The Sony ZV-E1: A Versatile Camera for Content Creators

my initial thoughts they haven't seen this video they didn't get a chance to approve it first so they're saying at the same time you're seeing that now that that's out of the way let's talk about the new sony zv e10 the zv e10 is a new camera with an aps-c size sensor it features obviously interchangeable lenses and the big feature here is it does feature a flip out screen that is fully articulating there is no electronic viewfinder so all of your work is going to be done on the flip out screen sony says this camera is optimized for content creation you may remember last year when sony released the zv1 i'm actually using a zv1 to film this video with right now so the zb1 is a small pocketable sized camera that was also designed and optimized for content creation so that camera featured a fixed lens you couldn't change it in and out it also featured a very tiny sensor so the advantages of this you're getting a step up you're going to get a bigger sensor and you have the ability to use whatever lenses you want to on the system the first thing to point out is how dead simple the design is i think anyone can pick up this camera and figure out how to use it pretty quickly you've got a power on and off switch we've got a mode selection button for toggling between stills mode video mode in what we call s and q mode slow and quick i'll talk about that in a second there's a big massive video record button we've got our shutter release a custom function button some familiar interface on the back so it has a very simple design which i actually kind of like now this is the point in the video where people will start saying ted you're just saying these things to make sony happy and look here's the deal i film on sony cameras for all the videos that i do on this show and i have some nice sony cameras i have an a7 s3 this is an fx3 that i like a lot it's a full-frame camera with a lot of professional features here's the deal with content creation though if you're making videos for youtube like i do the idea here is that i'm on camera and i'm also filming everything myself and so while these cameras are great if i'm filming at the studio and i have time to get things set up right they don't work as well when we're out and about and so that's a kit situation or it's a case where i think that having a very simplified camera is a much better way to go in fact to prove my point i'm making this entire video using the zve10 and the zv1 i'm not going to use anything else in here so i think on that note let's go out and kind of see how this camera performs i need some things because we're going to try some different scenarios but we'll let you be the judge on this so i do have a very exotic location planned for us to go do a little vlog simulation and we're gonna go behind the building so if you're new to this channel i just moved into this office space like earlier this year so this is a great opportunity for my neighbors who are here on sunday to see me talk into a camera for a living so right now i am filming with the zve10 and i'm using the internal microphone so the internal microphone on this camera is much like what we saw in the zv1 it's this newer design it's even got this little dead cat on a hot shoe or cold shoe that you can slide in if you're having wind issues i will say this if you are interested in having pretty good video and you are audio dependent in other words you've got a lot of dialogue you're doing an interview you're vlogging i would highly recommend you upgrade your microphone this is the ecm b1m i don't know what's up with these names this is an exceptional microphone that sony has designed that does not use any cables or batteries it just fits into your hot shoe it is compatible with this camera i'm gonna put this in and we can hear the difference here so this is the internal microphone we'll switch over right now and that should sound a little better i'm gonna be using this microphone on this camera for the durations video i think it's much superior to the one that's built in one that's built in is fine you'll get by in a pinch just i would really recommend you upgrade if you're serious about this another accessory i would recommend with this camera it's a little bluetooth tripod i'm not even going to try and remember the name on this but essentially it is a tripod that will connect it's powered it will connect to the camera via bluetooth so you can do things like you can adjust zoom you can start and stop the video you even have your custom function on here which is assignable it's actually very handy to have even if you don't have the camera mounted to it you can at least start and stop your recordings and have some control over the camera also highly recommend it and while i've got this out i want to show you two modes that are found on this camera that brought over from the zv one they're actually super handy to have even if you know how to set a camera up they're really awesome to have as shortcuts the first one i'm going to show you is called product showcase so on the back of the camera the trashcan button is set up as the custom function to enable this so what you're going to do is push the little trash can in you're going to see product showcase appear on the screen okay so i can't do it while i'm recording i had to stop but anyway i've got it on now so what product showcase does right now the camera is using iaf in other words it sees my eyes and it's adjusting the focus to be right on me now if i hold something up and put it in front of me it automatically adjusts focus to whatever the object is that i'm holding up this is super handy if you are doing a product showcase hence the name so if i want to go back to standard autofocus where it does not shift if something were to move in front of me i just turned that off but not while recording all right so the second custom function that i want to show you allows you to toggle between two modes one is called defocus the other one's called clear so typically we do this aperture it allows you to do it in one click so let's say that we want me in the background everything in focus we want a really clear sharp picture we're going to be in the clear setting if i want the background to be blown out i want the bokeh to come out then we're going to go into defocus so what we're going to do is just hit that tab at the bottom and the first thing you should see is defocus this is defocus and by the way this will work while you're recording now we're clear defocus clear okay so let's move on to some image stabilization test now there's a couple different scenarios we're going to test but one thing you need to know about the zve10 is it does not have in-body image stabilization it's digital only which is kind of a drag but i'm going to review some things the first thing we're going to do is actually stick this on the little tripod tabletop thing and we're going to try the digital image stabilization alright so this is standard mode and i'm trying not to move very much i also want to note that i am using the sony 10 to 18 millimeter f4 lens which does have optical steady shot built in this is still not my favorite mode on here now i'm standing pretty still but as soon as i start to move you're going to see a lot of micro jitters and i don't know this is not my favorite mode to put this in now we do have an active image stabilization mode remember it's going to crop so right now i'm at 12 millimeters i'm not going to change the focal length but let's move to active now you are seeing active image stabilization i'm still at 12 millimeters and you can see how much it cropped in on the picture so you're gonna have to extend your arm out further if you don't have a wide enough lens again not ideal i still don't think this is the greatest image stabilization in the world so for this example we're going to use image stabilization using the gyroscope data in the camera so some of the newer sony cameras including this one will record gyroscope data while you're making your video and so these are recorded into separate files so when you open up your folder you're going to see your movie files and then you see these xml sidecar files now the way this is rendered is on the computer so sony has a free application called catalyst and you can one by one go through your files and actually smooth them out using the gyroscope data now two cons here one it's still going to use cropping and so you're going to crop down so the more you're moving around the more it's going to need to crop into the image the second problem with this is that the free version of catalyst only does one file at a time if you want to batch a whole folder files you're going to have to get the paid version so it looks great it works great it'll be neat one day when this technology is actually live in camera and not on a computer somewhere but it's still a little ways off not ideal and finally we've got it mounted to a gimbal i think this is probably the best way to go in terms of getting smooth footage now reason i wanted to mention putting this on a gimbal if you have ever tried to vlog with a camera mounted to a gimbal before you know that this is a setup that can get really heavy really quickly i have to say this is one of the lighter cameras that i've used and also it's really easy to balance like the weight is distributed really well throughout the camera it's super easy to get on a gimbal now the gimbal will give you the smoothest footage but you can notice in the background anything with a straight line if there's motion you're going to get rolling shutter logging in log who would have guessed not v-log s-log it's s-log 3 it's easy to grade if you've got your exposure correct you shouldn't give you much trouble but it gives you another dimension in the type of filmmaking that you can do using this little inexpensive camera other thing is you've got hlg you've got all the cine profiles sony actually do deliver a lot in that respect so pretty decent little aps-c camera from sony is it perfect well no it's not and i do want to talk about some of the pros and cons let's start with the pros the first pro is the price this camera comes in body only at 699 dollars u.s and for a hundred dollars more you can get a kit that includes the little power zoom lens the 16 to 50. now for a 699 dollar body i'm not going to expect this to perform like a 2 000 or 3 000 body it's just not that this is the right tool for the right job if you want to create content and you need a very video centric body that you can change lenses in and out on another big pro is the size of this camera i mentioned over and over again this is super small it's super portable it's lightweight i think sony did an excellent job on that in fact compact cameras is a design directive of sony that's one of the reasons you have trade-offs in these bodies like the smaller battery which we'll get to in a minute and some other things but i think when you consider that this is the right tool for the right job and what it does well it really does well autofocus is also best in class i don't think you're going to find another aps-c body in this range that's going to do better than this canon probably is going to come the closest but sony really is the gold standard in terms of iaf and then also the ability to do things like product showcase you have some custom modes on here and it's really worth getting for that now let's mention some cons the biggest con for me on here is the w battery this is an old battery that i thought we had moved away from on this camera we're now using z batteries in all of the other bodies well this one still uses the w having said that and i noted this when i got to review the a6400 is that sony have gotten pretty good with the way they have their firmware coded and that it is more efficient and you are going to get more battery life out of these batteries than you would let's say on an a5100 or an a6000 i mean they have become more efficient having said that i know it's a sacrifice for size but i really wish they'd made it a little bigger and just included the z battery con number two is the lack of in-body image stabilization and actually sony have really never done this really well so i guess it's not a huge deal i expect on sony cameras i'm gonna have to use a gimbal another thing that might be a big deal to some people who shoot a lot of stills is autofocus capabilities of this camera so real quick this camera is designed to be a video camera that allows you to shoot some stills on so the video autofocus is awesome it's got iaf it's got tracking with iaf it is amazing now as soon as you go over to stills modes you lose all the tracking modes you don't have expandable flexible spot you just have the basic generic modes they will update and refresh but you can't like let's say track a bird in flight or something like that so again who is this camera for well if you have a big need to shoot stills you probably want to consider one of the other aps-c bodies i'm gonna go wide for this one because it ties in so the last con and this is something that sony can do something about is the lack of choices for dedicated aps-c lenses now i understand that sony are going for the whole one mount system anything e-mount can fit on here but where we suffer is on the wide end of things lenses that are designed for aps-c cameras tend to be smaller we do have the 1018 that i've been using this entire video it's an okay lens it's an f4 but if you want something that is not f4 if you want something that's f 2.8 well you can go the tamron route but i think this is an opportunity for sony to step up the big takeaway with the zve1 is okay it's essentially a parts bin camera for sony in other words it is made from technology that's already been used in other bodies having said that it does not mean it's a bad camera this camera ties together using a concept there's a lot of really cool things that you can do with this camera and again it's the right tool for the right job i think for me if i'm in a situation where i'm quote unquote vlogging but i need something that's super portable and super easy to carry around this is definitely a contender i think when you have bigger cameras they don't do well in those situations if i'm in studio sure i have a setting that's relaxed enough to do whatever i want but if you're on a plane or you're with friends or you're on family vacation you probably don't want to lug that stuff around and i think that's where this camera really excels if you want something that's going to
