Cutting up a case never felt so good... Cheap and EFFECTIVE mod!

The Art of Case Modding: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Custom PC Case

When it comes to building a custom PC case, one of the most important things to consider is the aesthetics. The case's design and appearance can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your gaming rig. In this article, we'll take a closer look at how to modify a PC case to create a unique and functional setup.

The first step in modifying a PC case is to assess its current state. Take a close look at the case's construction, noting any features that might be useful or limiting. In our example, we're working with a case that has a number of pre-drilled holes for airflow, but also some awkwardly-placed vents that are prone to rattling in the wind.

To clean up these areas, we'll need to get out the trusty old sandpaper and some sharp tools. It's amazing how much of a difference it can make when you take the time to smooth out rough edges and remove any debris that might be clogging up the vents. As we work on our case, keep in mind that patience is key – this process can be tedious, but the end result will be worth it.

Once we've cleaned up the exterior of the case, we can start thinking about how to add some new features. In our example, we're adding a number of self-threading fan screws to make it easier to install and remove fans from the case. These screws are long enough to allow us to pass them through both the grille and the fan, eliminating the need for the awkward "sandwich" method that's so common in case modding.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was working with the front panel, which doesn't come off easily. To address this issue, we drilled holes in the existing mounting points to accommodate our new screws. This required some careful planning and execution, but the end result is well worth it – a seamless integration of our case mods that looks like it came straight from the factory.

With our exterior modifications complete, let's take a closer look at what's going on inside the case. As we can see, there's still plenty of room for additional components – in fact, three more fans are about to be added to the mix. We're also installing an exhaust fan to provide some much-needed airflow and help keep our system running smoothly.

One of the key features of this build is the addition of two more intakes, which will allow us to balance out the airflow in the case. This means we can control the speed of each fan independently, using a combination of push-pull and exhaust strategies to optimize performance. By taking a more nuanced approach to airflow management, we're able to create a system that's not only visually stunning but also highly efficient.

Of course, no case mod would be complete without some sort of clever solution for dealing with dust buildup in the fans. In our example, we've opted for a simple yet effective approach – by removing the fan filters and simply cleaning them more frequently, we're able to keep our system running smoothly even with minimal maintenance.

As we near the end of this build, it's worth taking a step back to appreciate what we've accomplished. From the smooth exterior lines to the carefully-planned airflow strategy, every detail has been thought out with care and attention. And yet, despite its complexity, this case mod feels surprisingly accessible – even for those who are new to PC building.

So what can you learn from our example? For starters, it's clear that patience is essential when it comes to case modding. This process takes time and effort, but the end result is well worth it. We also learned the importance of careful planning and execution – taking the time to think through every detail before starting a project makes all the difference.

Of course, there are plenty of other lessons to be learned from our experience with this case mod. One of the most important is the value of experimentation and creativity. By trying out new ideas and approaches, we're able to push the boundaries of what's possible with PC building – and create something truly unique in the process.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso recently i was shopping for some stuff for the star wars build and i came across something i thought would actually be neat to do a video about um i was looking for some fan grills and these are what i got for the star wars build you guys will see these incorporated on our little engine mod or whatever they're just white acrylic that look like i don't know if these were laser cut or what whatever however they made this i want the tool that did it so we can start doing it ourselves but anyway this video today is not about those this video today is about something i came across while shopping for those which i thought was really neat and that is these really beautiful machined 240 millimeter fan grill mount maker hole thingies i figured we would take these today and mount them and show you how on one of the most notoriously poor airflow cases ever made the h500 510 and uh i don't know i just wanted a reason to cut a case and this seemed like a pretty good idea this video is sponsored by micro center and their custom pc builder use a custom pc builder to plan your next build and when parts are added to your cart and in-store pickup that's selected you have the option for micro center technician to fully build your pc for an extra fee and if the order is placed at least four hours before closing you can enjoy your new pc the very same day get the best prices and parts selection at any of microcenter's 25 locations across the united states and right now new customers can get a free 240 gigabyte ssd while supplies last in store only and limit one for email to see everything that micro center has to offer and to learn more about this limited time ssd giveaway click the link in the description below so these are from a brand called ac infiniti and like i said i found them on amazon the amazon us store has them they're still in stock right now in fact they are only a two day delivery like if i was to order right now they'd be here in two days so they're 16.99 and i'm going to show you right now this does not add then pay for this i'll put the link down below i promise i will i know i still do it all the time and then i don't but i will this time look at that brushed aluminum finish that is just already i see i was expecting when i ordered this it was just gonna be some super raw piece of metal with two holes in there that are the shape of a 120 and then your duress is up to you but it's actually got beveled edges both inside the fan grille and the edges beveled uh recess mounts for the screws and then it comes with the fan grilles which you can see are currently just nut and bolt threaded in there and they do come long nuts and bolts that you can pass your fan through there but it also comes with fan guards for the bottom side that way if you're putting this somewhere where there's cables nearby you can protect the fans from the cables by mounting these to the bottom of the fan and then it also comes with all of the mounting hardware as you can see right here these grilles are held in with a nut and bolt which means you wouldn't be able to actually mount a fan there right now so if you were to undo these and this would just be if you wanted extra ventilation right you don't have to put fans there you just make ventilation out of that but if you put the fans there you could use the long bolts which will pass through through the fan and then clamp it like squeeze it all together to hold it and then you mount these to the case now what makes this cool is not just that they're holes for ventilation but it's just the fact that once you mount the fans in there they don't butt up against each other so you'll need to keep that in mind this will not be ideal for trying to mount radiators because of this gap which means if they're not touching like this they won't mount a rat because rads are designed for them to be touching flush these would be just for case airflow but the nice thing about that is if you look you don't have to cut an account for the shape of the fans when you're trying to cut a hole on top of the case or in the front of the case you just have to account for the outside perimeter of the fans but as long as you don't go too far so that you overlap the width of this plate so what that means is you just have to make a square hole that's just wider than the mount for the fans and then it's easy to mount the one thing it doesn't come with on here that'd be a template a template would have been awesome to just give you a guide to say hey these are the dimensions cut a hole mount it down and you're good to go i kind of want to do the top and the front if i were to actually do one like if i had to make a choice between where would it go if i only had one the front of this case for sure because the only case ventilation that's on the h100 and the h or the h500 h510 is the side vents right here they came out with the improved airflow later on obviously with the mesh and whatnot this does already have a top mounted hole for our hole on top for a 140 or 120 i already held this up to it to see if it would cover it it does cover the entire thing if i need it to the downside about doing that with this case is it means that i would lose this res mount cable manager thing i don't tend to keep those in these cases anyway let me show you real quick if you want an idea of how long i've had this case by the way that's how long this stuff has been stuck to it doesn't want it doesn't want to peel off now the cool thing about this is with the way that this is going to go there's plenty of room for a fan to fit in front right inside the case right there which means you could still have your radiator on this side so you'd have air pushing directly on to your radiator which would make it just that much more effective if i were truly doing this scientifically i would have a full system build in here i put it under a stress test we'd see how bad the temperatures are then we'd cut all these holes in it we'd see the temperature improves i don't need to waste your time with science saying more air flow equals lesser temperature steve actually has a 67 minute video on that so one of the things that sort of sucks about this case and remember this is going to apply to any case that needs extra fans i did go through a few of our like power spec cases and some of the old corsair cases and even the like beige box type stuff the problem is the old cases tend to have power supplies at the top and i had three different cases here which had absolutely no fans on top and i was like they'd be perfect and then i look inside i'm like no power supply right here which means you can't even mount the fan there you could do this with like a single 120 version because they do have a short one you can put it more up front um but then you have this weird like air coming in and immediately being exhausted you want it to cross flow over stuff so whatever keep that in mind if you're getting this if you have a top mounted power supply it's not exactly going to help but we are going to be mounting one and this has a cool look to it definitely a storm troopery kind of a lick and i kind of like it do i know the truth these are usually people's first case mods are ventilation type mods so first things first i have to make myself a template so i did blue painters tape everywhere i need to make markings as i'm mounting it i need to be mindful of anything underneath here that might be in the way like i said this will already be in the way for sure um of the fan not of the grille and i need to make sure because some cases will have like maybe a cage that comes out slightly or something here for cable routing you won't be mindful of any of that stuff i want this scooted towards the back as far as possible and the first thing i'm going to do here is i'm going to take some measurements to make sure i get it centered and i'm going to make a square that's the outer perimeter that way i know i'm going to be making two lines the inner cuts for the fan and the outer cuts for um the perimeter and like i said the fans have to be able to drop through that hole so they have to be at least bigger than the fan cage so i'll probably use the fans to mount uh or to use as a template once i get that all mounted down it also doesn't have to be absolutely perfect but obviously the more perfect the better like if you were to mount it like you know like that sure it'll be functional but it'll just look like i did it all right so this case is 21 centimeters wide actually just under that it's like 200 and like a you know 290 millimeters you mean 209 no wait is there 10 centimeters in a millimeter yeah that's how magic works they didn't send me the american ruler anytime i have to do measuring on this channel i'm screwed because if i conform to metric then all my like super america viewers are like dirty it's the freedom units if the markings correct i don't we could call it how many potatoes is it i don't care if you care about that you need some priority management so i made three silver dots on the inside with of the you see one right there when it there went there those are measured perfectly halfway are the width so that way i lined it up on my center line on the case now i know that we're centered so i'm going to now tape this down for a moment mark my outer perimeter here as well as my holes so we need to mark that like that that's when belly fat comes in handy you just shove it in your gut look at that now i know where i have to make my cuts and stuff and once i determine where my cut lines are actually going to be then i'm going to use like a marker that way it's nice and dark now normally i would use a dremel or rotary tool and a cutting disc but i want to make quick work of this so i chose the cutting grinder wheel i'm smiling you just can't see it as long as we stay within the outer perimeter any ugly cuts won't matter that's why i did an outer perimeter so i haven't got like a guide safe zone nothing's safe though when jay has an angle grinder well nzxt we fix the airflow problem it's important not to go and slip otherwise you'll have some pretty ugly stuff visible all right let's cut the top all right so we got our holes mount or drilled for the mount and then we've got our hole here we've got to clean that up though that is extremely rough one thing you got to keep in mind too is that it's going to be visible from the inside as well so if you're really anal about this this would be a lot easier if the front panel came off it just doesn't on this case you could touch you could file that down smooth which we have to do that's all like those burrs that cutting disc is designed to just rip through something but it ain't gonna do it very pretty um you need to clean those burrs off and then you could touch up with like white paint around this i just tried to cut myself white paint around the edge with black case black paint sharpie something but i managed to cut these holes without cutting me or through something on the back side remember check your back stops that applies to several hobbies anyway check your backstop these are these are the fun case mods especially when they're fully functional like this like two more intakes another exhaust fan you don't have to rely on just the stupid little like perforated holes on that side so we got our holes in there and they're all cleaned up one thing i'm kind of curious about is they did give us these self-threading fan screws and i'm wondering and they look long they might be long enough to allow us instead of having to do the sandwich thing on here that we would be able to have them pass through both the grille and the fan so let's see here hey all right so that makes things a lot easier so to mount the grille it actually calls for like sheet metal screws to just ride through the sheet metal i don't want to do that um so i ended up drilling holes and i will be using these bolts or these nuts and screws that were initially holding the fan grills on um the downside about this exact case is the fact that because the front panel doesn't come off tightening them is going to be difficult but by taking off the radiator um mounting plate i can still get in here from the inside to tighten them down the question is are they going to fit in there in my hole yay look at that that already looks so freaking good well there you go it's on the front it's on the top we've got four more fans well three more fans technically added to our case just to show you the inside you can see there's still like there's enough room for me to put my hand between the fan and the radiator bracket for the front mounted aio mount so you could still have aio and fans here so essentially it'd be like a push pull almost you'd have direct air feeding that radiator which is nice cold air tons of it not just from the slit on the side and uh if you don't even put fans there you just leave these on the front take that bracket out entirely and then you've got just direct airflow now they don't have any fan filters i mean you can't add fan filters to fans by putting that screen material in between it would be something sort of like this i'm one of those people that never puts fan uh filters on my systems i'd much rather have the airflow and just clean them more often and i found that once the fan filters clog up the dust just gets in somewhere else anyway and then the two on the top as you can see exhausting air now some might say well jay that's negative pressure now because you have two intake fans and um three exhaust fans you could take the rear fan off if you want or do like i do control the rpms of the fans so that you can slow down the exhaust fans speed up the intake fans and balance the airflow that way you don't have to just go by fan count to determine what's considered intake exhaust and positive pressure negative pressure or neutral pressure but there you go i figured this would be a very fun video to do um you don't need an angle grinder to do this it just literally took me probably not even a minute per hole to make with this whereas a dremel i've been sitting there forever changing out wheels because this is a steel case i'll put the link down in the description below i'm going to buy a couple more before you guys go there and probably sell them out and if you want these i suggest you go and buy them now because you the price might go up it sucks because every time we do a video about something cool and cheap they go hey some famous youtuber guy did a video on our stuff and it sold out let's raise the price so if you want it don't hesitate links down below thanks for watching oh and speaking of wanting stuff christmas time is pretty much here and we have got obviously merch down available right below this video you guys will find uh there's a thing there it's like a i don't know a widget if you will our gaming mats we still have gaming mats available as well as pre-sale on our gpu evolution shirt which is already selling out fast they'll be available here uh for the next couple weeks so if you guys want one this is your chance to actually make sure you get one before they are actually in stock and then sell out immediately you guys can guarantee that you get it thanks for watching guys as always we'll see in the next one oh and then check out yesterday's video right hereso recently i was shopping for some stuff for the star wars
