The Best 4K Gaming Monitor - ASUS ROG PG32UQ Review

The PG32UQX is a 4K monitor that offers high peak brightness, making it suitable for HDR experiences. Although it doesn't meet all three requirements necessary for proper HDR, it still outperforms most current gaming monitors in its price class. The monitor's performance and overall gaming experience make it a great option for those seeking an immersive gaming experience.

One of the standout features of this monitor is its speed performance. It performs well and offers a nice all-around gaming experience that one would expect from these specs. However, it's essential to note that the monitor's motion clarity can be improved by increasing the overdrive setting, but it also introduces some overshoot or inverse ghosting, which might not be desirable for everyone.

It's worth mentioning that the M32U data has been updated since my review, with a firmware update that cut the input lag by about five milliseconds. This change makes the monitor even more suitable for fast-paced games and high-refresh-rate gaming monitors. The M32U is also available at a lower price point, making it a viable alternative to the PG32UQX.

Another aspect of this review is the 32-inch form factor of the monitor. While mostly focusing on the M32U as the main competitor due to its similar specs, the PG32UQX offers an excellent experience in terms of size and immersion. A 32-inch panel provides a more immersive experience, especially for work and gaming alike. However, some gamers might prefer the sharper visuals offered by a 27-inch monitor.

Ultimately, the choice between this monitor and the M32U comes down to personal preference. For those seeking an all-around great monitor that can handle various tasks, including gaming and creative work, the PG32UQX is a fantastic option. However, if budget is a concern, the M32U offers similar performance at a lower price point.

The PG32UQX also has some advantages over its competitors, such as offering brighter peak brightness, wider color range, a fancier stand, and higher bandwidth HDMI 2.1 port. These features make it an excellent choice for console players. In contrast, the M32U is available at a lower price point but may not offer all the premium features of the PG32UQX.

When choosing between these two monitors, one must consider their specific needs and preferences. If budget is not a concern and immersion is key, the PG32UQX might be the better choice. However, if affordability is a priority, the M32U offers similar performance at a lower price point.

In conclusion, the PG32UQX is an excellent monitor that offers high peak brightness, fast speed performance, and a great gaming experience. While it may not meet all three requirements necessary for proper HDR, its overall performance makes it a great option for those seeking an immersive gaming experience. With its 32-inch form factor, it provides a more immersive experience than its competitors.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi everyone ada here and today i'm going to talk about this rog swift pg-32uq it is a 32-inch gaming monitor with an ips panel 4k resolution and 144hz refresh rate and it has a proper hdmi 2.1 connection which means that this monitor will be great for people gaming on a pc but also for people that like to game on a console now unlike the pg32uqx that i reviewed a few months back this monitor does not have mini led backlight but a regular one and it does not cost 3 000 euros but it will still cost you around a thousand or so so let's check it out see what is interesting about it and if it's worth getting at all let's begin this video is brought to you by corsair and their mp600 pro lpx ssd this high performance gen 4 ssd offers read speeds of up to 7 100 megabytes per second and it comes with a nice low profile heatsink making it a perfect fit for your playstation 5 as well as your pc it is available in several capacities going up to 4 terabytes and it comes with a comfortable 5 year long warranty check it out using the links in the description below so when it comes to the design this monitor is very similar to earlier rog models which is not a bad thing the stand is exceptionally well built and sturdy and it is now all black without any copper details which does make it look a bit more elegant in my opinion and while the front looks pretty clean the back side is very gamey with big plastic covers and a very large rgb logo that you probably won't see anyways the stand is height adjustable you can tilt it you can swivel it around its axis but you cannot rotate it to 90 degrees which is not something you would do with a monitor of this size anyway and when it comes to connections they're actually pretty great so you get one displayport connection two hdmi 2.1 connections an audio jack and a usb hub and as i mentioned before these are proper hdmi 2.1 ports as well so they support 4k 120 hertz gaming without chroma sub sampling on both a playstation 5 and xbox series x as well as a pc now interestingly enough this monitor has some speakers built in as well which are uh good enough to listen to a youtube video for example if you don't have a choice but like with most gaming monitors it is not really great and i would say a good set of speakers or a good gaming headset would do a much much better job now as usual the osd is great it is well laid out it offers all the usual features that you would expect to see on a high-end gaming monitor including a lot of different color modes and customizations as well as plenty of game related extras like crosshairs like contrast enhancers and so on and you can control the osd using the joystick which works really well or if you prefer you can download the software and use your mouse and keyboard instead but let's talk about the image quality which is where this monitor um truly shines so the color gamut or the range of colors that this monitor can display is actually exceptional it covers the complete srgb and adobe rgb color space and almost the entire p3 space as well now compared to some of the other monitors that i've tested so far only the much more expensive and professional pro art monitor offers a wider color gamut while most other monitors offer anything from a bit less to a lot less there are a couple of other 4k 144hz monitors in this list but the main one uh to keep an eye out for is the gigabyte m32u which is cheaper but the asus does offer a much wider color range factory calibration is a little bit more complicated though so in the default mode which is the racing mode actually some results look really good but it's not really accurate so the gray balance for example is set really well the gamma curve looks great which does give it a good first impression but many of the colors are actually over saturated out of the box so this is quite nice for gaming because it makes the colors really pop up but it will not be great for a color accurate creative work but they do include a nearly perfectly calibrated srgb mode which kind of works as a clamp because it basically limits all the colors of the screen to that srgb color space while being very accurate so if you're working with colors you need to make sure that you swap to that srgb mode and you will be good right away or you can just go ahead and calibrate it manually now this screen has a fantastic color gamut so you can easily calibrate it to any color space i kind of do wish they added a p3 mode as well but it's good to know that you can set it yourself if you have a proper calibration tool the viewing angles are very good as it is an ips panel and this sample showed no visible backlight bleed either but the uniformity of this sample is actually below average a 10 variation in brightness across the screen is not a great result and a nearly 20 drop in brightness in the worst spot compared to the center is also worse than i would like to see now given that this is a large screen it is pretty hard to notice this subjectively and i don't think it should be something that you should really worry about a lot but it is something to keep in mind now uniformity does vary from sample to sample which means that some models and shops might be better but it also means that some models might be worse so if you end up buying this monitor i would check if the uniformity is worse and if it bothers you before your return period expires so all you need to do is just display a couple of colors full screen and if it looks good to you that's all that matters now in my tests the m32u did do better but the pg-32uq ended up being a lot brighter the peak sdr brightness is 400 nits which puts it roughly in the middle of the graph but there is also more than you'll need even if you plan on using this monitor in a very bright environment the minimum brightness however is a bit higher than average but again uh not really something to think about unless you're someone who dims their monitor all the way and plans on using this monitor in a pitch dark environment more importantly the maximum brightness in hdr is actually pretty good at 668 nits it is a lot brighter than most other monitors including the m32u and it is bright enough to actually make those hdr highlights pop a bit which is something that you won't really get with hdr 400 monitors now of course this isn't anywhere near as bright as those mini led monitors like the pg32 uqx and those mini led monitors also have much better local dimming than this one so this one only has 16 zones which is not enough to call it a proper hdr monitor but because of its wide gamut and fairly high peak brightness it still kind of checks two out of three boxes that are needed for proper hdr experience which is still better than most current gaming monitors have to offer even in this price class so even though it's not as good as the pg32uqx i would still turn the hdr on because you will see a difference now when it comes to speed this monitor performs well and offers a nice all-around gaming experience that you would expect with these specs i would recommend you keep it on the default overdrive setting of three as that works great without any noticeable overshoot if you increase it it does seem to increase motion clarity a tiny bit but it also introduces some overshoot or inverse ghosting which i personally really find uncomfortable objectively though it seems in line with other fast 4k gaming monitors but it is behind some others that have lower resolutions and high refresh rates which is again something that you would expect from this monitor keep in mind that the m32u data has been updated since my review because there was a firmware update that cut the input lag by about five milliseconds which is a lot and i also included the pg-32 uq as a 4k 155 hertz monitor because there is an oc option to increase the refresh rate beyond its official 144 hertz spec but whether you run it to 144 hertz or 155 the end result is the same and the gaming performance of this monitor and the m32u is really similar and basically it's impossible to tell them apart so if you're choosing between these two you'll want to consider other differences not this speed performance and all this kind of brings me to perhaps one of the more subjective aspects of this review and that is the 32 inch form factor so far i mostly focused on the m32u as the main competitor because it has the same specs but if you look at the eve spectrum results for example it generally seems to perform better and even though they both have a fast 4k ips panel there is a huge difference in experience between a 27 inch and a 32 inch panel now the much larger size is great for both productivity and the immersion in games and to me personally it is a nicer size to pair with that 4k resolution now a 27 inch monitor will look a bit sharper but a 32 inch one is sharp enough for me while being more pleasant to work on maybe if you're really into fps games a 27 inch model is nicer because it's easier to track everything on the screen but again if all you do is play a fies games you don't really need a 4k monitor anyway so basically it all comes down to personal preference and for me i think that a 32-inch panel offers a more balanced experience especially if you use it both for work and for gaming and that is what makes this type of a monitor so appealing to a lot of people it is really mostly great at almost anything so it's not going to be the fastest but it is fast it's not going to offer the best hdr experience but it is still pretty decent and it just handles all tasks pretty well uh whether it's playing games or doing some creative work for example and i know that the term of mostly great is not going to be good enough for some people especially when you need to spend 1 000 on it but the reality is that there are not many better combinations out there and then definitely not at the similar price point you can either go for a 27 inch for marginally better performance while sacrificing the overall experience or you can go for a mini led alternative that will give you better hdr but at that point you'll be spending way more than a thousand dollars the only way to get a similar or better performance at these prices is to step down in terms of specs and look at some 1440p monitors as they offer extremely good performance and extremely good value these days but then you need to make sure that you want to step away from that 4k resolution and if the answer is no this monitor is really a great option with your main alternative being the m32u now the gigabyte is going to be around 200 cheaper but this asus does go brighter it offers a much wider range of colors a fancier stand a higher bandwidth of the hdmi 2.1 port and all of that is really sweet for console players as well so while i think the m32u offers a better value if you're on a budget i think this pg32u is a better monitor if you can afford that price premium so you need to think about what matters to you and then choose accordingly anyway that is it for today i thank you so much for
