Introducing Touch ID: A New Way to Unlock Your Phone
As John Rer from TechnoBuffalo says, "it's all about fingerprint scanning and touch ID." He believes that using a passcode or a picture of your face is so last year, and it's time to move on to something new and exciting. In this article, we'll dive into the world of Touch ID and explore how it works, its benefits, and whether it's going to be integrated into all future phones.
Setting Up Touch ID
To set up Touch ID, John Rer follows these steps: "go into settings, go to General, and you've got a new Option here passcode and fingerprint." He then pulls us off to the side to put in his code for just a quick second. Once he's done, he comes back and shows us all the options available. So, "turn passcode off if you'd like to require passcode immediately simple passcode fingerprints," he says. "This is where sort of the action happens right inside of there."
By default, your fingerprints are not going to be named, but John Rer has the option to edit them. He hits the edit button and selects a name for his thumb, saying "we'll keep thumb there." However, he also mentions that he doesn't have his pointer finger in the list sometimes, which is why he's adding it now. To add his fingerprint, he lifts his finger, rests it on the phone, and taps it. You'll see the red start to fill in on the gray screen as your fingerprint is recognized.
Editing Fingerprint Names
John Rer explains that once you've added a fingerprint, you can edit its name. He shows us how to do this by hitting the edit button. When you hit edit, he selects his finger and gives it a name. "We'll keep thumb there," he says, but also mentions that he's adding another finger, which is his pointer finger. This way, John Rer can keep track of both his thumbs.
Using Touch ID
Now that we've set up our fingerprints, John Rer shows us how to use Touch ID to unlock our phones. He takes a selfie and says "now I'll go ahead and add fingerprint." He lifts his finger, rests it on the phone, and taps it, which triggers the fingerprint recognition process. When he does this again, you see that the red start to fill in on the gray screen as your fingerprint is recognized.
John Rer also shows us how to use Touch ID with multiple fingers. He creates a new name for his pointer finger and adds it to the list. "You could use really any finger or toe if you want," he says. He even tries using his toes, which is a unique feature of Touch ID. When John Rer uses his pointer finger, you see that the red start to fill in on the gray screen as his fingerprint is recognized.
Conclusion
John Rer concludes that Touch ID is a very nice way to unlock your phone without having to look down or take your eyes off whatever you're doing. He also mentions that it works very quickly and is very secure, although he's sure there will be exploits for it in the future. "Is this something it's going to be integrated into all future phones?" John Rer asks. We'll have to wait and see, but for now, Touch ID seems like a convenient and innovative way to unlock your phone.
