The LG Watch W7: A Redesigned Smartwatch with Mechanical Watch Hands
The LG Watch W7 is the latest smartwatch from Google, featuring a unique design that combines mechanical watch hands with a digital touchscreen. The watch runs on a quartz movement and has three buttons on the right side, which serve as the redesigned Wear OS notification system.
One of the key features of the LG Watch W7 is its use of rotating crowns to scroll through the Wear LS user interface. This allows users to easily navigate through their notifications and settings. The watch also features a redesigned Google Fit app on the right, along with Google Assistant and other personal information pulled from email such as flight tracking and parcel delivery.
The top button on the LG Watch W7 is used to hide the mechanical watch hands when scrolling through the interface. This allows users to easily view their notifications without being obstructed by the hands. The bottom button gives access to LG's Master Tools, which includes an altimeter, compass, and timer.
What's interesting about the LG Watch W7 is that the mechanical watch hands are used as the primary interface for these tools. For example, when running a stopwatch, the start button activates the mechanical hand, allowing users to switch between modes easily. The middle button can launch the app drawer, which has a different layout than before, with larger and easier-to-tap app icons.
One of the standout features of the LG Watch W7 is its battery life. Despite running on an older Wear 2100 processor, LG claims it can last up to two days. There's also an analog mode that keeps the watch alive for three to four days, and a watch-only mode that turns off the processor completely, allowing the mechanical watch hands to run for up to 100 days.
However, some features are missing from the LG Watch W7, including NFC, heart rate monitoring, and GPS. The watch costs $450, which is pricey considering its limited feature set. However, LG positions the watch as a casual smartwatch aimed at people who want something that looks nice and can last a while.
The 22mm strap feels nice and is interchangeable, with a masculine design overall. Despite being big at 44.5mm, the 1.2-inch LCD screen has a 360x360 resolution that remains sharp and readable.
The LG Watch W7 goes on sale on October 14th, with pre-orders starting at Best Buy on October 7th.
