The Underrated Supra- MK3 Supra Review!

The 1987 Barre3 Supra: A Rare Breed with a Turbocharged Twist

As I stepped into the driver's seat of this 1987 Barre3 Supra, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and curiosity. The original owner had redone the entire car, which piqued my interest. What was even more intriguing was that this particular Supra came with a turbocharger, slapping an additional 7 psi on the engine's naturally aspirated 3J inline-6. This modification makes the power output around 300 horsepower at the wheels, and it's linear in nature, making it feel very predictable.

The car's transmission is a 5-speed W58, which is backed up by the 3M naturally aspirated engine. The combination of these two components is reportedly seamless, with no noticeable lag or hesitation when accelerating. However, some reliability issues have been reported over the years due to the turbocharger, but that hasn't deterred this owner, who has kept the car for five years.

One aspect that caught my attention was the gearbox and shifter. The third-to-fourth gear transition is particularly satisfying, while the first and second gears require a bit more force to engage. This shifter is certainly "nachi," as the reviewer put it, and demands some physical effort to get into gear. Despite its analog nature, this car still offers an exhilarating driving experience.

The boost from the turbocharger is quite evident, particularly when cruising on the highway with the 5-speed transmission. When I hit the gas pedal, there's hardly any lag or hesitation before the power kicks in, making it a pleasure to drive. The reviewer attributes this sensation to the small size of the turbocharger, which allows for instant torque and makes the car feel very responsive.

Another feature that stands out is the attention to detail in this 1987 Barre3 Supra. Even features like electric windows, power seats, and air conditioning are present, showcasing the car's luxurious interior. This was a significant selling point back in the day, as American cars were often criticized for lacking such comforts.

While the reviewer does mention that the brakes could use some work, the overall experience of driving this car is undeniable. The combination of its powerful turbocharged engine and precise gearbox makes it an exciting drive on the roads. So, if you're a fan of rare and unique cars with a hint of performance, the 1987 Barre3 Supra might be worth checking out.

What's Next for This Car?

The reviewer ends the video by thanking everyone who watched and invites them to join him again next time. With its blend of power, comfort, and rarity, this car has earned its place in many enthusiasts' hearts. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting your car-hunting journey, the 1987 Barre3 Supra is definitely worth considering for its unique blend of performance and style.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up ladies and gentlemen to here once again for another car review and today we're in a 1987 barre3 Supra it is pretty badass because I haven't done a mark 3 super yet and one other thing about it is has the original 7 m in it it was a naturally aspirated Mark 3 Supra but the original owner basically redid the entire car but the thing about it too is that there's a turbo slapped on it makes 7 psi makes right around say 300 ish to the wheels and it's very linear power and it's not scary and it works perfectly plus the transmission and everything in harmony can take the power everything's backed up w 58 transmission and with the 7 M connected to it can't really go wrong but a lot of people always wondered why were these in America like one DC from the factory actually thought they were believe it or not but they weren't and in Japan they were but in America they weren't and I think a big part of that was because you know the important scene was still getting bigger in America so they probably were a little questionable about putting the 1 J in it so soon when the mark 4 was coming Zhu Zhu but the mark 3 super is kind of I would say an ugly duckling of the bunch I think it looks great I actually used to get it confused with the FCR x7 well as a kid because the body lines has that hatch on the pack kind of like a 240 or something along those lines but the FC and this have pretty close body lines it's the era of flip up headlights onto everything with the mark 3 they're really good platforms but people always overlook them because they want the mark but who can blame them the mark 4 has that legacy of fast and furious a Paul Walker and it looks awesome and it looks timeless this definitely looks of its time but I think it's still pretty charming about it hey Vaughn this is really good quality this black looks awesome the interior is charcoal and most of it is really well put together pretty much no rattles or anything like that and am honestly surprised I've been doing a lot of these Japanese cars from you know late 80s Early 90s recently and I've noticed that their interiors hold up and it's really impressive don't get me wrong there's like some plastics here there but that's just part of the time speedometer doesn't work but a lot of that has to do with the wiring harness occasionally the wiring harness kind of cuts out and out and the motor itself is basically perfect the whole thing is rebuilt has like 10k miles on it but other than that it's all wiring issues it also has HKS Hyper's max coil overs on it which don't you love that they use an I it is trying to be so edgy although with that has an HKS exhaust in the rear but the rest of it is just a turbo back all the way to that HKS one of the HKS coil overs however has a bend in it so in the rear the car wants to start swaying this way so if I let go just slightly it starts to go the other it kind of feels like the cars out of alignment that's really much all it is but you're holding it straight ad you barely even feel it the car still handles great especially with the Momo steering wheel the thing looks awesome it was funny the owner Derek was saying yeah people don't know that they still make parts for this car but people have a really big cult following of the mark 3 Supra just kind of hidden somewhere in the depths of the car scene when people get mr3 they keep them forever the owner of this car now is in the car basically five years they usually thought about selling it because of the reliability issues of the 7m but it's still bored of them and he's kept the car so one thing about the gearbox in this is the shifter is so intense like it's so nachi that you have to physically like force it into gear the third to fourth though is really satisfying when you do that when you go first a second I'm like bogging because I'm trying to be nice to the car but then it's just like get the really pull straight down the W 58 is a five-speed transmission overall and no 6th gear the fact that 6 beats where it is common but now we have like 8 speed to what's next in this world pedal feel itself and the brakes is really soft it's not very sensitive safe they're pretty much go all the way down a blow-off out though oh yeah dude third year is awesome it's super linear and you just go 7n feels good when it's done right you're not going to get like the dramatic sensation of like a 2j or even a 1j but it's very reminiscent of that I always looked at the 7m as like the grandfather of the 1j because it just had the same kind of mentality inline-6 and it just goes all the power is up top once you get up top it really starts to pull and it feels like a solid boosted car it feels like the car could have come like this honestly see like it's no big deal and you get a nice ball foul so that's that's a good that's a plus sounds good okay bigger brakes please now that I've gone a little bit faster I definitely think the brakes could use a little bit of work but just got to be cautious so one thing I want to talk about this boost is evident is the gas mileage and when you're in this city it gets like under ten that's insane for me to think about like a toyota doing under ten miles per gallon but when you're on the highway cruising and with the five speed it gets like twenty which is fine but it shows how far technology has come with the inline sixes and everything else that it makes that less the gas mileage which is pretty shocking but you know what you're not buying a super for the gas mileage so argument invalid the gearbox is so tough okay yep I need a Great War I'm waiting a little too late to break oh yeah also this car has no abs and pretty much no driver aid so it's really analog guessing themself so the turbo in this is a 57-millimeter and that's why it's pulls up so darn quick there's hardly any lag so when you get in it you're basically getting your reward instantly and that's what I love about small turbo sometimes and that's why a lot of big brands use such small turbos because they realize for even daily commutes or stuff like that sake psst mazdaspeed3 Focus RS all those guys use really tiny turbos because of the torque and this motor feels really torquey when it's not just a massive turbocharger on it you feel like you can have a lot of fun I'd say a back road because you can get into that instant boost in instant power love that some oh yeah well I'm sitting here waiting for Thomas the train engine in front of me I would like to add that a ton of stuff in this car for a 1987 is electric and like even the seat Z I'm scooting up and back the windows are all at trick all that was usually an option in the 80s especially with American cars American cars cheaped out on you in the 80s but like the Honda Prelude and those cars from the 80s all had electric windows and that was a big deal at the time I know that sounds like a minor thing now because every car has them but it was a big deal back then I remember I was a little kid even like I was like that car has power windows that's so cool alright guys or thank every single one of you for watching this quick little review video I had a fantastic time driving this mark 3 Supra and it's a lot of fun it's a great car it's one of those cars that without the mark backfire without the mark 3 there would have been the mark 4 so you should probably thank mark 3 thank you all so much big things to Derek for let me try this car and I'll see you guys next time take it easy have a fantastic day you\n"
