Amazon primes streaming video service to take on Netflix, Hulu

It's Monday, April 18th, 2016, and it looks like it's game on between streaming video Titans Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Up until now, only Amazon Prime members who ponied up $99 a year were privy to the thousands of included Prime movies and TV shows in the vast Amazon library. But no more! Now, for $899 a month, anyone can have access to the same content without the free shipping perk on all other stuff they might want to buy. However, those who sign up will still be able to download their favorite shows for offline viewing and watch them for free on JetBlue flights with Wi-Fi. This new offering lines up in price with both Netflix's and Hulu's services, making it a viable option for consumers looking for an affordable streaming deal.

Personally, I'm never leaving the house again! It's hard to believe how much has changed since 12 years ago when an upstart internet company called Google began working on a massive project to scan pretty much every book in existence and create an enormous content reference database. The goal was ambitious: to create an enormous content library that would be accessible to anyone with an internet connection. While Google wasn't publishing whole books, the project didn't sit well with some authors who felt their work was being digitized without permission or compensation. As a result, lawsuits were eventually filed, and lower court decisions went in favor of Google. Appeals followed, which eventually brought the case to the Supreme Court. In today's decision, the Supreme Court chose not to hear the case, effectively giving Google the green light to continue its project.

More than a decade later, the project to put every word ever written online continues. If you're an anime fan, chances are you've seen Ghost in the Shell probably multiple times. Last week, the already beleaguered live-action version of the movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, was the subject of anime fans' wrath worldwide when a promotional image featuring a dark-haired Scarlet as Major Moko Kusanagi was released. Fans were outraged because the lead role should have been played by a Japanese actor, not an American actress, no matter how talented she may be. The decision to cast Johansson in the role was likely made with good intentions but ultimately backfired, sparking heated debates among anime fans and critics alike.

The controversy surrounding Ghost in the Shell has nothing to do with the movie's artistic merit or its themes of artificial intelligence, consciousness, and what it means to be human. The issue is about representation and respect for the source material. By casting Johansson in a role that should have been played by an Asian actor, the filmmakers seemingly ignored the cultural context and nuances of the anime series on which the movie was based. This mistake has led to accusations of whitewashing and a lack of diversity behind the camera.

In other news related to technology and pop culture, it's worth mentioning that the producers of Ghost in the Shell have also experimented with using special effects to make Johansson look more Asian. These effects are similar to those used in Benjamin Button, where Brad Pitt was digitally aged from youthful spryness to elderly frailty. The idea behind these effects is likely to enhance Johansson's acting performance and create a more convincing representation of the character. However, since Johansson didn't know about this test, it's unclear whether she will be asked to participate in similar makeovers for future roles.
