2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 Review - WOW is this thing good !

**A Comfy Car with Excellent Road Manners**

The ride quality of this car is excellent, and it's clear that it has been designed to provide a comfortable driving experience. The road manners are superb, especially on twisty roads, where the car handles beautifully and corners are navigated with ease. One of the standout features of this car is its lovely road presence, which makes it feel like a joy to drive.

The car's comfortable driving position and massive amount of visibility make it an ideal choice for families or those who need a car that can handle heavy loads. The large door mirrors provide excellent visibility, allowing drivers to see what's going on around the car without having to turn their head. This makes it easy to maneuver in tight spaces and provides a sense of security while driving.

**A Look at the Mileage**

One thing that caught my attention during the test drive was the mileage of the car - it had only 133 miles on the clock, making it essentially brand new. While this is likely due to the fact that it's a demo model or a test car, it's still impressive to see how low the mileage is.

**Road Holding and Engine Performance**

The road holding capabilities of this car are exceptional, especially considering its size. It has a nice pull-away from traffic, which makes it easy to get moving without feeling overwhelmed by the power of the engine. The 2.0 L twin turbo engine has some real punch, making it a great choice for those who want a bit of performance without sacrificing comfort.

The engine is one of the three options available in this model, and I'm intrigued by the possibility of a petrol supercharged engine being added to future models. This could be an interesting alternative to the diesel engines that are currently popular, especially in markets where there's less emphasis on fuel efficiency.

**A Note on Special Vehicle Operations**

One thing that was mentioned during the test drive is that this car wouldn't typically be considered for Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) vehicles, which are usually reserved for more exotic or high-performance models. However, I think it would be amazing to see SVO get hold of one of these cars and breathe some life into them with a proper petrol supercharged monster engine.

Overall, this car is an excellent choice for those who want a practical family vehicle that's also comfortable and enjoyable to drive. With its great road manners, impressive engine performance, and generous amount of visibility, it's no wonder I'm massively impressed by this car.

**Conclusion**

After spending time in this car, I can confidently say that it's an excellent choice for those who want a reliable family vehicle. The combination of comfortable driving position, plenty of visibility, and great road manners make it an ideal choice for families or individuals who need a car that can handle heavy loads. With its impressive engine performance and range of features, this car is sure to be a hit with Land Rover enthusiasts.

**Additional Notes**

As I mentioned earlier, the test drive was conducted on a short, twisty road section. While it's not an exhaustive test, it did provide me with a good sense of how the car handles in challenging driving conditions. The car's handling is superb, and it's clear that Land Rover has done a great job in designing a vehicle that can handle both comfort and performance.

While I didn't have a chance to spend more time in this car, I'm confident that it would be an excellent choice for many families or individuals who need a reliable and comfortable vehicle. With its impressive engine performance, generous amount of visibility, and great road manners, this car is sure to be a hit with Land Rover enthusiasts.

In conclusion, the test drive was a pleasure, and I'm excited to see how well this car will hold up in real-world driving conditions. Whether you're a family looking for a reliable vehicle or an individual who wants a comfortable ride, this car is definitely worth considering.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys and welcome to petrol ped so I'm at Goodwood cuz today is a Hardwoods track day and I'm about to take out for a test drive a car I've been waiting to drive for ages the new discovery 5 I am an exis Discovery owner we had a disco 3 for probably four or five years and it was one of the best cars we've ever owned and I've been desperate to get hold of this car so when I turned up today and they had one and I said would you like to take it up the road I thought well absolutely so let's take a quick look around it here and then we're going to take it up the road just just a short drive just to see what it feels like but I think it should be quite something the new discovery 5 has more rounded lines and a styling bringing it more in line with members of the Range Rover family don't be fooled under that exterior is a full-on 4x4 with all the practicality and usability of the old disco it's 14 cm longer slightly lower in the roof line and 480 kg lighter than its predecessor so the sun really isn't helping me here but I've opened up the boot and it's got the ability to make this a 7- seat car like the old disco with the floor um hidden seats but it's all electric so there's a control panel just here so let's just have a look at the various different ways I can reconfigure this car at the touch of a button look at that it's very lazy but incredibly cool and the boot space once you drop those seats down like any Discovery is just cavernous there is such a lot of space in the boot room for for five adults and lots of luggage or dogs or seven adults the seats aren't just for the kids the front seats are like armchairs and the dash and trim materials in this hsse model are of the highest quality in fact it feels more like a Range Rover you're surrounded by luxury stepping into the discovery feels really special and the well-laid out Dash is full of jlr technology and lovely materials this car is powered by the sd4 a 2 L twint turbo diesel with 237 BHP and 500 Newton M of torque n 60 takes 8 seconds and you'll get 43.5 MPG there's also a 3 l diesel the td6 6 with 255 BHP and 600 n m and an si6 a supercharged V6 petrol with 355 BHP and 450 new M okay guys so here we are behind the steering wheel of the brand new discovery 5 uh and I've driven a lot of Jr cars recently so there's an awful lot in here that looks familiar in terms of the infotainment system the driving controls um and I guess the first major impression is this is a big car in terms of scope from the outside and we've already kind of had a look at how we can configure the seats in the back for seven adults I mean it's a massive amount of space in here but it doesn't feel that big behind the steering wheel and that having having had a disco before and that was quite a big feeling car this doesn't feel like that at all which is quite interesting so without further Ado let us get going we should put it in drive so we have uh a a normal kind of short route we doing the normal route yeah um so it's not a massive amount of time for me to really play and and and and have a feel for the car but it should be enough so what we've got underneath the Bonnet is the the 2 L ingenium diesel engine um and it's got It's got some blowers on it as well so it's it's a more powerful engine than uh in the discovery sport that you may have seen my drive and even just pulling away there it it does feel like it's got more urgency now obviously this isn't a performance car but that in just standard drive mode the acceleration there's pretty impressive to be honest um immediate impressions of Road manners it's not a a wallowy car like the old 4x4s of of old it's it feels really planted so let's kind of have a have a see how it is up here but I think this is going to be a very pleasant day what a fantastic day to do test drives as well so this uh this 2 L engine's twin turbocharged uh about 280 brake and and you get the big saving in weight over the 3 l which was in the old car and a lot of urgency you don't get really any lag um and it kind of pulls away really really nicely um I'm just going to drop it into the sport mode which should just sharpen the throttle uh response up a little bit and yeah it it's um it certainly makes good progress the other thing to bear in mind about this car it is a proper Range Rover so it's got the terrain response system so you've got the ability to set all the various uh suspension ride height throttle mapping settings through mud and ruts and uh snow mode was always my favorite that was a fantastic mode us to deaden the throttle off so that you could drive in really really slippy conditions so it is a proper 4x4 and I like it a lot now the exterior styling might divide some opinion um certainly from the rear I think you're either going to love it or hate it it's much better in the flesh than it is in the in the photographs and and I think it's one of those cars I didn't like the original Discovery when it first came out the sorry disco 3 when it first came out I thought the sort of asymmetric tailgate was a bit a bit awkward but I grew to love it and I think you do the same here now you may well recognize this road this is one of my favorite reviewing roads and it's a really really good bit of tarmac to to just feel what the road manners are like in this car I would love to take it off-road but sadly that's not going to be possible today um but yeah know it's um it certainly does have a very nice Road presence about it now as you know I recently took the Range Rover Autobiography to cornal for the weekend and we did the review on that and I had an awful lot of tech on there um talking to the guys from Land Rover quite interestingly in this model cuz it does have an awful lot of family DNA it feels very Range Rover esque but there are some differentiators between the Range Rover and the discovery so there are some options that you can't get on this so in the Range Rover they have a dynamic driving mode available that's not available uh in Discovery 5 uh Deployable side steps soft closed doors those types of options are only available in the Range Rover to try and kind of elevate Range Rover to a higher place because you know I guess if you went back I don't know 5 10 years there was this huge step between Land Rover and then Range Rover and now it the the kind of differentiation is a bit more blurred because you've got Range Rover Range Rover Sport Discovery Discovery Sport and it starts to be a bit a bit confusing um so I quite like that you know really stick Range Rover out there cuz for me they still are very very special cars and probably the best SUVs you can buy um but I'm very impressed with this car so far considering I've waited so long to drive it and really wanted to to feel what it's like it it just has the road manners of a much smaller car but massively competent in terms of size uh and that's what I really liked about our one you could do anything with it we went skiing with seven people in a roof box um we towed trailers um I'm guessing I'm going to check here now with my range My Land Rover experts that next to me it's 3 and 1/2 ton Towing weight yeah yeah still so it's still 3 and 1/2 ton uh Towing weight which is as much as you can get in a car anyway um so brilliant for horse boxes boats Caravans um and the the feature at the back which is really cool is that you can basically adjust the the right height of the rear suspension up and down for when you're hitching up your uh your trailer which is massively lazy cuz I just used to um wind the wheel on the on the trailer but it's much better if you just got a button to do it while we're on the subject of Towing that's probably a good point about these two engine sizes the 2 L and 3 l so this 2 L is obviously it's lighter um it's probably aimed at someone who's perhaps really wanting to do the school run and have lots of kids in the back and andless shift big weights around or do lots of Towing so it' be perfect for them uh and then you know the more power of the 3 l would probably be for someone who's going to exploit this car more for what it was designed to do so I quite I quite like that that option in those two um but it's just a really really comfy car I can't really say much more than that it's the ride quality is excellent um the road manners we're just getting to a little bit more of a bit of twisty Road here so we can kind of just feel what it's like through the corners um but it it just has this very very lovely road presence very lovely comfortable driving position massive amount of visibility again because it's a big car in the back you you may be worry about that but the the door mirrors are a really big lots and lots of visibility uh and it just has a really nice way about it you could you could cover some some ground in this really really easily um I've just noticed this car how how how little miles it's got It's got 133 mil on the clock yeah okay it's a new car um so I'm not going to to push it but let's just see what it's like through this through this little Bend here it just I didn't really have to break too much for that it's got a nice pull away obviously that bike wants to go a little bit faster than I do today which is all good by me um but yeah really really impressive um road holding I have to say I mean I know Land Rover sold a lot of the old Discovery 3 and then the Step Up from Discovery 3 to Discovery 4 for me was massive the engine was such a better engine in Disco 4 um we didn't have a disco 4 we went from disco to Range Rover Sport um but this again is a is another another step up in terms of refinement and um uh and the engine this engine's really really got some go it's quite impressive so in the range there's also a 3 l petrol supercharged engine um which I find quite interesting I don't know in the UK I don't know why you would want to buy one of those when you've got such competent diesels but maybe more for the American Market maybe also there's an awful lot of sort of negative press around diesels and stuff at the moment but that that's an option um and again this differentiation thing not that this is really the kind of car you would probably do it to but um you won't see uh special vehicle operations getting hold of one of these uh and breathing on it because that's again set aside for the Range Rover uh family uh which is a shame although we were just having a chat I think that special vehicle operations really do need to get hold of an evoke cuz I reckon that would look absolutely brilliant if it had a a proper um petrol supercharged monster engine stuck underneath it that be fantastic so we we're kind of coming towards the end of of this uh short review um I would love to spend more time in this car um I'd certainly think about this car uh in terms of of a really practical if you've got a family and a dog and a horse and you want to move stuff around this is this is just such a great option as a family car and that's certainly what we loved about ours um it as I said it doesn't feel too big to drive which is which
