Initial Impressions of the HTC One Mini
The HTC One Mini has been out there for a while now and I have to say that it was pretty fast when I first turned it on. It boots up quickly due to HTC's quick boot feature, which is a nice touch. The device also seems to produce good sound output, which could be beneficial for music lovers.
Unboxing the HTC One Mini
Upon unboxing the device, we see that there are no frills or unnecessary features. On one side of the phone, we have the 3.5mm headphone jack on this side, and the volume up and down rockers, with nothing else in between. The microphone is located at the top, along with the micro USB slot for charging and syncing. We also find a slot where you can add your micro SIM card.
Looking Around the Device
Moving towards the other end of the device, we have a 4MP Ultra Pixel camera that's capable of shooting full HD videos in 1080p. There is also an LED flash to illuminate the image when needed. Additionally, we find another secondary microphone for noise cancellation. However, it seems that this is not actually used as there is only one front-facing camera on this device, which is a 1.6MP shooter.
The Power Button and Blink Feed
At the top of the device, we have a power button that should boot up quickly due to HTC's quick boot feature. Speaking of which, initial impressions suggest that this phone was pretty fast when turned on. Moving along to the home screen, we see that there are only two buttons: back and home.
The Blink Feed and Home Button
We do find a dedicated logo at the bottom of the device that serves as a button for multitasking tray, but instead of being a dedicated button, it's actually just the HTC logo. To access the multitasking tray, you would need to double-tap this home button, which then takes you to your recent tabs.
Exploring the Android Version
To see what Android version comes pre-installed on this device, we go back to the settings and select "About Software Info". As expected, it's running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Next, we look at the storage tab to see how much storage is available.
Storage and Display
The internal storage of the HTC One Mini comes with 16GB, out of which 10.67GB is available for use. Moving along to the display, it looks pretty nice. Always HTC puts in very good panels on their devices, and this one is no exception.
Software Features
To see what software features come pre-installed on this device, we select "Apps". We find a mix of Google-specific apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail as well as some productive apps like Polaris Office, Dropbox, and PDF Viewer. We also notice that there's not too much junkware installed.
Camera Test
To take a closer look at the camera, let's quickly check out the tap-to-focus feature and shutter lag. The Ultra Pixel camera takes great snaps instantly, with minimal shutter lag and zooming capabilities. Let's just take a few more snaps to see how it performs in different lighting conditions.
Web Browser and RAM/GPU
To test the web browser on this device, let's open up Tech TAS (techtas.com). As expected, pinch-to-zoom is working as intended. Now that we've tested the website with our own hands, let's take a look at the specifications of the device: it comes equipped with 1GB RAM and Adreno 305 GPU.
Conclusion
The HTC One Mini may not be the best option when considering pricing, but if you're willing to overlook the price tag, this device looks promising. Let's wait for my full review for a more in-depth look at this phone's performance.
