1978 Ferrari 308 GTS - One Take

The Experience of Driving a Ferrari 308

As I approached the Ferrari 308, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The car's sleek design and powerful engine seemed to whisper promises of a thrilling driving experience. I took a moment to appreciate the car's interior, noticing the well-worn Connell leather seats and the aroma of aged leather filling the air. It was clear that this 308 had been well-cared for over the years.

As I climbed into the driver's seat, I couldn't resist the urge to listen to the engine purr through its various settings. The Ferrari 308 is renowned for its high-revving motor, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. At first, I settled into a gentle cruise, but soon found myself accelerating to higher revs as the car began to show off its capabilities. I couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration as the speedometer ticked up and the engine sang its happy song.

One of the most impressive aspects of driving this 308 was its responsiveness. The car seemed to hug the road, responding eagerly to every input from the driver. The steering was precise and communicative, making it clear that this was a car designed for spirited driving. I found myself enjoying the experience so much that I forgot to worry about speed limits – or at least, I tried to ignore them.

As I navigated the twists and turns of the road, I couldn't help but appreciate the 308's smooth and refined nature. The engine never felt strained or rough, even when pushed to its limits. This was a testament to the car's exceptional build quality and attention to detail that Ferrari is famous for. And yet, despite its incredible performance capabilities, this 308 seemed remarkably accessible – like it could be tamed by a novice driver, if they knew how to handle it.

At one point, I found myself chatting with the other drivers on the road, flashing my headlights in a friendly gesture of acknowledgement. It was clear that everyone involved felt at ease behind the wheel – like we were all part of some secret club, united by our love of driving and cars. When it came time to shift gears, the gated shifter proved to be an absolute joy, providing a satisfying "click" as each cog engaged.

The ride itself was surprisingly comfortable, even with the removable roof off. This car seemed designed for those who want to enjoy the thrill of driving without sacrificing comfort – or style. I imagined taking this beautiful machine out on a Swiss mountain pass, feeling the rush of adrenaline as we climbed higher and higher into the Alps.

One question I had lingering in my mind was whether an older model like this 308 could truly compete with newer, more advanced Ferraris. My answer is a resounding no – this car may not have all the bells and whistles of its modern counterparts, but it has something far more valuable: character. It's a reminder that sometimes less is more, and that the simplest pleasures in life can be the most enduring.

As I pulled back into the garage, feeling a little sad to let go of this incredible machine, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such an exceptional Ferrari 308. If you're like me – someone who appreciates the art of driving and the joy it brings – then this is one car that's sure to capture your heart.

spectacular the paint is great and uh they're going to let me have a go in this I haven't oh hello Porsche I haven't driven a 308 in about a decade so uh I hope it goes well uh let's uh there we go the 2.8 L uh 240 horsepower in US spec uh red line is at 7500 RPM uh it's got the four Weber carburetors the engine's transversely mounted in the rear not longitudinally like they do now and these cars were like worthless for 15 years now all of a sudden they're worth money they've actually just sold this one for like 90 grand so these these cars are worth some Cas now and uh you know it's like the old Porsches they're they're slow a modern Accord would probably take this thing but as I will demonstrate uh the Driving Experience is is actually quite lovely uh the seating position is a little strange it's clearly meant for Italians not me not having a roof here really helps uh the steering wheels kind of tilted away and the pedals are really offset so getting it into first which is a a dog leg uh my leg is kind of there but once I'm once I'm out of first so let's see what it's like tell me that doesn't sound great so this car weighs I I are you shaking you're shaking why are you shaking What's loose what is loose hello Shel what's loose what's loose okay sorry about that I had to fix fix that camera okay steering is not power assisted but but it is very light as long as you're going more than parking lot speeds shifter is of course gated which is pretty magnificent you can't shift it you know warp speed but very satisfying Snick Snick when you get into it let's load it up into a corner we do have vintage look but brand new tires front end is kind of light through these Corners I may drive a bit like a dick in order to maximize my efficiency through the corners not a ton of power you know like like most old cars the power really won't impress you but quite Pleasant to drive actually going through the gears is very satisfying they're Synchro so you don't have to do any of the weird double clutching stuff you can just drive it like a normal car there's really nothing weird about how you drive this thing these things 10 years ago were so underappreciated people were racking up miles on them cuz they just they weren't worth anything now all of a sudden they're starting to be worth a lot of money as it goes you know they're they're past minimum cool and they've gone through ironic cool and are now back up into traditional tool easy to heel toe right when you get more than about 90° of steering that's when it gets really heavy is it fast no certainly not fast but it's pretty fun the brakes are brakes are nice and tight as far as uh why is that moving so much all right if that was shaky I believe I just fixed it I apologize for that one uh as far as vintage Ferraris go the maintenance isn't horrible on these uh because the transverse engine a lot of the things that required engine outs in the cars from the 90s you actually don't have to do an engine out with this it sounds great and it feels great it's it's it's an odd seating position but it's also oddly sort of comfortable to make a great weekend Cruiser you know you go to Pebble Beach take PCH a nice weekend with your lady or your guy as it were and yeah it's a dog leg first gear but unlike the the seven speeed in the Aston Martin when you only have five speeds with a dog leg it's not nearly as weird as uh as when you have that seven speed and a and a completely extra gate I see this this is like it's like a 5610 car I don't get in this and it doesn't inspire me to push it as hard as it goes it inspires me to come have a nice drive through some medium sweepers a PCH one of the bigger Canyons at 10 miles an hour over the speed limit and just listening to the engine it's lovely lovely is the word I'm that I'm I mean here I say that word a lot but but that's what this is like it's an experience feel like I'm part of the road I'm part of the car and I you know the smells of the the Connell leather that has been well kept but you know aging will flip around here oh yeah see you loaded up in the uh the U-turn Zone but the turning radius not so bad all right back the other way this thing hadn't really run in a little while uh before I drove it so they actually said it needs some exercise so I'm over infusion going what else needs some exercise I will I will be your your trainer as it were exercising the out of these cars really you know typical Ferrari it's a high revving motor right now I I've settled into a nice cruise but that's at 4,000 RPM you know a lot of cars I would be uh cruising lower revs than that but these Ferraris they just love it up top man they love being in the top half of that power band will this person let me buy do I have like flashers I don't even know how how a highbeam would work can I oh popups yes I flashed them with the popups thank you sir oh there we go almost couldn't see for a minute oh the popup headlight flash is incredibly effective I need to keep that in mind going forward not a lot of uh bolstering in these seats I kind of have to hang on to the wheel a little bit open up the taps man there there is nothing more satisfying in life than a gated shifter made it to a great sounding engine doesn't matter if it's Ferrari Audi Lambo 1927 Bugatti that click click so satisfying so wonderful this is good me and this 308 are having a good little Vibe right now doing a nice little dance together through these Corners man and this thing is just tight uh this is this is the lowest mile 308 I've ever seen and it is absolutely tight as a drum even with the removable roof which oh look at that just gentleman over here thank you sir it's a road full of gentlemen and gentle women considering people that's what it's about they do what I would do if I saw me coming up behind them just move out of the way and then go about your business oh yeah it rides pretty well too I mean the brakes aren't amazing but for the period I mean
