**A Conversation with Cory from Learn Mobile Photography**
In this special episode, we're sitting down with Corey, the creator behind Learn Mobile Photography, to talk about everything from space exploration to his favorite movies and tech. We started off by asking Cory if he had a favorite piece of technology that he's liked in the last year, anything at all. "Dang what kind of technology do I have to own it uh no anything that you thought was cool in last year is fine too," Cory replied with a laugh. It turns out, one of his favorite pieces of tech is Elon Musk and SpaceX. "I think spacex is killing it so i'd say um be so down to you know be the first instagrammer in space oh man that's one of my goals for 2015," Corey shared.
Cory also mentioned his enthusiasm for SpaceX's space elevators, saying "i'm doing it i think we just found our title okay um a movie that you really enjoyed really loved in 2014 ooh there's so many um i think one of the best ones was guardians of the galaxy for me good choice that was good uh lego movie was awesome too yeah that was fantastic yeah boyhood that was good oh i didn't see boyhood but i heard really good things about it so boy the premise of that movie was they followed around ethan hawk this boy who was an actor and then ethan hawkes you know after wife for like what 15 years yeah something like that so it shows the kid when he's like super young and then going through you know the awkward stages and i mean that kid was showing all his awkwardness and epic is middle school awkwardness yeah exactly to you know millions of people so it was cool i think it's really cool an indie movie that uh people definitely should see i think it's on redbox now so oh okay good yeah i want to check that one out too dude there's pictures of me in middle school i can just tell you i don't want anyone to ever see yeah exactly i mean just like the penultimate awkward airfon i would never want anyone to see this in the history of my life i mean look at them when i'm dead but hopefully not before all right well let's go ahead and wrap it up there cory i know you're available uh on instagram your username is with hearts with 2h 2hs anywhere else people can find you with hearts on instagram twitter my website withhearts.com and then learnmobilephotography.com that's new yeah those are the two basic ones learn mobile learnmobilephotography.com that's a good url to have i don't know all right well if you want to follow me on twitter i'm at airfon that's e-r-f-o and i'm also at airfon on instagram although i don't post uh nearly as often as cory nor are my images quite as compelling but you know you might see a cool pick every once in a while with my dog something that i'm eating come check it out this has been the call cass the best 30 plus super plus this episode minute apple conversation you're going to hear all week long new episodes of the cult cast come out every thursday night i want to thank everyone for listening thank you to corey for joining me the princeton gram himself folks and we'll see you guys corey oh that was like the darth vader edition thank you i didn't even have to go or anything all right and we're clear yeah good to be you you're crazy i know you're probably going to ask and so i'll just break the ice right away i will be your best man if you want me to be i'll tell you i'll do that for you i've already got the suit go fishing no officiate the wedding actually i like that i idea even more i'm not ordained or anything though i don't know if i could legally do we can make it that or i could walk her down the aisle any any one of those roles would be fine with me just let me know which one you would you would prefer yeah okay flower girl that is uh that actually seems appropriate for me

i want to thank squarespace for supporting this episode oh corey it's great to have you back on dude so good i love i love being on here i listen every week in fact i think that maybe we should have you replace i don't know maybe alex excelsior heath i know we can talk about that he's the only one i haven't been on the show with i think yeah we've been uh we've been trying to keep him away from you he gets really clingy so you know and uh obsessed he gets really obsessed i mean he comments on all your instagram let's get random like prince comments is that all he says it's just my name to prince is that all he says it's just prince that's it yeah so if you haven't followed corey on instagram you should it's instagram uh with hearts and that's with two h's so with hearts and i have to say corey your photography has gotten even better since last time we had you on i mean it just keeps getting better and so i'm excited to hear what you're doing and you know like the the camera you're using the the apps that you're using and just kind of like your process i know we talked about this once before but i kind of feel like i can't get enough of it and we had such a good response last time we had you on people love hearing that kind of stuff you had a great 2014 i did yeah it's been amazing dude and uh you announced your engagement on instagram right yeah uh posted that posted it made a youtube video that uh went crazy i guess people like seeing the guys perspective once they propose so yeah that was really fun and got on today's show got on wait you got on the today show yeah i didn't know that what happened uh so basically they saw the engagement video they cried and uh they were like hey we want to do the spot on uh you guys meeting on instagram um and so yeah it was on the today show that's so i you kind of glossed over one part of that story and i was actually gonna bring this up so i didn't know this but you actually met your fiance on instagram yeah so she followed me on instagram for a while and uh we had a mutual photographer friend and then he introduced us to each other and yeah we kind of developed our relationship online so was it through like the the instagram comments hashtag this girl's cute i'll follow her you know that is an unbelievable story so she followed you on instagram you guys kind of i mean i'm assuming you met outside of instagram and yeah okay great so it wasn't just like oh my gosh hi i love your photography lol and then yeah you sent her the roses emoji the diamond ring emoji and you know the rest is history i feel the deal and your fiance is also a pretty well known instagramer yeah yeah she's amazing she's i owe a lot of credit to her she's amazing fashion and portrait photographer she does a lot of brand and fashion blogging and stuff like that too so so on instagram bethany mariko on instagram and and as i'm sure a lot of people know your focus is you know uh uh landscape photography yep which is super popular on instagram i mean that kind of seems to be like a lot of the bigger accounts the focus on landscape uh so we'll be talking about all of corey's secrets um a little later on the show but let's start with this week's apple news cory let's get into it so actually before we talk about apple i do want to mention someone tried to burn down the mrs doubtfire house this hillary the water's boiling so corey and i before the show decided that we're actually going to quit our day jobs and go patrol do night patrol at the mrs doubtfire house right cory exactly we're gonna dress in our cop outfits and just patrol it because this house is a national treasure and we gotta make sure that that no one tries to burn it down again so as the story goes the the house actually has someone living in it it's just like a normal house now and i guess the owners came home and put out a fire that was started and this happened on monday and they haven't actually caught who who lit the fire nor could i guess why anyone would try to burn down the mrs doubtfire house maybe it was um who was the who was the uh the boyfriend and mrs doubtfire who got the drive by fruiting who is that cory i don't know you don't know his name oh pierce brosnan i was thinking maybe it could have been him i know getting getting revenge yeah right um or maybe instead of us we could get that bus driver from mrs doubtfire who thought she was really cute just to kind of swing by every now and again i like that mediterranean-looking women natural healthy just the way god made you well he broke the mold when he made me dear you made me very special it sure did that would be a tragedy to have that house burned down it's like it's like everyone's favorite movie including i'm gonna guess here it's your favorite movie huh corey yep i love robin williams i know i do too oh my gosh r.i.p okay well uh shenanigans aside let's jump into some apple stories i thought this was amazing so did you hear about the start something new campaign corey i have i have some friends who are uh a part of it you do yeah yeah so why don't you tell us what it is so basically uh following the launch of apple stores um they're doing this new campaign where it's basically like a art gallery yeah um in the stores and online where they feature like apps and how creatives are using those apps like vsco cam and you know panoramas and stuff like that so one of my good friends jared chambers who does amazing landscape uh photography uh was a part of that so yeah and and then austin mann did a pano um that was super good so it's on apple's website too so the start something new campaign as corey said they're featuring a bunch of artwork that was created on apple devices so macs you know iphones ipads photography artwork and following the the website portion of the start something new campaign they're actually opening like these essentially kind of image slash art gallery exhibits inside apple stores and i think they were just happening in major cities like new york and san francisco and stuff and then and from what i've heard they're actually going to be going worldwide so they'll be putting these up in all apple stores i think this is amazing i love seeing kind of independent artists featured and photographers featured in apple stores and when you see that kind of stuff i don't know about you corey but when i see artwork displayed that way doesn't it just kind of it builds kind of an emotional connection to the apple products i think and the apps that created it would you agree yeah totally they're highlighting you know not just what they're doing with their phones but what people in the industries you know are doing i think it's awesome i think it's a perfect sign of the new apple you know kind of broadening out and showcasing different cool cool um artwork that's awesome it's great they're indirectly they kind of present themselves as a platform for creative people which is kind of what apple products have always been known for yeah totally and i want to give a very big hello to listener roz hall so i didn't even know this our listener roz hall actually had his artwork featured um in the apple stores too a british artists father and he's actually the guy who created the cult cast uh christmas artwork last year he did this really beautiful slash insanely creepy piece of me looking like santa claus and i had a i have a small little buster and a small little leander on my knees so very apropos for the holidays and he was asking me about it on twitter if i had just seen the campaign didn't mention anything uh because he's a humble guy and i went and looked on apple's website and his name was there and i was like what the heck and i started looking through the artwork and so they featured a bunch of his artwork on there as well as part of the program so way to go roz that's really cool they did that and i'm just curious cory did your friends tell you how they got contacted by apple was it just like the like a random thing they just kind of emailed them or something um i think they um one of apple's agencies or something like that contacted them just reached out and was like do you want us to feature you in apple stores yeah they're like i guess you're like oh i don't know i don't know can i think i'll think about it yeah how much how much you're gonna give me i'll think about it i'll get back to you i was gonna do a samsung campaign so you know i'll have to get back to you guys about that um good week to be uh at nine to five mac they came out with a couple stories this week from their sources that i thought were definitely worth talking about so first off according to nine to five mac we're going to be seeing a uh an apple watch sometime in march that's going to be the release date according to their sources and they had multiple sources tell them that this is probably what was going to happen so looks like it could be likely they're also saying that they're going to be flying apple store some apple store employees from a lot of the different stores into the apple offices in california in texas to do like like a hands-on training so they kind of have to start getting prepared for this stuff so it's kind of getting i think probably tough to keep this a secret because if you're flying an employee to or bringing an employee to like an apple location from an apple store you know those guys got to talk to each other and tell each other what's going on i'm thinking so between february and march sometime we might get a release date my question to you corey are you getting one ew it depends how much it is really i thought for sure you're gonna say yes yeah we'll see i i don't know um i'm loving my plus but you know yeah we'll see if um the first version is the best um hopefully when the um api is more built out yeah yeah built out and you know maybe version two you know where people can build better apps for it but this was built that'd be good for guys like you now that you have a fiance you guys can each get one you can send your heartbeat to each other that doesn't interest you that was one of the features they highlighted on stage i know i saw that that was awesome yeah i mean that seems like something that would really help you you know get closer to your fiance so maybe you should consider it for that so as far as pricing goes because you know that's probably what everyone's wondering is we know that the sport or the uh the sport model is gonna be 349. so that's the base model oddly because there's the model up above that which we don't know the pricing on which is the steel band edition nine to five map was kind of thinking that was going to be 500 bucks again no one really knows they haven't announced it and then there's the edition edition which who knows how much that will be that's probably going to be several thousand dollars but again i kind of wonder how well a several thousand dollar i watch would sell you know it would be interesting to talk to to your fiance about this because she's into fashion yeah she's like i want a gold one she did say that yeah really okay but i mean just came out which would do you think she'd be willing to spend i don't know four thousand dollars for one uh no i wouldn't let her she's got the guns depends if uh you know you can upgrade it later kind of like the software type type thing that uh buster was talking about in the past yeah upset but still i mean even the software it's gonna be like a computer i'm sure you'll be able to upgrade the software but the hardware from what i understand is built onto this chip and that chip is soaked in a resin before they put into the watch you know so that it's covered in plastic and maybe it is interchangeable we don't know but let's just say that the watch has from a technical perspective has a one year life span so in a year they're going to release an updated version that has better hardware would you be interested or do you think that your fiance would be interested in buying a 4 000 version that's going to be out of date in a year uh us personally no but you know maybe if we're like kanye or something yeah it's gonna be the kanye's the world who are gonna be buying these maybe that's what they're planning too so but you're still kind of on the fence about getting one i'm definitely gonna get the sport model just because i feel like i have to have one and i'm curious to see how well it works but you're kind of on the fence still as from a functional perspective yeah i i'm it's gotta wow me i don't know maybe the second model yeah well i mean i'm i'm with you i mean if i didn't have to buy one just to kind of check it out i'm totally i feel exactly the way you do it has to wow me and i don't really feel like i've seen anything that has done that so far are there any features that are memorable to you that you thought wow this actually looks really cool i mean being able to just take your watch when you go on a run i think that would be awesome um you know we'll see what apps launch with it and how those all function i think the um ui of it's amazing you know how they reinvented that um so you know i want to play around with one but i don't know if you know i'll buy it right away but maybe see you know what the hiccups are and yeah we'll see you know there's going to be all sorts of weird little like bugs and stuff when they release it too because it's a first generation product unlike anything they've ever released before so for sure there's gonna be little little strange things yeah we'll see if you know developers you know rush on the gold rush of the launch of it kind of like the ipad but from what i'm hearing within the developer community you know that's not as much what what they're doing you know so they're kind of apprehensive to build apps for it yeah i think so i think a lot of you know apps have been getting pulled for that today view um thing like panic um their app got pulled we'll see what apple does if they can coerce the developers to make cool apps for it yeah the other thing too is i think from a from a watch perspective the watch has to be an extension of an app you already have so if you're playing like if you're playing a game this is probably never going to happen but if you're playing a game on your ipad you're like i want to i want to extend this experience to my watch the watch would have to in some way extend the experience of the game so there's no standalone apps on the apple watch thus far exactly the things that you already use like the instagram app i forget what functionality i heard but what if you could you're you might be excited for this what if you could take a picture from your wrist via your iphone that's mounted to a tripod then selfies will go next level i mean i think that belfies might get a lot more popular too yeah selfie sticks and then and then the butt selfies because other notorious notoriously difficult to take when you have to hold your iphone behind you like that awkward position those with the longest arms win on that so if you could like get it up on a tripod or something boom that'd be awesome oh hopefully hopefully it's not all notifications you know like games that just notify you when you know you get free bonus lives or you know stuff like that so i'm honestly worried about that i'm honestly worried about that that's going to be what it is oh you got a text message oh you have an email oh you should instagram today oh your friend just instagrammed i mean that's the stuff that i kind of feel is not that valuable yeah and hopefully i don't know apple's been kind of weird with their notifications too that project read spam they did over the holidays that was kind of weird oh dude i that is one of my biggest annoyances on ios whenever developers send me a notification that's trying to get me to buy something i that's that's such a big no-no in my book like you should never ever do that and there have been several games that i that i play that have sent me notifications that say something along the lines of we're having a sale on our additional content today now you can buy it for three bucks yeah i i mean like apple in their guidelines say that's a no-no but then you know they're doing it themselves and then i guess over the whole new year they did a survey where they said like hey where have you engaged you know seen the most growth developers um on your apps and one of the one of the things was push notifications so like they're i don't know i don't know what they're you know they're probably like push notifications to sell stuff yeah so it's like a marketing survey that apple did to developers yeah um and you know one of the of the many questions was you know where have you seen your mo in the most growth engagement and one of them was you know push notifications so push notification spam yeah exactly oh that drives me come on phil phil yeah no big no-no phil gosh okay one other big apple story this week so you guys are probably all probably totally aware that nine to five mac published a a piece about what they thought the next mac macbook was going to look like the macbook air this is the long-awaited 12-inch model that we've talked about on this show a ton and so let me just run some of the specifics by you corey and then i want to know if you think this is something that you would buy so apparently apple is developing an all-new macbook air for launch in 2015 with a totally different design which is going to be getting rid of a lot of the standard ports that we all know and love like usb uh the sd card slot uh magsafe so the actual power adapter that apple has used forever and lightning and all the ports but it's gonna be smaller so it's gonna be smaller than the 13 a little bit bigger than the 11 inch macbook pro but a little bit thicker a little bit narrower but it's gonna have a 12 inch screen and they're going to be kind of shrinking or squishing the keys together not shrinking the keys are still going to be normal size according 99 mac but they're going to be pushing the keys together to kind of make space uh for the smaller size and and the the macbook is going to have hardly any bezel at all so the screen is going to have hardly any bezel the outside of the actual macbook is going to kind of wrap tightly around the keyboard so they're trying to make this thing really super duper small in fact internally they were saying that it's being referred to as the macbook stealth because it's so small and portable here's here's the thing though so fanless actually also clickless trackpad which we talked about before is a touch only the speaker ports are going to be doubling as an escape for heat but here's the big thing so they're going to be switching to usbc which is all new usb connection that is able to drive displays just like lightning so you wouldn't need to have the lightning ports on there and can also power the computer itself so the only adapter or the only port that you're gonna have on the new macbook pro is one usbc ports maybe two they don't know for sure and that's it no other connections but you will you will get a super lightweight higher resolution screen macbook pro they didn't say if it was retina or not they just said higher resolution does this sound like a product that you would actually want to buy corey uh no that kind of echoes my feeling about it i i'm sure there are people out there that would love to buy a lighter weight macbook pro or something that's super slim even more slim than it is now macbook air sorry more slim than it is now even lighter than it is now but to not have any ports on it at all i maybe that works for the average consumer but i use a lot of my ports on my computer do you oh yeah all of them i feel like maybe this is geared towards you know younger students or something like that where it's something they can tote around everywhere as their first computer or something so it's interesting that you should bring that up um because i i've been reading about this online to hear what people think and some other people have postulated this that's exactly what this is this is going to be a lower end computer so it's it's going to be significantly less expensive than the current macbook airs and the reason it's going to be so inexpensive is because it's just not going to have a lot of whiz-bang features built in it's going to be great for browsing the internet maybe doing some typing watching videos and that's probably it and so the people that would buy this are students people who are looking for a lower cost macbook and don't really want to have a macbook pro or a macbook air because they consider those computers too expensive it's certainly not for me dude because i'm looking at my computer right now i use i never thought i would do this but i use both lightning ports i use my usb right now i actually also have a thunderbolt docking station i have stuff plugged into that i think i might have i'm looking i'm adjusting my mic here i might have one my sd card slot is free and one usb port is free that's it other than that they're they're almost always totally full so i think the big question is going to be does it have retina or not if it had a retina display would that change your opinion corey i don't think it's for me i don't know i think they're going to sell a bazillion of them just because you know kids want you know some cool computer they can play minecraft on you know dude i don't know minecraft if i was young and that came out i i would totally buy it yeah maybe it has beats audio in it or something oh my gosh i hope not i hope it does not have beats audio but yeah if i was young i'd be like mom i need this i'll be begging my mom for this all day long if it was just some inexpensive mac because i guess i don't consider a thousand dollar computer to be that expensive in the apple space when you're in the apple space a thousand dollars for a computer seems like nothing but my computer was twenty four hundred dollars so looking at it from that perspective a thousand bucks seems affordable to me do you have a pretty nice macbook pro uh yeah i have a 13-inch retina but you know if i was a kid and you know it was a lower model i would i would love that you know back in the day totally yeah totally especially when there are pcs out there that cost 400 bucks totally so i think i'm probably out of touch as far as pricing is concerned because there are a lot of pcs out there that are super cheap and maybe that's who apple's going after they're gonna maybe release like a 600 model we'll see okay before we hop into all the great mobile photography chat i do want to say thank you to squarespace for supporting this episode guys have you been to thecultcast.com did you know we built that website in a matter of hours on squarespace and i think it looks pretty gersh dern good like go to it scroll down you'll see the cult cast logo turned into something special that was all built into squarespace it was all drag and drop it was super easy to do the design looks good and unlike building a website yourself on any other you know web platform with squarespace they do all this magical encoding on the back end when you upload image images build image galleries so that your website looks great on any device that visits so if you go to theculcast.com on your computer it looks good if you go on your iphone it looks great we didn't do any of that optimization squarespace did they have a bunch of new templates now too with squarespace seven and you can integrate your email address into your website so you could have you know airfon at thecultcast.com which i do have and do that quite easily which before it was kind of a pain in the arse to to kind of have that email integration but now with their partnership with google super easy to do you have access to a zillion stock images via getty images and now they have cover pages which i was mentioning earlier which are these impactful beautiful one-page websites that are really good if you just need to have a presence on the web if you don't have a presence in the web you're doing something as a professional as an artist as someone in you know any kind of professional capacity maybe you're a real estate agent or something and you just need a place where people can go to see your face maybe a few sentences on what you do and an email address cover pages are the perfect way to do that all this comes of course with beautiful simple design really easy to use back in to build your website 24 7 customer support and it's only eight bucks a month when you sign up at squarespace.com and you can do a free trial no credit card needed just sign up for a free trial you'll be up and running in no time and of course every website comes with a free e-commerce website all you have to do is just build it out boom all of a sudden you're ready to start selling slang in some stuff buster's beard kits we're working on that for next year probably gonna have a holiday edition with some of those little like um beard oil for sure that's that's an easy seller that that stuff sells itself but i was thinking some ornaments you've probably seen those online i like that did you see that picture online with that guy with uh the ornaments in his beard yeah yeah that was my idea dude they totally stole that for me i'm getting and zero cents from every one of those transactions and i was talking to buster i'm like we need to write this wrong so we're gonna make a chest here model i mean we have all these great ideas and we just we have our e-commerce site is gonna be up and running just slang in that stuff left and right i want to thank squarespace for supporting this episode oh by the way uh when you uh use codecast you'll save 10 off your order and if you buy a year of hosting you get a free domain name squarespace.com thank you squarespace for supporting this episode all righty prinstagram let's go into the nitty gritty shall we on let's just go deep i mean i guess for me the first question besides process besides what apps you use besides the camera you're using these days i just want to know what's it like to be you you have 440 000 instagram followers and you're always posting these great pictures i mean are you just going out every day into the wilderness and finding these great sceneries to capture i mean how does that whole thing work yeah i just live in the woods non-stop um so you smell wonderful you don't shower very often noted yeah no i don't know i i travel a lot uh it's been awesome um we do travel a lot because i was like you're always going to these different places is that like throughout the week or like is that like a lot each month like how often do you travel yeah probably like a couple times a month like two two times a month okay like this last couple months have been more crazy like we went from oregon to whistler to texas to switzerland like you went to switzerland yeah yeah we did a um campaign with swiss army knife wow so we went to headquarters where they build swiss army knives and but the founders and uh about the founders of swiss army knife or yeah like tour knox is what yeah victorinox yeah so we got to meet them and that was for wired magazine um so we shot the ad for them for last month's issue of wired for victorinox and uh yeah it was awesome so yeah random cool trips like that and getting to see different landscapes and it's been amazing let me ask you this how do you choose where to go because i mean you're like i'm going to texas i'm going to the wilderness i'm going here and there how do you decide where you're going to go and take pictures uh it's totally random so do you spin a globe and put your finger down or yeah i usually comes up like what's around um our schedule if like we have a photo job or something in a certain area or like we're going to la next week um for for a couple shoots and uh so we'll we'll go around and then take photos around there and you know have awesome photos that we can use on instagram and post and share those throughout the month or whenever so i i think when instagram first started it was very like hey share what your moment is right now but now since instagram's so big and uh i think a lot of people are using it differently nowadays that it's it's more like a tailored art gallery for a lot of photographers that i'm friends with so you know we're showcasing you know some photos that we've you know been creating over the last month or you know however long um so it's been crazy because you know iphone the quality of its on instagram is so close to dslr because of instagram's compression rates so it's like you can't really tell the difference between a dslr image nowadays and you know iphone 6 plus or a6 camera so yeah if you told me you're using a dslr i would believe you because your pictures the dynamic range that they that they appear to have looks like a dslr yeah some of them i have been okay so some of them are dslr yeah yeah i've been mixing it up lately um just because um i like the dslr sometimes better for those photos so you know it's a it's a it's a funny thing because it was started on the iphone and then kind of that got so far that you know now i'm shooting on both so uh for me it's it's been fun because when i started on instagram i wasn't a professional photographer or anything like that i was a graphic designer building iphone apps you know so um it's a funny progression from iphone shooting that only to shooting dslr and mixing up the two now it's been fun so you're going to be going to la next week so do you just look at google maps and say hey what's around la that we could go to and and shoot yeah it's cool because like geotags and you know people have already you know kind of already location scouted for you you know on instagram so yeah you know following people in different areas is cool because you can kind of see the cool spots to go to if you're traveling there so you know hitting up people in the area and connecting with them and you know seeing if they want to go out and shoot or you know stuff like that to discover new areas is always the best thing so you're also using instagram for discovery oh yeah totally you met your fiance on instagram you're using it to take pictures it's your job you're also using it to travel you are true you are the prince of instagram truly that is the perfect title so okay you are at a location you're kind of walking around um and you're looking for inspiration i'm assuming what what cameras are you using you're using the iphone 6 i know that or the six plus right yeah i'm using the six plus and then i have um a sony rx100 to do video vlog so we've been documenting our trips like trips to switzerland and stuff like that and putting those collecting those up and putting those on youtube and sharing those is like vlogs trips oh you can what's our trip youtube what's your youtube url uh it's youtube.com slash with hearts okay i kind of guess co at the end with heart taken yeah yeah so we i share those so i'm shooting iphone i'm documenting with video and then i shoot dslr uh with my canon uh 5d mark iii so oh yeah the canon 5d mark iii me too yeah i love it you love it yeah i like it too i i switched from nikon just to switch over to the canon world for a while it's just to try it i like it a lot there are pros and cons to it i think the thing that surprises me most about the canon versus the nikon is just how fast it shows where like i have paint and stuff rubbing off on my 5d mark ii and it spends most of its life being babied are you having any issues with yours at all um i think you see normal wear and tear uh i haven't that much um you know i keep pretty good care of it but dude me too that's what i thought yeah anyway total tangent not not at all relevant um so you're using a canon 5d mark iii you're using your iphone 6 plus tell us what you think about the six plus compared to other mobile cameras that you've used um i've been loving it yeah a lot of people have been when they first came out i guess some of them are having issues with the camera um just you know the dynamic range on it and it was showing up kind of fuzzy or painted painted like um you know once you've you know dived down to the pixel level but uh yeah it's been awesome i i think it's you know some of the images i actually like better from my my six compared to dslr which is crazy but i know it's crazy to even be able to say that isn't it yeah it's it's it's awesome i love it yeah i i mean i'm i'm continually surprised by how how great a picture is my six plus takes it's amazing and in low light photography it's not good and if you listen to my interview with david hobby um in cult cast 160 in the cast second hour we did he kind of talks about that a little bit so not great for low light but in balanced lighting situations the iphone 6 plus is incredible i mean truly sometimes you would have a hard time unless you dug down into the pixels you'd have a hard time telling you know what's dslr and what's actually iphone 6 plus yeah with with low light it's pretty cool because there's some apps that you know like cortex cam which basically takes like five photos at different apertures and we'll combine them all together so it's less grain on the photos and that's with your iphone and then there's a iphone app called manual and you basically can adjust the shutter speed ios iso and lock it for your on your iphone and shoot with that so it's like a dslr so it gives you um kind of uh fine-tuned controls over aperture and shutter exactly yeah i think alex actually picked this for one of his favorite rave picks a while back oh yeah it's awesome you can change the white balance on it like it's awesome so it gives you fine-tuned control over the photo attributes on your iphone i'm writing this down because i'm gonna pull all this stuff in the show notes by the way um all this stuff will be in the show notes it's also on thecultcast.com where we you know post all the show notes it's also on call to mac there's show notes everywhere there are also show notes in the uh actual episode that we embed so whatever you know podcast app you're using they're all there so manual that's like what three bucks yeah i think so something around that i think it was on sale around christmas for like 9.99 but yeah the the app developer is awesome dude and it's a good app for sure so as long as we're on apps what other what other apps are in your repertoire that you're using frequently yeah i i use vsco cam for that's still a popular one for you yeah oh yeah that's my bread and butter for sure can i ask you with viscocam i i've used it a lot too i like it but what is it about that app that you really love because i kind of dabble in you know in and out of it but i haven't really fell in love with it you know like a lot of yeah so when you open it i mean you have all these amazing kind of film-like presets so they you know take a lot of time to fine-tune um their presets you know they have some for lightroom and stuff so it mimics film so a lot of the tones on it i i love because it reminds me a lot of film um so i like i like that aspect i love that you can control the amount um of the filter on it their fine tune adjustments are awesome um you mean the filters themselves are just in like the photo adjustments yeah so you can uh adjust the the photo and then apply a filter and then adjust that or you know maybe even layer a couple filters together like if you only use it halfway oh yeah what's your favorite filter pack do you know i love mm5 p5 the a's are awesome so yeah when you download the app there's tons of cool uh filter packs that you can play around with and they do a lot of sponsored kind of free collaborations they did one with levi's remember that one yeah yeah a bunch of cool stuff so i love it um it's a really cool app can any other apps that you find yourself using frequently um i do use filterstorm and i use that to retouch a little bit depending if there's like something in the photo that i feel like is distracting i'll use that to take that out of the photo i mean like if there's something like you're taking a picture and you see there's some guy doing like like showing his nipples or something like photobombing you like you pull him out of it yeah that's a really bad example but why not i could take it completely out of the photo okay so or if there's like a pop pop can in the you know grass or something like that okay you know you could clone that out you know our example is much better than mine i'm gonna give you that it's uh i don't know why some guy would photobomb your picture with his nipples but i you know with the guys i work with this is me it could very potentially be buster or alex that's true so yeah anyone blame it on alex okay so filter storm helps you take things that you don't want out of your pictures exactly okay so yeah okay and uh i i went over um i actually uh come like a month ago i launched learnmobilephotography.com um so if people want to go to that uh it links to a place in my website where it's it's a free class on the basics of mobile photography oh that's great yeah so i go over you know scouting and capturing lighting and editing uh you know how to develop community and grow as a photographer and then i went through my whole editing process and this was about a year and a half ago two years it was a class i did for skillshare and then i made it free so this last month i made it free and so i have a list of all my apps that i use and yeah so uh i think the community aspect of it is also really important because you're i mean i think you're very good at building community you know around what you do you're always taking pictures of people that you that you put on instagram um if you could give away a couple tips like maybe one important tip for building community how would you what would you say to people uh not be shy i mean like uh important yes yeah not to be shy and go up to people that you you know look up to you know shoot them email a lot of people i know you know who do have like a lot of followers they read their email you know we all check our emails so i think connecting with you know people you look up to and um and then finding people that are like you and like the same things that you you do and you know will encourage you to grow um i think that was huge for me at the beginning was you know finding a crew of people that wanted to go out and adventure and take photos and you know have fun so i think yeah building community finding people around you and then not being afraid to reach out to people so as far as building a following on instagram i mean it was it was probably a lot different when you started because instagram was so much it was it was new kind of when you started yeah it's so clear what it was what's that try to explain what like oh yeah i use this app called instagram i don't know if you've heard of it instagram yeah what is that and then and now obviously it's so busy there's so many people taking pictures could you give a tip yeah kim kardashian on there is she oh yeah she has like the most followers i think let's see here follow okay check okay what's a tip or two that you give to people to i don't want to say get followers i hate i don't think that should ever be your intention to get followers you know but obviously you want to be able to share your your photography with other people how do you how do you build a community on instagram that's a better way to do it yeah and i think it's totally finding people in your city first and you know and hanging out with them and i don't know i think it's a slow process and i think it's should be organic and you know i mean there's people that have so many amount of followers and then zero engagement and so you're kind of like what's going on there you know um so by engagement you mean like they're not interacting with the people that yeah so people you know have you know 800 000 or 2 million followers like mace that rapper dude you know he had 2 million followers and then you know instagram deleted all their spam accounts and he went down to 200k you know so it's like kidding wow yeah so it's very inflated you know they don't have you know uh to amount of followers to likes to comments it was very not organic i think the key is you know build a community that's organic and you know friends that you enjoy doing life with and i think that's should should be your your focus no matter what and um i don't i think followers will come when you're showing who you really are and um not you know as an artist you know showing your your work and being authentic so i think that is a as an extraordinary tip and in fact if people were to ask me you know how what was one tip you give give people to build a podcast yeah i mean that's always what i tell people i'm like you got to do something that you love because it's a lot of hard work and i think that you need to have fun doing it because if you have fun doing it they'll have fun listening to it totally and that's what makes them want to come back and listen to the show or you know look at your artwork or view your photographs is is that that aspect of it coming through the work yeah you being you i think the world doesn't need another you know copy of me or anyone else they need um you know that unique person you know to to bring their light to the world you know who they are yeah i think that's key i feel like you're making appointed comments about the haircut that i got that looks exactly like yours and the glasses yeah i got it look just like yours it's okay i was gonna change my instagram name to with passion with farts with far oh even better that's that's definitely taken that's definitely take it it is yeah you're right that's what i should do and take really bad landscape photos um to your comment about seattle haircuts dude you nailed it everyone in seattle has the same haircut now i feel like oh yeah you go to ballard i know all you need to do is hipster town oh it's hipster hipster central capital usa yeah free market too all the neighborhoods now everyone that's like exactly yours yeah mackamore with a beard yes yes you gotta have the sleeves the tatted sleeves too yeah are the are the ear gauges still in are those still in i don't know are those kind of phasing out i think those are maybe out and they're regretting their decision i always told my cousin when he was going to school if you want to make a ton of money when you grow up you need to become an earlobe plastic surgeon exactly because all the people in their 20s that have gauges that decide to take them out when they're 40 are gonna need to get their ear holes fixed they don't look like loose butthole and they're gonna need to go someone who's really talented so if you're that guy dude the sky's the limit for your career yeah endless supply clientele so back on topic let's talk about actual editing settings so you take a photo and you're like this is great so i want to take out the guy flashing his nipples in the background because i don't want that on instagram what else are you looking to adjust uh depends if i shoot it uh sometimes i shoot um so the exposure is a little darker so it retains uh you know detail in the photo so it's not blown out so that the highlights or have details what you're saying yes so if you if you shoot it overexposed a lot of times you lose detail in the highlights yeah um you know you can't you can't get that back uh from the photo um so you know adjust the exposure levels contrast um add a little bit of sharpening um like you're boosting your shadows a lot because your photos if i had to describe the with hearts touch your photos always look very dreamy they have like this glow to them and everyone in them looks great and they have this airy quality to them what would you say how do you add that to the photos yeah i do uh boost um the shadows a little bit um just so it has that kind of um atmosphere motion to the foot i think that's one of the keys that i love to do is bring that to a photo where people are like inspired from it um so yeah i totally do that do you feel like a big part of it also is maybe just taking photos in beautiful light and starting from that perspective yeah if it's you know blown out and harsh day in texas you know it's it's not going to be fun um to shoot because you know everything's going to be super um blown out which means that you know it's going to be harsh light um so it's perfect that we live in the northwest and i know we are getting this amazing cloud cover we have diffusion all year round softbox non-stop softbox so it's funny because people that don't know anything about photography just you know your everyday person who just takes pictures they make comments like oh it's sunny we lucked out it's sunny outside right so that's going to improve the quality of the pictures in fact i was just taking some portraits recently and it became sunny outside and i was grumbling to myself and i was like this is going to suck right cause taking pictures in direct sunlight is very difficult you have to have the right gear or you have to find shade and they were really excited oh look how beautiful it is outside these pictures are gonna be amazing but yeah amazingly bad everyone's gonna look like they are a zombie because they're gonna be totally blown out yeah you gotta wait till golden hour which is like great you know before sunset that that hour so is that are you looking for those times to shoot is that is that a tactic that you use yeah oh yeah totally so we'll get up early in the morning and shoot uh when the sun's nice and then break during the mid mid day when it's nasty um and then shoot at you know before sunset when the light's really nice and um you know you get that cool tones so that do you find that the iphone performs okay in in light that's diminishing quickly because one of the things that david hobby was saying when we had him on was he found that his iphone just couldn't really take great pictures is that not the case for you um it's hit and miss uh it depends what you're shooting if you're shooting you know a sunset you know right before i think it'd be awesome but you know after the sunset and it's like he was saying that he likes to shoot right after the sun goes down for like half an hour or something um and that's a lot harder because you know your you know your sensor can't read that much you know information you know it's it's smaller uh to get let all that light in um so yeah i i think it's it depends um i think you can control uh you know it with like a manual that manual app um so i i personally like it shooting on iphone before sunset but after you know it usually gets kind of um gross and dark yeah it doesn't take too long before the iphone just is like yep i give up do you want to use the led flash i don't see a lot of that in your photography you should start integrating the led flash work um let's talk about framing and inspiration i i know the creative process is hard it's hard to describe it's it's hard to articulate you just have to kind of experience it but when you're out there when you're walking around you know how do you what's the process that you go to or maybe you could describe the feelings you get when you when you stumble across something and you're like this this looks like it has potential and so you decide to begin shooting it what is that experience like for you uh it's like a rush it's like a high you get crazy uh bethany you know my fiance will tell you she'll she'll like lose me because i'll just run off and you know get so excited yes go try to find that moment and just get pumped on life because you're looking at beauty and i think trying to capture that's key and i don't know i think when when we're in that moment and the settings right that you know nature you know it's beautiful you're you're kind of in awe and you're just trying to capture that that moment in time the best that you can so i identify with that so much you kind of you do you kind of get lost in this in this state if you will where you are totally focused you know there's something there that you want to just describe you know photographically to people you want to translate to people and you're not quite sure how you're going to do it but you're kind of just following your nose and totally you know you're gonna have to take a bunch of photos and that's actually something that stuck with me from last time the very first time actually that you and i spoke on the show you're like i take maybe 300 pictures and i might use what maybe one or two of those so is that still the case you just take a lot of photos and then you pick the one that really yeah keep a clean camera roll so oh so what did you get the 16 gigabyte iphone 6 plus no i i went 64 just because uh you know the downloads for upgrade software is like eight gigs or whatever you know so yeah that's true yeah good point you have to otherwise you have to plug it into your computer just to update the software exactly so i got the 128 and uh the guy who robbed me got a 64. oh yeah so he got less than me that makes me feel good about that yeah what's the update on that oh dude oh as long as we're talking about it i i'm i'm still i'm still trying to get the cop just just to give two shots about the entire thing i'm i well the only thing i'm waiting for is the footage from the 7-eleven and the 7-eleven footage they won't give it to me because i'm not a police officer and they're like we have to give the police so they have it and they're like it shows the person's face it shows the entire crime and we want to give it to the police and we've tried contacting them and they just they won't come get it so that's where i'm at i'm trying to motivate this police officer to go get this footage and give it to me and then once they do that i'm just going to release everything i have to reddit because i'm kind of at a dead end like i i followed all the leads that i could and we haven't really gotten anywhere productive so i'm going to release everything to write it and i'm going to hope that someone recognizes the car or recognizes him and it's people said we need to do a sting you know just repost it dude yeah oh yeah i tried that actually so funny enough i tried reposting it on craigslist and i i listed it at a ridiculously high price so no one who could no one who was actually interested in buying one would be interested to buy it right i was like 13 or 1400 or something i'm like if you had money to actually buy this there's no way you would contact me because it's too expensive so i did that and i got a bite and somebody contacted me and was like hey do you how many iphones do you have was the first question they asked me which was funny because that was the exact same question um i was asked when i was corresponding with the person who who took the phone from me and i was like dude oh my gosh this is crazy right but that lead kind of fizzled the person ended up just breaking contact with me and not following through spooked he got spooked maybe he was like dude this guy this guy is on to me he knows so he's gonna come with his mace this time so that guy got spooked but here's the other thing too is i started texting again with the number that i was texting with before which the which the crook owned and i have an ongoing texting thread with this with this number still still to this day but when i do hey how are you no no no i i totally it's a long story but i i tricked them into thinking that i had their wallet i was like i just started off the conversation with do you want it back or not and i just waited and the person got back to me and they're like i'm sorry like what what back i'm like i'm like your wallet do you want your wallet this is i made up some name this is john right and i got a text back they're like oh yes yes thank you so much right let's meet up yeah it's totally made up and this person is is texting me with me now and saying that they want their wallet back so i this story kind of continues on for four or five days till finally they actually admitted hey look i actually this is not the person you think it is this is not my wallet and i was like oh dang but anyway this led to a conversation with the person on this number what i don't know is is this the same person who robbed me or is this someone totally new because you know like these numbers get recycled when they don't get used so if like the crook stopped using the number that i was texting with it would have gotten assigned to somebody else yeah i feel like the story right now is like serial podcast part two airpod edition people thought i was crazy they're like i cannot believe that you're you're taking it this far you're obsessed i'm like i'm not obsessed it's actually a fun game for me and if we catch him great if not you know that's fine why i tried my best but it is interesting just to see where it goes right because now i'm texting with this number again it could very well be the criminal and so i'm trying to get them to give me their address so i can like do a scope out of their house and see if the car is there and dude if you want to come with me man let's do it we'll arm up we'll roll out in a bat with the bat i got my golf club actually i don't even have a golf club i'll have to buy one but i've got some blunt objects in my house i have an old dell like hit them with i mean we'll figure something out you have a guard dog right so yeah i have a i have a ferocious uh 12 pound chihuahua slash toy terrier who i can just throw onto them taco bell yeah oh man it should go crazy on their jugular blood sprays everywhere it's gonna be glorious the ultimate payback um where were we photography uh i think that might be all the questions i had we kind of talked about the settings that you adjust um any particular hardware that you that you use in your photography that you know we should know about um there's awesome stuff yeah you can get a gorillapod uh those are awesome dude those are great i've been meaning to get one of those can you describe what they are uh it's basically like an adjustable like tripod that has like these tentacles type thing you know each bar you can adjust and wrap around like a bar or anything like that you want to put the tripod on so it's really flexible and um it's nice so it's kind of for holding your iphone in i don't know strange situations they're not just standard like on the ground shots totally and you could take like time lapse you know uh you know use average camera pro or that app to take long exposures and average camera pro yeah that's an awesome thing to so you can get that that you know those shots where it looks like the water is glassy like super glass you know that's like you know 100 photos in one you know and they just put them all together so the water looks like glass do you ever use that for any of your shots yeah i've used it yeah interesting any other hardware that you find to be useful um i think was it buster alex uh recommended moment lenses and they're a seattle company and they developed yeah yeah they're awesome they're super nice guys i actually helped kind of test one of them when they were launching their kickstarter but yeah they did a kickstarter and they they've launched so now you can even buy them um i think they have them for six and six plus they have like these mounts on the back and you can basically put a telephoto or a wide angle lens on it so you get you know more um you know in your you know more landscape and your foot up so it's awesome so moment lens is really good so those are the ones that they you install a case right onto your iphone and then yeah all these lenses on there it's like this little bar type thing that you attach to the back of your phone and uh it sits over your lens so you can just attach you know lenses non-stop and change them interchange them super easily cool okay moment lenses anything else you got i think that's it yeah okay fantastic well dude thank you for sharing all of your secret tips with us yeah i love this inspires people to i know we have a lot of photographers that listen to this show i hope it inspires people to really go out there and improve you know and and maybe learn about some new apps that can help them you know take better photos and different lighting conditions and stuff but more than anything else just to know it's a struggle i mean you have to go out there and do you just have to go through motions right that's the secret you got to go out there and do it and and just start somewhere and build a habit yeah build a habit and you know corey you obviously have developed a very good sense of style with your photos and that's taken a lot of time and a lot of effort and that's what people that's the goal right people have to go out there and really just kind of do this thing over and over again until they develop that same sense of style about their own photography that you have yeah and i think that's being okay with you being you you know and bringing your voice to the world and who you are and what makes you happy and what you want to post you know post what makes you brings you joy and you know stay humble i think that's the the best stay humble for sure and you know it's interesting you'll go back a year after you've started and look at the work that you've done and you'll be like man that's terrible i even do that with cult cast every time i listen to an old castle i'm like oh my gosh that's so bad you know i've improved a lot since i've started and i still have so long to go but that you're you're in the journey and i think it's it's good to recognize you're on a learning curve yeah and i think as long as you're looking not comparing yourself with others and you're just trying to be the best you i think then the pressure is off to you know try to be where someone else is at because you are developing where you are and you know a month from now you'll be you know way farther along yeah yeah i'm always trying to become the next radio lab do you ever listen to radio lab i have it now oh my gosh one of the best podcasts you know on itunes incredible just one probably my my favorite podcast of all time radiolab is just the guy the guys that do it tell incredible stories but more so than that they use sounds to create these immense rich dense incredible inspiring audio landscapes that tell the story for them so they don't have to use words all the time and it's just an absolute journey every single one of them is so beautifully done and well told and inspiring if you haven't listened to those hopefully i've sold you go listen to one of them they have this one about space oh my gosh oh especially if you're a space buff go check that out okay corey before i let you go um i thought it'd be fun to wrap up with two questions um this these are not photography related whatsoever so clear your mind clear your soul of that of those thoughts tell me a a a favorite piece of tech that you've liked in the last year anything anything at all dang what kind of technology do i have to own it uh no anything that you thought was cool in last year is fine too you don't don't necessarily even need to own it oh i think the you know elon musk and their space explorations super rad spacex yeah i think spacex is killing it so i'd say um be so down to you know be the first instagrammer in space oh man that's one of my goals for 2015. i don't know hopefully it happens that's that's pretty aggressive timeline maybe 2017 i don't even know are they successfully setting people into space yet didn't one of their things recently explode yeah i think one of the companies did but you know you know there has to be another one so maybe that was virginia elevator yeah elevator 2015 space elevators i'm doing it i think we just found our title okay um a movie that you really enjoyed really loved in 2014 ooh there's so many um i think one of the best ones was guardians of the galaxy for me good choice that was good uh lego movie was awesome too yeah that was fantastic yeah boyhood that was good oh i didn't see boyhood but i heard really good things about it so boy the premise of that movie was they followed around ethan hawk this boy who was an actor and then ethan hawkes you know after wife for like what 15 years yeah something like that so it shows the kid when he's like super young and then going through you know the awkward stages and i mean that kid was showing all his awkwardness and epic is middle school awkwardness yeah exactly to you know millions of people so it was cool i think it's really cool an indie movie that uh people definitely should see i think it's on redbox now so oh okay good yeah i want to check that one out too dude there's pictures of me in middle school i can just tell you i don't want anyone to ever see yeah exactly i mean just like the penultimate awkward airfon i would never want anyone to see this in the history of my life i mean look at them when i'm dead but hopefully not before all right well let's go ahead and wrap it up there cory i know you're available uh on instagram your username is with hearts with 2h 2hs anywhere else people can find you with hearts on instagram twitter my website withhearts.com and then learnmobilephotography.com that's new yeah those are the two basic ones learn mobile learnmobilephotography.com that's a good url to have i don't know all right well if you want to follow me on twitter i'm at airfon that's e-r-f-o and i'm also at airfon on instagram although i don't post uh nearly as often as cory nor are my images quite as compelling but you know you might see a cool pick every once in a while with my dog something that i'm eating come check it out this has been the call cass the best 30 plus super plus this corey it's great to have you back on dude so good i love i love being on here i listen every week in fact i think that maybe we should have you replace i don't know maybe alex excelsior heath i know we can talk about that he's the only one i haven't been on the show with i think yeah we've been uh we've been trying to keep him away from you he gets really clingy so you know and uh obsessed he gets really obsessed i mean he comments on all your instagram let's get random like prince comments is that all he says it's just my name to prince is that all he says it's just prince that's it yeah so if you haven't followed corey on instagram you should it's instagram uh with hearts and that's with two h's so with hearts and i have to say corey your photography has gotten even better since last time we had you on i mean it just keeps getting better and so i'm excited to hear what you're doing and you know like the the camera you're using the the apps that you're using and just kind of like your process i know we talked about this once before but i kind of feel like i can't get enough of it and we had such a good response last time we had you on people love hearing that kind of stuff you had a great 2014 i did yeah it's been amazing dude and uh you announced your engagement on instagram right yeah uh posted that posted it made a youtube video that uh went crazy i guess people like seeing the guys perspective once they propose so yeah that was really fun and got on today's show got on wait you got on the today show yeah i didn't know that what happened uh so basically they saw the engagement video they cried and uh they were like hey we want to do the spot on uh you guys meeting on instagram um and so yeah it was on the today show that's so i you kind of glossed over one part of that story and i was actually gonna bring this up so i didn't know this but you actually met your fiance on instagram yeah so she followed me on instagram for a while and uh we had a mutual photographer friend and then he introduced us to each other and yeah we kind of developed our relationship online so was it through like the the instagram comments hashtag this girl's cute i'll follow her you know that is an unbelievable story so she followed you on instagram you guys kind of i mean i'm assuming you met outside of instagram and yeah okay great so it wasn't just like oh my gosh hi i love your photography lol and then yeah you sent her the roses emoji the diamond ring emoji and you know the rest is history i feel the deal and your fiance is also a pretty well known instagramer yeah yeah she's amazing she's i owe a lot of credit to her she's amazing fashion and portrait photographer she does a lot of brand and fashion blogging and stuff like that too so so on instagram bethany mariko on instagram and and as i'm sure a lot of people know your focus is you know uh uh landscape photography yep which is super popular on instagram i mean that kind of seems to be like a lot of the bigger accounts the focus on landscape uh so we'll be talking about all of corey's secrets um a little later on the show but let's start with this week's apple news cory let's get into it so actually before we talk about apple i do want to mention someone tried to burn down the mrs doubtfire house this hillary the water's boiling so corey and i before the show decided that we're actually going to quit our day jobs and go patrol do night patrol at the mrs doubtfire house right cory exactly we're gonna dress in our cop outfits and just patrol it because this house is a national treasure and we gotta make sure that that no one tries to burn it down again so as the story goes the the house actually has someone living in it it's just like a normal house now and i guess the owners came home and put out a fire that was started and this happened on monday and they haven't actually caught who who lit the fire nor could i guess why anyone would try to burn down the mrs doubtfire house maybe it was um who was the who was the uh the boyfriend and mrs doubtfire who got the drive by fruiting who is that cory i don't know you don't know his name oh pierce brosnan i was thinking maybe it could have been him i know getting getting revenge yeah right um or maybe instead of us we could get that bus driver from mrs doubtfire who thought she was really cute just to kind of swing by every now and again i like that mediterranean-looking women natural healthy just the way god made you well he broke the mold when he made me dear you made me very special it sure did that would be a tragedy to have that house burned down it's like it's like everyone's favorite movie including i'm gonna guess here it's your favorite movie huh corey yep i love robin williams i know i do too oh my gosh r.i.p okay well uh shenanigans aside let's jump into some apple stories i thought this was amazing so did you hear about the start something new campaign corey i have i have some friends who are uh a part of it you do yeah yeah so why don't you tell us what it is so basically uh following the launch of apple stores um they're doing this new campaign where it's basically like a art gallery yeah um in the stores and online where they feature like apps and how creatives are using those apps like vsco cam and you know panoramas and stuff like that so one of my good friends jared chambers who does amazing landscape uh photography uh was a part of that so yeah and and then austin mann did a pano um that was super good so it's on apple's website too so the start something new campaign as corey said they're featuring a bunch of artwork that was created on apple devices so macs you know iphones ipads photography artwork and following the the website portion of the start something new campaign they're actually opening like these essentially kind of image slash art gallery exhibits inside apple stores and i think they were just happening in major cities like new york and san francisco and stuff and then and from what i've heard they're actually going to be going worldwide so they'll be putting these up in all apple stores i think this is amazing i love seeing kind of independent artists featured and photographers featured in apple stores and when you see that kind of stuff i don't know about you corey but when i see artwork displayed that way doesn't it just kind of it builds kind of an emotional connection to the apple products i think and the apps that created it would you agree yeah totally they're highlighting you know not just what they're doing with their phones but what people in the industries you know are doing i think it's awesome i think it's a perfect sign of the new apple you know kind of broadening out and showcasing different cool cool um artwork that's awesome it's great they're indirectly they kind of present themselves as a platform for creative people which is kind of what apple products have always been known for yeah totally and i want to give a very big hello to listener roz hall so i didn't even know this our listener roz hall actually had his artwork featured um in the apple stores too a british artists father and he's actually the guy who created the cult cast uh christmas artwork last year he did this really beautiful slash insanely creepy piece of me looking like santa claus and i had a i have a small little buster and a small little leander on my knees so very apropos for the holidays and he was asking me about it on twitter if i had just seen the campaign didn't mention anything uh because he's a humble guy and i went and looked on apple's website and his name was there and i was like what the heck and i started looking through the artwork and so they featured a bunch of his artwork on there as well as part of the program so way to go roz that's really cool they did that and i'm just curious cory did your friends tell you how they got contacted by apple was it just like the like a random thing they just kind of emailed them or something um i think they um one of apple's agencies or something like that contacted them just reached out and was like do you want us to feature you in apple stores yeah they're like i guess you're like oh i don't know i don't know can i think i'll think about it yeah how much how much you're gonna give me i'll think about it i'll get back to you i was gonna do a samsung campaign so you know i'll have to get back to you guys about that um good week to be uh at nine to five mac they came out with a couple stories this week from their sources that i thought were definitely worth talking about so first off according to nine to five mac we're going to be seeing a uh an apple watch sometime in march that's going to be the release date according to their sources and they had multiple sources tell them that this is probably what was going to happen so looks like it could be likely they're also saying that they're going to be flying apple store some apple store employees from a lot of the different stores into the apple offices in california in texas to do like like a hands-on training so they kind of have to start getting prepared for this stuff so it's kind of getting i think probably tough to keep this a secret because if you're flying an employee to or bringing an employee to like an apple location from an apple store you know those guys got to talk to each other and tell each other what's going on i'm thinking so between february and march sometime we might get a release date my question to you corey are you getting one ew it depends how much it is really i thought for sure you're gonna say yes yeah we'll see i i don't know um i'm loving my plus but you know yeah we'll see if um the first version is the best um hopefully when the um api is more built out yeah yeah built out and you know maybe version two you know where people can build better apps for it but this was built that'd be good for guys like you now that you have a fiance you guys can each get one you can send your heartbeat to each other that doesn't interest you that was one of the features they highlighted on stage i know i saw that that was awesome yeah i mean that seems like something that would really help you you know get closer to your fiance so maybe you should consider it for that so as far as pricing goes because you know that's probably what everyone's wondering is we know that the sport or the uh the sport model is gonna be 349. so that's the base model oddly because there's the model up above that which we don't know the pricing on which is the steel band edition nine to five map was kind of thinking that was going to be 500 bucks again no one really knows they haven't announced it and then there's the edition edition which who knows how much that will be that's probably going to be several thousand dollars but again i kind of wonder how well a several thousand dollar i watch would sell you know it would be interesting to talk to to your fiance about this because she's into fashion yeah she's like i want a gold one she did say that yeah really okay but i mean just came out which would do you think she'd be willing to spend i don't know four thousand dollars for one uh no i wouldn't let her she's got the guns depends if uh you know you can upgrade it later kind of like the software type type thing that uh buster was talking about in the past yeah upset but still i mean even the software it's gonna be like a computer i'm sure you'll be able to upgrade the software but the hardware from what i understand is built onto this chip and that chip is soaked in a resin before they put into the watch you know so that it's covered in plastic and maybe it is interchangeable we don't know but let's just say that the watch has from a technical perspective has a one year life span so in a year they're going to release an updated version that has better hardware would you be interested or do you think that your fiance would be interested in buying a 4 000 version that's going to be out of date in a year uh us personally no but you know maybe if we're like kanye or something yeah it's gonna be the kanye's the world who are gonna be buying these maybe that's what they're planning too so but you're still kind of on the fence about getting one i'm definitely gonna get the sport model just because i feel like i have to have one and i'm curious to see how well it works but you're kind of on the fence still as from a functional perspective yeah i i'm it's gotta wow me i don't know maybe the second model yeah well i mean i'm i'm with you i mean if i didn't have to buy one just to kind of check it out i'm totally i feel exactly the way you do it has to wow me and i don't really feel like i've seen anything that has done that so far are there any features that are memorable to you that you thought wow this actually looks really cool i mean being able to just take your watch when you go on a run i think that would be awesome um you know we'll see what apps launch with it and how those all function i think the um ui of it's amazing you know how they reinvented that um so you know i want to play around with one but i don't know if you know i'll buy it right away but maybe see you know what the hiccups are and yeah we'll see you know there's going to be all sorts of weird little like bugs and stuff when they release it too because it's a first generation product unlike anything they've ever released before so for sure there's gonna be little little strange things yeah we'll see if you know developers you know rush on the gold rush of the launch of it kind of like the ipad but from what i'm hearing within the developer community you know that's not as much what what they're doing you know so they're kind of apprehensive to build apps for it yeah i think so i think a lot of you know apps have been getting pulled for that today view um thing like panic um their app got pulled we'll see what apple does if they can coerce the developers to make cool apps for it yeah the other thing too is i think from a from a watch perspective the watch has to be an extension of an app you already have so if you're playing like if you're playing a game this is probably never going to happen but if you're playing a game on your ipad you're like i want to i want to extend this experience to my watch the watch would have to in some way extend the experience of the game so there's no standalone apps on the apple watch thus far exactly the things that you already use like the instagram app i forget what functionality i heard but what if you could you're you might be excited for this what if you could take a picture from your wrist via your iphone that's mounted to a tripod then selfies will go next level i mean i think that belfies might get a lot more popular too yeah selfie sticks and then and then the butt selfies because other notorious notoriously difficult to take when you have to hold your iphone behind you like that awkward position those with the longest arms win on that so if you could like get it up on a tripod or something boom that'd be awesome oh hopefully hopefully it's not all notifications you know like games that just notify you when you know you get free bonus lives or you know stuff like that so i'm honestly worried about that i'm honestly worried about that that's going to be what it is oh you got a text message oh you have an email oh you should instagram today oh your friend just instagrammed i mean that's the stuff that i kind of feel is not that valuable yeah and hopefully i don't know apple's been kind of weird with their notifications too that project read spam they did over the holidays that was kind of weird oh dude i that is one of my biggest annoyances on ios whenever developers send me a notification that's trying to get me to buy something i that's that's such a big no-no in my book like you should never ever do that and there have been several games that i that i play that have sent me notifications that say something along the lines of we're having a sale on our additional content today now you can buy it for three bucks yeah i i mean like apple in their guidelines say that's a no-no but then you know they're doing it themselves and then i guess over the whole new year they did a survey where they said like hey where have you engaged you know seen the most growth developers um on your apps and one of the one of the things was push notifications so like they're i don't know i don't know what they're you know they're probably like push notifications to sell stuff yeah so it's like a marketing survey that apple did to developers yeah um and you know one of the of the many questions was you know where have you seen your mo in the most growth engagement and one of them was you know push notifications so push notification spam yeah exactly oh that drives me come on phil phil yeah no big no-no phil gosh okay one other big apple story this week so you guys are probably all probably totally aware that nine to five mac published a a piece about what they thought the next mac macbook was going to look like the macbook air this is the long-awaited 12-inch model that we've talked about on this show a ton and so let me just run some of the specifics by you corey and then i want to know if you think this is something that you would buy so apparently apple is developing an all-new macbook air for launch in 2015 with a totally different design which is going to be getting rid of a lot of the standard ports that we all know and love like usb uh the sd card slot uh magsafe so the actual power adapter that apple has used forever and lightning and all the ports but it's gonna be smaller so it's gonna be smaller than the 13 a little bit bigger than the 11 inch macbook pro but a little bit thicker a little bit narrower but it's gonna have a 12 inch screen and they're going to be kind of shrinking or squishing the keys together not shrinking the keys are still going to be normal size according 99 mac but they're going to be pushing the keys together to kind of make space uh for the smaller size and and the the macbook is going to have hardly any bezel at all so the screen is going to have hardly any bezel the outside of the actual macbook is going to kind of wrap tightly around the keyboard so they're trying to make this thing really super duper small in fact internally they were saying that it's being referred to as the macbook stealth because it's so small and portable here's here's the thing though so fanless actually also clickless trackpad which we talked about before is a touch only the speaker ports are going to be doubling as an escape for heat but here's the big thing so they're going to be switching to usbc which is all new usb connection that is able to drive displays just like lightning so you wouldn't need to have the lightning ports on there and can also power the computer itself so the only adapter or the only port that you're gonna have on the new macbook pro is one usbc ports maybe two they don't know for sure and that's it no other connections but you will you will get a super lightweight higher resolution screen macbook pro they didn't say if it was retina or not they just said higher resolution does this sound like a product that you would actually want to buy corey uh no that kind of echoes my feeling about it i i'm sure there are people out there that would love to buy a lighter weight macbook pro or something that's super slim even more slim than it is now macbook air sorry more slim than it is now even lighter than it is now but to not have any ports on it at all i maybe that works for the average consumer but i use a lot of my ports on my computer do you oh yeah all of them i feel like maybe this is geared towards you know younger students or something like that where it's something they can tote around everywhere as their first computer or something so it's interesting that you should bring that up um because i i've been reading about this online to hear what people think and some other people have postulated this that's exactly what this is this is going to be a lower end computer so it's it's going to be significantly less expensive than the current macbook airs and the reason it's going to be so inexpensive is because it's just not going to have a lot of whiz-bang features built in it's going to be great for browsing the internet maybe doing some typing watching videos and that's probably it and so the people that would buy this are students people who are looking for a lower cost macbook and don't really want to have a macbook pro or a macbook air because they consider those computers too expensive it's certainly not for me dude because i'm looking at my computer right now i use i never thought i would do this but i use both lightning ports i use my usb right now i actually also have a thunderbolt docking station i have stuff plugged into that i think i might have i'm looking i'm adjusting my mic here i might have one my sd card slot is free and one usb port is free that's it other than that they're they're almost always totally full so i think the big question is going to be does it have retina or not if it had a retina display would that change your opinion corey i don't think it's for me i don't know i think they're going to sell a bazillion of them just because you know kids want you know some cool computer they can play minecraft on you know dude i don't know minecraft if i was young and that came out i i would totally buy it yeah maybe it has beats audio in it or something oh my gosh i hope not i hope it does not have beats audio but yeah if i was young i'd be like mom i need this i'll be begging my mom for this all day long if it was just some inexpensive mac because i guess i don't consider a thousand dollar computer to be that expensive in the apple space when you're in the apple space a thousand dollars for a computer seems like nothing but my computer was twenty four hundred dollars so looking at it from that perspective a thousand bucks seems affordable to me do you have a pretty nice macbook pro uh yeah i have a 13-inch retina but you know if i was a kid and you know it was a lower model i would i would love that you know back in the day totally yeah totally especially when there are pcs out there that cost 400 bucks totally so i think i'm probably out of touch as far as pricing is concerned because there are a lot of pcs out there that are super cheap and maybe that's who apple's going after they're gonna maybe release like a 600 model we'll see okay before we hop into all the great mobile photography chat i do want to say thank you to squarespace for supporting this episode guys have you been to thecultcast.com did you know we built that website in a matter of hours on squarespace and i think it looks pretty gersh dern good like go to it scroll down you'll see the cult cast logo turned into something special that was all built into squarespace it was all drag and drop it was super easy to do the design looks good and unlike building a website yourself on any other you know web platform with squarespace they do all this magical encoding on the back end when you upload image images build image galleries so that your website looks great on any device that visits so if you go to theculcast.com on your computer it looks good if you go on your iphone it looks great we didn't do any of that optimization squarespace did they have a bunch of new templates now too with squarespace seven and you can integrate your email address into your website so you could have you know airfon at thecultcast.com which i do have and do that quite easily which before it was kind of a pain in the arse to to kind of have that email integration but now with their partnership with google super easy to do you have access to a zillion stock images via getty images and now they have cover pages which i was mentioning earlier which are these impactful beautiful one-page websites that are really good if you just need to have a presence on the web if you don't have a presence in the web you're doing something as a professional as an artist as someone in you know any kind of professional capacity maybe you're a real estate agent or something and you just need a place where people can go to see your face maybe a few sentences on what you do and an email address cover pages are the perfect way to do that all this comes of course with beautiful simple design really easy to use back in to build your website 24 7 customer support and it's only eight bucks a month when you sign up at squarespace.com and you can do a free trial no credit card needed just sign up for a free trial you'll be up and running in no time and of course every website comes with a free e-commerce website all you have to do is just build it out boom all of a sudden you're ready to start selling slang in some stuff buster's beard kits we're working on that for next year probably gonna have a holiday edition with some of those little like um beard oil for sure that's that's an easy seller that that stuff sells itself but i was thinking some ornaments you've probably seen those online i like that did you see that picture online with that guy with uh the ornaments in his beard yeah yeah that was my idea dude they totally stole that for me i'm getting and zero cents from every one of those transactions and i was talking to buster i'm like we need to write this wrong so we're gonna make a chest here model i mean we have all these great ideas and we just we have our e-commerce site is gonna be up and running just slang in that stuff left and right i want to thank squarespace for supporting this episode oh by the way uh when you uh use codecast you'll save 10 off your order and if you buy a year of hosting you get a free domain name squarespace.com thank you squarespace for supporting this episode all righty prinstagram let's go into the nitty gritty shall we on let's just go deep i mean i guess for me the first question besides process besides what apps you use besides the camera you're using these days i just want to know what's it like to be you you have 440 000 instagram followers and you're always posting these great pictures i mean are you just going out every day into the wilderness and finding these great sceneries to capture i mean how does that whole thing work yeah i just live in the woods non-stop um so you smell wonderful you don't shower very often noted yeah no i don't know i i travel a lot uh it's been awesome um we do travel a lot because i was like you're always going to these different places is that like throughout the week or like is that like a lot each month like how often do you travel yeah probably like a couple times a month like two two times a month okay like this last couple months have been more crazy like we went from oregon to whistler to texas to switzerland like you went to switzerland yeah yeah we did a um campaign with swiss army knife wow so we went to headquarters where they build swiss army knives and but the founders and uh about the founders of swiss army knife or yeah like tour knox is what yeah victorinox yeah so we got to meet them and that was for wired magazine um so we shot the ad for them for last month's issue of wired for victorinox and uh yeah it was awesome so yeah random cool trips like that and getting to see different landscapes and it's been amazing let me ask you this how do you choose where to go because i mean you're like i'm going to texas i'm going to the wilderness i'm going here and there how do you decide where you're going to go and take pictures uh it's totally random so do you spin a globe and put your finger down or yeah i usually comes up like what's around um our schedule if like we have a photo job or something in a certain area or like we're going to la next week um for for a couple shoots and uh so we'll we'll go around and then take photos around there and you know have awesome photos that we can use on instagram and post and share those throughout the month or whenever so i i think when instagram first started it was very like hey share what your moment is right now but now since instagram's so big and uh i think a lot of people are using it differently nowadays that it's it's more like a tailored art gallery for a lot of photographers that i'm friends with so you know we're showcasing you know some photos that we've you know been creating over the last month or you know however long um so it's been crazy because you know iphone the quality of its on instagram is so close to dslr because of instagram's compression rates so it's like you can't really tell the difference between a dslr image nowadays and you know iphone 6 plus or a6 camera so yeah if you told me you're using a dslr i would believe you because your pictures the dynamic range that they that they appear to have looks like a dslr yeah some of them i have been okay so some of them are dslr yeah yeah i've been mixing it up lately um just because um i like the dslr sometimes better for those photos so you know it's a it's a it's a funny thing because it was started on the iphone and then kind of that got so far that you know now i'm shooting on both so uh for me it's it's been fun because when i started on instagram i wasn't a professional photographer or anything like that i was a graphic designer building iphone apps you know so um it's a funny progression from iphone shooting that only to shooting dslr and mixing up the two now it's been fun so you're going to be going to la next week so do you just look at google maps and say hey what's around la that we could go to and and shoot yeah it's cool because like geotags and you know people have already you know kind of already location scouted for you you know on instagram so yeah you know following people in different areas is cool because you can kind of see the cool spots to go to if you're traveling there so you know hitting up people in the area and connecting with them and you know seeing if they want to go out and shoot or you know stuff like that to discover new areas is always the best thing so you're also using instagram for discovery oh yeah totally you met your fiance on instagram you're using it to take pictures it's your job you're also using it to travel you are true you are the prince of instagram truly that is the perfect title so okay you are at a location you're kind of walking around um and you're looking for inspiration i'm assuming what what cameras are you using you're using the iphone 6 i know that or the six plus right yeah i'm using the six plus and then i have um a sony rx100 to do video vlog so we've been documenting our trips like trips to switzerland and stuff like that and putting those collecting those up and putting those on youtube and sharing those is like vlogs trips oh you can what's our trip youtube what's your youtube url uh it's youtube.com slash with hearts okay i kind of guess co at the end with heart taken yeah yeah so we i share those so i'm shooting iphone i'm documenting with video and then i shoot dslr uh with my canon uh 5d mark iii so oh yeah the canon 5d mark iii me too yeah i love it you love it yeah i like it too i i switched from nikon just to switch over to the canon world for a while it's just to try it i like it a lot there are pros and cons to it i think the thing that surprises me most about the canon versus the nikon is just how fast it shows where like i have paint and stuff rubbing off on my 5d mark ii and it spends most of its life being babied are you having any issues with yours at all um i think you see normal wear and tear uh i haven't that much um you know i keep pretty good care of it but dude me too that's what i thought yeah anyway total tangent not not at all relevant um so you're using a canon 5d mark iii you're using your iphone 6 plus tell us what you think about the six plus compared to other mobile cameras that you've used um i've been loving it yeah a lot of people have been when they first came out i guess some of them are having issues with the camera um just you know the dynamic range on it and it was showing up kind of fuzzy or painted painted like um you know once you've you know dived down to the pixel level but uh yeah it's been awesome i i think it's you know some of the images i actually like better from my my six compared to dslr which is crazy but i know it's crazy to even be able to say that isn't it yeah it's it's it's awesome i love it yeah i i mean i'm i'm continually surprised by how how great a picture is my six plus takes it's amazing and in low light photography it's not good and if you listen to my interview with david hobby um in cult cast 160 in the cast second hour we did he kind of talks about that a little bit so not great for low light but in balanced lighting situations the iphone 6 plus is incredible i mean truly sometimes you would have a hard time unless you dug down into the pixels you'd have a hard time telling you know what's dslr and what's actually iphone 6 plus yeah with with low light it's pretty cool because there's some apps that you know like cortex cam which basically takes like five photos at different apertures and we'll combine them all together so it's less grain on the photos and that's with your iphone and then there's a iphone app called manual and you basically can adjust the shutter speed ios iso and lock it for your on your iphone and shoot with that so it's like a dslr so it gives you um kind of uh fine-tuned controls over aperture and shutter exactly yeah i think alex actually picked this for one of his favorite rave picks a while back oh yeah it's awesome you can change the white balance on it like it's awesome so it gives you fine-tuned control over the photo attributes on your iphone i'm writing this down because i'm gonna pull all this stuff in the show notes by the way um all this stuff will be in the show notes it's also on thecultcast.com where we you know post all the show notes it's also on call to mac there's show notes everywhere there are also show notes in the uh actual episode that we embed so whatever you know podcast app you're using they're all there so manual that's like what three bucks yeah i think so something around that i think it was on sale around christmas for like 9.99 but yeah the the app developer is awesome dude and it's a good app for sure so as long as we're on apps what other what other apps are in your repertoire that you're using frequently yeah i i use vsco cam for that's still a popular one for you yeah oh yeah that's my bread and butter for sure can i ask you with viscocam i i've used it a lot too i like it but what is it about that app that you really love because i kind of dabble in you know in and out of it but i haven't really fell in love with it you know like a lot of yeah so when you open it i mean you have all these amazing kind of film-like presets so they you know take a lot of time to fine-tune um their presets you know they have some for lightroom and stuff so it mimics film so a lot of the tones on it i i love because it reminds me a lot of film um so i like i like that aspect i love that you can control the amount um of the filter on it their fine tune adjustments are awesome um you mean the filters themselves are just in like the photo adjustments yeah so you can uh adjust the the photo and then apply a filter and then adjust that or you know maybe even layer a couple filters together like if you only use it halfway oh yeah what's your favorite filter pack do you know i love mm5 p5 the a's are awesome so yeah when you download the app there's tons of cool uh filter packs that you can play around with and they do a lot of sponsored kind of free collaborations they did one with levi's remember that one yeah yeah a bunch of cool stuff so i love it um it's a really cool app can any other apps that you find yourself using frequently um i do use filterstorm and i use that to retouch a little bit depending if there's like something in the photo that i feel like is distracting i'll use that to take that out of the photo i mean like if there's something like you're taking a picture and you see there's some guy doing like like showing his nipples or something like photobombing you like you pull him out of it yeah that's a really bad example but why not i could take it completely out of the photo okay so or if there's like a pop pop can in the you know grass or something like that okay you know you could clone that out you know our example is much better than mine i'm gonna give you that it's uh i don't know why some guy would photobomb your picture with his nipples but i you know with the guys i work with this is me it could very potentially be buster or alex that's true so yeah anyone blame it on alex okay so filter storm helps you take things that you don't want out of your pictures exactly okay so yeah okay and uh i i went over um i actually uh come like a month ago i launched learnmobilephotography.com um so if people want to go to that uh it links to a place in my website where it's it's a free class on the basics of mobile photography oh that's great yeah so i go over you know scouting and capturing lighting and editing uh you know how to develop community and grow as a photographer and then i went through my whole editing process and this was about a year and a half ago two years it was a class i did for skillshare and then i made it free so this last month i made it free and so i have a list of all my apps that i use and yeah so uh i think the community aspect of it is also really important because you're i mean i think you're very good at building community you know around what you do you're always taking pictures of people that you that you put on instagram um if you could give away a couple tips like maybe one important tip for building community how would you what would you say to people uh not be shy i mean like uh important yes yeah not to be shy and go up to people that you you know look up to you know shoot them email a lot of people i know you know who do have like a lot of followers they read their email you know we all check our emails so i think connecting with you know people you look up to and um and then finding people that are like you and like the same things that you you do and you know will encourage you to grow um i think that was huge for me at the beginning was you know finding a crew of people that wanted to go out and adventure and take photos and you know have fun so i think yeah building community finding people around you and then not being afraid to reach out to people so as far as building a following on instagram i mean it was it was probably a lot different when you started because instagram was so much it was it was new kind of when you started yeah it's so clear what it was what's that try to explain what like oh yeah i use this app called instagram i don't know if you've heard of it instagram yeah what is that and then and now obviously it's so busy there's so many people taking pictures could you give a tip yeah kim kardashian on there is she oh yeah she has like the most followers i think let's see here follow okay check okay what's a tip or two that you give to people to i don't want to say get followers i hate i don't think that should ever be your intention to get followers you know but obviously you want to be able to share your your photography with other people how do you how do you build a community on instagram that's a better way to do it yeah and i think it's totally finding people in your city first and you know and hanging out with them and i don't know i think it's a slow process and i think it's should be organic and you know i mean there's people that have so many amount of followers and then zero engagement and so you're kind of like what's going on there you know um so by engagement you mean like they're not interacting with the people that yeah so people you know have you know 800 000 or 2 million followers like mace that rapper dude you know he had 2 million followers and then you know instagram deleted all their spam accounts and he went down to 200k you know so it's like kidding wow yeah so it's very inflated you know they don't have you know uh to amount of followers to likes to comments it was very not organic i think the key is you know build a community that's organic and you know friends that you enjoy doing life with and i think that's should should be your your focus no matter what and um i don't i think followers will come when you're showing who you really are and um not you know as an artist you know showing your your work and being authentic so i think that is a as an extraordinary tip and in fact if people were to ask me you know how what was one tip you give give people to build a podcast yeah i mean that's always what i tell people i'm like you got to do something that you love because it's a lot of hard work and i think that you need to have fun doing it because if you have fun doing it they'll have fun listening to it totally and that's what makes them want to come back and listen to the show or you know look at your artwork or view your photographs is is that that aspect of it coming through the work yeah you being you i think the world doesn't need another you know copy of me or anyone else they need um you know that unique person you know to to bring their light to the world you know who they are yeah i think that's key i feel like you're making appointed comments about the haircut that i got that looks exactly like yours and the glasses yeah i got it look just like yours it's okay i was gonna change my instagram name to with passion with farts with far oh even better that's that's definitely taken that's definitely take it it is yeah you're right that's what i should do and take really bad landscape photos um to your comment about seattle haircuts dude you nailed it everyone in seattle has the same haircut now i feel like oh yeah you go to ballard i know all you need to do is hipster town oh it's hipster hipster central capital usa yeah free market too all the neighborhoods now everyone that's like exactly yours yeah mackamore with a beard yes yes you gotta have the sleeves the tatted sleeves too yeah are the are the ear gauges still in are those still in i don't know are those kind of phasing out i think those are maybe out and they're regretting their decision i always told my cousin when he was going to school if you want to make a ton of money when you grow up you need to become an earlobe plastic surgeon exactly because all the people in their 20s that have gauges that decide to take them out when they're 40 are gonna need to get their ear holes fixed they don't look like loose butthole and they're gonna need to go someone who's really talented so if you're that guy dude the sky's the limit for your career yeah endless supply clientele so back on topic let's talk about actual editing settings so you take a photo and you're like this is great so i want to take out the guy flashing his nipples in the background because i don't want that on instagram what else are you looking to adjust uh depends if i shoot it uh sometimes i shoot um so the exposure is a little darker so it retains uh you know detail in the photo so it's not blown out so that the highlights or have details what you're saying yes so if you if you shoot it overexposed a lot of times you lose detail in the highlights yeah um you know you can't you can't get that back uh from the photo um so you know adjust the exposure levels contrast um add a little bit of sharpening um like you're boosting your shadows a lot because your photos if i had to describe the with hearts touch your photos always look very dreamy they have like this glow to them and everyone in them looks great and they have this airy quality to them what would you say how do you add that to the photos yeah i do uh boost um the shadows a little bit um just so it has that kind of um atmosphere motion to the foot i think that's one of the keys that i love to do is bring that to a photo where people are like inspired from it um so yeah i totally do that do you feel like a big part of it also is maybe just taking photos in beautiful light and starting from that perspective yeah if it's you know blown out and harsh day in texas you know it's it's not going to be fun um to shoot because you know everything's going to be super um blown out which means that you know it's going to be harsh light um so it's perfect that we live in the northwest and i know we are getting this amazing cloud cover we have diffusion all year round softbox non-stop softbox so it's funny because people that don't know anything about photography just you know your everyday person who just takes pictures they make comments like oh it's sunny we lucked out it's sunny outside right so that's going to improve the quality of the pictures in fact i was just taking some portraits recently and it became sunny outside and i was grumbling to myself and i was like this is going to suck right cause taking pictures in direct sunlight is very difficult you have to have the right gear or you have to find shade and they were really excited oh look how beautiful it is outside these pictures are gonna be amazing but yeah amazingly bad everyone's gonna look like they are a zombie because they're gonna be totally blown out yeah you gotta wait till golden hour which is like great you know before sunset that that hour so is that are you looking for those times to shoot is that is that a tactic that you use yeah oh yeah totally so we'll get up early in the morning and shoot uh when the sun's nice and then break during the mid mid day when it's nasty um and then shoot at you know before sunset when the light's really nice and um you know you get that cool tones so that do you find that the iphone performs okay in in light that's diminishing quickly because one of the things that david hobby was saying when we had him on was he found that his iphone just couldn't really take great pictures is that not the case for you um it's hit and miss uh it depends what you're shooting if you're shooting you know a sunset you know right before i think it'd be awesome but you know after the sunset and it's like he was saying that he likes to shoot right after the sun goes down for like half an hour or something um and that's a lot harder because you know your you know your sensor can't read that much you know information you know it's it's smaller uh to get let all that light in um so yeah i i think it's it depends um i think you can control uh you know it with like a manual that manual app um so i i personally like it shooting on iphone before sunset but after you know it usually gets kind of um gross and dark yeah it doesn't take too long before the iphone just is like yep i give up do you want to use the led flash i don't see a lot of that in your photography you should start integrating the led flash work um let's talk about framing and inspiration i i know the creative process is hard it's hard to describe it's it's hard to articulate you just have to kind of experience it but when you're out there when you're walking around you know how do you what's the process that you go to or maybe you could describe the feelings you get when you when you stumble across something and you're like this this looks like it has potential and so you decide to begin shooting it what is that experience like for you uh it's like a rush it's like a high you get crazy uh bethany you know my fiance will tell you she'll she'll like lose me because i'll just run off and you know get so excited yes go try to find that moment and just get pumped on life because you're looking at beauty and i think trying to capture that's key and i don't know i think when when we're in that moment and the settings right that you know nature you know it's beautiful you're you're kind of in awe and you're just trying to capture that that moment in time the best that you can so i identify with that so much you kind of you do you kind of get lost in this in this state if you will where you are totally focused you know there's something there that you want to just describe you know photographically to people you want to translate to people and you're not quite sure how you're going to do it but you're kind of just following your nose and totally you know you're gonna have to take a bunch of photos and that's actually something that stuck with me from last time the very first time actually that you and i spoke on the show you're like i take maybe 300 pictures and i might use what maybe one or two of those so is that still the case you just take a lot of photos and then you pick the one that really yeah keep a clean camera roll so oh so what did you get the 16 gigabyte iphone 6 plus no i i went 64 just because uh you know the downloads for upgrade software is like eight gigs or whatever you know so yeah that's true yeah good point you have to otherwise you have to plug it into your computer just to update the software exactly so i got the 128 and uh the guy who robbed me got a 64. oh yeah so he got less than me that makes me feel good about that yeah what's the update on that oh dude oh as long as we're talking about it i i'm i'm still i'm still trying to get the cop just just to give two shots about the entire thing i'm i well the only thing i'm waiting for is the footage from the 7-eleven and the 7-eleven footage they won't give it to me because i'm not a police officer and they're like we have to give the police so they have it and they're like it shows the person's face it shows the entire crime and we want to give it to the police and we've tried contacting them and they just they won't come get it so that's where i'm at i'm trying to motivate this police officer to go get this footage and give it to me and then once they do that i'm just going to release everything i have to reddit because i'm kind of at a dead end like i i followed all the leads that i could and we haven't really gotten anywhere productive so i'm going to release everything to write it and i'm going to hope that someone recognizes the car or recognizes him and it's people said we need to do a sting you know just repost it dude yeah oh yeah i tried that actually so funny enough i tried reposting it on craigslist and i i listed it at a ridiculously high price so no one who could no one who was actually interested in buying one would be interested to buy it right i was like 13 or 1400 or something i'm like if you had money to actually buy this there's no way you would contact me because it's too expensive so i did that and i got a bite and somebody contacted me and was like hey do you how many iphones do you have was the first question they asked me which was funny because that was the exact same question um i was asked when i was corresponding with the person who who took the phone from me and i was like dude oh my gosh this is crazy right but that lead kind of fizzled the person ended up just breaking contact with me and not following through spooked he got spooked maybe he was like dude this guy this guy is on to me he knows so he's gonna come with his mace this time so that guy got spooked but here's the other thing too is i started texting again with the number that i was texting with before which the which the crook owned and i have an ongoing texting thread with this with this number still still to this day but when i do hey how are you no no no i i totally it's a long story but i i tricked them into thinking that i had their wallet i was like i just started off the conversation with do you want it back or not and i just waited and the person got back to me and they're like i'm sorry like what what back i'm like i'm like your wallet do you want your wallet this is i made up some name this is john right and i got a text back they're like oh yes yes thank you so much right let's meet up yeah it's totally made up and this person is is texting me with me now and saying that they want their wallet back so i this story kind of continues on for four or five days till finally they actually admitted hey look i actually this is not the person you think it is this is not my wallet and i was like oh dang but anyway this led to a conversation with the person on this number what i don't know is is this the same person who robbed me or is this someone totally new because you know like these numbers get recycled when they don't get used so if like the crook stopped using the number that i was texting with it would have gotten assigned to somebody else yeah i feel like the story right now is like serial podcast part two airpod edition people thought i was crazy they're like i cannot believe that you're you're taking it this far you're obsessed i'm like i'm not obsessed it's actually a fun game for me and if we catch him great if not you know that's fine why i tried my best but it is interesting just to see where it goes right because now i'm texting with this number again it could very well be the criminal and so i'm trying to get them to give me their address so i can like do a scope out of their house and see if the car is there and dude if you want to come with me man let's do it we'll arm up we'll roll out in a bat with the bat i got my golf club actually i don't even have a golf club i'll have to buy one but i've got some blunt objects in my house i have an old dell like hit them with i mean we'll figure something out you have a guard dog right so yeah i have a i have a ferocious uh 12 pound chihuahua slash toy terrier who i can just throw onto them taco bell yeah oh man it should go crazy on their jugular blood sprays everywhere it's gonna be glorious the ultimate payback um where were we photography uh i think that might be all the questions i had we kind of talked about the settings that you adjust um any particular hardware that you that you use in your photography that you know we should know about um there's awesome stuff yeah you can get a gorillapod uh those are awesome dude those are great i've been meaning to get one of those can you describe what they are uh it's basically like an adjustable like tripod that has like these tentacles type thing you know each bar you can adjust and wrap around like a bar or anything like that you want to put the tripod on so it's really flexible and um it's nice so it's kind of for holding your iphone in i don't know strange situations they're not just standard like on the ground shots totally and you could take like time lapse you know uh you know use average camera pro or that app to take long exposures and average camera pro yeah that's an awesome thing to so you can get that that you know those shots where it looks like the water is glassy like super glass you know that's like you know 100 photos in one you know and they just put them all together so the water looks like glass do you ever use that for any of your shots yeah i've used it yeah interesting any other hardware that you find to be useful um i think was it buster alex uh recommended moment lenses and they're a seattle company and they developed yeah yeah they're awesome they're super nice guys i actually helped kind of test one of them when they were launching their kickstarter but yeah they did a kickstarter and they they've launched so now you can even buy them um i think they have them for six and six plus they have like these mounts on the back and you can basically put a telephoto or a wide angle lens on it so you get you know more um you know in your you know more landscape and your foot up so it's awesome so moment lens is really good so those are the ones that they you install a case right onto your iphone and then yeah all these lenses on there it's like this little bar type thing that you attach to the back of your phone and uh it sits over your lens so you can just attach you know lenses non-stop and change them interchange them super easily cool okay moment lenses anything else you got i think that's it yeah okay fantastic well dude thank you for sharing all of your secret tips with us yeah i love this inspires people to i know we have a lot of photographers that listen to this show i hope it inspires people to really go out there and improve you know and and maybe learn about some new apps that can help them you know take better photos and different lighting conditions and stuff but more than anything else just to know it's a struggle i mean you have to go out there and do you just have to go through motions right that's the secret you got to go out there and do it and and just start somewhere and build a habit yeah build a habit and you know corey you obviously have developed a very good sense of style with your photos and that's taken a lot of time and a lot of effort and that's what people that's the goal right people have to go out there and really just kind of do this thing over and over again until they develop that same sense of style about their own photography that you have yeah and i think that's being okay with you being you you know and bringing your voice to the world and who you are and what makes you happy and what you want to post you know post what makes you brings you joy and you know stay humble i think that's the the best stay humble for sure and you know it's interesting you'll go back a year after you've started and look at the work that you've done and you'll be like man that's terrible i even do that with cult cast every time i listen to an old castle i'm like oh my gosh that's so bad you know i've improved a lot since i've started and i still have so long to go but that you're you're in the journey and i think it's it's good to recognize you're on a learning curve yeah and i think as long as you're looking not comparing yourself with others and you're just trying to be the best you i think then the pressure is off to you know try to be where someone else is at because you are developing where you are and you know a month from now you'll be you know way farther along yeah yeah i'm always trying to become the next radio lab do you ever listen to radio lab i have it now oh my gosh one of the best podcasts you know on itunes incredible just one probably my my favorite podcast of all time radiolab is just the guy the guys that do it tell incredible stories but more so than that they use sounds to create these immense rich dense incredible inspiring audio landscapes that tell the story for them so they don't have to use words all the time and it's just an absolute journey every single one of them is so beautifully done and well told and inspiring if you haven't listened to those hopefully i've sold you go listen to one of them they have this one about space oh my gosh oh especially if you're a space buff go check that out okay corey before i let you go um i thought it'd be fun to wrap up with two questions um this these are not photography related whatsoever so clear your mind clear your soul of that of those thoughts tell me a a a favorite piece of tech that you've liked in the last year anything anything at all dang what kind of technology do i have to own it uh no anything that you thought was cool in last year is fine too you don't don't necessarily even need to own it oh i think the you know elon musk and their space explorations super rad spacex yeah i think spacex is killing it so i'd say um be so down to you know be the first instagrammer in space oh man that's one of my goals for 2015. i don't know hopefully it happens that's that's pretty aggressive timeline maybe 2017 i don't even know are they successfully setting people into space yet didn't one of their things recently explode yeah i think one of the companies did but you know you know there has to be another one so maybe that was virginia elevator yeah elevator 2015 space elevators i'm doing it i think we just found our title okay um a movie that you really enjoyed really loved in 2014 ooh there's so many um i think one of the best ones was guardians of the galaxy for me good choice that was good uh lego movie was awesome too yeah that was fantastic yeah boyhood that was good oh i didn't see boyhood but i heard really good things about it so boy the premise of that movie was they followed around ethan hawk this boy who was an actor and then ethan hawkes you know after wife for like what 15 years yeah something like that so it shows the kid when he's like super young and then going through you know the awkward stages and i mean that kid was showing all his awkwardness and epic is middle school awkwardness yeah exactly to you know millions of people so it was cool i think it's really cool an indie movie that uh people definitely should see i think it's on redbox now so oh okay good yeah i want to check that one out too dude there's pictures of me in middle school i can just tell you i don't want anyone to ever see yeah exactly i mean just like the penultimate awkward airfon i would never want anyone to see this in the history of my life i mean look at them when i'm dead but hopefully not before all right well let's go ahead and wrap it up there cory i know you're available uh on instagram your username is with hearts with 2h 2hs anywhere else people can find you with hearts on instagram twitter my website withhearts.com and then learnmobilephotography.com that's new yeah those are the two basic ones learn mobile learnmobilephotography.com that's a good url to have i don't know all right well if you want to follow me on twitter i'm at airfon that's e-r-f-o and i'm also at airfon on instagram although i don't post uh nearly as often as cory nor are my images quite as compelling but you know you might see a cool pick know which one you would you would prefer yeah okay flower girl that is uh that actually seems appropriate for me\n"
