a practical guide to STOCKING & SETTING UP A NEW KITCHEN after a move

As I Move Everything Around and Clean Up This Cabinet

I'm going to move these real quick and then clean up this cabinet a bit while I'm in here. I see these measuring cups that I know might work better with the mixing bowls under the island, so I place those there. While I'm down here, I realize that in the next cabinet there are these pots that don't belong there, so I'm gonna place those in their proper cabinet. I'll need to shop for something to clean this up, but it's not too crazy in here thankfully.

This Cabinet is Working Okay for Now

The cabinet is working okay for now, but the mixing bowl cabinet next to it could use a little work. I think that salad spinner that's on the counter is gonna go perfectly in here and I've also got some wooden mixing bowls that belong in here. Since stepping back and taking a look at the space, I realized there's this space above the microwave where lesser-used gear could be stored so I thought that mixer in the pantry would work well there which it does.

Getting Everything Put Away

One thing I forgot to mention is before you put everything away, make sure your gear and the cabinets have been cleaned. Now I have this cabinet which is going to be my kind of go-to pantry. It's nice, it's eye-level, it's big, it's easy to see and reach. Maybe there's this multi-level spice organizer that I can get that'll make this even better but for now, the way the condiments and the spices are here is gonna work.

Main Strategy

The main strategy being the things you use most up in the front, the things you use more rarely in the back, then. I got this cabinet in the corner which is kind of the most remote cabinet and I always like to make the most remote cabinet my snack cabinet so it kind of deters you from taking a peek in there too often.

Finding Everything

While I'm in this cabinet, I see more plastic so that needs to go where the rest of the plastic lives. See how everything comes together when you just start playing with everything. Now most everything's put away, there are some things I like to leave out just to inspire cooking and some garlic now that we've got everything stocked up.

Making Broth and Tomato Sauce

The last thing I like to do is get some broth on the stove and make some weekday sauce. When that broth and tomato sauce are done, I'll store them in those quart containers and I'll throw them in the freezer. Then I have broth and stock that I can reduce down for sauces cooking soups and use for cooking, and some tomato sauce for a quick pasta whenever I need.

The Process of Making Broth

The key is going to be keeping this thing clean and removing all the scum as it begins to develop once it begins simmering. Hold off on adding the vegetables at first because it's easier to skim all of that scum when those vegetables aren't in the pot yet. After it's begun simmering and you've cleaned up a good deal of that scum, you can start to add the veg once you've got everything into that pot.

Making Tomato Sauce

We're gonna run them through the food mill once they're pureed. We can slice up some garlic and I forgot basil at the store but that's okay it can be made without it and we can just add it later. Get the garlic into the pot in some oil cook that for a minute or two then we're gonna add the tomatoes bring it up to a simmer we're gonna season it with salt and just cook it until it's the proper consistency.

The Importance of Patience

One thing I forgot to mention is before you put everything away, make sure your gear and the cabinets have been cleaned. Pantry is always a thing that is built over time so this idea that you got to get everything in one day you got to get everything placed in the right place in the first day you got to kill that idea it's a work in progress. The idea is to take baby steps to get it where you need to go.

The Key to Success

The key thing is basically just like everything in life is to just start doing it and once you start cooking in it the answers will start to reveal themselves so now that you got it down just remember nothing set in stone everything you do can always be changed evolved updated or improved. I know a lot of people just moved so hopefully this comes in handy

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: entold a lot of people moved into a new place and as you know i'm one of them so now we're tasked with setting up the kitchen which can be overwhelming but if you think practically about it it doesn't have to be first you're gonna go into google search not another cooking show pantry checklist my website should pop up click it scroll down on the pantry checklist and download it you can use it to do an inventory check on what's in house i took a screenshot on my ipad so i could then mark it up and use the pen as sort of a digital checklist so i didn't have to print it i have this pantry here that i'm thinking about using as bulk storage so i can put big quantities of things there and keep as a deep inventory for things like pastas and baking goods then i need to go through my condiments and my spices see what i have and see what i need next i assess my gear i'm in no shortage of pots and pans and based on their shape and size this lower cabinet is going to suit them fine i'll look for some sort of cabinet pan organizer to clean up this area but it'll do for now next to the stove i have these half drawers that fit utensils nicely with some full-size drawers next to it i'm going to look for an organizer that'll fit knives safely in there i've got some squirt bottles that don't belong here they'll get moved later and then i have these big cabinets that are going to kind of be my go-to pantry all the stuff that is easy to access that i use often i only took some specialized gear with me i picked up a soda stream for some sustainable sell to water this is a nutri mill grain mill so we can play around with grinding our fresh flowers and stuff for pastas i was sent this like two years ago and i haven't tried it yet i've got a salad spinner which is essential for cleaning greens nutri also sent me this mixer it's sort of like a kitchenaid but the motors on the bottom and it has this dual mixing feature on top supposed to be a little bit more powerful i also have this belmuta toaster which i might make a separate video for right under my island i have this small drawer with some utensils and random tools that i need to clean up below that i have some sheet trays and strainers i also have some pans that don't belong in here next i have some mixing bowls that sort of work well in this spot the key thing is to just find a place for all of these things even if it's temporary and as you use the kitchen you'll start to figure out where things need to go above the stove i've got my dishes and my glassware which actually kind of looks like it's in good shape and next to that above the sink i've got some plastic tupperware type things which is going to make sense you know as you're doing dishes you can kind of easily grab this stuff now that you've assessed your gear and your inventory take that checklist and make a separate list of things you need to stock up on then make a list of gear that you might need that you're not going to go out and buy all at once but will slowly accumulate over time as you need them once i had a list i hit the store i picked up some fresh veg some chicken scraps and some beef bones for broth you could probably find these cheaper but this is gonna do for now some essentials like butter some parmigiano reggiano forget about it slim pickings in the tomato section looks like there was a run on canned tomatoes but there was one can left of the best tomatoes you can buy so i grabbed what i could got some good oatmeal these are some of my favorite snacks ciabatta my favorite bread and then i'm ready to go i couldn't get everything that was on my list but it's a good start and we could fill in the blanks as we go just packed up my bags and i get the hell out of here and look this is how carts get down multiple levels in new york when i got back i immediately unpacked the perishables and got them into the fridge i usually clean my produce right when i get home but i've got too much to do so i'm going to put that off and then just start to place things again this doesn't have to be set in stone in a spot for you to decide whether it works there or not and then you can make a change so we've done an inventory check made a shopping list we went shopping got stocked up we assessed our gear we made a list of new things we need to get that we can accumulate over time as needed now it's time to sort of step back take a look at everything our space our cabinetry where we can possibly put things and start to piece it together try to make sense my mentality is if i'm going to be working in this area i sort of want to take like one or two steps in either direction and maybe turn around or whatever to get anything i need so i've got utensils i've got some stuff in here i've got tools all within reach everywhere bowls pans dishes that's sort of my mentality now i can start to refine the setup these drawers are a mess so i need some kind of organizer so i added it to my list ordered something from online and a few days later i got these interlocking drawer organizers that worked perfectly i'll try to leave links down to all these things below i don't know what this hammer and all this stuff is doing in this drawer so i'm going to get it out of there and i've got a few more of those organizers i'm going to clean this one up as well there isn't a lot to do with these half drawers so i think the utensils will work here but i do need a knife safe drawer organizer that's going to safely store knives and sharp objects in this drawer now that i had assessed earlier everything i know it makes more sense for these plastic bottles to go above the sink with all the rest of the plastic so i'm going to move these real quick and then clean up this cabinet a bit while i'm in here i see these measuring cups that i know might work better with the mixing bowls under the island so i place those there and while i'm down here i realize that in the
