Vivo V7 Unboxing & Hands-On

Unboxing and Hands-on with Vivo V7: A New Player in the Budget Smartphone Market

We've already unboxed this phone, now it's time to inbox this one. Hi I'm Michael Josh and you're watching Gadget Match. You may recall, I think it was about a month ago when we unboxed Vivo's first borderless smartphone. This phone is that phone's little brother or sister in this video, we'll find out what's inside the box and also compare it to the Plus model.

As we start our unboxing process, we need to peel off this plastic and we have a brand new exacto knife for that purpose. Are you ready? Wait, I think there's a seal. Yep, there's a seal. Okay, let's remove this little tray here also in the box, another box with a sim ejector tool, and inside this I believe it's a clear plastic jelly case. Three more things to go: a white USB charger, USB cable, and a pair of white earphones.

Okay, now let's get the wrapper off this phone. I know it slides down, but let's pull on the tab and make some pull tab noise. Okay, let's dive into some initial impressions. I like the overall build of the phone; it has a nice metallic like finish to it, although I believe it's actually hard plastic. There are two antenna bands in silver that dart across the top and bottom back portions of the phone. It has a single 16 megapixel main camera on the back, and the fingerprint sensor is also in the back with that same silver accent around it.

The volume rocker and power button are located on the right, while there's a triple card slot on the left for two nano Sims and a micro SD card. On the bottom of the phone, you'll find a headphone jack, microphone, micro USB port, and speaker grilles. I know I say this over and over, but I would really love to see budget and mid-range phones start shipping with USB type-c ports instead of micro USB. Similar to the Xiaomi Mea 30.

Now that we have both phones out of the box, let's compare them to the bigger V7 Plus model. As you can see, it's only slightly bigger while the V7 Plus is a little bit bigger. I do kind of like the size of the V7; it fits my hand a little bit better. Now, both models come in gold and black, with the gold version having a white face that makes the new aspect ratio a little bit easier to identify. Vivo is calling it a full view display, not necessarily borderless but definitely taller with a small forehead and chin.

During the setup process, you'll be asked if you'd like to use either a fingerprint or your face to unlock the phone. Facial recognition works just like on the V7 Plus and struggles a bit in low-light. The fingerprint sensor, however, is very reliable and one of the fastest we've seen on a phone on the V7 as well as the V7 Plus. You can hide the on-screen buttons and use gestures just like on the iPhone 10th swipe from the bottom left corner to bring up control center and recent apps.

Swipe from the bottom center to go home, and swipe from the lower right corner to go back. There's no denying that this is a selfie smartphone, it has the same face beauty mode that allows you to do things like buffer skin improve your skin tone or whiten your complexion. We let the folks at Gadget Match play around with this phone, and here are some of the selfies they took.

Meanwhile, here are some photos samples and comparison shots with the V7 Plus while I really dig this new aspect ratio. My only complaint if I was to nitpick is that it's only a 720p display, which for most users shouldn't be a big issue but considering what its competition is offering, then some users might feel a little bit shortchanged.

On the other hand, gaming is what's to be expected of a phone in this price point, and NBA 2K 17 plays pretty well on this phone with settings set to medium. So, should you get the Vivo V7 or the V7 Plus at the end of the day? These two are really good selfie smartphones, I do like the addition of this near borderless display. It's also worth pointing out that the Vivo V7 is slightly cheaper than the V7 Plus so if you're on a budget, it makes more sense to go with this model.
