McLaren 650S Spider - Roof System and Tonneau Storage

How the Roof Works on the McLaren 650S Spider

We're currently at the McLaren Manchester showroom and I wanted to show you one more thing with the 650S while we're still here. Before I take a little break over the Christmas period, I wanted to share with you how the roof works on this car. Obviously, this car has the carbon tub, which retains a lot of the rigidity of the coupe in the spider form but without the roof. So, let's dive into it.

The folding hardtop roof fits away under this tonneau cover and when it's up, you can fit luggage in the back. Let's take a look at how it works. I'll just hit the ignition and turn on the car. Okay, now that I've got the buttons here, the two-way toggle switch pull it up. The roof is going to fold up nice and thud. And then the tonneau cover closes down at the back nice and easy. It doesn't take very long at all. You've also got that rear window too.

One of the cool things I love about the 650S is the two-way toggle switch, which allows you to have both the roof up and the windows open or closed. When the weather isn't great, and you're driving on a nice road, it's just as easy to keep the roof up as it is to keep it down. And with this feature, you don't lose any soundproofing at all.

On either side of the roof, there are buttons that open and close the tonneau cover. If I press the button, it will lift back, and that's where you get this little bit extra luggage space about 50 or so liters. You have two bags that sit here, and on the other side, they're actually perfectly shaped for that compartment. However, if you do put stuff in there, don't forget to fold the roof in because it's not going to end well at all.

When I press this button again, it will push back down, and the chimes when it's done. Let's just get the roof open back up by pressing this button. Okay, now that I've got the roof open, it goes pretty cool. And then when you've got the roof down, you can also still have this window up or down or however you want it. There are various stages, and they work very neatly.

Lots of noise and the windows go up with the roof as well, so let's put them back down with the switches on here. Cool! Click off the ignition easy, you can do it when you're driving which is convenient. Of course, lots of cars do that now but less so with the folding hardtop, so this nifty feature to have.

The McLaren 650S Spider has a carbon fiber exterior pack, which includes the front splitter finished in 650s t-shirts already made including the lime green color scheme. I hope you've had a very merry Christmas if you haven't already checked out the vid, check out the video unwrapping this here in the McLaren Manchester showroom.

Inside the showroom, we can see exactly what we're here for, one visually, we've got the carbon fiber exterior pack so the front splitter finished in 650s t-shirts already made including the lime green. It's a beautiful car, and I'm glad we could take a closer look at how its roof works.
