so this now allows you to see what the drone sees in 1080p instead of just 720p from up to 5 miles away

that also means that you can view and edit HD videos right from the video cache in your phone if you want to

so technically you could crash your drone and still have the footage without having to recover the drone and pull the card out

the next big improvement in the Mavic 2 series is the environmental awareness system

so unlike the original Mavic Pro which only had forward obstacle avoidance

the mavet 2 has 10 sensors spread across all of its sides so that gives it forward backward upward downward and left and right obstacle avoidance

it is worth noting however that left and right obstacle avoidance are only activated when the drone is in active track mode and the drone is kind of flying itself and you know maybe flying sideways

so we can film you anyway

it's got omnidirectional sensing and while this technically doesn't make it crash proof it definitely helps you fly with way more confidence than you've ever had before

last but not least we have the cameras

as I mentioned before are the only things that differentiate the zoom from the pro

the Mavic tube Pro arguably has the better camera of the two

there's a lot to dig into here

but the most important thing to know is that it's outfitted with a Hasselblad camera with a one-inch CMOS sensor

so basically means it's gonna have a better low-light performance better colors better dynamic range pretty much better everything

it also has an adjustable aperture which is going to give you a little bit more control over how much light is coming in and also the depth of field that your camera has

it can also record video with 10 bit colors

so 10 bit might not sound like a big improvement from 8-bit color that came in previous DJI drones but it's actually a pretty big deal

so 8-bit color recording can only capture about like 16.7 million discrete colors but 10 bit can literally do billions

what the Mavic tube pro can't do is zoom and that's where the Mavic zoom comes in

this sucker has twenty four to forty eight millimeter optical zoom which really opens up a lot of doors in terms of just creative freedom

one of the best examples of this is probably the dolly zoom effect where you can zoom in on something and fly backward or fly forward and zoom out and it will create this really weird distorted visual effect that's really really fun to use and totally makes you forget the fact that the zoom has a small error one over 2.3 inch sensor and doesn't record in 10-bit color

so if you're a professional filmmaker or photographer I'd say you probably just want to get both of them if you can afford it

it's kind of a bummer that DJI didn't make the cameras swappable

if you had to choose one I would say go with the Mavic tube pro just because it has better image quality and it has aperture control and the images are just going to look better

on the other hand if you are more of a casual user or hobbyist I would say snag the zoom it's just going to be more fun and creatively liberating and also it's 200 cheaper

alright guys thanks for watching this video definitely let us know in the comments which one of these two drones you think is better we want to hear from you

also if you want to dig into more of the specs get a little bit more detail head over to digital trends comm and check out our full review
