Talking Cars with Consumer Reports #54 - Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang _ Consumer Reports

**The TLX: A Great Car, But Is it Good Enough?**

Speed is a crucial aspect of any car's performance, and many drivers would agree that having a good nine-speed transmission is essential. However, when it comes to the TLX, it seems like no one can quite get it right yet. The engine starts slowly, much like a hole in traffic, and smacks you with its power once it's fully revved up. It's almost as if the car is waiting for permission to unleash its full potential.

But what really sets the TLX apart from other vehicles? For one, it compares favorably to some of the top contenders in its class, such as the BMW 320i and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The four-cylinder model can be had for around $36,000, which is a significant amount of money, but it's still thousands less than the three Series or C-Class. In terms of reliability, the TLX has had some mixed results in recent years, so it's hard to say whether it's a good choice over its German counterparts.

In comparison to other vehicles, the TLX seems like a solid option for those who want a car that drives well and looks good. It's quiet, comfortable, and features a nice interior. However, when compared to the likes of the BMW 320i or Mercedes-Benz C-Class, it feels somewhat ordinary. The TLX is an okay car, but it doesn't quite stand out from the crowd.

**The Great Debate: V6 vs Four-Cylinder**

When it comes to deciding between a V6 and four-cylinder engine, there are pros and cons to each option. The V6 offers more power and torque, making it a great choice for those who want to accelerate quickly. However, this also means that the car may feel heavier and less responsive. On the other hand, the four-cylinder engine is lighter and more fuel-efficient, but may lack the oomph of its bigger sibling.

In terms of reliability, both options have their strengths and weaknesses. The V6 has had some issues in recent years, while the four-cylinder has been relatively trouble-free. However, when it comes to the TLX, it's hard to say whether one engine is significantly better than the other.

Ultimately, the decision between a V6 and four-cylinder engine comes down to personal preference. If you want a car that drives well and looks good, but doesn't need to accelerate like a rocket ship, the four-cylinder may be the way to go. However, if you're looking for more power and torque, the V6 is definitely worth considering.

**A New Player in Town: The Audi Q5**

In recent years, there has been a new player on the scene that's shaking things up in the luxury SUV market: the Audi Q5. This car offers a lot of what the TLX does, but with some key differences. For one, it's more established when it comes to reliability, and it's definitely worth considering.

One of the main advantages of the Q5 is its design. It's sleek and sophisticated, both inside and out. The interior is comfortable and feature-rich, making it a great choice for those who want a luxury SUV that can handle daily driving with ease. Plus, the Q5 has some impressive safety features, including a 360-degree camera system.

Another major advantage of the Q5 is its reliability record. Audi has made significant strides in recent years to improve its cars' reliability, and the Q5 is no exception. In fact, it's considered one of the most reliable luxury SUVs on the market.

**The GLA and Discovery Sport: Alternative Options**

For those who are looking for a small luxury SUV but don't want to go with the TLX or Audi Q5, there are some other options worth considering. The GLA is a solid choice, despite its boxy design. It's reliable, comfortable, and features all the tech you'd expect from a modern car.

The Discovery Sport is another option that's definitely worth looking at. It offers a lot of what the TLX does, but with some key differences. For one, it's more spacious and practical than the TLX, making it a great choice for families or those who need to haul a lot of gear.

One thing to keep in mind when considering the Discovery Sport is that it has run-flat tires, which can be a major drawback for some drivers. However, this also means that you don't have to worry about punctures or flats, making it a great choice for those who are always on the go.

**The BMW X3: A Reliable Choice**

For those who want a small luxury SUV but aren't sure what to choose, the BMW X3 is definitely worth considering. It's reliable, comfortable, and features all the tech you'd expect from a modern car. Plus, it has some impressive safety features, including lane departure warning and blind spot detection.

One of the main advantages of the X3 is its reliability record. BMW has made significant strides in recent years to improve its cars' reliability, and the X3 is no exception. In fact, it's considered one of the most reliable luxury SUVs on the market.

Overall, the X3 is a solid choice for those who want a small luxury SUV that can handle daily driving with ease. It may not be as spacious or practical as some other options, but it more than makes up for it in terms of reliability and performance.

**The TLX: A Great Car, But Is It Good Enough?**

In the end, the TLX is a great car, but whether or not it's good enough ultimately depends on what you're looking for in a vehicle. If you want a car that drives well and looks good, but doesn't need to accelerate like a rocket ship, the four-cylinder may be the way to go. However, if you're looking for more power and torque, the V6 is definitely worth considering.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference. Do you value reliability and practicality above all else? Or do you want a car that can handle daily driving with ease, but still offer some excitement behind the wheel? Whatever your choice, the TLX is definitely worth considering.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enon this show we're talking American Muscle with the new Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger we also discuss the Acura TLX next on talking cars hi there and welcome to talking cars with Consumer Reports I'm Tom mutchler I'm Gabe shenhar and I'm Jake Fisher one of our biggest fans asked me he had a request on Twitter so I think we can do this for him I would like an episode solely dedicated to the shishi Mirage bring shinhar oh so that's wonderful that's not that's not here's the answer that's no we're we're not going to do that instead we want to talk muscle cars today what do we got gab well we got really interesting stuff here we have the new Mustang um fresh uh redesigned for 2015 and we have uh another icon uh which is the Dodge Challenger yeah you know the Challenger it's they've been making this car since 09 and they keep evolving the car it keeps getting better it does so um I made a lot of internet friends when we initially tested the vehicle it was like how to win friends and influence you really so when they first came out with this vehicle I mean it was it kind of drove like a truck it really did I had a lot of power but the handling was not there it was not impressive and I think um I basically said it was kind of like a Dodge Ram you know it's got a big V8 rear wheel drive um doesn't really handle but it's f pass in a straight line and rides well which it was true which actually um it's kind of a fun car I mean if you want to cruise around but it certainly was never a sports car and um yeah so you know there was you know the the Mopar forums were a little unhappy with me but but the point is is that the car is a it still is a cruiser I mean it is not the car you necessarily want to go take in an autocross this is not the tight Nimble little I'm not going to chase I'm not going to chase a Porsche Boxer through tail the dragon with this no but you might actually enjoy driving this thing day to day more than those Vehicles all because it was actually fun car and even the one that you know I poked fun of was a great car to go cruise around in and was really enjoyable now this car I mean they've dialed it up so sure it's fast sure it's still quiet and it's still comfortable but it drives a whole lot better um the steering is a whole lot better I mean it's come a long way and the interior has gotten much better too I mean it was kind of you know you know you're not yourself on flash anymore no that that that that era CH of cars just but here's the rub uh in 09 it was a nice Cruiser it looked good it was had this kind of retro feel about it and it's not retro anymore but no no it's tot totally modern now no but uh wait let me finish that thought I mean now they wanted to evolve the car and you said it and I think by evolving the car trying to make it more sporty they kind of the car now Falls between the cracks because it rides more stiffly and uh I mean it it's never going to be a sports car so you actually compromised the strength of the car which was like you know it was a really nice kind of Cruiser fast Cruiser that's what it was about now it's not it's you think I think it's not as quiet I think it rides stiffer the shifter and the clutch are heavy uh it's just not enjoyable to drive anymore gosh man I'm just not there you know this is not my type of car I mean let's let's just if that's not obvious I mean it's either I don't know if it's the car or the times because when you look at in the context of this mustang it's the Mustang is so has so much wider repertoire as a car don't think because I mean the the Mustang is is you can't just call it a muscle car anymore it's more of a real sports car now but there's the thing I don't think the same guy is going to shop these two cars I think it's so tempting well we did it it's so tempting to talk about them together yeah I mean completely different Market segment it's a whole Trio of muscle cor I mean is this the Camaro the Mustang and the challenge I I think I could put this in perspective and kind of resolve this and basically what I like to say is I disagree with both of you and you're both completely wrong and and here's why because I agree that we're wrong hear hear me out so first of all with the Challenger no sure it's a little bit stiffer and just a little bit but you know what it's still easy car I I took it with the weekend I had my kids in the back it was an easy car to drive every day and and we're you know I mean think about you know in the lot we've had the 911 and the Corvette and these cars are like great if you want to go to the nurburg ring or track but I mean these cars do great on you this car does not they're also great if you're a skinny German you know this you weigh 150 pounds no it's great with the m McDonald's drive-through but I think I think I think what what're G Gabe to your point I think we're getting a little bit Jaded by this one wonderful vehicle over here in the corner which is this mustang which either that or or maybe I got old you know I'm going to go with that but and my kids don't fit in the back like your kids oh my kids are are yeah they're they're fun kids are more comp but I mean the the the thing about the Mustang is it's come the other way so I mean the Mustang was a real sports car I mean the Mustang You know despite his Dimensions is a car that you could put an autocross this was a sports car but what they did was they went and did what the Challenger did too this is a car that is quiet it's refined it gots all those other stuff too without giving up that sporty nature so so now it almost become makes the Challenger a little bit redundant because you know I'm not so sure I'm not sure if it's right to say that they not going to be cross shopping because I think that CH that that Mustang can be your everyday driving car complet oh yeah yeah yeah no which which it used to be you know where at 911 and a and a box door a came really I think there's different goals here I mean I drive the mustag and this is a great compliment to it I think of it as a budget bmw4 Series Coupe I think it's that totally right I think it's that good but the Challenger I'm not going to deny that the guy buying that thing he is basically putting on a costume he is saying and in a good way you know why make boring car choices I want to have a retro car it sounds good it looks good I mean my God you pull up in that Sublime green Challenger I mean it's a total costume you're totally right I mean but to say they're not going to be cross shopped with two icons of Americana I mean they are going to be I the guy who buys it is going to buy that car cuz he likes the way he looks he likes classic mop par I think and I think that's a narrower shopping band than that Mustang let's go back to what you just said about uh mentioning the BMW and that ties into what I just said before with the wide W wider repertoire of the Mustang nowadays I mean it can be a a totally civilized car for everyday driving I mean I drive that car the shifter the clutch the handing I mean it's so good I mean here I drive I drive the Challenger I put in second gear I throw it in six and I'm done with it here you just shift for the joy of Shifting with a Mustang you you want to dance with the Mustang it's not exactly dance chall you go straight it's no longer just a muscle car it's no longer just fast and straight line the car the Mustang can be compared to a two Series BMW or four Series BMW now it's a much more well-rounded kind of a car so other than the room in the back it's a totally more you're exactly right and and I mean the Mustang it's the supermodel that also really cooks well you know so I mean you're not going to be giving up what you get in that Challenger if you get that Mustang you're to get that everyday liability and and quietness and all that stuff and and I I will take you know disagree with you about the forest areas because I would take the Mustang over the four Series right now I mean they've gotten soft and the Mustang I think that steer better it does it's pretty amazing now uh earlier when uh in the last episode someone asked us to review a um if if we had a Scat Pack which sadly we don't we don't Scat Pack a 6.4 L 485 horsepower sadly we only have the 375 horsepower I don't know if sadly why did you why did you us picking because being customer serviceat they all want hellcats right they all they all dream of hellcats are we allowed to swear in the podcast because we just said hellat I just want to throw that out there we'll get believe that in post so anyway um so all of uh pretty much the vast majority of the vast majority of Challengers are V6 automatics yeah but they whipped with this with the with the hell out of V8 it's the RT plus which is exactly like this one I'm going to totally disagree with you again because I've been reading Motor Trend and Ro rodent track and all of the Buff books I think 90% of them are hellcats actually I don't think they make any v6s because I have never seen one reviewed or scat or the scatback which I've seen on in the buff magazines as well but anyway real real people uh out there okay buy these buy cars so RT plus 41 $42,000 this is what people drive and it's yeah you're not going to notice the extra 24 horsepower whatever it is let's let's talk more about what people drive um a question another question that we didn't quite cover in the last show you guys didn't really answer e79 eternal's question could you please speak more about what kind of mechanical problems the GT86 twins are suffering from first we got to decipher yeah we got to decipher GT86 that's the Canan FRS and the sub BRZ what's up with them they don't stay together they don't they have reliability issues so um took took a look at some of some of the issues and um there's a bunch of issues going on with that um there's the tail lights are filling with water uh the power windows aren't working necessarily um go don't go back back up fuel pumps they had a big problem with fuel pumps where they would make a uh a squeaking noise and then eventually fail um the list goes on the interior mirrors that were falling off the exterior miror falling off the engine runs rough and actually we had that with our car too and there was a there was an update on that so it's been a whole bunch of different issues and and the radio the radio is a kind of a mess but the radio's had some issues too with the GPS isn't picking up and and such so a bunch of different issues um you know with Subaru and Toyota I mean they do understand quality hopefully they're going to work out these issues there are you know on our site now we do list the the service bulletins and ex warranties and you can read about those on our site um and they know about these issues they have created some updates hopefully they're going to fix those problems yep the car does have issues next question from Mr nugget face I can't take Tom I I can't take Tom seriously as a reviewer he is forever negative about nearly every vehicle again all that matters in life is age so Mr nugget face so I just oh sorry I'm so sad I'm just gonna no no I mean look it's uh it's no there there's more to a car than dashboard Plastics actually I'm going to say I'm GNA here's what I'm going to say I can't take Mr McNugget face seriously as a YouTube troll he is only focusing on what I feel about dashboard Plastics there's a lot more to these cars both have nice Plastics so which that's important uh from apples So Soft apples apples apples can you tell us your opinion on the TLX and not compare it to an accord which we will anyway compare it to the is and Q50 and 3 Series please thanks well that's a very timely question because I just drove in this morning with the TLX V6 yeah did you did you take a pair of tweezers to figure figure out which gear you're in because if you push it and you rotate it you could get into drive well I'll tell you what happened I I backed out of my driveway so you do this motion this is the V6 with the nine-speed automatic right nine-speed automatic and the shifter that uh is a non- shifter just a bunch of buttons it reminds me of those childhood games you know when when you're like one and a half and you would have the square goes in the Square Circle goes in the that's right you take the circle you put the circle in the circle and you throw in the E bra in the middle there and the uh yeah so uh from reverse I just hit the e bra instead of Drive oh that's good yeah so uh that shifter is a deal breaker for that car well the transmission is no great shakes either that N speed no one can it doesn't seem like anyone can make a good nine speed yet right and the start stop is the slowest start stop I mean I'm like you're looking for a a hole in traffic to jump in and I'm already like Full Throttle but the engine hasn't turned on no and then when it turns on it smacks you you know it's such a you know I like get smacked in the back of the head with the head I think you as me the other day uh would you buy the V6 TLX uh over the four cylinder I did I wouldn't do it I'd stay with a four cylinder let's back up and talk about the car as a bigger hole rather than the V6 versus four-cylinder question what do you think about so compared to the Accord well let's compare it to the Q50 and the is let let a load a question because compar to most Vehicles the compare to an is or Q50 they're pretty nice Mazda 3 is pretty nice compared to a is or Q50 so it's like if you're going to choose one of the vehic that are not good like the is 250 all-wheel drive the the mainstream model or the uh the Q50 you know what go go enjoy a TLX well let's be crazy and actually compare it to a car that's good what about a three series what about a what about a Mercedes cclass oh it's a whole different bowl game I mean the three series and C-Class are they're more expensive cars they're 10 grand more but you actually get what you pay for here yeah now this car becomes it's it's all about context and it becomes extremely difficult to explain so I will try somehow to do it in the time we have left um the the four cylinder is about $36,000 uh 36 Grand will buy me a Ford Fusion which is very nice Ford Fusion which is a better driving car better riding car a quieter car um if I need the prestige name yeah it's 10 grand less than the three Series in the C-Class it doesn't drive as well the interior isn't as nice I don't know if Acura reliabilities you know they've been kind of mixed right now so you can't just say go buy the Acura instead of the German cars because it will be better why don't you buy a 320i so you're a little down on power in the three series but you're a comparable price yeah also you know with with the money BMW and Mercedes thrown into leases you know that that that wrinkles that that makes it even more sure if you lease it you're not so worried about uh paying out of warranty repairs right but my biggest my the biggest thought I I have is I drive it and I'm boarded it just feels ordinary and I think when you're buying an electri car it shouldn't feel ordinary and that's kind of a drag munde kind of D it's an okay car you know and acura's had a run of not so great cars but yeah you know um next question my aunt wants to buy a car and I need help she misses her Mercedes ml's SUV height but and she now wants a small luxury SUV she was looking at a gla because the GLK is two boxy ugly I'm trying to convince her to wait a year or two till they design GE okay she was also looking at a discovery sport in a BMW X3 what would you suggest what else is there in the small SUV I don't know if I'm the right person to ask because I have an X3 at home so she doesn't like the Run Flats I I I I understand thatat uh well in that case how about an Audi Q5 I was actually thinking of a Q3 yeah Q3 is just out so but I think the Q5 is more uh more established in terms of reliability record I think it's a more of a no-brainer MH your thoughts totally agree totally agree Q5 or X X3 would be the way to go and um you know how he is doing really well in terms of reliability these days so Q5 I think should be very happy that's true I think a q Q5 is actually by now a pretty safe Choice quite a reliable Choice a programming note for the last couple months we've been doing talking cars on a weekly basis it's been fun we've learned it's a lot of work to do talking cars on a weekly basis so we're going to cut back to once every two weeks hopefully at some point we'll be able to go back to weekly in the meantime if you need to get your fix go to consumerreports.org talking cars there you can participate in the Forum with other fans and you can see back episodes as always it's a pleasure we'll see you next timeon this show we're talking American Muscle with the new Ford hopefully they're going to work out these issues there are you know on our site now we do list the the service bulletins and ex warranties and you can read about those on our site um and they know about these issues they have created some updates hopefully they're going to fix those problems yep the car does have issues next question from Mr nugget face I can't take Tom I I can't take Tom seriously as a reviewer he is forever negative about nearly every vehicle again all that matters in life is age so Mr nugget face so I just oh sorry I'm so sad I'm just gonna no no I mean look it's uh it's no there there's more to a car than dashboard Plastics actually I'm going to say I'm GNA here's what I'm going to say I can't take Mr McNugget face seriously as a YouTube troll he is only focusing on what I feel about dashboard Plastics there's a lot more to these cars both have nice Plastics so which that's important uh from apples So Soft apples apples apples can you tell us your opinion on the TLX and not compare it to an accord which we will anyway compare it to the is and Q50 and 3 Series please thanks well that's a very timely question because I just drove in this morning with the TLX V6 yeah did you did you take a pair of tweezers to figure figure out which gear you're in because if you push it and you rotate it you could get into drive well I'll tell you what happened I I backed out of my driveway so you do this motion this is the V6 with the nine-speed automatic right nine-speed automatic and the shifter that uh is a non- shifter just a bunch of buttons it reminds me of those childhood games you know when when you're like one and a half and you would have the square goes in the Square Circle goes in the that's right you take the circle you put the circle in the circle and you throw in the E bra in the middle there and the uh yeah so uh from reverse I just hit the e bra instead of Drive oh that's good yeah so uh that shifter is a deal breaker for that car well the transmission is no great shakes either that N speed no one can it doesn't seem like anyone can make a good nine speed yet right and the start stop is the slowest start stop I mean I'm like you're looking for a a hole in traffic to jump in and I'm already like Full Throttle but the engine hasn't turned on no and then when it turns on it smacks you you know it's such a you know I like get smacked in the back of the head with the head I think you as me the other day uh would you buy the V6 TLX uh over the four cylinder I did I wouldn't do it I'd stay with a four cylinder let's back up and talk about the car as a bigger hole rather than the V6 versus four-cylinder question what do you think about so compared to the Accord well let's compare it to the Q50 and the is let let a load a question because compar to most Vehicles the compare to an is or Q50 they're pretty nice Mazda 3 is pretty nice compared to a is or Q50 so it's like if you're going to choose one of the vehic that are not good like the is 250 all-wheel drive the the mainstream model or the uh the Q50 you know what go go enjoy a TLX well let's be crazy and actually compare it to a car that's good what about a three series what about a what about a Mercedes cclass oh it's a whole different bowl game I mean the three series and C-Class are they're more expensive cars they're 10 grand more but you actually get what you pay for here yeah now this car becomes it's it's all about context and it becomes extremely difficult to explain so I will try somehow to do it in the time we have left um the the four cylinder is about $36,000 uh 36 Grand will buy me a Ford Fusion which is very nice Ford Fusion which is a better driving car better riding car a quieter car um if I need the prestige name yeah it's 10 grand less than the three Series in the C-Class it doesn't drive as well the interior isn't as nice I don't know if Acura reliabilities you know they've been kind of mixed right now so you can't just say go buy the Acura instead of the German cars because it will be better why don't you buy a 320i so you're a little down on power in the three series but you're a comparable price yeah also you know with with the money BMW and Mercedes thrown into leases you know that that that wrinkles that that makes it even more sure if you lease it you're not so worried about uh paying out of warranty repairs right but my biggest my the biggest thought I I have is I drive it and I'm boarded it just feels ordinary and I think when you're buying an electri car it shouldn't feel ordinary and that's kind of a drag munde kind of D it's an okay car you know and acura's had a run of not so great cars but yeah you know um next question my aunt wants to buy a car and I need help she misses her Mercedes ml's SUV height but and she now wants a small luxury SUV she was looking at a gla because the GLK is two boxy ugly I'm trying to convince her to wait a year or two till they design GE okay she was also looking at a discovery sport in a BMW X3 what would you suggest what else is there in the small SUV I don't know if I'm the right person to ask because I have an X3 at home so she doesn't like the Run Flats I I I I understand thatat uh well in that case how about an Audi Q5 I was actually thinking of a Q3 yeah Q3 is just out so but I think the Q5 is more uh more established in terms of reliability record I think it's a more of a no-brainer MH your thoughts totally agree totally agree Q5 or X X3 would be the way to go and um you know how he is doing really well in terms of reliability these days so Q5 I think should be very happy that's true I think a q Q5 is actually by now a pretty safe Choice quite a reliable Choice a programming note for the last couple months we've been doing talking cars on a weekly basis it's been fun we've learned it's a lot of work to do talking cars on a weekly basis so we're going to cut back to once every two weeks hopefully at some point we'll be able to go back to weekly in the meantime if you need to get your fix go to consumerreports.org talking cars there you can participate in the Forum with other fans and you can see back episodes as always it's a pleasure we'll see you next time\n"
