The Evolution of the Evo: A Tuning Experience like No Other
As I sat down with my tuner, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. We were about to take on the task of tuning my Subaru Evo, and I was eager to see what we could achieve. The goal was to target closer to 28 psi, which would give us an extra three psi, and then make adjustments as needed to optimize performance.
The process began with a series of tests, including dyno runs and pull-ups on the curve. We wanted to get a better understanding of the car's capabilities and identify areas for improvement. The numbers started to come in, and I was thrilled to see that we were already making gains. With an extra 80 foot-pounds of torque from yesterday's testing, we were confident that we could make some significant progress.

My tuner made some adjustments to the D cell, taking away a bit of time to see if it would make the car pop on the dyno. lets me down it always sounds great it always pulls nice maybe not the most comfortable thing well maybe it's a little bit Bodi but you know I got respect for the shelves need a Sikh livery like this though what I really need is a Sikh dually like that need to get on that to car level down shifts are what get me I don't if you guys saw the instagrams story or not but we have a bunch of these left over phone cases from like the lzb max days so we marked it down to $5 and I signed a bunch of them and I'm trying to encourage you guys to take them like make something cool out of them because chances are they're like a lot of old phones if you don't have any more I don't want to just waste him thrown him out so link in the description got a whole box full I think I mentioned that we have to upgrade the fuel pump because the stock one maxes out I think somewhere around three hundred wheel and I wasn't as straightforward as we thought we thought it got to be like a 240 or like a new her evil reconnection just pull the fuel pump out right underneath the rear seat but the stupid Mitsubishi design on this has hard lines going from here over here so you can't pull the plate straight up like you would be able to on a newer Evo or a 240 so Alberto's not stoked we just had a hard time like looking our hands in there again the lines up but we both dropped the gas tank and now it's time for an upgraded fuel pump jet lag is definitely catching up to me a bit today I'm kind of getting a little sleepy whole tired since I've been up since so early I don't know if I told you guys that but I got up by 7 a.m. which is super early for me got some pub subs and I had to dart back home kind of funny it works out perfectly because ring people who make the video doorbell that we have on our the DW 400 is actually the most high flowing drop-in fuel pump on the market same one I got in the S 13 where I'm running 85 which you require much more fuel to make power on and this is great because it zv5 safe even though we're gonna run 93 if we want to do flex fuel down the road we're good to go if your fuel pump nerd and you want to read some of the specs and you don't feel like looking it up online you can just pause the video right now and you can read all about the DW 400 pump they're good to me I appreciate them I think we're gonna be okay on the stock injectors but I have some 1,200 CC injectors just in case we need them Alberto we've got power was it a stock fuel pump cool so it's a good thing we're upgrading it cuz that would not have made power look at that fancy little thing in there huh everything you ate this UVO 9 this chili boy and you know 11 even 12 you're 13 you know what the heck dude not yet and they're coming back dude do you read about it to compete with the new super cool install kit comes with a new strainer to secure this ugly looking cruddy thing look at that that's what power looks like dude you know that you know what it's all nice in there when you go back in the tank alright we're going to head off your kings performance you'll get the Evo tuned it's on the ground it runs it sounds pretty cool give it a quick little rev it sounds a little differently up then take I can feel that it's a little bit slightly bigger turbo doesn't really feel that much lag here but it does maybe the spools a tiny bit slower okay it's really important to have fresh gas when you're going to get your car tuned so the first thing we're gonna do is go put some fresh 93 in this thing I take that back I don't know if it's cuz it's a fresh rebuild or if it's just terrible spec so this term actually spools a lot better like faster than the other one it doesn't like fall out of spool either it's actually really cool I'll feel like a little fish through like a little quick spool pull so you can hear what I'm talking about still in boost is still in boost sick I don't know if I mentioned but I'm driving this car from Florida to Connecticut so I think I might try to rush and change these tires on these wheels even though I'm probably gonna change the tires and wheels again up there they're just super noisy and I think they need to be balanced because at ten pounds the car made 255 wheel is not bad we are on a Mustang diner right now all right we're having an issue where the car wouldn't get over spring pressure Alberta what was going on wait oh yeah that's what my skyline was supposed to be we could have been we could have been skittles brothers wild berry boost and sour skittles five degrees bark yeah boost controller needs to be set up I believe was 4 psi lower than the Archos spring pressure for it to actually work so we did that and now it went from 80s I'd the 2050s I didn't even know gestures telling me these stock you see use are really really advanced you can see all the stuff my computer you can even plug in a tablet you know that you can do a tablet - with AC and that's it he says it's almost like you can almost do not like a standalone yeah we'll probably do a standalone in this eventually but for now just keep it a simple yeah you still having issues getting the wife engaged to read write the one on the Dinos just like run my factory well not my factory but my innovate wideband and then try to reach you two tomorrow and get this thing safe it is now day two of the evo dyno day Alberto got here early welded in the o2 sensor for the factory for the aftermarket AFR gauge so we can monitor and it's still leaning out so we think injectors more fuel it doesn't make any sense because stock injectors on these cars are like what five 50s and normally people can get them up to like four hundred wheel so hopefully there's not like other weird stuff going on we're gonna head over to King's to the dyno Willy's there today doing stuff so we'll ease the same person's poopy by the way I just I don't know if we would it be we should go you got me some Girl Scout cookies some water the Evo and my wild berry friend but I don't love how I have to keep using the jump box to start you because my battery hasn't come in yet that's not cool Willy has the cleanest is three hundred midnight purple on some work sea air kwame's and white my kinda built and before we changed injectors I just really wanted to check and make sure moon is okay with like fuel pump fuel pressure etc can't check fuel pressure because it's still a stock to a pressure regulator but I didn't have Alberto check the fuel pressure voltage and it is it's kind of interesting on these cars it's like a dual voltage so it reads differently once the cars in boost but just revving it was only getting up to like ten point five and we need like that's solid 13 otherwise that fuel pumps can be lazy so he's gonna jump another wire and then we'll do some dyno pulls to see if that indeed was the problem that we just weren't getting enough voltage in the fuel out of 240 that's the first thing you always do is that a relay just to make sure that your fuel pumps doing the proper voltage because there's a lot of pull did drop out to 40s but I didn't think that was that big of a problem an Evo apparently it is alright so Alberto is applying power back to the fuel pump all right hit Alberto that makes a huge difference to the Mack imagine when the car actually needs fuel can you confirm with me right now that this makes absolutely no sense what we just did maybe so we just swapped out the injectors their stock ones are like 560 CCS and should absolutely not be leaning out with where we were at but we swap them out for some t-shirts 1200 cc big boys so I selected these tricks and I told him that eventually down the road maybe next year I might put the car in the 85 and run like a Garrett G 25 for somewhere in like the mid 400 so these twelve inner cc's will be great for that I wasn't gonna put him in until then but we put him in and the car just did a poll and didn't lean out so there's over the end of the tunnel we were light at the end of the tunnel we're about to give up but there's hope I don't know how he thinks he can ask me how much boost I want to run and me not say the biggest number possible Alberta wants to run 30 psi he thinks that's a little bit not safe so we're gonna probably go around 28 which is what he runs on his personal car and I trust him he knows these cars Alberto likes to push things until they blow up because he really likes building engine but we don't want to do that on this so we'll keep it a little more conservative we made 320 wheel about 320 foot-pounds of torque I believe around 23 psi it's still very rich and conservative timing so it's looking pretty good the car is really nice Springs and retainers on top of the cams so he's actually able to raise the red one a little bit I'm gonna have him bring it up from 7500 to 7800 to probably go a little bit more and even though the power doesn't really continue up there for the track it'll be nice not to have to bang in a third or be banging on rev limiter on the street and just have that little bit of extra gearing I don't know if you guys will be able to hear a difference in the video but this is going to be the poll that should be targeting closer to 28 psi what's that after boost 25 pounds so you got like an extra three psi and then you maybe add a little timing take away a little fuel is there still a little wretch we already have like an extra 80 foot-pounds of torque from yesterday and that's what I'm gonna feel more than anything so can we sit and Enoch 3:46 and Enoch all right let's see the numbers oh that was 346 horsepower that's 360 torque Oh Oh 350 oh that's all 344 not bad my jesters got the car all tuned the final numbers being safe 340 and 340 very respectable I'll pull up the curve for you guys real quick let's let's get this up here there you go very nice little curve let's just play the horsepower numbers so you can see those and yeah it's nice a little clean line now what he's doing just for me he's playing with the D cell taking away a bunch of time and try to get it to pop on these though all right so we're wrapping up here at Kings you've put so much time into popcorn it'll probably wake up the Pops a little bit but it's sick stars quick what's crazy it's like to my guys out there that are nice on dudes that don't know the 4g much essentially what we did is we changed an SR 20 with a t25 to a t28 and just made 350 wheel and 350 torque are about that 340 340 a pump gas on a stock you see you with bolt ons that's sick that's some good power and all-wheel drive a little light car like this that's a fun power alright guys so that's about it for the Evo ecumenical only of a skyline the Evo has got tuned tuned I'm very happy with the power numbers I think I want a little bit higher than 300 originally but I don't think it was realistic for it to be safe John from jester just wanted to get the car really safe so I can be able to enjoy it and not blow it up dry them through mountains and tracks and stuff but for it being my first overdrive car it is nice having a little bit lower it's fast I don't want to like downplay it too much but having a little bit milder more mild car so I can kind of get the hang of it you know it just like drifting you don't want to jump into track driving with some crazy powered car or you don't really learn how to properly control the car so I'm very excited I'm very happy with it it's really cool I had no idea that the stock ECU had so much capability with these he's showing me that on his computer he could actually log with the stock ECU and do pretty much all the stuff that you can do with a standalone even flex-fuel if I wanted to do that so who knows if all go stand alone or if I'll just keep it voltage because there's a lot of pull did drop out to 40s but I didn't think that was that big of a problem an Evo apparently it is alright so Alberto is applying power back to the fuel pump all right hit Alberto that makes a huge difference to the Mack imagine when the car actually needs fuel can you confirm with me right now that this makes absolutely no sense what we just did maybe so we just swapped out the injectors their stock ones are like 560 CCS and should absolutely not be leaning out with where we were at but we swap them out for some t-shirts 1200 cc big boys so I selected these tricks and I told him that eventually down the road maybe next year I might put the car in the 85 and run like a Garrett G 25 for somewhere in like the mid 400 so these twelve inner cc's will be great for that I wasn't gonna put him in until then but we put him in and the car just did a poll and didn't lean out so there's over the end of the tunnel we were light at the end of the tunnel we're about to give up but there's hope I don't know how he thinks he can ask me how much boost I want to run and me not say the biggest number possible Alberta wants to run 30 psi he thinks that's a little bit not safe so we're gonna probably go around 28 which is what he runs on his personal car and I trust him he knows these cars Alberto likes to push things until they blow up because he really likes building engine but we don't want to do that on this so we'll keep it a little more conservative we made 320 wheel about 320 foot-pounds of torque I believe around 23 psi it's still very rich and conservative timing so it's looking pretty good the car is really nice Springs and retainers on top of the cams so he's actually able to raise the red one a little bit I'm gonna have him bring it up from 7500 to 7800 to probably go a little bit more and even though the power doesn't really continue up there for the track it'll be nice not to have to bang in a third or be banging on rev limiter on the street and just have that little bit of extra gearing I don't know if you guys will be able to hear a difference in the video but this is going to be the poll that should be targeting closer to 28 psi what's that after boost 25 pounds so you got like an extra three psi and then you maybe add a little timing take away a little fuel is there still a little wretch we already have like an extra 80 foot-pounds of torque from yesterday and that's what I'm gonna feel more than anything so can we sit and Enoch 3:46 and Enoch all right let's see the numbers oh that was 346 horsepower that's 360 torque Oh Oh 350 oh that's all 344 not bad my jesters got the car all tuned the final numbers being safe 340 and 340 very respectable I'll pull up the curve for you guys real quick let's let's get this up here there you go very nice little curve let's just play the horsepower numbers so you can see those and yeah it's nice a little clean line now what he's doing just for me he's playing with the D cell taking away a bunch of time and try to get it to pop on these though all right so we're wrapping up here at Kings you've put so much time into this I'm very appreciative it's very important little bit but it's sick stars quick what's crazy it's like to my guys out there that are nice on dudes that don't know the 4g much essentially what we did is we changed an SR 20 with a t25 to a t28 and just made 350 wheel and 350 torque are about that 340 340 a pump gas on a stock you see you with bolt ons that's sick that's some good power and all-wheel drive a little light car like this that's a fun power alright guys so that's about it for the Evo ecumenical only of a skyline the Evo has got tuned tuned I'm very happy with the power numbers I think I want a little bit higher than 300 originally but I don't think it was realistic for it to be safe John from jester just wanted to get the car really safe so I can be able to enjoy it and not blow it up dry them through mountains and tracks and stuff but for it being my first overdrive car it is nice having a little bit lower it's fast I don't want to like downplay it too much but having a little bit milder more mild car so I can kind of get the hang of it you know it just like drifting you don't want to jump into track driving with some crazy powered car or you don't really learn how to properly control the car so I'm very excited I'm very happy with it it's really cool I had no idea that the stock ECU had so much capability with these he's showing me that on his computer he could actually log with the stock ECU and do pretty much all the stuff that you can do with a standalone even flex-fuel if I wanted to do that so who knows if all go stand alone or if I'll just keep it stocky so you because everyone the same and
