Comparing the Cameras of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6: A Detailed Analysis

In this video, we're going to compare the cameras of the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 6 to see if there's any difference or improvement. We'll be looking at both front-facing and rear-facing cameras, as well as images and video quality. The audio icon in the corner of the screen will indicate which device is producing the audio.

We're currently outdoors on a beautiful day, using the front-facing cameras on both devices. As we switch to the rear-facing cameras, we can see that the iPhone 6s has a unique feature - it can film at full 4K resolution. This means that when we export the video from 1080p, we can crop in much further and still get a lot of detail. Let's take a quick walk around to demonstrate this.

We'll head over to an area with less bright lighting, where we can test out the autofocus feature on both devices. Going from a subject that's close to something that's far away, we can see how well each device handles low-light conditions. The iPhone 6s appears to perform better in this regard, producing sharper images.

Next, let's compare images taken with both devices in different lighting conditions. We'll start by using natural light, then gradually reduce the brightness to simulate low-light conditions. At first glance, it's difficult to notice a significant difference between the two devices. However, as we continue to decrease the light levels, the iPhone 6s starts to show its advantages. The images are less grainy and more detailed, with better overall quality.

To further illustrate this point, let's zoom in on specific areas of the image taken with each device. When we put the two side by side at the same size, it becomes clear that the iPhone 6s has a noticeable edge when it comes to low-light performance. The text is sharper and more defined on the iPhone 6s, while the iPhone 6 struggles to produce clean images.

Finally, let's test out the rear-facing flash feature on both devices. We've acquired some new Slick Wrap skins for both phones and will apply them to compare their camera performance. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the iPhone 6s has an advantage in terms of color accuracy and overall image quality. The reds are more vibrant and nuanced on the iPhone 6s, while the iPhone 6 produces a slightly different shade.

It's worth noting that these differences may not be solely due to the camera hardware itself, but rather a combination of factors including software processing and the device's overall design. Nevertheless, the results are clear: the iPhone 6s offers significant improvements over its predecessor when it comes to image quality, low-light performance, and video resolution.

In terms of practical implications, should you upgrade from an iPhone 6 solely for the camera? If resolution, dynamic range, and low-light performance are essential features to you, then upgrading to the iPhone 6s is well worth considering. However, if these elements are not as important to you, there's still a lot to be said for the iPhone 6 – it produces great images and can likely be pushed for another year or more with proper care.

improvements we're going to be looking at the front and rear facing cameras and our images as well as video too do also look out for the audio icon in the corner of the screen and that will indicate to you which device the audio is coming from too and you can see if there's any differences there too so we're currently Outdoors it's a beautiful day and we are using the front facing cameras on both devices and we're going to be switching to the rear facing cameras right now and see what the rear facing cameras are like as well then we'll do lots of different tests so do hit that thumbs up but let's get straight to it so now we are filming with the rear facing cameras and again it's a beautiful day so this is the sort of detail that you can expect now the iPhone 6s has a party trick and that's that it can film at full 4K so what that means is that in this 1080p exported video we can crop in a lot further and then it will give you a lot more detail there so let's just have a quick walk around as well so we'll go somewhere around this area where it's not as bright okay and we're just going to take a bit of a walk to see what the difference is like and there we go right so now we're indoors with the iPhone 6s in relatively low light and just testing out the autofocus so going from a subject that's close to something that's far seems to be doing a pretty decent job now exactly the same lighting with the iPhone 6 so just going from something that's far to something that's close right this is just a quick side by side just to show you what the difference is like in relatively low light uh we've just completely got rid of the light so it's whatever is just sort of creeping through the Curve s and once again this is side by side just so you can see the difference between both of these so that was the video now let's have a look at some images so we're starting off with some selfies so the front-facing camera both in very good light here and both seem to be doing a pretty decent job overall I can already notice that you've got more detail on the iPhone 6s if you look at my beard you can see that it's a a little bit sharper compared to the right hand side image and that is because you've got 5 megapixels now compared to 1.2 megapixels so if we go in 100% you can see that we can crop in so much further on the iPhone 6s so definitely an improvement on here now a selfie in low light so we can see that both seem to be doing a decent job although I do see lot more detail on the iPhone 6s once again and I also do prefer the color slightly I think there's a tad yellow tint on the iPhone 6 so I would give the edge here once again to the iPhone 6s now the other thing that you do have on the iPhone 6s is the front-facing flash now this isn't necessarily a flash in the traditional sense but this illuminates the screen to give you a brighter selfie so if you put that on you can see that you've got so much more detail and less grain definitely less grain compared to previously so there's just a little bit of a shocked face when seeing the light but definitely useful for those low light selfie situations now an outdoor image in very good light a beautiful scene here which I took as part of my camera test of the iPhone 6s so do go ahead and check that out I'll leave a link in the description below but here you can see that both doing a good job and with the 6s I think you've got a little bit better dynamic range I mean if you look towards the sky then you can see there's some better color and also towards the darker areas they seem to be a little bit better maintained on the iPhone 6s now once again you do have the benefit of the resolution so if we go in 100% you can see that we can crop in much further and you can see that those darker areas are slightly better maintained compared to the iPhone 6 so that extra resolution and that dynamic range definitely seems useful now a bit of a closeup in good lights both have very nice amounts of detail and the colors are also very similar here so not much of a difference and I think generally in good light you're not going to be noticing too much of a difference between these two because both do perform very well now an indoor image in good light once again very very similar I can't really notice much of a difference between either of these now let's start dropping the light and seeing how much of a difference we see so this is in relatively low light and can't notice too much of a difference so let's drop the light even further now you can really start seeing that the iPhone 6 is breaking down if you look towards the text I mean it's very grainy and the iPhone 6s is definitely performing much better in terms of the low light now zooming in so putting these side by side at the same size you can see that definitely on the iPhone 6s you have an improvement in terms of the low light you've got so much less grain and you can see that the text here especially is a lot sharper on the iPhone 6s now finally a test with the rear facing flashes so I've just got some of these new Slick Wrap skins coming today which I'm going to be putting onto the iPhone 6s and 6s plus now if you do want to go ahead and pick some of these up then I will be leaving a link in the description below these hero Skins are limited edition and look very slick so I would definitely recommend you go ahead and pick these up while you can in terms of the images can't notice too much of a difference although I do like the colors a little bit better on the iPhone 6s especially if you look at the Iron Man one on the top which is the most colorful here you can see that the reds are a little bit better on the bottom one they do seem a little bit more towards the orange side so I would once again give the edge here to the iPhone 6s now this might not just be because of the flash I think this is the camera itself which is better maintaining the colors so there we have have it the camera comparison between the iPhone 6s and 6s plus overall there are definitely some improvements especially in terms of the resolution so you are going to get more detail this is for both images and video you do now have 4K video which is a great benefit you've got overall better dynamic range as well I found that the darker areas were better maintained on the iPhone 6s and you've definitely got better low light performance now I didn't really notice any difference in terms of the audio you can go back and have a listen it was pretty much the same to me so I don't think there's any improvements in terms of the audio recording so to conclude I think there are lots of improvements with the iPhone 6s now should you upgrade just for the camera well if resolution dynamic range and low light performance are important to you then I think it is worth the upgrade for the camera of the iPhone 6s especially for that 4K but if those elements are not so important to you then the iPhone 6 still takes great images and I think you can still probably push it for another year that's what I think anyway what do you think do drop me a comment below and let me know your thoughts
