on a vertical folding phone and I have to admit I kind of like it Samsung sent me the device to use for a very limited time but I figured I would try to do a complete walkthrough on it for you guys now if you're not familiar to fully walk through those channels where I try to go through every single feature I possibly can on a new device so that you guys are better prepared should you be in the market to actually go buy one with that said there's a lot to go through so let's get started with the hardware firstly as I'm sure you've noticed it folds it has a six point seven inch 21.9 by nine F HD Plus resolution Infinity flex display as Samsung is calling it that bends in not quite but pretty darn close to half now you probably didn't notice though is that for the first time on a folding phone this screen is made out of an ultra-thin glass instead of plastic this has a number of benefits and is the future of the affordable industry in my mind and I said as much in the last episode of decoder that I'll link to here but for this phone the pros and cons are as follows for the up sides that screen is much less likely to scratch since glass is better at that than plastic it'll also have more clarity to show the flexible display underneath it and it's just so much nicer to type on and feel so much more solid and familiar the downside really is that well glass can shatter but the way I see it on this phone at least is that the screen is only on the inside and so dropping an even open you're still in the same boat as every other phone you would be using that doesn't fold thinking of the folding aspect of this little guy the hinge they used is an upgraded version of the one on the fold now it has a new system of bristles Samsung calls it sweeper tech that stop debris from getting in an issue that the old original fold had if you remember that before they rereleased it and it uses a double cam setup what that means to you and I though basically is the fact that it feels really solid honestly and it allows you to set the screen in any number of positions and it'll lock they're sort of kind of like your laptop does now Samsung actually worked with Google and added some UI changes to the phone to take advantage of these things basically allowing for it to split the screen when recognized it's being used in this way for things like the camera duo video calls to different apps split-screen etc on the outside there is a very small 1.1 inch super amled 300 by a hundred and twelve resolution screen that is really meant for notifications on it you can see the time your alarms it can be used as a very tiny selfie camera and you can check your notification icons at a glance if you tap on any of those notifications though it'll give you more info in a stock ticker kind of a way that honestly I just tap that icon and then open the phone to be brought into that app and see the message as far as the functionality of the outside screen it reminds me a bit of the fold in that I thought I'd use the outside screen more but ended up just opening the phone most of the time for what I wanted to use it for so I don't mind it here either also there's something very nostalgic about opening a phone to use it and then closing in sort of kinetic I'm done for now way that feels kind of good oh and as far as slamming it close when angry on a phone call 100% don't do that the reason is that opening and closing this thing isn't super easy the razor is also just as awkward now I got used to it and it became slightly more natural but yeah it's it's not as easy as you imagine just because of the size and weight of all of these devices they're not a 2000s flip phone now a sizzling angry clothes more doable here in the States the Z flip comes in two colors mirror purple which is my favorite and mirror black outside the u.s. there are some markets that will also be getting a mirror of gold as well though continuing to move around the device we have the volume rocker and then we have our power button Bigsby button that's also a fingerprint scanner on the right on the Left we have our SIM card tray at the top we have nothing and we have a mono speaker and USB C port at the bottom that is capable of Qualcomm quick charge 2.0 and Samsung's adapted fast charging tech professor wired charging of the 3300 milliamp dual battery setup inside the device also supports qi wireless charging and even reverse wireless charging to charge other devices like these galaxy buds here you just have to make sure that you put it on the bottom half of the phone instead of the top when it's closed by the way now under the hood we have eight gigs of ram 256 gigs of storage in a quote seven nanometer 64-bit octa-core processor which I opened CPU info and it happens to be a qualcomm snapdragon 855 plus in the unit that i have at least for anyone curious for connectivity we have NFC gps LTE cat 16 and bluetooth 5.0 with the ability to have up to two devices connected to the z flip and receive audio simultaneously for security we have that fingerprint sensor on the power button on the right as i mentioned as well as samsung's facial recognition using the front camera speaking that from camera we have a front-facing punch hole 10 megapixel f 2.4 aperture 80 degree field of view camera with 1.2 2 micron sized pixels on the back we have 2 cameras an ultra wide 123 degree field of view f 2.2 camera with 1.1 2 micron sized pixels and here are some sample shots that I took with that we also have a 12 megapixel PDA F F 1.8 more standard 78 degree field of view camera with 1.4 micron sized pixels and here are some shots with that as well I mean in the camera modes on the device we have our normal photo mode that I used to take those photos with then we also have video and it can shoot 4k up to 60 frames per second there's a new mode called single take which is also on the new S 20 series of devices and basically what it does is you push the button and it will record for 10 seconds after that it will try to create a collection of photos and videos and boomerangs and time lapses and all this stuff and put it all automatically in your gallery from those 10 seconds going into the more section in the camera we have Bigsby vision which is basically their competitor to Google lens that allows you to search visually in the world we have AR zone which is their collection of augmented reality apps like doodling in your physical space using emoji etc we have promo which allows you to change settings like ISO shutter speed and everything manually for the camera we also have a pro video mode that does the same thing but for video we also have panorama mode which is available on most cameras nowadays but it allows you to take a much wider shot by stitching a bunch together we have food mode which essentially in my mind just turns up the saturation and allows you to add bouquet we have night mode which is a long exposure shot that lets you take better photos in the dark if you want more info on how that works I actually did a decoder episode which I'll link to here we have live focus mode which allows you to focus on a subject and blur out the background and then you can after the fact change how much that blur is we also have an option for that for video as well now we have slow-motion which allows you to capture video and slow it down and we have super slow motion which does the same but that even even slower rate and finally we have hyperlapse theirs allows you to record a video and it plays back sped up for software we're running Android 10 with Samsung's own custom UI on top called 1 UI 2.1 and it runs pretty smooth but since it's basically the same as it is on every Samsung phone besides those added features for the split screen that I already mentioned we won't dive into it further here the Samsung Galaxy Z flip is available starting now and it retails for 1380 dollars and that sounds like a lot of money because it is but considering the razor was just released and it costs $1500 and the original Galaxy fold was $2,000 maybe it's a better deal now truth is I'm not the demographic for this type of phone I personally haven't too much of a nerd and would rather have a phone that folds out into a tablet size as to me that's more useful or I'd rather just not have the folding part of the phone and get say an s2000 which has better specs for example but firstly that doesn't mean that there isn't a demographic for this device anymore fashion-forward person who cares less about specs and
