Welcome to Alphabet City: A Glimpse into Stadia's Future on Android TV
We are joined today by your guide, Aya's Akhtar, and we are thrilled to have you as our amazing audience. It seems like Stadia is coming to Android TV with Android R in 2020, according to a new report by XDA-Developers. The site received a roadmap for Android TV from an anonymous source who claims they obtained this information at the International Broadcasting Convention.
The paid version of Stadia is set to launch in November, allowing users to play games through the cloud on their TVs. To do so, users will need a Chromecast Ultra and the Stadia controller at launch. Additionally, the Pixel 3, 3a, and XL versions of tablets running Chrome OS or a computer running a recent version of the Chrome browser will also be compatible with Stadia. It's worth noting that the Pixel 4 is expected to join this list when it becomes official on October 15th.
The most important aspect of Stadia is your broadband connection. To get 720p gameplay at 60fps with stereo sound, users will need at least 10 megabits per second. However, if they can pull 35 megabits per second, they can enjoy 4K HDR video at 60fps with 5.1 surround sound. The roadmap also mentions a hero device that is advancing next-gen smart home UX and Android TV, leaving many to wonder which company will be building it.
Currently, the top Android TV boxes include the Shield TV, and rumors suggest that Nvidia is working on new versions of the Shield TV, which should be released soon. Another high-profile Android TV box is the Google Nexus player, but unfortunately, it's been discontinued. Google has not even made an attempt to produce an Android TV device, and at last year's Google I/O event, there was a very sad little Android TV section that only featured a few TVs with Android built-in.
Now, let's talk about the Chromecast Ultra, which is the hardware needed to play Stadia on your TV. This device costs $70 and doesn't do much on its own; you'll always need another device to feed it content. For comparison, if you spend $40, you get the Roku Premier, which can output 4K video like the Chromecast Ultra. However, unlike the Chromecast Ultra, the Roku Premier comes with a remote and its own OS, offering tons of TV apps.
In our experience, Android TV works well, although it does lag behind compared to other streaming services. The roadmap mentions Google's goal of having 8,000 to 10,000 apps available in 2021, which is a significant improvement over the current state of affairs. Interestingly, Roku had more than 4,500 apps as of January 2017 on their site, and they claim that their streamers have access to over half a million movies and TV episodes.
As we count down to Google's Pixel 4 launch event on October 15th, we'll be trying our best to be there in person and test out all the new features. We'd love for you to join us and share your thoughts on what to expect from this event. Will it show off the uses of motion sense and possibly assistant improvements? Could it reveal more about pricing that could make the Pixel 4 more affordable, which would undoubtedly help with sales?
Additionally, we'll be checking out Google Lens translation from the last app, as they recently confirmed that users with similar facial features can unlock their phone. This is an exciting development in terms of biometric authentication and personalization.
Finally, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has written in to share their thoughts on Alphabet City. If you've enjoyed your stay with us, please like and subscribe for more content. We're Aya's Akhtar, and we'll see you online!
