Apple TV 4K - Hands On Review

**Exploring the Apple TV 4K: A Review**

The Apple TV 4K is a powerful set-top box that offers a range of features and capabilities, but how does it stack up against other streaming devices on the market? In this review, we'll delve into the details of the Apple TV 4K, exploring its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its performance in various scenarios.

**Searching for Content**

One of the most convenient features of the Apple TV 4K is its search functionality. With a simple voice command or tap on the screen, you can quickly find what you're looking for. We put this feature to the test by searching for "Orange is the New Black" and saw that it was available on both Netflix and iTunes. The Apple TV 4K also allows you to search for specific content types, such as 4k HDR movies, making it easy to find what you're in the mood for.

**Finding 4k HDR Content**

Speaking of 4k HDR content, the Apple TV 4K makes it incredibly easy to find and access. With a simple tap on the screen or voice command, you can browse through a list of available titles that are optimized for 4k HDR. This feature is particularly useful if you're looking for a specific movie or show in high definition. We also noticed that some TV manufacturers may struggle with delivering 4k HDR content, but Apple's implementation seems seamless.

**HDR Mode and Compatibility**

One notable feature of the Apple TV 4K is its ability to force your TV into HDR mode when streaming HDR content. This can sometimes raise issues with certain TVs or viewing environments, but in our testing, it wasn't a major problem. The Apple TV 4K allows you to switch between different modes, including 4k SDR and 4k HDR, which means you can choose how your TV interacts with the device.

**Performance**

In terms of performance, the Apple TV 4K is extremely speedy and responsive. Whether you're navigating the interface or switching between apps, everything feels fast and seamless. The device also handles multiple tasks simultaneously without a hitch, making it an excellent choice for those who want to stream multiple shows at once.

**Rental and Purchase Options**

One of the standout features of the Apple TV 4K is its rental and purchase options. For movies, you can rent or buy individual titles in high definition, including some major blockbusters. This means you can access a wide range of content without having to subscribe to a particular service.

**Conclusion**

At $180, the Apple TV 4K is certainly an investment, but it delivers on many fronts. With its powerful search functionality, easy access to 4k HDR content, and speedy performance, it's an excellent choice for those who want a seamless streaming experience. While some users may find issues with the device's HDR mode compatibility, we didn't encounter any major problems in our testing.

If you're a hardcore Apple user or simply looking for a premium streaming device, the Apple TV 4K is definitely worth considering. With its range of features and capabilities, it's an excellent choice for those who want to elevate their streaming experience. However, for those on a budget or with limited space, there are many strong competitors in the market that may offer similar functionality at a lower price point.

The Apple TV 4K is available now and can be purchased from various retailers, including the Apple website itself. For more information on this device, please check out our full review, which includes additional details and insights into its performance and capabilities.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwell here it is the Apple TV 4k you know some would say that Apple is a little late to the party with this devices Amazon Roku and chromecast have all offered 4k for well over a year now but others would say that Apple's just been trying to perfect the platform and the device and besides there wasn't all that much 4k content out there to begin with well it's not a perfect set-top streamer but it does do some key things better than its competition so in this Apple TV 4k review we're going to take a look at whether this is the right streaming set-top box for you here's everything that comes in the box you get the Apple TV box itself of course power cable a slightly redesigned remote and then a lightning cable that's to charge the remote and then a Quick Start Guide with all like three sentences in it and then some apple stickers on your left you see the Apple TV 4k and on your right the fourth generation Apple TV and you can tell there's not a lot of difference here on the remote they add a little white ring here that's so that if you're fumbling with this in the dark you can actually feel which way is up that's a little bit helpful as for the boxes themselves though there's not a whole lot of difference on the back you can see that we've lost the little micro USB port that was mostly for service but we still have HDMI Ethernet and power and then you can see at the bottom there's a little bit of a space for the ring here that's because the a-10 x-fusion processor which is super-powerful tends to generate heat so they did this for ventilation setup is dead simple after you put in your language and country you get the option of either using Siri or not using Siri we're going to go ahead and use it because that comes in really helpful and then you can set up with your iOS device or manually and this is where things get really slick click setup with your device then you want to turn on your device place it close to the Apple TV and a setup wizard will pop up put that in enter your Apple ID and it's gonna automatically import all your settings from Wi-Fi to your iTunes account now that I'm all set up and I've got my apps downloaded I'm ready to use the Apple TV and so I just want to show you how fast this is I can scroll through all this stuff extremely quickly let's pop it open Netflix and you can see I can scroll through these apps lightning-fast I'm just flicking my thumb around to get through all this stuff you can actually get going a little too quickly but this is a testament to just how quick that a 10x Fusion processor is now as far as the layout goes it's about the same if you're used to Apple TV this will be no different the big difference is just how beautiful it is it's in 4k and it's approximating HDR so it is bright and punchy and again you just get to moving really quick through here Apple's got lots of content to suggest for you and most of its gonna be on iTunes but one of the great things about Siri integration is that you can do voice search for nearly anything and it's not gonna just show you Apple content let me show you what I mean show me orange is the new black and obviously orange is the new black is a Netflix original so you would expect to see it on Netflix but as you can see here they show you it's available both on Netflix and iTunes we can do that with let's say The Walking Dead Show Me The Walking Dead very quick search results and you can see we can watch it on Netflix iTunes or AMC so Apple TV is showing us multiple places to watch this content and some of its going to be free if you already have a subscription here's something else I like it makes finding 4k HDR content easier if you're looking at the iTunes Store it's going to make it very obvious you can actually search for 4k content within the iTunes Store but you can also do it with Netflix and I suspect when Amazon is available later this year you'll be able to do it there too let me show you show me 4k Netflix movies and now we have a nice long list of all sorts of titles that are available in 4k at Netflix you can also just go into the Netflix apps and do a search there but being able to search from one screen makes it extremely convenient now there's a funny issue that's being talked about in forms and on other reviews about how the Apple TV forces your TV into HDR mode if you have an HDR capable TV and how that can raise some issues now on paper it does seem like it would be a big problem but in practice it's not the horrendous thing that I think some are making it out to be let me actually show you what it looks first I want to show you that you can actually take the Apple TV 4k out of HDR mode so if we go into settings video and audio down to format you can see it's in 4k Dolby vision because my TV supports it and I said yes during setup here I can go into the standard 4k HDR I can also go to 4k SDR and if I do that it's gonna take the TV out of HDR mode and it's gonna present SDR content normally now you can probably already tell the screen just got a whole lot brighter I'm in Netflix now and here's a scene from oranges the new black right now the Apple TV 4k is putting out SDR Netflix content in an HDR container it's saying this as HDR but it is an in reality and you'll notice that in some of the darker areas on the screen things are a little bit mushy they're kind of all black and in the bright areas of the screen they're especially white especially in the background where you've got sunlight coming in it kind of takes some of the detail away now this is the exact same content played through the Netflix app on the TV and it's in standard dynamic range mode that matches the content you can tell right away that the image is brighter we see more details in the actresses faces we see more details in that bright segment behind them even the reds and oranges are better saturated and look more natural here if we switch back to the Apple TV 4k again exact same picture settings on this TV you can see it's a bit dimmer and the colors are a little bit different this is just one TV though the Apple TV 4k is going to interact with various TVs differently those TVs will handle the information that they receive differently so at the end of the day is it really a big deal let me say no at least in my testing it hasn't been a big deal and I want to point out that when it's delivering 4k HDR 10 or Dolby vision HDR content it is spectacular in fact iTunes movies deliveries of 4k with Dolby vision and HDR 10 look really good strangely close to the 4k Ultra HD blu-ray versions so is the Apple TV 4k worth it well at $180 it's certainly very pricey but it does some things extremely well Siri search works great it's going to work excellent with your iTunes movie account you can get 4k HDR movies right now and those include some huge blockbusters at a fairly reasonable price both for rental and purchase it's extremely speedy to use and it looks fantastic I'm not real high on the fact that it's delivering SDR content through an HDR channel but I don't see that making a huge difference for most folks so I would say that if you are a hardcore Apple user the Apple TV 4k is certainly worth a purchase otherwise there's a lot of strong competition out there that's it for our Apple TV 4k review we've covered as much about this
