Review - SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (1TB)

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD: A Reliable Companion for Your MacBook Pro

As Jeff Benjamin from Nine-to-Five Mack discusses, the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is an excellent choice as a companion for your MacBook Pro. One of the key details about this drive is its rugged design, which features an IP 55 water and dust resistant rating. This means that it can withstand drops up to two meters, making it perfect for those who are always on-the-go. Additionally, SanDisk includes a three-year limited warranty with every purchase, giving you peace of mind in case anything goes wrong.

Upon first impression, the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is indeed small and compact, measuring about three and a half inches tall. This size makes it easy to carry around and fits perfectly in your hand. For comparison, Jeff uses an AirPods case as a reference point, demonstrating just how small and thin this drive is. However, one thing that Jeff doesn't particularly like about the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is its build quality. While it's still fairly rugged, the use of plastic materials for the front panel can attract lint. Nevertheless, the drive's lightweight design and IP 55 rating make it an excellent choice for those who need a reliable and portable storage solution.

One of the key features that sets the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD apart is its single IO port, which is USB C-enabled and supports USB 3.1 Gen2 speeds. This means that you can transfer data at high speeds, making it perfect for workflows that require fast data transfer rates. Jeff also mentions that SanDisk includes a USB type-C cable along with an adapter that allows the drive to adapt to USB A for legacy connections. While this feature may not be necessary for those who are using a new MacBook Pro, it's still a handy addition that can come in handy.

To put the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD through its paces, Jeff uses his 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro as a testing device. He checks the system profiler to confirm that the drive is recognized by the computer and has a speed of up to 10 gigabits per second. Next, he runs some speed tests using Black Magic Disk Speed Test Tool to measure the drive's performance. The results show that the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD can read data at speeds of around 400 MB/s and write data at speeds of around 520 MB/s. These results are remarkably close to the drive's rated speed, making it clear that this is a high-performance storage solution.

For those who need a reliable and portable storage solution for their MacBook Pro, the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is definitely worth considering. With its rugged design, fast data transfer rates, and convenient features like USB C and an adapter for legacy connections, this drive is perfect for professionals who are always on-the-go. Whether you're transferring large files, working with 4K ProRes workflows, or just need a reliable storage solution, the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is up to the task.

right off the bat a couple of key details about this drive number one it is rugged it features an IP 55 water and dust resistant design and thanks to its vibration and shock resistant solid-state core it can withstand drops up to two meters another important detail is that SanDisk includes a three-year limited warranty so here it is folks the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD first impression is that it's it's tiny it's about three and a half inches tall and you know you would expect that because the name itself says portable so we would hope that it would be just that in it lives up to its name perfectly fine you can see it fits easily in the hand and let's compare to something that we all know and love the air pods so you could see that one terabyte drive next to the air pot case very small and very thin and still packs a whole lot of storage in there now the one thing I don't really like about the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD is the build quality not necessarily even build quality just the build materials like there's plastic on in front like a soft touch rubber material on the back that tends to attract lint it's still fairly rugged though I mean it has an IP 55 rating it is drop-in shock resistant one benefit though of the bill materials is that it's extremely lightweight and SanDisk you know you have a three year warranty and with my review model they even included this the SanDisk carabiner so kind of emphasizing the drives ruggedness and its portability and you'll find a single IO port on the drive eight USB C port this is USB 3.1 gen2 enabled and SanDisk does include a USB type-c cable along with an adapter that allows it to adapt to USB a for legacy connection so that's fairly handy to have but if you're using a new macbook of course you won't need that all you need is this right here just plug it in to the drive and then plug the other end into your macbook pro so let's go ahead and do right now I have the 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro we're gonna go ahead and plug it on in and you know me the first thing I'm going to check is system profiler USB you can see it's up to 10 gigabits per second because it's USB 3.1 gen2 which is nice to have so let's go ahead and run some speed test using black magic disk speed test tool and you can see the speed four hundred and seventy three megabytes per second right in about five twenty to read so this Drive comes pre formatted using exFAT which gives it Windows and Mac compatibility out of the box but of course you can reformat that however you like I'm gonna do Mac OS extended journaled here and I'm gonna run that test again just to see if there's any difference at all I don't suspect that there will be let's go ahead and try it anyway all right so about 400 mm 87 right in about 520 read so right around the same ballpark as before and now let's use quick pinch to run a sequential test and this usually gets closer to the rated speed on the box for these drives so let's go ahead and try it out and let's check out the average so you can see about five hundred and thirty six megabytes the second read which comes close to that 550 rating on the box so here are the final test results for the same disk estream portable SSD you could see read and write speeds so we can conclude that this $300 drive is definitely capable of supporting 4k ProRes workflows on your macbook pro let me know what
