The Secret To Making The PERFECT Ham

**How to Prepare and Glaze a Spiral Ham**

When it comes to preparing a spiral ham, there are several steps that can make all the difference in achieving a deliciously tender and flavorful dish. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of creating an environment for the ham to cook, adding aromatics and flavor, and finally glazing it with a sweet and tangy mixture.

To begin, preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating up, prepare your casserole dish by laying down some sliced oranges, cloves, onions, cinnamon, and a splash of fruit juice or chicken broth at the bottom of the pan. This creates an environment that will help keep the ham moist while it cooks. The oranges add a burst of citrus flavor, while the spices provide warmth and depth to the dish.

Next, place the spiral ham on a wire rack over the prepared casserole dish. This elevation helps prevent the ham from boiling in its own juices, allowing for even cooking and steaming instead. Now it's time to season the ham with your favorite barbecue seasoning, such as Killer Hogs' BBQ rub. A light layer of this spice blend will add a nice smoky flavor to the outside of the ham.

To make the glaze, start by melting half a stick of butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Next, add the juice of one orange, followed by some brown sugar, fruit preserves, and a splash of bourbon or other liquor (optional). If you prefer to keep your dish booze-free, simply omit this ingredient. The addition of orange zest will add an extra layer of citrus flavor to the glaze without the acidity.

Now it's time to combine the melted butter mixture with some honey and finally, 1/4 cup of fruit preserves. This sweet and tangy glaze is the perfect accompaniment to the ham, adding a burst of color and consistency to the dish. By simmering this glaze for about 5-10 minutes, it will thicken up and form a nice, sticky coating that will cling to the ham as it cooks.

As your oven reaches the desired temperature, place the spiral ham in the casserole dish, bone side down. Every 15 minutes or so, brush the ham with the prepared glaze, allowing it to absorb all of that delicious flavor. This process should take about 12-15 minutes per pound, depending on the size and type of ham you're using.

Finally, carve your spiral ham by laying it face down on a serving platter, bone side up. Use a sharp knife to carve around the bone, following its curved shape as you work your way around the entire ham. You can also garnish with some fresh kale leaves or cranberries for added festiveness and color.

**The Finishing Touches**

Before serving, take one final glance at your beautifully glazed spiral ham. If you're feeling extra festive, you might even consider adding a little extra glaze to each slice before serving. With its sweet, sticky coating and tender, flavorful meat, this dish is sure to impress your guests and become a new holiday tradition.
