Samsung Galaxy Note Edge - The Curved Edge Screen Review

I'll make sure to preserve the original text and reorganize it into a cohesive article format.

**Samsung's Edge Screen: A Feature with Limited Adoption**

The Samsung Edge screen is a feature that was introduced in various Samsung devices, including the Note series. It's a wide aspect ratio display that can be used as a viewfinder, notification panel, or even a multitasking tool. In this review, I'll take a closer look at the Edge screen and its limitations.

**Viewing Apps on the Edge Screen**

The Edge screen can be viewed directly from the Ed screen, which is accessible by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. This allows users to quickly access their apps without having to navigate through the main screen. However, not all apps take advantage of this feature. For example, Twitter's native app does not display anything on the Edge screen.

**Notification Control and Direct Messages**

Another feature that is available on some apps is notification control and direct message management. These features are useful for quickly managing notifications and messages without leaving the main app. However, Samsung's own native apps, such as the camera and spin, do not take full advantage of the Edge screen.

**Edge Panels**

The Edge screen also supports edge panels, which can be used to display additional information or controls. While some apps do support edge panels, there are limited options available. I would love to see more edge panel features in future updates, as it would enhance the overall user experience.

**Multitasking and Task Switching**

One of my favorite uses for the Edge screen is as a multitasking tool. It allows me to quickly switch between apps without having to navigate through the main screen. This feature works well, but I wish there were more edge panel options available to make it even more useful.

**S Health and Other Native Apps**

Some native Samsung apps, such as S Health, do take advantage of the Edge screen. S Health is a great example of an app that uses the Edge screen effectively, providing users with real-time information about their physical activity. However, there are many other native apps that do not take full advantage of this feature.

**Call and SMS Management**

Another useful feature of the Edge screen is its ability to display call and SMS notifications without interrupting the main app or process. This allows users to easily manage incoming calls and messages without having to leave the current app.

**Limitations and Annoyances**

While the Edge screen has some great features, there are also several limitations and annoyances. For example, the feature does not allow users to set a time limit for notifications or messages to be displayed on the Edge screen. This is a significant omission, as it would enhance the overall user experience.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, while the Samsung Edge screen has some great features, its adoption among third-party apps is limited. I hope that future updates will address these limitations and provide more edge panel options, as well as better multitasking tools. The Edge screen has potential, but it needs to be fully utilized by developers to reach its full potential.

I hope this reorganized text meets your requirements!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi there this is ranit and in this video we'll be talking about the Note Edge and exclusively I'll be just talking about the edge screen because that is what this device is all about and if you have watched my unboxing video of this note edge I did say that it is actually a regular Note 4 but with that extra Edge screen and that is what this Edge is so I'll be exclusively talking about the features of this Edge screen and how I actually use them and what are the things that I really like about it and what are the things I don't like about it and I've been using this device now for almost 3 weeks now but before I show you how I use this Ed screen let me actually show you the features offered by this Edge screen and the software announcements that Samsung has done on this device so here we have the Note Edge and the Striking uh difference about this device compared to the Note 4 is this Ed screen and it's a 160 pixel wide 2560 pixels in length and uh the thing is that it is independent of the main display and it can actually also work in conjunction with the main display and even when the phone is Switched Off like this if you swipe it like this twice it just wakes up and just shows you the Ed screen and you can now toggle between them between the panels Samsung likes to call these the panels so yes it can provide a bit of extra functionality but let's just switch it on let me just switch it on and uh by default um actually you this panel is pre-installed and here all the apps you just can set up all your quick apps over here you can easily do that I'll show you that a bit later and if you just swipe here we get to these apps but the thing is that we just cannot change these apps one is the voice recorder we also have the flashlight so you can quickly toggle the flashlight using this one oops it is on let's switch it off let's go back we have the timer like this and we also have one more used this ruler or anything I did use the mic a couple of times but if you just go back here this is the main panel and these are the extra panels you can customize these and Samsung likes to call these The Edge panels and if you just swipe towards the bottom you get to these settings and if you click here you can access these panels and by default there'll be some panels that are there but you can install some of of the other panels also that are available for example if you just click here it'll go to the Samsung store and from here you can install some extra panels but do note that as of now only a limited amount of panels are there for example this is for the task manager I used it earlier we also have for Ram and we have CNN breaking news we can also have a toggle for data usage if you travel a lot then I think so you'll appreciate this we also have one for S note and these are some random ones for bookmark marks and we also have some games but again if you notice only a few of them are there so the selection is actually pretty limited as of now and you can just click it and it installs and once it's installed it's available here and if you just select it it'll be available on your Edge screen and the thing is that Samsung allows you to reorder this if you just click here and click this reorder option and now you can move the panels for example let's say I want this thermometer panel uh the weather panel over here I can just switch it and just go back and now it is reordered like that now for example if I just let me just unlock this phone and if I just move it here now we have that uh weather panel and here we have the sth so this is customizable and you can add panels up to seven I believe I generally just use three to four panels uh the one I use the most the default is this one and this I use it like a quick launcher all of my favorite apps are now over here so I don't have to actually go out of for example this is my Chrome web browser and from here I can quickly switch to Twitter client this is Talon is a Twitter clan that I use and I use this like a multitasking I and quickly jump to the Play Store open up the camera go to the settings so I have started using this as a multitasking bar and you can customize this let me actually show you if you just hit this star and now you can put your favorite apps over here for for example and the good thing is it does not restrict the number of apps uh that you can book so that's a good thing for example let's say after this Gmail uh let me add one more app that I Ed a lot uh let's say uh I will add my regular Twitter client underneath this camera I can do that and just leave it and now if I press done it should be visible here as you can see we have the twit app over here so uh you can customize this and this works as expected as you can see and I've put my favorite apps that I generally use over here so that I can quickly jump between them without having to move between the uh home screens Etc so I use this as a multitasking tool I would say so this works actually pretty well now let me also show you some other functionality let's just go back to the settings click here and click over here towards the settings you'll notice that when there is no content visible there is some text that is visible over you can actually uh that is called Express The Edge screen text and you can put in your favorite text and where nothing is uh displayed by a native app this will be displayed over here so that is there and you can also use this Express me and customize this Edge screen uh if you would like to do that so that option is there and we also have an option of night clock where this Edge screen will glow if you just enable this on a specified time period And it acts like a night clock I personally don't use it but again that functionality is there so that in the nutshell is The Edge screen and uh but let me actually show you the Practical usage and here I feel the software is a bit lacking yes there are some Samsung native apps that do take advantage of this Ed screen for example if we go to the camera app as you can see uh the options are here on the Ed screen so you can quickly just toggle it from here and we have the entire area as a viewfinder so this works actually pretty well uh but again it's limited to only a very few apps and let's fire up the Chrome web browser and if you notice let's just open a new tab for something like this and if you notice let's say if you're going to this website R if or whatever it just loads over here nothing is shown over here so it does not take advantage of this but one annoying thing I have noticed is that if you just tilt the orientation like this it tilts but here nothing is again displayed not even the time status Etc so you just uh if you just use this it accesses your Ed screen but I feel it is simply not taking advantage of the Ed screen in this orientation and this is again relevant to almost all third party apps for example if you use Twitter let's let's open up this is the native Twitter client I would have loved to see these uh what do you say notification control direct message controls over here it would have been great if that option was there but that is simply not there but again I can't blame Samsung for that these third party app developers have to take advantage of this Ed screen but as of now hardly any third party app really takes serious advantage of the Ed screen in fact I would say I really like this what do you say this PB that is the our blaster on this uh Note Edge and Note 4 also we have this and I use this a lot but still we don't have a edge screen for even that app and I would love to see a lot more Edge panels considering that uh the selection of edge panels as of now is pretty Limited in my opinion another thing that this Edge screen does is that if you get a Call Etc for example let's say I'm browsing doing something it'll be displayed over here it won't interrupt your device for example let me just call up uh this phone if you get a Call Etc it will be displayed over here and you can easily take this call or reject I'll just reject this this also works for SMS so without interrupting your process uh you can reject a call or something like that let me also send a SMS and show you how it works and now have just sent an SMS it should just come over here in a minute or two and as you can see it shows over here uh and the thing is that it just goes away that is the biggest annoyance that I have you just can't set the time and duration let's say I want that message to be displayed for 10 OD seconds that functionality is also not there so it just shows there for a couple of seconds and just vanishes so these are some of the pain points even in the software Department of this Ed screen and I hope Samsung is able to fix them so how do I personally use this note Ed to be very Frank uh when I got this note edge for the first three or four days I felt that this Edge screen is pretty gimmicky but to really appreciate this Edge screen you have to start uh using this Edge screen and I would say I use this Edge screen as my multitasking tool and it is now very easy to switch between the apps so this is the thing that I use mostly on the edge screen to jump between the apps and it actually works uh but yes the edge panels functionality is there but it is sort of limited in my opinion yes I do like this S Health which keeps a track of number of steps that I take but again I would love to see a lot more apps taking advantage of this Edge screen and I would like to see a lot more Edge panels like the remote control panel Etc which is simply not there as of now so what do I feel about this Ed screen as you have seen from the video in terms of functionality and in terms of Hardware point of view Samsung has done a good job and in terms of the raw Hardware the Ed screen performs as it is expected but the thing where I feel it's lacking is in the software department and third party apps that are simply not taking advantage of this even most of the Samsung native apps apart from the camera and the spin do not take full advantage of this Ed screen so as of now I would say there are not a lot of softwares that really take advantage of the edge screen and it'll be interesting to see in the coming months if developers really make their apps that adapt to the Ed screen I hope that you found this video review helpful if you found it helpful I'll appreciate if you can click the like button and if you are
