The Chassis of a Lifetime: A Conversation with Milt's Creator
Milt's creator, the man behind this iconic two-seater sports car, has been fortunate enough to see his brainchild take on a life of its own. With a design that has garnered attention from enthusiasts and collectors alike, it's no wonder why he can't seem to shake off the feeling that something is amiss with the chassis.
"I don't know what it is," he says, "but sometimes I feel like the chassis isn't as rigid as it used to be. It's like it has a mind of its own, and you can't quite put your finger on why." He pauses for a moment, collecting his thoughts before continuing. "I remember when we first started building this car, we were all excited about the prospect of creating something truly unique. But as time went on, I couldn't help but feel that it was going to be a challenge to make a living selling two-seater sports cars."
The challenges faced by Milt's creator are not new to the automotive industry. Porsche, for example, nearly went under before finding success with their SUVs and other models that would eventually become a breadwinner. Similarly, Ford struggled to find success with their Thunderbird until they made the wise decision to expand its seating capacity.
The creation of bullet mirrors was a notable feature in Milt's design. "I used to love those things," he says wistfully. "They were way out on the fender, and I thought it was just so cool." Some cars, like the Apollo, even featured these iconic mirrors as an integral part of their design.
As the conversation continues, we touch on topics such as fuel efficiency, the heater box, and, of course, the horn. "I didn't put a horn in," he admits with a chuckle. "But I think that's what makes it special. People tend to lose interest if they don't have all the bells and whistles." However, this approach seems to be paying off, as the car has garnered attention from enthusiasts who appreciate its unique design.
The Milt's Creator's Road to Success
It was only in 2018 that the project finally came to a close. The creator had been working tirelessly for years, pouring his heart and soul into the creation of this iconic two-seater sports car. But even with all the progress made, it wasn't without its share of challenges.
The first year, the car was finished, but the creator did not get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. He took the car to Concours Italiano, where it received a third-place prize. The next year, however, he was at the Quail, and that's when things started to look up.
It wasn't until the following year, at an AutoMetsy all-Italian show in Colorado, that Milt's creator found himself behind the podium, accepting Best in Show honors. And it was no surprise – Ferrari sponsored the event!
A Conversation About Seats
The topic of seats brings a smile to the creator's face. "I like the original," he says. "It's got a nice feel to it." However, there's a dilemma at hand: whether or not to keep the interior as is, or to upgrade it with new seats.
"I think you leave it the way it is," he suggests. "You know, sometimes it's just nice to enjoy it and keep throwing money at it. But then again, if I redo it and make it look better, that's when people will start to take notice." He pauses for a moment before concluding, "I guess that's the dilemma – making sure it stays true to its original form while also acknowledging its potential for growth."
A Legacy Born
As we conclude our conversation with Milt's creator, he reveals that this car has been a childhood dream of his. Growing up, he would pour over car magazines, admiring the intricate details and innovative designs. It was only a matter of time before he turned his passion into reality.
"I've been thinking about this car since I was 14 years old," he says with a smile. "So to see it come to life has been truly fulfilling." With its unique design and commitment to preserving its original form, Milt's creator is already making waves in the automotive world. Who knows? Maybe one day his creation will be remembered as a classic.
For now, though, it's enough to know that this car has found its way into the hearts of enthusiasts and collectors alike. As we bid farewell to our conversation with Milt's creator, we can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share in his passion and vision.
