"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enGreetings and welcome to a differentkind of thing here on LGR today! Althoughit's not entirely different, it still hasto do with computer games. But this isthe Texaco 2001 Summer Promotion kit:\"Need for Speed,\" item number who cares andan 800 number that may or may not workanymore. This is a very nondescriptpackage because this is something thatwas just sent to all sorts of vendorsaround the country here in the US in2001. Maybe elsewhere too, I know Texaco isa pretty international company. But yeahI remember seeing these back then verybriefly. And then I forgot about themuntil I ran across these packages onceagain on eBay some years ago. So, just atiny bit of context here, even thoughthere's not a whole lot to go on: thiswas apparently some sort of partnershipbetween Texaco, the petroleum company and distributor, and Electronic Arts and somekind of manufacturer of die-cast modelcars. I'm sure I'll find out more in amoment when we get this package open but yeah. Because not only does it come withartwork and branding for the Need forSpeed game but it also comes with anexclusive demo of the game itself forWindows PCs. Now there was a demo thatyou could download for free online, but these, as far as I know, wereexclusive to the packages that were soldin Texaco stores. So gas stations, servicestations, truck stops, what-have-you. Iremember seeing these next to the cashregister in various gas stations justkind of stacked up next to the Slim Jimsand chewable tobacco. Anyway let's goahead and get this thing open becauseI've had this for a while and I've beenitching to get into it and I figured \"ahhwhy not to unbox it?\" And we're gonna tryout the demos as well.Okay, well it looks like we got a notein here from the seller I got it from. It's just saying which ones that it came with. As far as I know though this wassupposed to come with at least oneexample of each of the different carpacks that were available. Okay! Oh wow, this brings back some memories. I workedin retail for... uh, too long. Setting end cap planograms and ohmuhgahd it's allcoming back and I don't like it. Butanyway I'm gonna go ahead and separatethese out into the individual kits butyou can kind of see what's going on there. All right so here are the fivedifferent ones that you could collect! So yeah each one of these comes with adifferent race car model based on areal-world car. And then each one ofthese will also come with their ownindividual demo for Porsche Unleashed. Itis kind of an odd promotion if you thinkabout it. Like you have NASCAR and CART racing in here, and this is a promo for the gamePorsche Unleashed which is all aboutracing through histories in classicPorsches, and there's nothing to do withany of these American racing things. And there have been other Need for Speedthings sold in retail stores too, likeWalmarts, and in fact they still sellthem for different modern games likehere's a Forza Motorsport one sold byHot Wheels. This one actually makes sense becausethis is a car and a configuration thatyou can actually get in the game. And lookat all those like, I kind of want tocollect all those. I just picked this uprandomly when I saw it the other weekand was like \"hey that reminds me of mythings that I, you know!\" All right let'sgo ahead and take a look at theseindividually here and see what we get.All right so first up here is the\"Mario's Last Car.\" It's interesting, itseems to be that the car was likesecondary, they were really selling thedemo to Porsche Unleashed and thecollector car is listed as a bonus. That's interesting. But yes \"custom CD-ROM game inside!\" And this comes with the 1988944 S Turbo Coupe. \"Texaco offers you anexclusive collection of theaward-winning game Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed by Electronic Arts. This samplerseries offers you the mind-numbing...\"Mind-numbing? That's kind of a weirdway to put it. \"...open road racingexperience that Need for Speed ™ isknown for.\" Look at that it's even gotinstallation instructions on the backand some controls right there for the game. So here's the company looks like putit out: Equity Marketing Incorporated, LosAngeles, California. Yeah I was wonderingwho was responsible for actually puttingout this package for EA and Texaco and Iguess that answers that question.I got a little bit off track there butlet's just take a quick look at what theother ones are. So this one here with the2000 911 Turbo, that was an exciting carin 2000. Came with the bonus car thenumber 28 custom Texaco race car. Okay so car number 3 is the 2000 Boxster S andthe bonus car is the number 28Ricky Rudd race car, that one is theofficial Texaco car. Next up the fourthcar here is the special Havoline racecar number 28. Mmkay. And then the version of the game that it comes with, or thedemo, is the 1959 Porsche 356. Very coolclassic convertible. And then finally thefifth car here it comes with the customTexaco race car and this is the 1973 911Carrera RS 2.7 coupe. Mmm that is a lust-worthy mode of transportation.Okay so let's go ahead and open up MarioAndretti's last car here.Alright.Some nice details on there. It's not quite upto the quality of something like a HotWheels or even a Matchbox but it does have rubber wheels and some nice little writing onthere I mean, like, I like the decals. Sothis is the company that makes it? 'Action'something or other.I'm not familiar with that brand at all. There's the CART logo right there, soit is an officially licensed CARTproduct at least. Yeah cool.Okay. And now let's just get to the CD which it lookslike that opens up on the back here.It doesn't look like there's any reallyeasy way to open that... so we're justgonna go for it. I'm curious what the CDslook like exactly because I don't reallyrecall actually having seen what'sinside here. Most sellers just leavethese sealed. Well that's interesting. So we got the game logo right there, \"sampler version,\" got Texaco and EA logos and thenit says which one of these is on thedisc. And it actually says on the back here too, yeah it says the violet package, it says itcomes with the 944 coupe. And here we go, went ahead and opened all of them gotthem all laid out nicely here for you. Each of the cars are pretty much thesame quality, actually not that bad themore I look at them. They just feel likereally cheap in terms of the metal butthe details are nice visually. And ofcourse the CD-ROMs themselves I mean, they're proper CD-ROM pressings, they lookgood. The only thing really distinguishingthem, of course other than the text, isthat little color that associates withthe car demo that it comes with. Enoughunboxing teasing let's go ahead andinstall these demos on Windows 98! I'mcurious if they come with the same trackor anything like that, y'know I'm just curious.Okay so I'm gonna go ahead andtry these demos out in the order of therelease of the cars that we'll be demoing, starting with the 1959 356.Hm, this is already different! \"This samplerversion is intended for promotionalpurposes only,\" and blah blah legal stuff. So this autorun looks pretty much likewhat you would get with the full game, except it's way laggier. And it hasthese different menus here, what is this \"buy the full game,\" what does that do.Website probably? That's an offlinewebsite, that's interesting. \"Buy the gameget a free die-cast miniature race carcomplete with Need for Speed decals! Hurrythis order is available while supplieslast.\" Okay so apparently there was also aTexaco version of Porsche Unleashed?I mean seriously yeah, \"type promotioncode Texaco when you order online.\" Man.I'm curious what that car was that itcame with or the decals or whatever.Alright let's go ahead and play here,\"install the car, race, register\" yeah let'sjust install this car. So this is knownas Texaco Web Demo 3 apparently. Wonderwhy they chose this one to be the thirddemo? Clearly my sorting system by age ofthe car's release in real life is a muchbetter way to sort things out. Heh, so itlooks like it put it in the ElectronicArts folder with my full versions of therest of the games as Texaco Web Demo 3.Okay, let's try this out. Ahh I was wondering how it handled this!So you get a custom menu here just in theautorun and it shows which cars areinstalled. Okay so let's check just thisone and then we'll install the rest of the cars. The user is \"tex.\" Sure let's gowith tex. All right well, that's onething that's different immediately: thereare no background images here andthere's no music either. Kind of makessense, the music it does say it's on butnothing is playing. And of course prettymuch everything else is blanked out asyou would expect. So I'll just gostraight into single player here, we havedifficulty selection -- go with advanced. And we'll do a quick race here and ofcourse that is the only car that we canselect. And just the one track, the Côte d'Azur.Makes sense, that is pretty much thefirst track that you get in the game ifI recall. We can at least choose anycolor we want for the 356 A convertiblehere. And we'll put the roof down becauseheck yeah. And we can select someopponents, we'll just do one.\"Three! Two! One! Go!\" Well it's Need for Speed five, just on one track with one car. Which youknow, that's pretty much what the demowas for just the one you coulddownload online for free for anyone.I only tried it very briefly because Ijust ended up buying the full gameanyway because I knew I wanted it. Whoops. There we go. All right well that's prettymuch all I wanted to know, so let's goahead and install the other cars and seeif we do get any other tracks oranything else with that but I'mdoubting it. Okay so I have all fivediscs installed and they all go into thesame folder here, in Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Need for Speed Texaco Web Demo folder. And we've got five demo folders here. And it's kind of weird it has installedeverything five times, the only thingthat's different is of course the carinformation. So each one of these haseach separate car. Like we saw earlierall of them are right here able to beselected so there really are fivedifferent games. It's just a kind of amessy situation but yeah. This also meansthat if you changed any of the optionslike say, miles per hour to kilometers anhour or the graphics options... then yeah, you'll have to change that every timeyou switch cars. It's the price you payfor not having the full version. Oh wow soyou do get a different track per car!Interesting! So we've got Corsica herelet's go ahead and just try this out.And here we are, a totally new car, new track.\"Three! Two! One! Go!\"Uou actually do have some pretty goodincentive for collecting all five!Y'know, or I guess really just buy thefull version because wow, what a pain tohave to switch completely differentprograms every time you want to tryanother car and track combination.Although it makes me wonder if you cancombine all of them -- oops I was notpaying attention -- if you could combineall of them into one. I might have to trythat here after we try all theseindividual ones. All right and this onecomes with the Alps track. And we had a lot more pre-made colorshere, we're just gonna go with nicebright red. Yeah that's crazy to me thateach one of these actually comes with adifferent track. I was honestly notexpecting that because you know, I didn'tthink that EA would be 'giving away' so much of their goods. Still, of courseyou're missing out on a lot of theexperience: no music and no career modeor anything, but uh. Man I would've beenhappy to have collected these backbefore I bought the full version. Becauselike the normal demo that you got onlinewas something like -- yeah this game doesnot work well with a keyboard like this,I can barely see where I'm going too, thistrack is so dark... Anyway yeah, the normaldemo that you would download for free Ibelieve only had Normandy and like the1995 911 and that was it. What? There's adifferent user this time tex and nenad.Huh! Neh-nad? Nuh-nod? Why is there aseparate user here? Sure okay, so we getthe Industrial Zone, I always liked thatone. It's a very well... industrial-lookingtrack. Yeah whatever it's fine, silverBoxster, four opponents in the industrialzone. It reminded me of EmpireCity and Need for Speed III andunlockable in, well, unlockable in boththree and four. But I am I'm also notnoticing any traffic on any of thesemaybe I just didn'tenable it or it's possible that it doesn'tactually come with any oncoming traffic.I'll have to check on the last last onehere. And the last one is the 911 Turbofrom the year 2000. The title car, the onethat graced the cover art. Alright so wejust got tex this time again. There wego let's see what we got here. Okay, 911Turbo, let's go for nice brightyellow like the cover has. And we haveAuvergne is the track here. No, we cannotactually change the location settings soI guess there just isn't any traffic, which, I mean that makes sense.\"Go!\"GO, HYAUUGHH.I don't actually remember playingthis track a whole lot. Don't remember if it'sbecause I didn't like it or what.Oh I'm fine! Oh man!Ah, this game's a lot of fun.Not ideal with a keyboard whatsoever, butyou know, good game. Gooood game. All right let's try to just combine everythinginto one folder, see if that works. I'llbe shocked if it does. All right,so in theory all we really need arethese three folders. And I mean there'ssome stuff in here too that maydetermine where it's actually going tobe looking, so if it's that involved I'mnot gonna mess with it I'm just gonnatry and copy over everything into onefolder and see if it works.Hey we have our other user again, nenad. Alright single player, quick race...cannot select anything else. I expectedas much really. Just curious if it'llwork with this executable which seemedto give me a car selection thing, like adrop-down menu. Nope it doesn't work atall, we still just get the one car andthe one track of whatever the executableis. So I'm sure that maybe it could bemodified somewhere but I don't rememberenough about the way NFS5's filestructure works. And it mightjust have that blocked off, I'm assumingthat they would try to do that but yeahit's got me curious. At least tentatively but not enough todo it in this video, hehe. I'm definitely glad thatI picked these up when I did because, well, they're just curious releases and I likeexploring things like this on LGR.Especially games that were favorites ofmine back in the day and are obscure-ish releases that I don't really knowmuch about and there's not muchinformation online. So I hope that youenjoyed exploring with me and if you didthen perhaps you'd like to see some moreLGR things. There are new videos righthere every Monday and Friday so staytuned if you'd like. And as always thankyou very much for watching!\n"
