Popular TIKTOK Reads... do they live up to the hype!
Tick Tock Books: A Personal Review of Recent Reads
As I sit here reflecting on my recent reads, I have to say that I'm feeling quite meh about some of them. Not because I dislike them per se, but more because they just didn't live up to the hype surrounding them. One such book is "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera. I tend to have mixed feelings on Adam Silvera's books - they either work for me or they don't - and this one was a bit of a disappointment. The story revolves around two teenagers who receive a text message that informs them they will both die in the next 24 hours, and that they are connected through an unknown service to be their companion during these final hours. While I appreciated the unique premise, the execution fell flat for me.
On the other hand, "We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart was a complete surprise. I hadn't read it in ages, but somehow it had ended up on my shelves at home (perhaps courtesy of my parents?). As I picked it up and began to read, I was transported back in time to when I first read this book years ago. The story is a ghostly tale that follows the narrator as she uncovers the dark secrets behind her privileged summer on an island with her family. What struck me most about this book was its ability to tug at my heartstrings and leave me utterly bewildered by its plot twists. I didn't see any of it coming, including the finale, which reduced me to tears.
Another book that holds a special place in my heart is "So Much Love" by Sarah Crossan. This one was a blast from the past - I'd read it so long ago and had almost forgotten about it. The story follows a young woman who embarks on a road trip with her friends, during which she experiences a series of surreal and often unsettling events. What struck me most about this book was its ability to explore themes of love, loss, and the human condition in a way that felt both deeply personal and universally relatable.
My experience with "Cersei" by Madeline Miller was decidedly different. As a huge fan of Greek mythology, I was eager to dive into this book and learn more about one of its most infamous figures. Unfortunately, my lack of knowledge about the subject matter made the book feel like a chore to read through. The story follows Cersei as she navigates the treacherous world of ancient Greece, and while it did offer some interesting insights into her backstory, I found myself struggling to keep track of the various characters and plot threads.
One book that did capture my attention was "A Serpent & Dove" by Shelby Mahurin. While I'm sad to say that this series didn't live up to my expectations, I do think it's worth reading for fans of witchy stories with a strong focus on character development. The main protagonist, Lou, is a young woman who possesses magical abilities and finds herself caught in the midst of an ancient struggle between good and evil.
In contrast to "A Serpent & Dove", Adam Silvera's "They Both Die at the End" was a clear standout for me. As I mentioned earlier, this book tells the story of two teenagers who receive a text message informing them that they will both die in the next 24 hours, and that they are connected through an unknown service to be their companion during these final hours. While it was a difficult subject matter to tackle, Silvera's writing was both poignant and powerful, making for a truly unforgettable reading experience.
As I reflect on my recent reads, I have to admit that "They Both Die at the End" and "We Were Liars" are definitely two of the books that stand out in my mind. While they may not have all been perfect, they were both unique and memorable in their own ways, and left me with a lasting impression long after I finished reading them.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eneveryone it's hailey and today i'm going to be talking about tick tock and book talk in particular and whether the books that are recommended constantly on there are really as good as tits as they are so i'm super excited about today's video because it's something that i've never really done before but i have never really had an outsider's perspective on bookish social media but i definitely do with tick tock because i don't use tick tock so i had to ask you guys and i also asked some of my friends that i know are involved in book talk which books they constantly see now you guys were super helpful with this and i have a list here that there are some that without even engaging with tick tock i knew were talked about constantly there but there were some that i didn't know were talked about all the time that came up a lot so i just am including the books that came up the most in those instagram dms so there might be some books that you see constantly that aren't on this list but i think this is a pretty good place to start i'm just not really into tic toc like i try to limit my social media time so i know that if i had it i would just never stop so the only things that i really see are the ones that make their way to reals but even that i don't really watch them a lot unless they come up on my news feed or anything because i don't really go on my explore page a lot but when i did my video for bookmas talking about the most hyped books of the year i noticed that there were a couple of books that were mentioned that were more popular like back in the day on booktube and on bookstagram and stuff like that and i was like it's weird that so many people talked about them recently but then someone mentioned it's because of tick tock and it like opened a whole new world to me i was like that makes so much sense so i think tick tock is a really great platform for book recommendations like they're quick they're snappy but i see a lot of books that are recommended a lot and i want to talk about my personal opinion so this is just my opinion whether i think these books really live up to all the hype that tick tock has been giving them obviously you might have different feelings than me but i just thought this was really interesting because they are books that i have read way back in the day none of them are really things that i have read recently so we're going to be going way back in time with a lot of things that were hyped up a while ago on booktube i do have plans to do a reading vlog where i read some of tick tock's most popular books that are recommended all the time so one is i think i'm gonna get that new jennifer l armitro because i've seen that one come up quite a bit and then also song of achilles is recommended quite a bit and i forget what else i was planning on reading for that vlog i don't really know but i do have a list for that vlog actually but today let's get into finally because that was a really long intro i'm sorry whether these books are really good so without even going on tick tock the book that i knew was the most recommended or really the author is sarah j maas sarah j maas just has a way of going viral to be honest and she has like oh my gosh i'm so i'm sorry i didn't mean to throw that i'm not mad at it anyways she has a really dedicated following that just keeps growing and growing and growing and i haven't read her most recent book which is her adult fantasy crescent city but i have read the throne of glass series apart from the last book i know and i have read a court of thorns and roses as well and do i think these are worth the read yes do i think they're over hyped i think they can be a little bit just because it's one of those books like with that hyped books video i every time someone said sarah j maas there was like an eye roll emoji next to it because i get it it's one of those books that you hear about so much that you're like okay i get it people love it but i get why it's like that it is really super addicting she is a great writer and as much as there are issues with these series they are just really really addictive to read they are just something you can't really stop with once you start and you want to know what's going to happen and there is so much going on there is a great romance in each of these and you don't really know like which way it's going to go either so you're kind of kept guessing and there also is a lot of political intrigue so it's not just a one-layered story even though these are completely different worlds and completely separate i think each of them managed to suck me in and totally encapsulate me in that world and i think that's what she does best she completely like grabs you and doesn't let go until you're done with the book so totally understand why these get so much love and i do think that they deserve the hype maybe they get a little bit too much and there are some other books that are kind of similar that are also worth the read but i do understand where it's coming from throne of glass is the story of an assassin who is in a competition i haven't talked about this book in so long to be honest i used to talk about it all the time but i feel like i haven't talked about it in forever but it is one of the first like fantasies i feel like i read when i was on booktube but the other book a court of thorns and roses this is a series that is about fae so the main character ends up making this mistake and she ends up having to be held captive so it's a beauty and the beast retelling but she's being held captive by fae and it is it's a wild ride honestly like this series is indescribable it does get really mature in the second book so arguably it's not really why i am the second book but teach their own like whatever you can handle but there is some explicit content for sure speaking of fae next up is the cruel prince by holly black this is not only a series that is hyped up on tick tock like every single book at here actually this is true of these aren't just books that have been hyped up on tick tock they also have had their shining moment on bookstagram and on booktube but this one went like wild and it was absolutely everywhere and i have read the first book of the series but i haven't continued with it yet so do i think that this is worth the read yes but i don't love it as much as everyone else seems to i think it was a really cool and engaging fantasy story you have the world of fae being mixed with like the modern world and you have a mortal character who is getting all wrapped up in that and there is a lot of that political intrigue you would expect from that the whole fae world and i did like that clashing of like the world that i know with such a unique fantasy but i just think this one was a little bit over hyped for me personally so i would say just maybe lower your expectations a little bit i think everyone was just going wild for it so i was thinking it was going to completely blow me away but i don't regret having read it it's just not my favorite fantasy ever i do understand though a lot of people are super into the romance of this series and that like i thought it was good but i didn't love it so i think that might be part of it too a lot of people are obsessed with that romance so that i can understand next up is actually a book that i read recently and i am glad that it has been getting hyped up a lot on tick tock so obviously i do think it's worth the read but that is legend born by tracy dion so for sure i would say that this one deserves the hype that it has been getting it is pretty like city of bones-esque in the fact that it's an urban fantasy but this deals with king arthur and there's a lot of legends surrounding it and it is such a multi-faceted story you deal with the main character who is grieving the loss of her mother and you see her going through that grief and coping with that and learning more about the history of this fantastical world that she never even knew existed but also her own family's history and trying to overcome the grief that she's experiencing and move on with her life well her world has basically been turned upside down so the main character like i said she has lost her mother recently but she is going to this away program she's in high school but the college that she's going to has this away program for high school students that she's attending and she ends up witnessing a magical act on her first night there this magical crime so then it ends up unearthing powers in her that she had no clue that even were a possibility or that she had it all so really interesting story and i'm super excited to read more from this author and the sequel for this for sure but this audiobook took me forever to listen to as you guys probably know but once i finished with it it was entirely worth it so definitely a great one next up is six of crows by leigh bardugo so i'm sure you guys know if you watch my videos i would definitely say that this is worth the read i love leigh bardugo honestly she is my favorite author i love her writing love her characters everything about it just so great and six of crows is one of my favorites by her particularly cricket kingdom i think is my favorite but the netflix adaptation that is coming out for the grishaverse i am so excited for and it's actually not that far away which is equal parts terrifying and so exciting but six of crows just has this like ragtag team that is going on a heist and it is high stakes you have great characters you have a lot of different relationships and kind of everything that i want from a fantasy keeps me on the edge of my seat has some great romances and i love the multi-perspectives in here it is just an interesting world and such a great universe to be in you can tell how well thought out it is and i totally get why people always really hype this up because i am also guilty of that because it is just entirely something that is going to suck you in these characters are going to completely like nestle themselves in your heart and you're not even going to know they're there and then you're going to be like i love them so much whenever anything happens to them you're going to want to protect them and you're sad that you can't next is red white and royal blue by casey mcquiston so we're kind of starting off with the books that i do think are worth the read because i'm going to start off with the ones that i do actually physically own and then the rest on this list i don't own anymore for whatever reason usually it's because i didn't like them so much but that's not true of all of them so red white and royal blue for sure is worth the read this book is so so good it is such a cute romance between the first son of the president of i almost said england why do i always struggle with this so much the first son of the president of the united states and henry prince of wales i literally just filmed a video where i was talking about this book and i also struggled so much with that but it is the most lovely romance i just oh i love it so much because it has some political things going on there's a lot of really great social commentary but it is also hilarious and adorable all at once so it has a lot going for it and there's totally a reason why no one can stop talking about this book because it really will sweep you off your feet like i thought there was no way i was going to live up to the hype but it truly did and i fell in love and i think you will too so definitely worth the read and the final one that i still own is the selection series by kira kass i'm not surprised at all that this has been getting hyped up a lot on tick tock because i read this when i first started booktube and i totally like fell in love with it i read all three books of the original trilogy in three days because i couldn't put them down i was just like on the edge of my seat for this series which is a combination of it's like the bachelor but if the bachelor were a prince so royalty and the intrigue of the bachelor it is a great combination and really enjoyable so now for the books that i don't own or i don't have here so some of these books i don't have here because i have them like in storage because i don't have enough room on my bookshelves so i have them at my parents house because once i move to a bigger house then i will take them out and like actually have them on my shelves because you guys ask all the time where do you put your new books and like i put them in various places around the house but i also will have some books that are older that i enjoy that i just take off of my shelves for the time being so one of those series that i have taken off of my shelves for the time being is anything by cassandra clare but particularly the infernal devices and uh city of bones what's it called the mortal instruments series well i blanked there sorry so cassandra clare has been hyped up forever and i feel like those are the first fantasy books that i ever really remember reading and i fell in love with them when i read them so i do really understand but personally i do think the hype is a little bit much because it can be so intimidating it's like sarah j maas you see it everywhere and it's this giant universe there are so many books in that same world and from someone like me who doesn't really like really long series i think it's worth the read but go in cautiously because it really can be intimidating how much people absolutely adore it next is red queen by victoria aveyard so this book was super hyped up leading to it coming out and i remember it was like years ago and i remember them actually having it out at costco early and i was so excited and i read it and this one i don't think is worth the read i was not impressed this like i was so excited for it but nothing about it really blew me away i was left feeling like the story was kind of lacking and i didn't understand why there was so much buzz surrounding it now i know a lot of people had an opposite experience and read it and really loved it and that's great but i think i just read so many books around that time that were kind of similar that i didn't feel like this one offered anything that the other books didn't give me and i'm not saying that everything has to be completely unique but i just didn't feel like it did anything better than those other books that i had read so it wasn't really adding anything new to my reading experience and so i don't really think that it's worth all the hype that it gets next is a curso dark and lonely by bridget kamermer so this one's kind of hard because i didn't hate this book i had a lot of issues with it but i also think it had a lot of things that it did really well i loved the representation that it offered it has a main character who has cerebral palsy and i thought that was really great but this is a beauty and the beast retelling and i felt really disconnected from it and i just i i think this one is like kind of worth the read but i think if you've read some other beauty and the beast retellings like there are fantasies that i have enjoyed more so there are reasons that i think it was worth the read but i felt like the story was kind of confusing and it kind of jumped around everywhere and that just left me feeling really meh about it so i don't hate it by any means i just think that it does get like so much love and i am glad that it gets as much love as it does because like like i said it does have some really great representation to it but for me personally this was just kind of a letdown and maybe it was all the hype surrounding it but it just wasn't really what i was hoping for next is we were liars by e lockhart so i was so surprised when i was looking at my bookshelves to find this book that i don't have it anymore so i must have it at my parents house or something because i don't think i would have unhauled it but this is like a blast from the past this book i read it so so so long ago and i kind of forgot about it like not in a bad way like i do think this one is worth the read but it is one that there are a lot of mixed opinions on i fall on the side of really enjoying it i did not see any of the plot twists coming and it like totally made me bawl my eyes out which does not happen often with books for me personally so it just like had me ma'am but i actually remember we were driving back from ottawa at this point because we were visiting there and i was reading it in the car and just sobbing because i was like what is happening but it's like a ghost story like you kind of don't know what's happening it's really interesting unlike anything i've ever read before i feel like but it's been so long since i've read it and i do like i'm glad that this one is getting some love because i think it is really cool next is cersei by madeline miller so this is by the author of song of achilles which i said i'm going to be reading for that vlog but this one i i have very mixed feelings on cersei i think this one if you really like greek mythology and you're really into mythology in general then absolutely it's worth the read but i think if you don't really have a basis of knowledge in mythology you might be kind of confused and then i would say it's not really worth the read so for me i didn't really know a lot about mythology going into it and i found myself very bored the entire time while reading it so it's the story of cersei and that's just who you're following and it gave me an interesting backstory but like there was just a lot of characters and i was kind of confused so i think that might just be a me problem but like i said this is just like my personal opinion so it really depends on how you feel about mythology and if that is something that you really like then definitely give it a go next is they both die at the end by adam silvera i tend to have really mixed feelings on adam silvera's books they just either work for me or they don't but they both die at the end i think is worth the read i did really like this one it is a story where you get a text message the day that you're gonna die and it's like this service that you can be connected to where you get connected to someone who will be your companion for your last hours of living so it's like a really hard story obviously i mean they both die at the end but so unique and one that's definitely going to tug on your heartstrings and really pull you in and the final book is a serpent and dove by shelby mchurin so this one i'm really sad but this one i would say isn't worth the read i know so many people love this series and maybe once again my expectations were too high going into it but i just did not and i was hoping i would because the main character has the same last name as me which i thought was really cool but i just like i kept waiting for it to get as good as people were saying and it just didn't so it's a witchy story and it's like victorian and it's like this angsty romance but like apart from the angst of the romans there wasn't really a lot else happening and i didn't feel like it was enough to carry me through the story so i unfortunately didn't really like it i'm sorry so that is all for tick tock books and whether i think they are worth the read or not please let me know what other books do you see on tik tok all the time i found this really interesting and if you wanted me to do another version of this i can do that for you guys because i thought it was really fun but thank you guys so much for watching today's video i hope you enjoyed and i will see you in the next one bye youeveryone it's hailey and today i'm going to be talking about tick tock and book talk in particular and whether the books that are recommended constantly on there are really like on the edge of my seat for this series which is a combination of it's like the bachelor but if the bachelor were a prince so royalty and the intrigue of the bachelor it is a great combination and really enjoyable so now for the books that i don't own or i don't have here so some of these books i don't have here because i have them like in storage because i don't have enough room on my bookshelves so i have them at my parents house because once i move to a bigger house then i will take them out and like actually have them on my shelves because you guys ask all the time where do you put your new books and like i put them in various places around the house but i also will have some books that are older that i enjoy that i just take off of my shelves for the time being so one of those series that i have taken off of my shelves for the time being is anything by cassandra clare but particularly the infernal devices and uh city of bones what's it called the mortal instruments series well i blanked there sorry so cassandra clare has been hyped up forever and i feel like those are the first fantasy books that i ever really remember reading and i fell in love with them when i read them so i do really understand but personally i do think the hype is a little bit much because it can be so intimidating it's like sarah j maas you see it everywhere and it's this giant universe there are so many books in that same world and from someone like me who doesn't really like really long series i think it's worth the read but go in cautiously because it really can be intimidating how much people absolutely adore it next is red queen by victoria aveyard so this book was super hyped up leading to it coming out and i remember it was like years ago and i remember them actually having it out at costco early and i was so excited and i read it and this one i don't think is worth the read i was not impressed this like i was so excited for it but nothing about it really blew me away i was left feeling like the story was kind of lacking and i didn't understand why there was so much buzz surrounding it now i know a lot of people had an opposite experience and read it and really loved it and that's great but i think i just read so many books around that time that were kind of similar that i didn't feel like this one offered anything that the other books didn't give me and i'm not saying that everything has to be completely unique but i just didn't feel like it did anything better than those other books that i had read so it wasn't really adding anything new to my reading experience and so i don't really think that it's worth all the hype that it gets next is a curso dark and lonely by bridget kamermer so this one's kind of hard because i didn't hate this book i had a lot of issues with it but i also think it had a lot of things that it did really well i loved the representation that it offered it has a main character who has cerebral palsy and i thought that was really great but this is a beauty and the beast retelling and i felt really disconnected from it and i just i i think this one is like kind of worth the read but i think if you've read some other beauty and the beast retellings like there are fantasies that i have enjoyed more so there are reasons that i think it was worth the read but i felt like the story was kind of confusing and it kind of jumped around everywhere and that just left me feeling really meh about it so i don't hate it by any means i just think that it does get like so much love and i am glad that it gets as much love as it does because like like i said it does have some really great representation to it but for me personally this was just kind of a letdown and maybe it was all the hype surrounding it but it just wasn't really what i was hoping for next is we were liars by e lockhart so i was so surprised when i was looking at my bookshelves to find this book that i don't have it anymore so i must have it at my parents house or something because i don't think i would have unhauled it but this is like a blast from the past this book i read it so so so long ago and i kind of forgot about it like not in a bad way like i do think this one is worth the read but it is one that there are a lot of mixed opinions on i fall on the side of really enjoying it i did not see any of the plot twists coming and it like totally made me bawl my eyes out which does not happen often with books for me personally so it just like had me ma'am but i actually remember we were driving back from ottawa at this point because we were visiting there and i was reading it in the car and just sobbing because i was like what is happening but it's like a ghost story like you kind of don't know what's happening it's really interesting unlike anything i've ever read before i feel like but it's been so long since i've read it and i do like i'm glad that this one is getting some love because i think it is really cool next is cersei by madeline miller so this is by the author of song of achilles which i said i'm going to be reading for that vlog but this one i i have very mixed feelings on cersei i think this one if you really like greek mythology and you're really into mythology in general then absolutely it's worth the read but i think if you don't really have a basis of knowledge in mythology you might be kind of confused and then i would say it's not really worth the read so for me i didn't really know a lot about mythology going into it and i found myself very bored the entire time while reading it so it's the story of cersei and that's just who you're following and it gave me an interesting backstory but like there was just a lot of characters and i was kind of confused so i think that might just be a me problem but like i said this is just like my personal opinion so it really depends on how you feel about mythology and if that is something that you really like then definitely give it a go next is they both die at the end by adam silvera i tend to have really mixed feelings on adam silvera's books they just either work for me or they don't but they both die at the end i think is worth the read i did really like this one it is a story where you get a text message the day that you're gonna die and it's like this service that you can be connected to where you get connected to someone who will be your companion for your last hours of living so it's like a really hard story obviously i mean they both die at the end but so unique and one that's definitely going to tug on your heartstrings and really pull you in and the final book is a serpent and dove by shelby mchurin so this one i'm really sad but this one i would say isn't worth the read i know so many people love this series and maybe once again my expectations were too high going into it but i just did not and i was hoping i would because the main character has the same last name as me which i thought was really cool but i just like i kept waiting for it to get as good as people were saying and it just didn't so it's a witchy story and it's like victorian and it's like this angsty romance but like apart from the angst of the romans there wasn't really a lot else happening and i didn't feel like it was enough to carry me through the story so i unfortunately didn't really like it i'm sorry so that is all for tick tock books and whether i think they are worth the read or not please let me know what other books do you see on tik tok all the time i found this really interesting and if you wanted me to do another version of this i can do that for you guys because i thought it was really fun but thank you guys so much for watching today's video i hope you enjoyed and i will see you in the next one bye you\n"
