A Finnish Food Tasting Experience with Emmy
Hello and welcome back to my channel, lovelies! I'm excited to share with you today's Finnish food tasting experience, which I received from my lovely Joonaton. I must say, I'm thrilled to have tried some of these Finnish treats, and I'll be sharing all the details with you.
Finland Foodie Package
The package arrived from Joonaton, and I couldn't wait to dive in. This was a home-brewed beer called Kotikalja. It's often served in canteens and restaurant buffets in Finland, and this kit comes with everything needed to make it at home. The instructions require some time and effort, as the brew needs to ferment for about 48 hours. I'm excited to try my hand at brewing this and see what kind of beer I can create.
Brewing Kotikalja
I took on the challenge of brewing Kotikalja, following the instructions to heat it up, boil it, and let it ferment. It's been a few days now, and I'm eager to taste the finished product. This is going to be a follow-up video, as brewing beer requires patience and time.
Other Finnish Treats
In addition to the Kotikalja, Joonaton also included some other interesting items in the package. One of these was a can of soup called Hernekeitto. It's a pea soup that's often served in school lunches with mustard to prevent flatulence. Who knew?! The instructions were simple: add half a can of water and heat it on the stovetop.
Hernekeitto Soup
I decided to follow the instructions and heated up the soup. As I took my first taste, I was surprised by how much it tasted like split pea soup. It had a smoky flavor, which might be due to some ham or bacon in there. The bean taste was slightly different from what I'm used to, but it still felt hearty, warm, and nourishing. I think this would pair well with a crusty piece of bread.
Mustard Pairing
To add an extra layer of flavor to the Hernekeitto soup, Joonaton included some German mustard called Landsberg. It came in a fun jar that caught my attention. The mustard had a nice amount of heat to it, and I decided to give it a try with a dash or two.
The Verdict on Mustard
Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the combination of Hernekeitto soup with mustard as much as I thought I would. Maybe I added too much mustard? It tasted more like mustard soup than the traditional pea soup I'm used to. The vinegary and mustardy flavors overpowered the other ingredients. However, if it prevents flatulence, maybe it's worth trying again?

The final item in the package was a mystery that Joonaton had included without revealing what it was. Let's take a closer look at these fascinating Finnish treats and see what we can learn from them.

It's quite salty; it's got a little bit of a smoky flavor; the flavor is a little bit different, but very, very similar to a can of split pea soup that you would find here in the States --a little less smoky; quite salty; and the bean taste is a little bit different; it tastes a little bit more like white beans?rather than split peas; but quite good; hearty; warm; and nourishing --I think it would go really well with a crusty piece of bread. Nice. Got some mustard. This is German mustard -- it's called Landsberg. It comes in this reallyfun jar; and I love it. It's got a nice amount of heat to it. So, let's try it with a little dash of that...I don't know. I've never had split pea soup with mustard before. Alright, let's give it a taste.Here we go!Eww. I don't think I like it with mustard. Maybe I added too much. It tastes like mustard soup now. A little bit vinegared and mustardy....Un unh. I don't like it.But if it prevents flatulence, maybe it's worth it -- you know!? The next thing we have is this:and these are called: \"Pohjanmaan Pastilli.\" Sorry Finnish friends!Hmm Hmmm!Wow! That's great!Super pepperminty. Wow!Abd what a delightful texture! It completely crumbles and leaves like asandy feeling in your mouth; and just dissolves intopepperminty goodness! It's's delightful!This is called Peruna-Lastuja:Karthanon/Kartanon; and these are chips. Peruna means potato chips; kartanon means mansion; and these are dill --Tilli is dill and Kermavilli is sour cream.They look great. Alright, let's give 'em a taste.Mmmm!Yum! Mmm hmm! Great crunch. Quite salty (but it's a potato chip); great potato flavor; and really dilly and sour creamy.Now, it's a really strong dill flavor. Almost like a dill pickle. It's great. The style of chip is similar to a kettle cooked chip. Not quite as firm, but nice and crisp; and nice, big air pockets.(Crunch, crunch, crunch...) Mm! (Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.) Really good! I feel like the Nordic and Scandanavian countries really know their potato chips. I mean, they're really, really delicious.Especially the combination of sour cream and onion and sour cream and dill. Scrumptious!The next item I have is this: sadly this arrived broken; but I want to share it withyou anyways; it's made by the company Fazer; and it's broken -- I'm so disappointed by it, but...So this is a chocolate egg; what's specialabout this is it's covered in a candy eggshell --look at this! How precious! That looksexactly like an eggshell; BUT, this ismade out of sugar! So, these are called Mignon, and these are popular during Easter. Itlooks exactly like an eggshell. It feels likean eggshell; it breaks like an eggshell;it looks like an eggshell; it's amazing!Alright, let's give it a taste. Apparently this is made out of sugar.Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.....Hmmm. Am I not supposed to eat that?!Cuz that tasted like eggshell. Unhhh...And now that I look at Joonaton's notes, he says the little part at the bottom is made out of sugar.So this is probably a real egg. I just ate eggshell! It's quite crunchy. It doesn't taste likemuch. All right. And this is chocolate. Let's give this a taste. Here we go. Itadakimasu!Mmm! Super, super smooth consistency of the milk chocolate in there. Almost a kind ofbuttery, waxy texture to it. The chocolate flavor actually isn't very strong -- it's prettymild; and it's quite sweet; mostly it hasthis really melty, silky quality to it.Let's give it a cut and see if there's anything in the middle. (Tho-thwang!) Nope! Just chocolate. Just solid chocolate.And lastly we have this: and this is called Xylimax. And this is made by the company Fazer.And...this is a xylitol gum which I've tried before; but what's specialabout this is it's \"flavor-changing\" apparently. So, it's called Flow, and it changes from blueberry to vanilla to menthol. What?!That sounds amazing! Ah, they're beautiful. Bright, kind of purplish color.It's like something out of Willy Wonka -- the flavor changing gum. All right. Here we go!Mm Hmm. Blueberry.Definitley blueberry. And minty....Hmm... I'm waiting for the vanilla.Unh unh. (Laughs.) I think that's a pretty tough sell. To me it tastes likeblueberry mint and a little bit of vanilla, all at the same time. I'm waiting for this kind ofsequential experience and I'm not reallyfeeling it. Hmm. It is a lovely tasting gum, though. Nice and blueberriedwith a nice kind of punch of mintwhich is mentholated so you've got this kindof cool sensation in your mouth; but...but sadly I'm not experiencing the three phases of flavors...Hmmm. Maybe I have to just chew it longer.Ernn. It is true that the blueberryflavor does dissipate, and you tastemostly of the mint kind of at the end; but that's sort of true of most gums, right? -- kind of just ends and leaves kind of afresh taste in your mouth -- supposedly. Yeah. Not a bad gum. The texture's nice --kind of smooth and a nice kind ofrubbery resilience to it. And, of course, ithas that nice candy coating initially,so it has a nice kind of crackle when you bite into it. Hmm. It's a good tasting gum, butI don't, sadly, feel all three phases.
